Here we go! This is the currently official poster for Stumbled Into Laughter, Stumbled Into You - a James Acaster x Reader (and slightly Rhys James x Reader) story.
Summary: The year is 2019, and life has been quite dull for you since working in various jobs that you hate after graduating from university back in 2011. You used to do stand up comedy at uni but you’ve been putting off pursuing it properly due to lack of confidence and motivation. Your best mates decide to encourage you to try a comedy mic night for the first time in years and it is then you stumble across your old friend Rhys James again. That’s when your life gets turned around as you dive into the world of the comedy circuit and become close with famous comedians. In the midst of it all, you end up meeting a particularly distinctive red headed fellow who could become the very thing that brings meaning to your life again.
If you haven't had the opportunity yet to read it yet then here is the Ao3 link to all 3 chapters so far: https://archiveofourown.org/works/33748507/chapters/83886967

Merry Christmas Newt!
@dont-offend-the-bees Sooo, you had no specific prompts for me, which opened the floor for me to write something -- weird. Something that combined a couple of things I know you're interested in, because I've seen them on your tumblr. Something that, specifically, crossed over your new obsession with the Saw movies...with a certain British gameshow hosted by Greg Davies that I myself rather like. I actually came up with this idea a little while back and meant to message you about it, but forgot -- and I'm kind of glad I did, because that allowed me to write this ridiculous thing as a surprise. XD Hope you find it funny!
Tasksaw
“Well – we’re in a bit of a pickle, aren’t we?”
“I’d say it’s more than just a pickle,” Josh snapped back, tugging on the chain attaching his leg to the wall to test its strength. Depressingly, it seemed to be pretty damn well bolted in there. “Or do you get drugged and wake up in moldy old bathrooms with your leg manacled to the nearest wall often?”
“I can’t say I have,” the other fellow – who’d introduced himself as James – admitted, giving his leg a cursory kick. The chain attached to it rattled, snaking across the filthy floor. “Though I have been in my fair share of shitty bathrooms before.”
Josh squinted at him. “Was that an intentional pun, or. . . ?”
James just gave him a smirk – which was quickly replaced by a frown as he looked around the room again. “It is a very odd place, though. You have any idea why we’re here?”
“Not a bloody clue, mate,” Josh said, letting his chain slip from his hands. “I mean, obviously we pissed off somebody, but I don’t know who or why.”
“Yeah, me either. The guys in Pindrop weren’t that upset about us breaking up,” James muttered, scratching his head. “Which was actually a bit insulting, if you think about it – oh! Hang on!” He snapped his fingers, pointing frantically at Josh. “We need to check that our kidneys haven’t been stolen!”
“Our – our kidneys?” Josh repeated, baffled.
“Yeah! That’s the main reason people get kidnapped, isn’t it?” James said, rolling up the side of his shirt to stare at his abdomen. “To get their organs harvested? And I rather appreciate having my kidneys inside my body!”
“You’ve been reading too many conspiracy theory sites,” Josh said – though he did slip a hand under his shirt, just to feel for any new scars. “Besides, I think we should have woken up in a bathtub full of ice if that was the case.”
“Nobody said our kidnappers had to be good at harvesting organs.”
“Excuse me!”
Both men looked up as the door on the far wall, just out of reach of their chains, opened, admitting a rather awkward-looking man with a scruffy beard and gapped teeth, dressed in a smart black suit and carrying an iPad. “Hello,” he greeted them, with a smile that didn’t seem entirely natural. “Would you like to play a game?”
Josh stared for a moment, trying and failing to come up with an appropriate way to respond to this. “Um. . .”
“What game?” James said, rolling his shirt back down and giving the newcomer a suspicious look. “Who are you?”
“Right, right, let me just. . .”
The man did something on his iPad, then held it up, displaying an image of a rather portly and extremely tall late-middle-aged man in glasses, sat upon an ornate golden throne. “GREETINGS, PEONS!” a powerful voice rang out from the tinny speakers. “Allow me to introduce myself – I am THE TASKMASTER! Your one true love, your reason for getting up in the morning, your NEW GOD AND MASTER! Over the next few days, I shall set you a series of tasks, overseen by my admin and general puppet-man Little Alex Horne! I shall score these tasks according to my whims, and at the end of our time together, whoever scores the most points wins the most valuable prize of all – THEIR LIFE! The loser will be killed in an appropriately ironic fashion. So play well, and amuse me. Puppet-man, I leave things in your hands. DON’T SCREW THIS UP!”
The recording ended in a burst of simulated static. The man – Alex – immediately pulled a piece of paper, folded and sealed with a red wax bearing a “TM” logo, out of his jacket and delivered it to Josh. “If you could just read that aloud, please?”
Completely and utterly baffled, Josh broke the seal and unfolded the paper. “‘Clean your half of this bathroom,” he read out. “‘Cleanest bathroom half wins. You have one hour. Your time starts now.’” He blinked, then looked up at Alex. “Clean – what? How?”
“All the information’s on the task,” Alex replied calmly, starting up a timer on his iPad.
Josh facepalmed into the paper. “Seriously? You’re going to be like this?”
“Well well well – looks like we’re going head to head on this one, Josh!” James said, with perhaps more enthusiasm than the situation warranted. “And I plan to win – puppet-man! Get me a cabbage and a red dress.”

