Robert Rauschenberg, Hoarfrost (1974–76)

For the Hoarfrosts, Rauschenberg used solvent to transfer images from newspapers and magazines to unstretched fabric. The Hoarfrosts were created when Rauschenberg noticed that the cheesecloth used to clean lithography stones in print workshops retains traces of ink when hung up to dry. The series was also inspired by James Rosenquist’s birthday gift to Rauschenberg of a bolt of transparent silk that reminded Rauschenberg of a “hoarfrost”—frozen water vapor—a word used in Dante’s Inferno. According to the artist’s instructions, the unstretched fabric works are attached to the wall with push-pins that are inserted in sewn "button holes" at the upper edge, allowing them to respond to air currents and move accordingly. The artist described them to Calvin Tomkins as “shimmering information.”

When I first started following football properly I was about 25 and West Ham had just been relegated to the championship. Kevin Nolan was our captain, Sam Allardyce was our manager and James Tomkins and Winston Reid made up the sexiest centre back duo never seen before or since in football. It was a glorious time, we won week in week out against the like of Barnsley, Cardiff and Blackpool. We got promoted back up to the Premier League. European football wasn’t even on the horizon.

I can’t believe sometimes we got from there to here. How quickly people forget. We’re not actually a club entitled to and expected to get European football every season. We’re not a club who were ever likely to win a European trophy. We don’t finish in the top 7 like we’re sitting comfortably.

Tonight might be the last game of European football West Ham play for a long time and it was a fucking privilege to have been there. I was so proud watching us, I had so much _fun_ watching us. It was a performance worthy of where we’ve got to over the past few years.

I’m sick of the Moyes haters. Fucking statues should be erected in his name.

Something I've been wondering since a lot of the older cats tend to get cast younger and younger recently - are there any performers you could plausibly see as "real" younger versions of those characters?

Anon, that is actually a super interesting question (and I hope I'm understanding what you're asking for; apologies if I misunderstood - if you are asking whether there are performers who have not played the role but played others and can get away with playing them, honestly I'm not a big proponent of having all super young swings and understudies, and I've spoken at length about that before), but there *are* actually a handful of performers of past (which means that they *were* young when they initially took the role and looked it) and present that I could feasibly see as younger (and by "younger" I mean like more in the 20s) faceclaims or "versions" of my beloved older cats (and that I often will note back too when I'm trying to picture them in my mind).

From what I have heard and seen of them, they also give off more of a younger vibe, either due to the lack of maturity in their voices, or their general dispositions, that I think works well as these characters but younger. Imagine a different bunch of teenagers and gapped teeth babies running around the Junkyard hollering at one another and whining at their parents before *they* became the parents, ahaha.

The following progressive of My Batman AU resembles some new origin stories and new accomplishments between the DC Universe.

Bio: Barbra Gordon was the first born to Jim Gordon. She dreams about being apart of the cop but unforantally, Her forbid her to become a cop, saying how dangerous Police work is.

One day Gilliam Lobe had enough of James Gordon going against the vigilante law and decided to send Dr Death *already at his breaking point* to the home of Captain Gordon, where he starts with the murder of the Captians Wife, Sara Gordon. James Gordon Distraught as he sees his wife’s corps and blood on Hellferns hands. The two of them began to fight, swinging their fist and kicks straight at another. During the fight when getting punched at reminding Karl Hellfern about many years as a child when he was mentally abused by his parents. This caused Karl to become more angry as he got the upper hand on Jim. In angry tears, holds one of Death's guns demanding to let her father go. James asks Barbara to put the gun down but Death offers to only let him go to kill him. After a minute of talking about the normal child’s society that abandoned him making the way he is, begins to shoot but is stopped by Batman in time. Dr Death tries to attack but doesn't know The Dark Knights master combat has outnumbered Death. Death did punch Batman, only to have his hand in pain. Standing in their places, He rambled to Batman that they were not so different living in a society that makes them so bad that their egos had come to them. Batman says that he uses his ego for justice right before beating him with no mercy as Dr Death continues to goad him. Batman was able to bring down Dr Death who admits that Commissioner Lobe sent her to kill Jim and his Family and recorded it too. The GCPD came and arrested Karl Hellfren for his crimes for almost 5 years, it’s gonna take time for Barbara Gordon to recover from the trauma.

Barbara continued her life as normal, and got a job in a school library. While there she learned how to quickly gather information, but she still wasn't happy. She wanted to make a difference. One day, she was invited to a costume party and she decided to be a bit creative and made a Bat-Girl costume. on the way to the party however, "Killer Moth" and gang shows up to the party and started to commit robberies after Batgirl takes down the gang Killer Moth attempts to escape by dropping the hostage from up high, but Batgirl saved the hostage and disappeared as Batman arrived at the scene and caught the escaping Killer Moth. As Batgirl made her escape from the scene, she was interrupted by Batman who congratulated her on her efforts but asked her not to repeat it. Batman then inferred that he knew who she was and warns he this type of stick will get her into trouble. After a few weeks or months, Bruce agrees to let him join alongside him and Get into a friendly rivalry with Dick Grayson/Robin. Eventually when Bruce started out the Justice League and Dick started out the Teen Titans, She decided to have her own team of Super Heroes Girls. She continues to assist Batman and his allies as well as keeping up her ranks and as well as expressing her feelings for a another girl, who was Lucius Fox’s daughter, Tiffany Fox.

