It Happened One Night (1934) Ending Explained & Spoilers: What Happens at the End?
This time we’re going way back in time. Thanks to my film challenge of wanting to see all the films that influenced Martin Scorsese, this classic ended up in the Blu-ray player. Apart from some blurry back wall projections, looks IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT surprisingly fresh, which is also thanks to the second dubbing from 1979. Clark Gable, for example, is voiced by Norbert Langer (Burt Reynolds, Tom…

Early Hitchcock

Lillian Hall-Davis and Jameson Thomas in The Farmer's Wife
Anny Ondra, Carl Brisson, and Malcolm Keen in The Manxman
The Ring (Alfred Hitchcock, 1927)
Cast: Carl Brisson, Ian Hunter, Lillian Hall-Davis, Forrester Harvey, Harry Terry, Gordon Harker. Screenplay: Alfred Hitchcock. Cinematography: Jack E. Cox.
The Farmer's Wife (Alfred Hitchcock, 1928)
Cast: Jameson Thomas, Lillian Hall-Davis, Gordon Harker, Louie Pounds, Maud Gill, Olga Slade, Ruth Maitland. Screenplay: Eliot Stannard, based on a play by Eden Phillpotts. Cinematography: Jack E. Cox.
The Manxman (Alfred Hitchcock, 1929)
Cast: Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen, Anny Ondra, Randle Ayrton, Clare Greet. Screenplay: Eliot Stannard, based on a novel by Hall Caine. Cinematography: Jack E. Cox.
These nicely restored silent Hitchcock films don't have a lot that's "Hitchcockian" about them except his ability to tell a story visually. Even compared to his other silents like Downhill (1927) and especially The Lodger (1927), they feel a little routine. What sets them apart from his later work is the focus on working-class people: carnival workers, farmers, and fishermen. Two of them are romantic melodramas involving a love triangle, the other a comedy about a widower in search of a wife. The Ring is the liveliest, with an impressive opening sequence that establishes the carnival setting with some kinetic camerawork and introduces the hero, "One-Round" Jack Sander (Carl Brisson), a carny boxer who takes on all comers, with the promise that anyone who lasts more than one round with him wins a pound. His girlfriend, Mabel (Lillian Hall-Davis), is the ticket-taker, and our first sight of Jack in the ring comes as she pulls up a flap between her booth and the interior -- a characteristic Hitchcock point-of-view take. Hitchcock also doesn't show the fights at first, only the boastful contenders being knocked back by Jack's punches, until his real antagonist, the professional fighter Bob Corby (Ian Hunter), puts up a real fight. From there, it's a story of Jack's rise as a pro and Mabel's increasing infatuation with Corby, even after she marries Jack. This is the only film on which Hitchcock took a solo credit as screenwriter, and though it's an entirely predictable plot, it's a workable one. Brisson, the handsome Danish actor who plays Jack, returns in The Manxman, which is somewhat overplotted -- it's based on a popular novel. Once again, he's on the outs in a marriage. Pete (Brisson), a fisherman, loves Kate (Anny Ondra), a publican's daughter, who agrees to wait for him while he earns his fortune on an overseas voyage, but she also loves Philip (Malcolm Keen), Pete's best friend, a lawyer with ambitions to become a "deemster," the name for a judge on the Isle of Man. And when a report comes that Pete has been killed, she and Philip feel free to indulge their love, though his family opposes their marriage as destructive to his ambitions -- apparently Philip's father damaged his career by marrying beneath him. When Pete turns up very much alive, he marries Kate, who is pregnant with Philip's child, whereupon much anguish ensues. Eliot Stannard wrangles the material from the Hall Caine novel into something coherent, but Hitchcock rarely seems terribly interested in it. The Farmer's Wife gives Hitchcock a chance to show off a talent for comic pacing that he rarely exhibited in his later career except in the "lighter side" moments of his thrillers and in such marginally successful comedies as Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) and The Trouble With Harry (1955). The film opens with Farmer Sweetland's (Jameson Thomas) wife on her deathbed, followed shortly by the marriage of their daughter, leaving the farmer open to suggestions that he needs to take a new wife. Completely, and somewhat illogically, ignoring the pretty housekeeper, Araminta (Lillian Hall-Davis), he courts -- disastrously -- some obviously unsuitable local women before realizing that Araminta is the one for him. A hint of misogyny pervades The Farmer's Wife in the comic portrayals of the mannish Widow Windeatt (Louie Pounds), the prudish Thirza Tapper (Maud Gill), and the hysterics-prone Mary Hearn (Olga Slade). It could be said that a similar misogyny colors the portrayals of Mabel in The Ring and Kate in The Manxman, women who seem to have no fixity in their affections. But Hitchcock was never the most "woke" director when it came to the treatment of women in his films.

