i finished If We Were Villains yesterday and i have a few thoughts on characters.

while i was reading i couldn’t help being a little disappointed because all of the characters were so alive and vivid except, in my opinion, Wren. And i’ve been thinking about it since Oliver is so thoughtful in his depictions of his friends and obviously loves them so much, and he never says anything bad about Wren he just honestly doesn’t think of her much.

I think the reason that he’s so dismissive of Wren in some ways is because he’s jealous of her relationship with James. Just how like James is so dismissive of Meredith because of her relationship with Oliver.

Oliver even says when Wren and James kissed as Romeo and Juliet that he was “savagely jealous”. Before this moment, Oliver is fine with her presence, like how he allows her to put her arm around him during the Caesar party, durning the King Lear party, however, he leaves the room as soon as they are left alone together in it. Now this could also just be his guilt about Richard, but I think it is very telling that he leaves her alone when she is obviously upset.

So while it might not even be a conscious effort on Oliver’s part, like how it is with James and Meredith, I think that the reason we get so little development on Wren as opposed to all the others stems from Oliver’s jealousy and want for James’ whole attention and affection.
