For National Boating Day: The Yacht Club Boys
For National Boating Day: The Yacht Club Boys
Congress declared July 1 to be National Boating Day in 2017, and under the assumption that this remains the case, we pick today for a little exploration of the stage and screen phenomenon known as The Yacht Club Boys. The Yacht Club Boys’ act very savvily smashed together two classic show biz trends: the “comedy four” and the Jazz Age collegiate act. Comedy Fours had originally been dominant in…

My US Voting Record:
I made this with the help of wikipedia, google and posts like voting guides which I found online.
Note: I would have been a Monarchist during the Revolutionary War, but I'd probably still vote if living in America (No matter how displeased the revolution made me, I'd probably still always be willing to vote). But to show my dissatisfaction, every vote until 1824 is a protest vote:
1788: Nobody (I refuse to vote for George Washington). Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1792: Nobody (I refuse to vote for George Washington). Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1796: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1800: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1804: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1808: Maybe a write in protest vote for King George III?
1812: Protest Vote for King George III (I can't vote for anyone after the War of 1812 got started)
1816: Protest Vote for King George III (again, I don't know if I'd be able to forgive anyone after the War of 1812)
1820: Protest Vote for King George IV (I can't support Monroe after he helped fight 1812 against Canada and the British).
1824: Henry Clay/Nathan Sanford
1824 Contingent: John Quincy Adams
1828: John Quincy Adams/Richard Rush
1832: Henry Clay/John Sergeant
1836: Daniel Webster/Francis Granger or William Henry Harrison/Francis Granger
1840: William Henry Harrison/John Tyler
1844: Henry Clay/Theodore Frelinghuysen
1848: Martin Van Buren/Charles F. Adams
1852: John P. Hale/George W. Julian
1856: John C. Frémont/William L. Dayton
1860: Abraham Lincoln/Hannibal Hamlin
1864: Abraham Lincoln/Andrew Johnson
1868: Ulysses S. Grant/Schuyler Colfax

1880: James A. Garfield/Chester A. Arthur
1884: Grover Cleveland/Thomas A. Hendricks
1888: Benjamin Harrison/Levi P. Morton

1904: Eugene V. Debs/Benjamin Hanford
1908: William Jennings Bryan/John Kern
1912: Eugene V. Debs/Emil Seidel
1916: Allan L. Benson/George R. Kirkpatrick
1920: Eugene V. Debs/Seymour Stedman
1924: Robert M. LaFollette/Burton K. Wheeler
1928: Al Smith/Joseph T. Robinson (although Herbert Hoover and Charles Curtis aren't bad either. I might've been a prohibitionist then, considering I hate the taste of alcohol. But Smith opposed lynching. So he gets my vote).
1932: Norman Thomas/James H. Maurer
1936: Norman Thomas/George A. Nelson
1940: Norman Thomas/Maynard Krueger
1944: Norman Thomas/Darlington Hoopes
1948: Henry A. Wallace/Glen H. Taylor
1952: Adlai Stevenson II/John Sparkman
1956: Adlai Stevenson II/Estes Kefauver

1964: Lyndon B. Johnson/Hubert Humphrey
1968: Hubert Humphrey/Edmund Muskie
1972: George McGovern/Sargent Shriver (although I still really like Thomas Eagleton as VP)
1976: Gerald Ford/Bob Dole
1980: Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale
1984: Walter Mondale/Geraldine Ferraro
1988: Willa Kenoyer/Ron Ehrenreich (I hear Michael Dukakis went to high school with the guy who founded the Judge Rotenberg Centre, which is a terrible place. So I can't vote for Dukakis. Can't take a chance on him with that history).
1992: Ross Perot/James Stockdale
1996: Ross Perot/Pat Choate
2000: Ralph Nader/Winona Laduke
2004: Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo
2008: Ralph Nader/Matt Gonzalez
2012: Barack Obama/Joe Biden (Beginning in 2012, I'd probably start voting for Democrats more often because I felt I had no choice. But I'm still a bit unhappy with them. Haven't been since 1988 or 1992).
2016: Gloria La Riva/Eugene Puryear
2020: Joe Biden/Kamala Harris (My heart says Howie Hawkins/Angela Walker, however).