Thoughts that I wanted to share about the brothers Hawthorne/ the grandest game bc I don’t wanna make a million posts about each one 💀
1: Phone girls dad literally shot himself ON. HER. BIRTHDAY. 😭😭
2: Skye Hawthorne MIGHT be in the grandest game, because when Avery got bombed and Ricky and skye got arrested for it, they found out that it actually wasn’t them which means they prob got out of jail (maybe not Ricky but probably skye) and she might be controlling one of the players
3: WE’LL PROBABLY GET TO SEE A SUNSHINE X GRUMPY TROPE!! (Mathias and Gigi)
4: we’ll see which 7 contestants avery will pick for the game!! (While I was writing that instead of contestants I accidentally put tributes 💀)
5: we might learn more about Toby’s backstory (or just the Hawthorne backstories in general, like Zara’s, nans or Alice’s)
6: speaking of Alice, SOMEHOW THAT OLD GRANDMAS GOING TO BE ALIVE
7: this isn’t really a prediction but more just like a possible hint for the grandest game, but when grayson tells his brothers about the riddle “what begins a bet? Not that”, Jameson says this
Tumblr media
He says “what’s the opposite of a handshake?” And I found a picture online that shows multiple different options of what could be the opposite of a handshake
Tumblr media
Basically most of the words on there kind of show “misinterpretation” or just different words for some sort of mistake, so would that mean that the “beef” (im just gonna call it that bc I don’t rlly know what went down) between tobias and thomas thomas was maybe accidental?? Or maybe they got into a disagreement that ended in thomas ending his life? All the book really shows is that one paragraph (that I highlighted in green) that talks about what Jameson thought of the riddle, and then Jameson was talking to Avery about the game (probs bc jlb didn’t wanna drop too many hints lmao) And then if you add it in with the “abet” theory ⬇️
Tumblr media
It said that one of the opposites of a handshake were “refusal” and “disagreement”, so what if tobias had wanted thomas to aid one of his crimes and thomas refused, and maybe tobias gave him an ultimatum which is why he shot himself?? It’s so confusing bc what would tobias even do that was so horrible that thomas had to shoot himself, I really don’t know. but if anyone has some theory’s on this pls lmk! 🫶
8: holy guacamole 7 was a long one, but anyway i feel like there are definitely more hints on the grandest game in the brothers Hawthorne then there were in the final gambit, even though in (i think tig is the one that clue was from?) the inheritance games “special” edition bc idk what their called it said “hints in the final gambit”. (although one loose end from tig was David Golding, and @riddles-n-games had a good theory about that) But i read the final gambit entirely and didn’t find a single clue other than David, so that’s kinda weird (unless somebody else found something else they found interesting in that book?)
9: Eve might also be behind one of the players, or just trying to get involved with the game so she could get the cash prize or whatever else it is that that psycho needs 🙄
10: we’ll (most likely, bc I’m 99.9% sure that she’ll be in tgg) see what phone girl looks like and see which one of us were right 😜
11: kinda random but i will bet a whole 5 dollars that phone girls name is either gonna be flower related, or just straight up be lily. Or maybe both, but just think of how ironic that would be (there are calla lilys all over the cover of tgg… 🤷‍♀️)
12: LIBBY NASH WEDDING!!! 🤭🤭🤭💗
13: so off topic but WHERE DO GRAYSON AND JAMESON GET THEIR MONEY FROM??? like I’m sure jameson probably gets some cash from his billionaire girlfriend, but what about grayson?? he says in tbh that he’s “buried in work” but what kind of work does he do?? and who does he work for?? 🤨
14: Okay this is gonna be the last one bc i need to shut up, but does anybody have an idea on what some things in the grandest game cover might symbolize? we know about the lilys and the opal rings, but other than that i CANT seem to figure out anything else on there 😭😭
and okay that’s all thank you for coming to my ted talk 🫶😊🙌

Things that mean different things in my different fandoms:
Puppets:
For Thomas it's a happy learning moment
For Mark it's angst time with a possibility of death
For Jack it's just a scary, scary death
2.Dark sides:
For Thomas, it's Virgil, Remus, and Janus
For Mark, it's Dark (The original dark side)
For Jack, it's Anti (The original glitch bitch)
3.Actors/Acting
For Thomas, it's Roman and an opportunity
For Mark, it's ‘Actor Mark’ and Manipulation
For Jack, it's what he has to do to fake cry during his projects, have you seen that?! I was stunned! Speechless!
