“Qui-Gon returned from Tatooine with a former slave boy. According to the boy’s mother, the boy had no father.”
“A clone?” Palpatine asked uncertainly.
“Not a clone,” Dooku said. “Perhaps conceived by the Force. As Qui-Gon believes.”
Palpatine’s head snapped back. “You don’t sit on the Council. How do you know this?”
“I have my ways.”
“Does this have something to do with the prophecy you spoke of?”
“Everything. Qui-Gon believes that the boy—Anakin is his name—stands at the center of a vergence in the Force, and believes further that his finding him was the will of the Force. Blood tests were apparently performed, and the boy’s concentration of midi-chlorians is unprecedented.”
“Do you believe that he is the prophesied one?”
“The Chosen One,” Dooku amended. “No. But Qui-Gon accepts it as fact, and the Council is willing to have him tested.”
“What is known about this Anakin?”
“Very little, except for the fact that he was born into slavery nine years ago and was, until recently, along with his mother, the property of Gardulla the Hutt, then a Toydarian junk dealer.” Dooku smirked. “Also that he won the Boonta Eve Classic Podrace.”
Palpatine had stopped listening.
Nine years old … Conceived by the Force … Is it possible …
His thoughts rewound at frantic speed: to the landing platform on which he and Valorum had welcomed Amidala and her group. Actually not Amidala, but one of her look-alikes. But the sandy-haired boy, this Anakin, swathed in filthy clothing, had been there, along with a Gungan and the two Jedi. Anakin had spent the night in a tiny room in his apartment suite.
And I sensed nothing about him.
“Qui-Gon is rash,” Dooku was saying. “Despite his fixation with the living Force, he demonstrates his own contradictions by being a true believer in the prophecy—a foretelling more in line with the unifying Force.”
“Nine years old,” Palpatine said when he could. “Surely too old to be trained.”
“If the Council shows any sense.”
“And what will become of the boy then?”
Dooku’s shoulders heaved. “Though no longer a slave, he will probably be sent to rejoin his mother on Tatooine.”

things that are canon thanks to Luceno's Tarkin (minor spoilers for the book beware):
• Tarkin has a sense of humor
"Tarkin glanced around the room. “And on our end?” “The HoloNet relay station is best possible,” the specialist at the comm board said. “It is raining, sir,” a different spec added, eliciting a chorus of good-natured laughter from others seated nearby. Even Tarkin grinned, though fleetingly."
• he's also a dramatic bitch who stole Obi-Wan's move
"Tarkin shrugged out of the duster, letting it fall to the floor, and stepped down to the holoprojector."
• huge little shit energy
"Now, while the commander and some of the team members stood arguing about how deep the water might be, Tarkin simply waded directly into the current and trudged to the middle of the river, where wavelets lapped at his shoulders. Then, cupping his hands to his mouth, he yelled back to the team: “It’s this deep!”"
• he was bullied in school, no wonder he and blue man are friends
• Vader being a gentleman to the elderly
"Vader extended a hand to Tarkin and pulled him up onto the deteriorated deck plates of the gunship’s deployment platform."
• we nearly got Tarkin splattered against the viewport of a star destroyer like a fly on a windshield, WE WERE SO CLOSE-
"The countdown had just reached T minus five when Tarkin was yanked forward, nearly completely off his feet. Fearing another lurch he spread his hands wide and so was kept from being slammed headfirst into the closest viewport panel."
• the Emperor arranged a playdate between Tarkin and Vader hoping they would get along better and by the end of it they were friends, aww

“In burying their heads in the sands and snows of remote worlds, the surviving Jedi humble themselves before the Sith. So let them: let them atone for one thousand years of arrogance and self-absorption.” Sidious watched Vader, displeased. "Once more your thoughts betray you. I see that you are not fully convinced." Glancing at him, Vader gestured to his face and black-cloaked body, then gestured in similar fashion to Sidious. "Look at us. Are these faces of victory?" Sidious was careful to keep himself from becoming too angry, or too sickened by his pupil's self-pity. "We are not this crude stuff, Lord Vader. Have you not heard that before?" "Yes," Vader said. "I've heard it before. Too often."