Just watched the new ghostbusters trailer. And my first thought was, "omygod is James the bad guy?!"
But I don't think that's the case here.
It's just from a first glance it seemed like, y'know, the weird/pathetic character becomes a monster trope. Seen it before, but I'm always down for it.

📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😍 👂‍Ocean's Echo (Everina Maxwell, author; Raphael Corkhill, narrator) - same universe as Winter's Orbit but completely unrelated so you absolutely can read this standalone. where WO was a sci-fi romance, this is more a romantic sci-fi. Lots of space military and politicking and being used as pawns in everyone else's games. I absolutely adore Tennal, who shows up to everything with an "I think I will cause problems on purpose!" mindset and Surit, whose steadfast moral compass makes him a great soldier right up until orders conflict with that bone-deep conviction. I also really dug the expanded world building; genuinely hope there'll be more books where we get more of it.
😍 Itsy Bitsy Yoga (wearing_tearing) - reread, 59K - Stucky no powers AU with single dad Steve and toddler yoga teacher Bucky - soft & fluffy as a fleece blanket straight out the dryer
😍 Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots (The Cabots #3) (Cat Sebastian) - every book in this series is solid gold and this is no exception - great execution of the 'didn't realize we were already dating' trope. also Cat had this to say about it in her last newsletter and I think it's so dead on accurate: Earlier this year I read a slew of Kirk-McCoy fanfic in which those two fools didn't realize they were dating. I was enthralled. Delighted. Mesmerized. I took to social media to complain about the lack of this trope in commercial fiction and, predictably, within 48 hours was drafting this book. And thus was born Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots, in which two people love one another very much and then later on realize they've been in a relationship all along. I think (and I'm spitballing here) that there may be something inherently queer about this trope, maybe because in order for it to work, the characters pretty much have to be in some kind of queerplatonic relationship to begin with. Also, there may be something queer or queer-friendly about how even discussing this kind of relationship involves getting into the weeds about what constitutes a relationship in the first place, which kind of goes against the grain of a heteronormative prix fixe one size fits all relationships?
💖💖 +107K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
love you like rlb (orphan_account) - MCU: Stucky, 3.4K - reread of this fave - forever grateful the original creator chose to orphan it and leave it available rather than remove it entirely
Ninety-Nine Problems (lordeofstucky) - MCU: no powers omegaverse, 27K - reread; semi-traditional omegaverse with some absolutely premier dirty talk from steve
Stevie Doesn't Know (aaliona) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 34K - a fun little rock star/barista AU

5, 3, 11!
5) What genre did you read the most of?
i think this year is the first year where i've mainly read non-fiction stuff instead of fiction-- a lot of memoirs and self help! i think the only fiction stuff i read was murderbot, actually, besides fanfic. but i did like murderbot even though i still haven't gotten to the latest book in the series
3) What were your top 5 books of the year?
i suggest everyone takes this list with a heavy heavy heavy grain of salt because i didn't read any books i LOVED this year. but i did enjoy them. i'm also going to only do 3 because i realized i didn't read as much as i thought this year WHOOPS
ace: what asexuality reveals by angela chen-- i think i liked this mainly for the way she breaks down attraction in the book, which you could read here. the rest was alright but it didn't feel as groundbreaking as this breakdown, esp since i could put this breakdown in context to some dating app horror stories that some man i met on hinge who was also ace told me about
dispatches by michael herr. ok this book out of the three i'm going to list is the one i recommend the most. i know it's a war book and that turns people off because army buffs can be pretty irritating but this book consistently made me have to take like. occasional 20 second breaks because it was just so, very very sad. it's a great anti-war book but like, definitely read it when ur not feeling shit abt the world
perfect sound whatever by james acaster. i did skip all his music sections in the book unfortunately but i am a sap for sad stories and reading his mental breakdown did make me go :( and that is what i wanted so i can't complain. also he introduced me to jeff rosenstock, THE musician of all time, who is the bedrock of my carmy playlist
11) What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
my answer is probably dispatches for this one, but vague runner up is slaughterhouse 5 by kurt vonnegut. i'm not a big fan of books that jump around in setting / time but slaughterhouse didn't dive into that too hard as books like NW did, which was defo good for me