4.Loops
Thomas’s most severe problem with loops is fruit
Mark is trapped in literal time loops and space tears in the fabric of the universe
Jack is stuck in ‘Fucking circles’ doing things ‘over and over’
5.Choices
Thomas, very calmly, goes through his choices in every episode with each of his sides
Mark doesn’t really get a choice, but you do! You get many choices
Jack really has no choice and is stuck in the middle of whatever the fuck Anti and IRIS are doing
6.Interview
Thomas’s 5 year anniversary babey!
Mark’s universe just has Wilford asking some questions
Jack, please, give Chase a break! He’s just a boy!

A treat from the Butlers Pantry;; MINORS DNI
“Would you be ever so kind as to get the middle of my back? I can never seem to reach.” Lord James asked as he held out the soap to his butler, Thomas. Thomas sat the towel that he was preparing, down upon the basin, and walked over to the bathtub, careful that he didn’t sleep on the steam-tiled floor. Adjusting the sleeves of his shirt so they wouldn’t get wet, he bent down upon his knees as he took the soap from James's hand. As requested, Thomas slathered the soap over James’s back where he couldn’t reach, running both soap and fingertips over the bare skin of the Lord that he serves. Both men were quiet. James, leaned forward slightly to allow Thomas full access, focusing on how good Thomas’s fingers felt against his skin. It wasn’t the first time he had asked Thomas to wash his back. Nor would it be the last. Before Thomas could move his hand away as he finished cupping the water and gently splashing it over James’s back to remove the soapy residue, James grabbed his wrist and guided it to his chest and then beneath the water. “You missed a spot, Thomas.” Thomas’s lips lifted in a smirk as his fingers brushed against something quite hard. “Seems like someone’s enjoying their bath.” Before James could answer, his lips parted as he let out a sharp gasp as Thomas’s fingers wrapped around his length, giving it a gentle squeeze. James was too ashamed to admit how long he had lusted for this moment without doing anything about it. James’s head tilted backward and rested on Thomas’s shoulder, quietly suppressing little gasps against the material of Thomas’s uniform. It didn’t help that Thomas’s velvety voice was encouraging James on, “That’s it, My Lord, let me take care of you.” As gentle as his voice was, so was the painstakingly slow movement of his hand. Squeezing up... and gently squeezing down. This wasn’t the first time Thomas performed extra services for his lord, nor would it be the last. Thomas didn’t mind. Not as ideal as he’d like it to be, this was the easiest and safest option. They were never disturbed during James’s bath-time. It was the ideal opportune moment for the two extremely forbidden lovers….

Egotober Day 31: Happy Halloween
You’ve heard so many stories this month, some spooky, some cute, some scary, some moreso moments in their lives. But on this night of All Hallow’s Eve, Samhain, Halloween instead of telling a story….let’s see instead how those that the stories were about celebrate this night.
The first home we’ll visit in the Septic home, it’s a few stories and more like a bunch of apartments fused together in one building with help from Marvin’s magic. They didn’t go completely all crazy with decorating, oh they love the holiday but a certain glitch has made them all wary about a few aspects of it. Still, there’s paper jack o lanterns hanging up, a candy bowl out for trick or treaters, streamers in orange and black, baked goods in the oven, a Halloween movie marathon set to play when they get ready and they’re all dressed up.