A ONE-FAMILY BUSINESS FOR ALMOST A CENTURY IN HAVERSTRAW

Excerpt from the Journal-News, 16, Jan 1968

Since 1869, four generations of a North Rockland family have combined bulldog determination and native ingenuity to carry on a one-man business.

The Mardorf Bakery in Haverstraw, now approaching its centennial year, is one of the small businesses in the county which has been able to keep up with modern economics.

Mardorf's has relied solely on the quality of its baked goods to do this, according to Mrs. Guy P. Donohue, president of the company. The bakery has specialized in cakes and danishes over the years, emphasizing sweeter baked goods, and is also known for its wedding cakes.

“Every cake is done to individual order." This, says Mrs. Donohue, has kept Mardorf's famous.

The one-family history that built the bakery's success began in Germany, where Mrs. Donohue's grandfather, Frederick Mardorf, was a baker.

Mardorf came to Rockland, where his relatives had settled, and established the original bakery in 1854 at 20 Main St., Haverstraw, under the name of Mardorf and Kieser. Kieser was a cousin of Frederick Mardorf.

In "A History of Haverstraw," noted: "In 1872, Frederick Mardorf and Frederick Kieser dissolved their bakery business by mutual consent. Frederick Kieser then opened his new bakery opposite the post office on West Street. He had the best kind of bread, pies and cakes, hot rolls in the morning and tea biscuits in the afternoon. He took orders for weddings and parties and ornamented cakes 'New York style.'

" In connection with the bakery, Kieser established a counter for ice cream, fountain soda water, hot cofee, tea and chocolate.

Frederick Mardorf continued to make good bread and cakes in the old bakery, the 'Excelsior' as it was called. He had been there 18 years and was an experienced baker, having been in the baking business in Germany, England and America.

“Mardorf pledged $1,000 to any person in Rockland County or New York City who could beat his bread, cake or confectionery in quality or size for a certain length of time.

“His wagons ran twice daily through Haverstraw, Garnerville, North and West Haverstraw, Tomkins Cove and Grassy Point, where his bread was sold at the principal stores. He made contacts with boarding houses for an entire season. His store was at the corner of Fourth and Main Streets, known as Gunkle's Corner. His motto was 'Good Quality, Small Profits, Quick Sales.'

Haverstraw resident, Richard Holland Sr., "has memories of this bakery dating back to 1910." He wrote recently in the Haverstraw Times :

''Charles Mardorf (Frederick Mardorf's son) and Mrs. Donohue's father at that time drove his horse-drawn bakery wagon to the brickyard section each morning in time for hot rolls and buns before the breakfast whistle blew on the brickyard of Wood and Allison, where my father was foreman.

“I wonder how many people remember Mardorf's butternut bread, which was sold not only in the bakery, but in most large retail outlets throughout Rockland County?

“I can still vividly recall the ginger snaps, lemon cookies with scalloped edges, the beautiful coffee cakes, the lemon pies made with fresh lemons from Springer's Market on Broadway, the fruit cake and the pumpkin and mine? pies at holiday time.

“All this was accomplished in the days when all baked items were made from the same barrel of flour. There were no specialty flours in those days.

“I did not see (Charles) Mardorf as a baker in action," continued Holland, "but was privileged to see his son Fred (Mrs. Donohue's brother) at work in later years when I was on the road as a bakery flour salesman.

“I called on hundreds of bakers, both large commercial and over-the-counter bakeries, as Mardorf's is known to the bakery salesman. Fred Mardorf was a real artist at his work, both at his bench and at the oven. He decorated wedding and birthday cakes as an artist would paint them.

“Fred is probably one of the last bakers around who could start from scratch and produce any item you requested. His spice cupcakes and black and white cookies were my favorites."

Mardorf's has never had branch stores, although many people have requested them to set up outlets throughout the county, says James Patrick Donahue, the fourth generation of the bakery dynasty and present business manager.

Donohue is a graduate of Holy Cross College and has a master's degree in business administration from Fairleigh-Dickinson University.

The old truck routes that were really "horse-and-buggy" routes in pre-automotive days were discontinued because they were not profitable.

The bakery now has limited sales to restaurants and churches "out-of-store" but continues to rely on the “over-the-counter" sales for most of its business.

There are now nine workers on the bakery staff at Mardorf's in a business which used to be an all-night operation.

“In pre-refrigeration days," says Donohue, "doughs had to be baked immediately when mixed to keep from spoiling."

He remembers when the bakery had a rear courtyard and stables where the bakery wagon horses were kept.

His grandmother used to can and cook all the fruits for the baked goods. Today's automated processes include rolling-pin machines and machines to stuff baked goods with fruit fillings.

The Mardorfs used to live above the store and bakery workers were also housed in the same building.

Three years ago, the bakery expanded to include a sales salon of party products. In future years, expansion may take on other forms but for the present Mardorf's is holding its own.

“Our greatest problem," continues Donohue, "is to find bakers who are competent." To tackle this problem, Mardorf's is taking part in the apprenticeship training program of the Manpower Development Training Act. The bakery hopes to enlist future workers for its ranks through this program.

Mardorf's also sports a plaque declaring its participation in the President's Council on Youth Opportunity.