July 1988. An art book for a show that never quite came to be, ROBOTECH ART 3 is also the official account of how the planned sequel to ROBOTECH fell apart. if you've heard of ROBOTECH, you're almost certainly aware that it was an amalgamation of three similar but unrelated Tatsunoko anime series, tied together with a new storyline by American producer Carl Macek as a multigenerational saga with enough episodes for American TV syndication. The dilemma this presented (other than for aggrieved weebs insisting that the new storyline was a bastardization of the presumptively superior original series) was that characters from the different generations couldn't really interact, and some important plot elements could only be presented through exposition. ROBOTECH II: THE SENTINELS was to be a 65-episode original series that would chronicle how the survivors of the first generation (adapted from the popular SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS) set out to make peace with the Robotech Masters of Tirol (the villains of the second generation, adapted from SUPER DIMENSION CAVALRY SOUTHERN CROSS) and ended up embroiled in a war with the Invid, the villains of the third generation (adapted from GENESIS CLIMBER MOSPEADA), who eventually conquered the Earth. This was to lead up to the finale of the original series, which would be the starting point for a subsequent series.
For various reasons chronicled at length in the book, the project collapsed after only a handful of episodes were completed. (The surviving footage was later released on home video.) Macek's story outlines were then adapted in several similar but distinct ways in a series of prose novels by "Jack McKinney" (a pseudonym for the writing team of Brian Daley and James Luceno), in the Palladium roleplaying game, and later in American comic books by John and Jason Waltrip. There was also a fanon take that mostly rejected all of the other versions as incompatible with the actual scripts and footage of the original show, which eventually led Harmony Gold, the American production company, to retroactively declare the entire project apocryphal. Harmony Gold then hired the Waltrip brothers to create a five-issue comic book prelude to its truly dire 2007 direct-to-video animated sequel, ROBOTECH: THE SHADOW CHRONICLES, which is heavily reliant on the events of the SENTINELS storyline without being entirely compatible with any previous version of it, and is frustratingly unsatisfying to anyone who actually liked any of them. (Nobody won, in other words.)
THE SENTINELS is often derided for no particularly good reason. The basic storyline has its clunky aspects (in addition to the continuity issues the RRG contingent identified), but so do the original Japanese shows, and the Japanese MACROSS franchise has subsequently gone a lot of weird places that tend to undercut the claim that ROBOTECH is categorically inferior. Both have their flaws, but ROBOTECH and THE SENTINELS are hardly without merit. (The dismal SHADOW CHRONICLES is another matter …)

Queen Amidala informs Senator Palpatine of the mysterious and tragic death of King Veruna. Hego Damask is unaware of any guilt.
In the 2001 published novel "Cloak of Deception" by James Luceno, King Veruna is a character that is referred to only in passing. The mysterious death of Queen Amidala's predecessor is revealed in the final pages of the novel and was not explained for years. But then in 2012 - readers finally got an answer. In "Darth Plagueis", also by Luceno, Veruna has a major and important role and the mystery surrounding his death is solved. Maybe a certain Muun has something to do with it, who knows.

reading this is the equivalent of being gut punched 4 times. anakin is constantly bringing questions and his combative feelings to obi-wan, which to obi-wan might feel like being attacked by anakin for things out of his control or things that have nothing to do with him (or things that actually are obi-wan's responsibility), but really it's an expression of anakin's need for obi-wan's validation and obi-wan's guidance, and it obviously hurts him deeply when he feels dismissed
and obi-wan has been anakin's master for 14 years now and he STILL feels like the second choice, like a replacement that is meant to fail his padawan somehow. even tho now anakin is a knight and a general, this old insecurity of obi-wan's has not gone away. qui-gon's shadow is looming over him as his shadow looms over anakin and no one can reach the place they are attempting to live up to
(this is because qui-gon is a flawed man and obi-wan is a flawed man and anakin is, surprise, a flawed man, so they are constantly leaning upwards towards a version of someone they love that is not accurate to who they truly are and impossible to emulate because of that. and even if their perceptions of each other were not themselves inherently flawed, obi-wan constantly comparing himself to a dead man and anakin constantly comparing himself to obi-wan means no one is being Themself and is instead caught in a cycle of pain and also nonsense.)
but then yoda just saunters over, rips open obi-wan's chest, and just moves on with the conversation. yes he wants to ease obi-wan's worries because he does care about him, but he is still yoda so he just casually has to acknowledge obi-wan's eternal burden and stifling sense of duty (and it is no accident he says so right after obi-wan is thinking about not being good for qui-gon's memory OR for anakin who he loves like he is his brother, because it is true that obi-wan thinks big picture and cares about the galaxy at large, but the specific feelings about qui-gon and anakin are heavy enough to weigh him down) and then they move on, back to the war and uncovering conspiracies, without obi-wan's response. because what would he say? there is no defense or denial. this is the same book with the infinite sadness line. obi-wan knows who he is and what he carries, and so does everyone else.