I was tagged by @mikesmoustache
name: ehhhhhhhh we'll go with AJ (I'm too old to feel comfortable using my full name online)
star sign: Cancer - I have never seen a zodiac lighter with my sign on it, which is a shame because it would be hilarious to offer to people ominously.
birthday: June 26
height: 5'10" (~177cm)
time: 1.30 am
favorite bands/artists: Top 3: Queen, Depeche Mode, Devotchka in that order. After that I can only give categories, not ranks.
last movie: in a theater: The Addams Family/at home: The Incredibles (just happy it wasn't one of the Cars movies again)
last show: Currently rewatching 'Allo 'Allo
when did i create this blog: this specific blog was created March of 2011
what i post: on this blog, just shiny things I like - stuff comes in waves as I get into different things, but Star Trek and Disco Elysium are pretty constant content. Also cats.
last thing i googled: "can you skip a ring on water" (wanted to see if it was plausible for a character to dramatically toss a ring into a lake and have it skim/skip)
other blogs: okay, so: This blog started as a sideblog of All Our Yestertomorrows, which was a comic I was drawing based on the TTRPG we were playing at the time (a mashup of several White Wolf settings). I kind of ran out of steam on that (I should really get back to it, I found the binder with my game notes again), and decided that I'd switch this blog over to be under another account I'd made to use as a portfolio (@effulgentinara), which is only for original work like fanart, jewelry, sketches, etc. Unfortunately, this causes some confusion since I mostly interact with everyone through this side blog.
Please, please @staff - let me either make this its own account or let me swap which is my main and which is my sideblog, or at least let me choose which account replies and asks are marked as being from. It's been eleven years, I think I deserve this.
do i get asks: Not often, but I always enjoy them.
following around: 100. I've determined that's the maximum number of people I can follow without feeling overwhelmed trying to keep up with Tumblr, and it's a pleasantly round number.
average hours of sleep:
Tumblr media
My personal best/worst is technically only around 50 solid hours awake, but yeah, I'm really bad about just... forgetting? to sleep? But I'm trying to be better about it recently.
instruments: couple of years of piano lessons that I could probably dredge up with a little refresher (don't currently own a piano or working keyboard so I'm out of practice), guitar, ukulele, a little bit of flute, playing around with an electronic drum pad I bought as a treat, every now and then I give that toy accordion a shot again, and recently I've been enjoying the otomatone I got for my birthday
what i’m wearing:  t-shirt and shorts (with pockets!)
dream job: children's book illustrator or just creating weird little games (I do some stuff in my spare time, but don't have a lot of chances to work on it)
dream trip: would be nice to go to Japan (particularly the Korakuen Gardens), but if I'm being perfectly honest my main motivation for brushing up on my French is to go visit Parc Astérix someday.
nationality: American/Irish (technically UK as well, but I've never bothered to file the paperwork because I don't really have any plans to live there anytime soon)
favorite song: Fire Escape in the Sea by Sea Power may have managed to dethrone '39 by Queen, or has at least tied
last book i’ve read: Does an epic fanfic completely re-writing Star Trek: TNG but with Tasha surviving count? If not, then I think it was either Howl's Moving Castle or James Acaster's Classic Scrapes.
top 3 fictional universes i would like to live in: Star Trek (fully automated luxury gay space communism FTW), Animal Crossing, or Wallace and Gromit
Tagging @shoutsindwarvish @tiwaztyrsfist @singedsun @nerdishnerd @angelchrys @tardigradesonthemoon @thewinterarcher

Do you have anything that you like to read in the free time? Have anything great or fun or enjoyable that you willing to share? (I'm just running around and asking my fav authors for book or fanfic recommendations now. Also thanks for being awesome!
Hi! Sorry for sitting on this for a few days. I've just been a bit embarrassed to admit I don't read much lately ;; I've had a hard time actually reading books since I got depression in college for some reason, and I haven't made it through most of the audiobooks I've checked out lately... but! I usually listen to memoirs? My favorite that I've listened to semi-recently is Water, Wood, and Wild Things by Hannah Kirshner, which is by a woman who travels to rural Japan semi-frequently and writes about her experience working with different artisans there. I also got about halfway through James Acaster's Guide to Quitting Social Media, which as far as I could tell while listening seemed like it could best be classified as a fictional memoir? Even though I didn't finish it, I liked what I got through :)
I also like books about writing, and my favorite one of those is If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland (though, fair warning, it was written in the 1930s and uses some words typical to the time period that would not fly so well today, even though the author seems relatively progressive for the era). It's a short read/listen (only an hour and a half) and is more emotional than technical in its advice, so I like relistening a couple times a year. A longer one that I also enjoyed was Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.
Neil Gaiman and Ursula Le Guin are on my to read list for when I have the mental space for fiction again, and if you check my #fic recs tag, I've recommended a few stories over the years. Hope that helps! Ha ha, and thank you! <3
