I love the fact that August doesn't have a name. We know that James and Betty were the couple and she's just...the other woman. As someone who has been the other girl (never on purpose) it's interesting how irrelevant you are. It's just the two people's love story and you're just a temporary distraction. A pretty thing to look at, use, and throw away when the thrill expires. Something for everyone to point fingers at and blame for being the homewrecker.
I'll never understand why people don't criticise the guy enough. Most of the time the other woman doesn't even know she's the other woman, and even she does she doesn't owe you anything like yea going after someone who's taken makes you shitty af but it's your partner that owes you loyalty it's their responsibility to not fucking cheat.
THE WAY AUGUST CALLS THEIR AFFAIR "SUMMER LOVE" BUT JAMES CALLS IT "JUST A SUMMER THING" IS SO HEARTBREAKING ILL KMS.
August doesn't even have a proper ending she's just left there hanging like we know James and Betty end up together again but August just sort of fades away... (Literally the song just fades to silence Taylor Swift is a fucking genius) she's nothing but a chapter in their lives.

Ok, so you know the folklore love triangle? (Betty, james and august story)
So I read somewhere a theory that changed my whole perspective on the story and the album in general. I really wish I could give the person who discovered that credit but I have no idea who is it.
So basecly the theory is that the WHOLE album is a story, and the love triangle is just a part of it.
Now I'll go through the songs in the order of them in the story and explain them:
August (august pov): james and august's summer and how it meant a lot to august but nothing to james.
Mirrorball (august pov): august is trying to impress by being something she's not and trying to seem cool.
Betty (james pov): james comes to betty's party and tell her that he want her back and the summer didn't mean anything to him.
Illicit affairs (august pov): august understands how toxic was what she had with james and how wrong was the way he treated her, but she still can't get over him and what they had.
Cardigan (Betty pov): after they graduating, betty realises that james treated her very badly and that he really messed up.
Exile (both james and betty's povs): betty is breaking up with james.
The 1 (Betty pov): betty is starting a new page with herself and although she understands that her relationship with james wasn't right, she still wonders what would it be like if it worked out.
This is me trying (james pov) james is desperately trying to get betty back and to make things right but he can't.
Peace (james pov): james decided that he needs to go away from the city and to join the military so both he and betty could have peace.
Epiphany: james dies in the war.
My tears ricochet (james pov I think): betty attends James's funeral and feeling guilty about not making things right with him before it was too late.
Hoax (betty pov): betty can't get over james death and it turns her insane.
Mad woman (betty's pov): betty is moving to a new town where everyone thinks she's crazy.
Now there's a pause on betty's story and two songs that seem unrelated, but it will be clear in the last song.
Seven: taylor swifts childhood and early life.
Invisible string: taylor swifts adult love life and how all along through her bad relationships and mistakes she was tied to her true lover (aka joe).
Now we're left with one song, the last great America dynasty.
I thing this is the story that beautifully ties it all together.
The song is about rebecah, the last owner of the house taylor swift lives in now. It talks about how she seemed crazy to the rest of the town, and how taylor bought the house 50 years later.
The crazy thing is that rebecah was an actual person, and she went by betty. So the album might tell the story of her life and how it all ties together like an invisible string(!!).
I don't know if this theory is true, but thinking about this story while listening to the album is insane. There are so many connections between the songs and if you'd like I can do another post about where in the lyrics you can see the story.
This is by far my favorite ts theory.

in my head james and betty get back together after james and august’s summer fling and they remain together until high school is over. once their senior year is finished, james proposes to betty and she has an epiphany, she doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life with james, so she turns him down and their small town start to gossip about her, spreading rumours and lies so betty and inez then run away, living the rest of their lives at ‘holiday house’ in a coastal town where betty goes by her legal name, rebekah. eventually rebekah and inez fall in love and become socialites, living freely as themselves.

My Semi-Ficticious Take On The Folklore Love Triangle
Which probably no one will or want to see but it's 1 a. m. and I'm bored and inspired
So we all know the basics, over two years ago Miss Taylor Swift released her Grammy-Winning, tear-inducing album, folklore, which revolved mainly around a teenage love triangle, the characters involved are:
Betty (cardigan)
Augustine (august)
James (betty)
The Taylor Swift version is that it is about a seventeen-year-old boy named James who cheats on his high school sweetheart gf Betty, while away on a summer vacation where he and Augustine began an affair, but he comes back to Betty, a very angry and rightfully hurt Betty, who heard about James’ affair from Inez, certified school gossiper and presumably Betty’s friend, eventually they (James and Betty) make up, and Augustine becomes just a foggy summer memory.
While I enjoy the source material Taylor gave us, and accept it as the, as you may say in fandoms, canon, I took the forementioned source material and made it well... Sapphic. Lesbianism. Boobs.
So if you’re homophobic, this sleep-deprived essay isn’t for you, but if you’re not, you’re free to stay.
(To clarify this is my personal headcanon of the Folklore Love Triangle, and I’m not saying it’s the official canon, also let’s take it as what it truly is, fiction)
With that note,
Introducing:
James Deanna Williams
as The Skateboarding Leading Lady
Tumblr media
Following..
Elizabeth “Betty” Deborah Carlson
as The Cardigan-Wearing Overthinker
Tumblr media
& Finally
Augustine Magdalene Watanabe
as The Salt Air Rememberer
Tumblr media
The title of this piece says semi-ficticious because the story remains the same at its core, only that James is a girl.
So James has a high school gf, Betty, who she cheats on during the summer previous to their senior year, with a girl named Augustine. Inez tells Betty about it after it’s already over and Betty is, to short it, furious, and refuses to acknowledge James’s presence at the beginning of the school year, but soonly forgives her, and they get back together.
(If this was a series it’d definitely be called Just A Summer Thing)

I don't think we talk about the lyric in Betty where Taylor sings "Slept next to her, but I dreamt of you all summer long"! James is basically saying "Yeah I know cheated on you all summer, but it's ok because I was thinking of you the whole time".