Chase is Hawkeye, his favorite Avenger, Marvin is Doctor Strange, his ears hid in the sweeps of his hair, Henrik is a plague doctor, Jackie is in a new version of a Spider-Man suit because obviously, and Jameson was convinced into a Bloodborne Good Hunter costume. They’re all happy and enjoying themselves, planning to visit Jack before the night is out, but there’s a little worry that they can’t really help about what the glitch might do tonight. But they’re all prepared just in case, Marvin’s cards are charged with spells, Chase has iron arrows, James has his throwing knives and watch, Jackie has his powers and Henrik has a few potions Marvin helped him make.
Anti, isn’t at the Septic house tonight, he’s out enjoying the freedom the night brings the hunters like him. He may go have fun with the Septics later, he might not, he hasn’t decided yet as he’s having too much fun ‘playing’ with whatever human catches his fancy. His costume? It changes depending on who he wants to leave a message for, he’s sometimes Venom, sometimes a blood starved Beast, sometimes a plague ridden creature, or Bullseye or Mephisto…but he knows even without a costume his puppets will recognize him tonight.
The next home we’ll go to is the old manor that is a home to the Ipliers. It’s decorated to the nines with cute, spooky, creepy and terrifying all mixed together. Ghosts, skeletons, spiders, black cats, spider webbing, fake blood, you name it Wilford put it in along with a gigantic bowl of candy on the porch. He even managed to convince Dark to let him put up orange and black and green confetti poppers as long as there was no glitter. The manor is in the middle of a party, there’s a movie and decompression area if all the social interaction gets too much, and of course everyone’s in costume.
Dark, as much as he sighed about the idea at first, was talked into being Moon Knight, Wilford is Willy Wonka, The Host decided to be the Prophet from Darkest Dungeon, Bim is Alucard from Hellsing, Eric was coaxed into dressing up as Lucio from Overwatch, Prime, Red, Green, Ollie all dressed up as circus characters, Prime the ringleader, Red the strongman, Green the fire breathed and Ollie the Lion tamer, Bing came as Freddy due ti the upcoming movie they’re all excited for and Night is in a black purple Greek toga as one of his older incarnations as Erebus.
There’s food and drink set out and one of them is there whenever Wilford goes to get a drink as everyone remembers last time his powers got out of control when he was a bit too sugared up or tipsy and no one needs to reset the house tonight. But all in all…it’s really nice that they can all relax and enjoy themselves.
The last home we’ll go to is the Sanders Sides residence, a match for Thomas’ home in reality. It’s less scary and more spooky/creepy and cute, bowl of big candy bars on the porch for trick or treaters, a few pun ghost plushies holding cards or buckets to be taken home. Inside it’s set up for movies and food and fun. There’s a few more tastefully bloody things inside from Remus begging and promising to save the slasher films for after Patton went to bed.
Patton is a cat, Logan is Iron Man, Virgil is a version of the Crow from the cult classic films with a plushie crow on one shoulder, Remus is a less gorey zombie, Roman is Cinderella’s Prince Charming and Janus is Jekyll and Hyde.
Who will you go to visit? Will you go and share stories with them again tonight, scary or otherwise? Regardless of what you choose my friends, there will be plenty of T̡̛r͟i͜c̵̡k҉̕s͏ and Treats waiting for you.

Feverish (Platonic JJ, Virgil, Roman)
A self indulgent sick-fic.
Despite already being bundled in a blanket, JJ shivered again, eyes closed against the dim lighting of the room. His sleep was fitful and sporadic, and his brief, feverish dreams didn't help matters.
A knock at the door startled him, and he peeked an eye open cautiously. When the door opened, light from the hall streamed in, and he was quick to shut his eyes tight again. Still, despite his eyes being closed, he recognized the soft voice of the younger Side.
"How are you feeling?" Virgil closed the door behind himself, leaving it open just a crack so he could find it in the dark room. When a small slide produced by JJ just indicated a groan, he hummed and took a seat on the edge of the bed. "Have you been able to sleep at all?" Gently, he placed a hand on JJ's forehead, gauging his temperature before brushing some of his hair back.
"... No." The text on JJ's subtitle slide glowed softly so it could be read in the darkness, though the small letters indicated the whisper that would have come with it, had he actually spoken. He peeked back at Virgil, though he couldn't make out much more than his shape in the darkness
The Side hummed again, cupping his cheek— he didn't bring up the fact that JJ leaned into the touch, aware that he was searching for more heat— before glancing back at the door. "Think you could stomach some soup?"