anyone wanna see darth plagueis book fanart i did in 2019? no? well me neither! horrid anime eyes, no bodily proportions, facial expressions WHACK but eh to save the eyeballs of you mindless, innocent scrollers, they are under the cut :)
so, in no particular order and with white scribbles covering my old signature, here we go!
Tumblr media
first off, plagueis, i think sidious was originally next to him but it must have turned out terribly so i tore him out lmao. what are those eyes. and my horrendous spelling, but in my defense, until friday i only ever had the audiobook version (i now have the novel and am annotating it for fun?) btw the audiobook slays??? the voices are so good!
Tumblr media
yippee! 11-4D! honestly this gets a solid 10/10 i have no idea what 4D looks like but for my 2019 art this is very good!! also i swear 11-4D is referred to with it/he pronouns!! so cool :)) my guy has more personality than all those 'other muuns' that just follow plagueis and hill around lmao
Tumblr media
plagueis is so cool here! yeah ik he's killing someone idc he's my favourite guy. fun fact i had a crush on him at the same time these drawings were made (and you can see when the drawings were bc i actually put the date on this one!). also what the hell is that veruna monstrosity. ew.
Tumblr media
palpatine!! look at his ugly-ly drawn face, and tell me he's not a natural born schemer. i love him so much now. dude i didn't do him justice :(( but yeah he's so cool!!
Tumblr media
but here!! here i did him more justice!! yeah yeah he's got the typical anime emo over-eye shadow but look at him and tell me he's not about to murder his entire family and call a guy he barely knows for help. yeah? you can't. i even quite like the hair ngl!!
Tumblr media
and last, but certainly not least, larsh hill!! HE'S SO UGLY WHAT?? ehmm anyway, apparently 2019 me didn't dismiss him as irrelevant, like i did until recently, and drew him <33 i love him now btw, plagueis' partner in crime, or just partner?? or father figure??? don't they kinda co parent san?? huh?? anyways im about 100 pages into annotating my copy of plagueis and so far only 3 people have called hego 'hego' - his parents, and larsh (twice!!). thats gotta mean something man...
ermm now i've gotta do some proper fanart so people don't doubt my artistic abilities. I'll probably redraw some of these and redesign characters, now that i have the time to do it!!
if you've gotten this far without pissing yourself laughing at my art thank you <3 /lh (it's not that bad, right?!! RIGHT?!! oh well who actually cares. i love most of it)

Agents of Chaos I: Hero's Trial - James Luceno
Star Wars: The New Jedi Order book 4
Reread: Nov 2023
So Agents of Chaos is about what Han Solo is up to. Which after Chewbacca got mooned, turns out to be running from his family in grief. It's a lot of dipping back into his old smuggler circles until he ends up with a new friend, Droma, and they do heroic stuff. Because of course they do.
This book revolves around the fake defection of a Yuuzhan Vong agent. Ultimately she is not important, but the characters around her are. Vergere, who is not Yuuzhan Vong, but Fosh and an Old Republic Jedi Master. But somehow on their side. And Harrar, a Yuuzhan Vong priest, so doesn't seem that important until near the end of the series. There's a lot of spy stuff in this book and it's kind of fun to see New Republic Intelligence working. Although I guess not that well, if Han has to come to the rescue haha.

Tarkin by James Luceno
Tumblr media
Tarkin is a Star Wars canon novel published in 2014 and written by James Luceno. It takes place five years after the events of Revenge of the Sith with flashbacks to before and during the Clone Wars. We see how Tarkin rises to Grand Moff, when a threat to the Empire happens. Tarkin’s ship, The Carrion Spike, is stollen and The Emperor send Darth Vader to help him look for it and destroy the freedom fighters who stole it.
Whilst the book is mostly made up of the inner monologue, that does get boring at times, we learn a lot about Tarkin’s childhood and how he figured out Darth Vader’s real identity. This is where these two start to respect each other. The groundwork to their relationship in A New Hope.
The book also covers the dynamic between the Empire’s big three. The Emperor, Darth Vader and Tarkin, and Luceno also puts a lot of legends concepts back into canon. Mainly for Darth Sideous back story.
I may sound bias, but anything with Darth Vader in it can do no wrong. He is a badass bad guy, and anything written from an Imperial point of view, you always end up rooting for the bad guys. Darth Vader can win you over with just one line. For me it was: “Moff Tarkin sends his regards.”
Whilst the book gets boring at time and only 314 pages, it is a long read. This book is a good backstory to an interesting character. I’d rate this 4 stars out of 5.
