AFL Ruckman Brodie Grundy Was Made For The Bloods
Over 40, 000 AFL fans packed the SCG for the Sydney Swans vs Melbourne Demons opening round of the 2024 season. What were the main takeaways from this novel opening match. AFL ruckman Brodie Grundy was made for the Bloods and played with real heart and soul to get them over the line. He nullified Max Gawn as the game went on and put in a massive last quarter to turn the tide the Swans way. Grundy had 22 disposals, 15 contested, 9 clearances, 6 tackles, 4 marks and 31 hit outs. Sydney defeated Melbourne 12.14 to 9.10. The Demons had outscored the Swans in the third term to threaten their chances of victory.

Grundy Excelled In The Ruck For Sydney Against Gawn
Isaac Heeney played in the middle, as the big bodied mid the Swans so needed. He was a big part of why they won this match. Sydney went into this game without Luke Parker and Callum Mills. Early on they were outmuscled and outbodied in the middle by Melbourne. Viney, Oliver, and Petracca were dominant out of the centre in the first half. The Demons seemed poised to possibly over run Sydney, as they did in round 24 last year. That this did not eventuate was on the back of Grundy, Heeney, and a lift by the whole Blood’s team in the final quarter.

Sydney Swans Beat Melbourne In Opening AFL Round
Chad Warner really picked up his effectiveness in that last term, as did Gulden on the wing. Nick Blakey was a standout performer breaking the lines and delivering the ball deep into attack on numerous occasions. It was a slippery night and the ball was like a big red oval of soap. Hardly anyone could hold a mark, especially anyone over 184 cm. Logan McDonald finished with a goal but was well held by the big Demon defence for much of the match. It was not a night for big forwards at either end. It was a humid evening more suited to players like Papley and Rowbottom. Hayden McLean managed a couple of goals and supported Grundy well in the ruck. Sam Wicks came on late and played like a real senior footballer kicking a goal and applying pressure up forward.
Grundy Plays Like A Ruck Rover & Competes Hard
Brodie Grundy plays like an old style ruck rover and is just what the doctor ordered for the Swans in the middle. As a longtime follower of the Swan’s fortunes the team has been lacking this kind of physical presence for at least a decade in the ruck. Grundy himself said in an interview last night – it is only one match – but hallelujah the much needed big man has arrived at last! Brodie plays with real intent and he got better as the night went on. Not even a blue bottle sting behind the ear on the morning of the match could stop Brodie from playing his heart out! Melbourne were tough and played hard to make this a hard fought victory.
Good Signs For Swans Going Forward In 2024 Season
James Jordon, the former Dee, tried hard and showed signs of becoming a valuable acquisition into the Swans lineup. Dane Rampe was good down back directing forays forward on the back of his experience. Lewis Melican got better as the game wore on. Ollie Florent was good early on and never stopped contributing. Will Hayward popped up in the second half for a couple of valuable goals. Justin McInerney played hard and never shirked a contest. There were good signs from Matt Roberts as a young player with a future for Sydney.
It Was Hot In Sin City Tonight
It was a hot, humid and slippery night at the SCG for the AFL opener and Sydney got the chocolates in the end. It was a hard in and under type of contest. The Bloods wanted to win more in that last quarter. It was a celebration of 150 years of South Melbourne/Sydney and a legion of past greats were at the game for a special function. Names like Greg Williams, Peter Bedford, Graham Teasdale, and Paul Kelly – all Brownlow Medal winners - were in attendance. Coach John Longmire was proud as punch in the end at the efforts of his young charges. A great victory over a quality opponent.

The NSW Waratahs have today confirmed the opening trial match of their 2023 Super Rugby Pacific pre-season campaign, when they take on the ACT Brumbies on February 4 in Griffith in regional NSW. It’s a further win for country NSW Waratahs fans with the match against the Brumbies following the previously announced fixture against the QLD Reds on February 11 in Narrabri as part of the annual Santos Festival of Rugby.