JJ grumbled softly, incoherent even on the slide, but it took him a long moment to actually decide on an answer. He had to imagine the process first but when the idea didn't make him queasy, he nodded softly. "I think so."
The Side smiled and nodded, moving to gently ruffle JJ's hair before standing up again. "I'll go make some, okay?" He could see the other's faint nod, though he didn't pick up on the disappointed expression in the dark. "Did you want anything else?" Again, JJ shook his head. "Okay," his voice grew softer, "Ro's gonna be here in a bit." And with that, he quietly slipped back out of the room.
Silence settled in the room, and JJ idly shut his eyes again. They stung from his lack of proper sleep, but there truly wasn't anything that he could do to alleviate that. Without rest, the best he could do was keep them closed and relax. With the room staying quiet save for a small clock ticking in the corner, it was fairly easy for the Septic Ego to get lost in his train of thoughts.
However, this only made it easier for him to be surprised by the soft knock at the door. Again, he peered towards it warily, though he was quick to relax at the sight of the creative Side. For a moment, he only stared, but then he reached an arm out towards Roman, a wordless way to beckon him closer.
Roman did the same as Virgil had just minutes before, leaving the door open somewhat so he would be able to find it again when he inevitably needed it. "Hey kiddo, I just bumped into Virge. How're you feeling?"
JJ was silent for a moment as he watched Roman put something down on the bedside table, mulling over an answer. Eventually, he settled on pulling the blankets closer. "... Cold."
The older Ego hummed, softly pressing his wrist to JJ's forehead. "Well, I've got something to help the fever here, but it won't warm you up..."
Before JJ could figure out what that meant, Roman was brushing his hair back again, then dabbing a cool, damp cloth to his forehead. He shivered, making a half-hearted attempt to push his head away, shocked by the dramatic temperature difference.
Roman smiled sympathetically. "Sorry kiddo, I promise it'll help." His hand shifted to card his fingers through JJ's hair, then pat him on the head gently as he took back the cloth. "Henrik suggested I get something else for you, too..."
JJ peered up at him, then followed the movement of his hand to the shape on the nightstand. He watched blearily, but he lit up when the owl plush was offered to him, and he was quick to hold it to his chest. "... Thank you."
The Side hummed softly to acknowledge the words, reaching to gently mess with JJ's hair again. "It's no problem, James. We want to be sure you're comfortable." He fell quiet for a moment before slowly standing, "I know Virgil's getting you soup, but how about some tea?"
His gaze moved from the plush in his arms back to the Side when he stood up, and automatically he reached to grab the end of Roman's sleeve. His grip was loose, but it was enough to make the other pause. "... Can you lay with me for a while?" He was embarrassed to ask the question, but he really didn't want to be left alone. Sure, it wouldn't be for terribly long, but both of the Sides had been in and out of the room all day trying to make him feel better. Right now, he just wanted to cuddle.
When Roman glanced at the door for a moment, JJ was worried he would leave, but he was pleasantly surprised when the other turned back and nodded. He sat on the edge of the bed, and JJ scooted over to give him more space.
"I guess this means you don't want tea?" Roman murmured lightheartedly as he laid down on top of the blankets, facing JJ.
The only response he offered was a silent hum as he moved closer. Roman was warm, and JJ couldn't help but shiver again before burying his face in the other's chest. He still hugged the plush close, but he couldn't help but feel more comfortable with the Side next to him as well.
When JJ didn't seem to be willing to give any other response, Roman settled on carefully wrapping an arm around him— tight enough to hold him close, but still loose enough that he could get away if he so pleased. The other snuggled into the hug though, and he let out a quiet laugh. "Get some sleep if you can, kiddo."
When Virgil returned to the room with a small bowl of chicken soup, he was surprised to see the two figures cuddled together. He laughed to himself, rolling his eyes as he set the warm bowl down on the nightstand.
Roman, barely awake, turned his head to look at him. "What's up, stormcloud?"
The younger Side sighed playfully, kissing him on the cheek. "You're just going to get yourself sick too, you know?"
