Silver and the Book of Dreams

Creating a new story from well tread ground is never easy. But Helena Hufnagel and Sina Flammang still manage to put their own spin on the dreams-as-reality genre (adapted from Kerstin Gier’s novel). This isn’t a Freddy Kruger story, it’s the story of a group of teens trying to find their way in the world and how far they’re willing to go to get to their goals.

But in trying to skip past the drudge of the pretty well understood setup, Hufnagel compacts the action and reduces the reactions to speed things along. Some of this works quite well. Teens are great at just accepting the world at face value and responding to it without questioning the foundation. But some of the logic leaps, and certainly some of the acceptance of disaster and danger, are just too easy. It makes for a breezier movie, but it lessens the credibility and feel of the stakes.

Jana McKinnon is a solid lead with some great screen presence. She takes control of her situation almost immediately and helps drive it through to the end. There are a number of up and coming faces around her as well, Chaneil Kular and Rhys Mannion primarily. But the script limits the impact of anyone’s performance. There is little opportunity for nuance or depth. The story bolts out of the gate quickly and just keeps driving forward. Again, great for a distraction, but not exactly a great flick. But it is reasonable entertainment for an evening if you like teen horror movies. Silver also makes for an interesting calling card for the creatives and what they may come up with next.

Jesse St James and Maisie Clark. Maisie and Jesse were hooking up for about a month before he just started ignoring her. When she found him on a date with one of her close friends, Rachel, Maisie cried herself to sleep for weeks. But then she became the powerhouse singer that she knew that she could be. Only when Rachel and Jesse broke up did he talk to her.

Betty Dugray and Stella Geller. Betty and Stella have been best friends ever since they can remember. When they turned 14, they both confessed their long hidden feelings for each other and immediately started a romantic relationship.

Maeve Gilmore and Jess Mariano. She is the twin sister of Rory. When the twins were 1, Lorelai decided to leave home. But she knew that she couldn't take both twins. So, she packed up her stuff and took her namesake, Lorelai 'Rory' and left Maeve in the care of her grandparents. When Maeve was 10, she found out that her 'parents' were actually her grandparents and that her mom had left her behind when she started her own life. This caused Maeve to become very withdrawn and not socialize with others. Her existing friends, Betty, Harrison, Stella and Kathryn, became extremely protective of their friend, especially when Rory came to Chilton and Lorelai came back into Maeve's life. Her grandparents forced her to spend more time in Stars Hollow, CT and because of this, she met Jess Mariano and the two instantly connected. 

Emma Warren and Lexie Grey. Emma is an intern and the little sister of Ben Warren. The minute that she meets Lexie Grey, there is an instant connection.

Janae O’Malley and Andrew DeLuca. Janae is the younger sister of George O'Malley. When her brother passed away, she decided to become a doctor like her brother. She even got accepted to the same Hospital for her intern year that he was in. Her first day was rough but then she saw Andrew De Luca, her childhood best friend. 

Cypress Brown and Oliver Wood. Cypress is the older sister of Lavender Brown. Being the captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team, she always was the rival of Oliver Wood, the captain of the Gryffindor team.

Dahlia Tonks and Hermione Granger. Dahlia was sorted into Gryffindor, surprising both her parents and her older sister. She quickly became friends with Hermione Granger but she stayed away from Harry and Rob because they were too loud for her.

Ronald Weasley and Maxine Diggory. Maxine and Ron fell in love during first year but Maxine was worried about what her brother would do (because of how protective he was) so the two kids kept it secret til their third year.

Delilah Pettigrew and Marlene McKinnon. Marlene and Delilah have been rivals since they began Hogwarts, with Marlene being a Gryffindor and Delilah being a Hufflepuff. They were number 2 and 3 in their year (Lily was way above them). It angered Delilah to work so hard for her grades and to watch Marlene hardly work for them. One night, Delilah gets drunk and rambles all this to Marlene herself, including her deeply hidden feelings for the Gryffindor.

Sirius Black and Evie Potter. Evie had never been a fan of of Sirius as she thought that he was mean to the younger kids and the Slytherins. Being best friends with his younger brother, she understood where he was coming from. During her fourth year, Sirius moved in with her parents. While she felt bad for him, she didn’t appreciate him leaving his brother behind. She was the one to bring Regulus to their home, saving his life. Evie and Sirius argued all the time, until one night where his heated words really hurt her and she wasn’t herself.