How federal agents killed two of the Touhy gang of escaped convicts last Monday night was told yesterday as the government attained custody of the five catured alive.
Earl J. Connelley, assistant director of the federal bureau of investigation, told a coroner's jury about the shooting as other agents were seeking to determine whether the Touhy gang was responsible for the $20,000 holdup of an armored car on Dec. 18.
The bodies of Eugene Lanthorn, alias James O'Connor, and St. Clair McInerney were on slabs near by as Connelley gave an account of the shooting.
Lanthorn, 36 years old, was slain in his third escape from the prison, where he was serving a 1 year to life term for armed robbery imposed in 1932. In May of that year he fled but was shot and captured in a robbery. In 1936 he pulled the masterlight switch of the prison and scaled the wall on a ladder he contrived, but was caught the next January in Kenosha, Wis. McInerney's death closed a life sentence he was serving, under the habitual criminal act, imposed in 1937 after a safe blowing attempt which followed two previous robbery convictions. He was 30 years old.

Held at the FBI headquarters here were Roger Touhy, Basil Banghart, Edward Darlak, and William Stewart. In federal custody at Minneapolis was Matthew Nelson, the last of the gang of seven who escaped from the Stateville prison on Oct. 9 and the first to be caught.
"Eugene Lanthorn and St. Clair McInerney [the subjects of the inquest) escaped from the Stateville prison on Oct. 9," said Agent Connelley in starting the story of the battle at 1256 Leland avenue on Monday night.
"We sought them as violators of the draft law. A subsequent investigation showed they had taken refuge at 1256 Leland avenue in apartment 31.
Trapped in Own Flat.
"On Saturday, Dec. 26, and Sunday.Dec. 27. agents of the governmentidentified the two men thru visualobservation. On Monday when thetwo left their apartment we placedmen in it and also in apartment 21.on the floor below, and in apartment33, down the corridor. We waited fortheir return.
"Monday night about 11 o'clock the two men approached the door. One,I think it was Lanthorn, placed a key in the lock. The door opened and they started to enter. At that time a command was given:
"Stick up your hands. We are federal officers."
Connelley didn't say so in his testimony, but it was understood he was one of the men inside the room.
20 to 40 Slugs in Each.
There were shots by the two men and subsequent firing by the agents on the second and third floors, he said. "The agents used 38 caliber revolvers and 12 gauge shotguns. There is a possibility that magnum ammunition was used."
[Police ballistics experts said that magnum ammunition is fired from a specially designed magnum pistol, which is one of the two hardest hitting hand weapons in existence. It is a .357 caliber cartridge, which with a 150 grain powder charge has a muzzle velocity of 1,512 feet per second, against 800 feet for the .38 caliber police special cartridge which is the same size and carries the same weight of powder. The only other hand gun with similar hitting power is the 9 mm. Luger pistol, they said.]
The body of each convict was pierced by 20 to 40 bullets or shot-gun slugs, coroner's physicians said. As far as was known no government agent was hit.
Two pistols were turned over to the coroner and said to have beentaken from the bodies of the slain convicts. One, a 45 caliber pistol, had been fired twice. The other, 30-38 revolver, had not been fired.
May Transfer Banghart.
The jury held the shooting of the two men was justifiable homicide and extended congratulations and commendations to the government agents.
United States Atty. J. Albert Woll announced that four of the recaptured convicts would be turned over to the state authorities for return to prison probably by the end of this week. The government may decide to send Banghart to a federal prison, Woll said, in as much as he is under a 36 year sentence for a mail robbery in North Carolina.
Spencer J. Drayton, special agent in charge of the FBI in Chicago, said his aids still were questioning Touhy, Banghart, Darlak, and Stewart. He said there had been no admissions of guilt in the Buick plant robbery.
Because the escaped convicts were known to have had little money on Dec. 17 and to have had plenty afterward, however, it was believed they robbed the armored car.