But can we really be sure that the speed of light wasn’t different in the past, or perhaps in other parts of the universe? In fact, variable speed of light theories have long been used to try to explain everything from dark energy to gravity itself. Let’s explore how constant this fundamental constant really is. THE ECHO
1910
Tumblr media
The Echo is a musical in two acts by Deems Taylor (music, lyrics, book) and William de Baron (lyrics, book), featuring songs by DeWitt C. Coolman, Al Piantadosi, P.H. Christine, Nathaniel D. Ayer, Jerome Kern, Jean Schwartz, Karl Hoschna, Worton David, George Arthurs, Edward B. Claypoole, James R. Brewers, Felix F. Feist, John L. Golden, A. Seymour Brown, M.E. Rourke, William Jerome, and George V. Hobart.
The shear number of “contributors” to Taylor’s score was remarkable, but not unusual for the time.
Tumblr media
The original production was produced by Charles Dillingham, staged by Fred G. Latham and choreographed by William Rock and Al Holbrook. The Echo actually began in Chicago a year earlier, but without headliner Bessie McCoy.
Tumblr media
In the Broadway incarnation, the musical starred (above the title) Bessie McCoy, The Dolly Sisters, and a young George White (later of the George White Scandals) in a company of fifty, although ads later touted 100. This inflated claim likely included orchestra and production crew.
Tumblr media
The musical is set at the Echo House, hotel and restaurant, in New England. McCoy played Kate, the Echo’s singing and dancing waitress.
Tumblr media
The world premiere of The Echo was staged at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on August 10, 1910. Newspaper reports that she was “all but exhausted” are telling as the star had a history of ill health.
Tumblr media
Bessie McCoy was born in Ireland in 1888 as Elizabeth Genevieve McEvoy. Her mother and father were a vaudeville act known as McCoy and McEvoy, Irish clog dancers. In later vaudeville, she was best known for her 1908 hit song and dance routine "The Yama Yama Man", for which she became known as "The Yama Yama Girl". She became famous for her lazy, husky singing while performing unusual acrobatic dance routines while dressed in a clown’s pajama suit and a fools cap. Her husband was the war correspondent Richard Harding Davis. She appeared in a number of Broadway musicals, but came to fame in The Echo. After Harding's early death from a heart-attack, McCoy retired from stage work.
Tumblr media
The Echo moved from Atlantic City directly to Broadway, where it opened at the Globe Theatre (now the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, Broadway and 46th Street) on August 17, 1910. It ran 53 performances. It was only the second booking at the newly-constructed Globe, which opened its door in January 1910. Charles Dillingham built the theatre to house his own productions. It was the first ever theater with a retractable roof!

“On hot nights the ceilings of the Globe will be removed by an ingenious mechanical device and the auditorium thrown open to the sky. The clouds overhead are expected to be the favorite rendezvous of aviators during the warm evening of August and September.” ~ Wilkes-Barre Times Leader
Dillingham, in financial distress during the Great Depression, lost the Globe in 1931. 1931 was also not a good year for Bessie McCoy. While in France with her 16-year-old daughter Hope, she died suddenly after an emergency intestinal operation.

Charles Bancroft Dillingham (1868-1934) was a powerful and important theatre manager and producer of over 200 Broadway shows.  A “confirmed bachelor,” he was the live-in companion of another Broadway titan, his mentor Charles Frohman, who died on the Lusitania. Dillingham was also the owner of the Hippodrome, which in its time was the largest theatrical venue in the world.
A story (possibly apocryphal) says that in his decline, he was spotted by someone who recognized him. Not to embarrass Dillingham, the man struck up a casual conversation with a rhetorical question.
MAN: “Say, whatever happened to old [names a Broadway has been]?” DILLINGHAM: “I don’t know. Whatever happened to Charles Dillingham?”
Dillingham died of bronchopneumonia on August 30, 1934 at the Hotel Astor where he lived. But back to The Echo...

Deems Taylor (composer) was thrilled as this was his first big break in show business. He was so sure of Broadway fame and fortune that he proposed marriage to Jane Anderson (above) and moved into a fashionable apartment overlooking the Hudson River. Despite good reviews, however, attendance was flagging. Dillingham reasoned that theatre-goers still preferred operetta to musical comedy and decided to close the show and move another into his Globe. The good news for Taylor was that Bessie McCoy had decided to tour The Echo, surely generating Taylor some royalty income. That is, if he could convince the frugal Dillingham to pay him.

One of the songs not by Deems Taylor was named “Skiddy-mer-rink-a-doo” (Means I Love You)” by Al Piantadosi and Felix F. Feist. It was the final number of the evening in The Echo. It became a popular children’s song still with us today. Because of its nonsense lyrics, it is often titled “Skina-mer-rink-a-doo” but the melody is the same. It was popularized in the 1980s by Canada’s Sharon, Lois, and Bram.

The Echo started its post-Broadway tour in Washington DC. On the way, it stopped back in New Jersey, where it began, this time in Newark. At Christmas, and for a month thereafter, the show played a sit-down in Boston.

By the time it got to Rochester, McCoy’s tentative state of health reached crisis mode. She eventually recuperated and rejoined the show, which continued its tour until The Echo ceased reverberating in March 1911, somewhat inauspiciously, in Toledo.

Instead of “a new musical comedy written especially to suit her” McCoy joined The Ziegfeld Follies of 1911. Once again, The Dolly Sisters, George White, and Jerome Kern’s music were on the bill.  Like The Echo, the show premiered at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City on June 21, 1911...but that’s another blog.
