Costume Updates: 2023 West End Cast Change

A few notes before I start: - Kayleigh McKnight (Seymour) is currently injured. Gabriella Stylianou (alt A/S) is temporarily performing in her place, including in the preview footage. - As a general rule of thumb, Six has slowly been standardizing the costumes for both US and UK. Most of that has been changes to the UK system/style to make them more in line with the US changes initially made for Broadway (a few changes have made their way to the US from the UK though). There's been a steady rollout of updates over the period post-lockdowns, but with this cast change most of the major holdouts have been changed at once. I'll get to that in a moment. - Obviously it's very early in the run and we haven't seen all the costumes yet, particularly for alts. I'll continue to update as we do.

Costumes (credits below) - Nikki Bentley's Aragon costume has had a few construction changes to be more in line with the US costumes. No major design differences, though. Not sure on maker yet. - Thảo Therése Nguyễn has the darker green which has been standardized for the last few UK casts. Not sure on maker yet. - Gabriella was previously with Norwegian Cruise Lines as part of Bliss 2.0, but as expected she did get a new costume. Her corset is in the US style/design rather than the UK style (info here, here). I'm not sure who made it and very much wondering if the corset only could be a US-make, but don't have enough information yet to know if that could be the case. I'm also waiting to see what Kayleigh's looks like. - Reca Oakley (Cleves) is another former NCL queen, but as expected she also did get a new costume. It was made by Paul Aspinall. - Inez Budd's Howard skirt has been changed to the US-style construction. This has smaller panels (rather than the old NCL/UK style; post here). However, unlike the US skirts, the vertical stud lines still go all the way to the bottom hem. Per usual, it was made by Ella Dancewear. - Janiq Charles is a standard Parr style, made by Ashleigh Cherry Costumes per usual. - Otherwise, the costumes seem to be in line with all recent UK standardization. - The alts' costumes should match the changes made for these principals.

Wigs/HMU - Nikki Bentley has an auburn tone with a side part and doesn't seem to have bleached/ombre highlights. Curled bob, a little longer than some we've seen in the past. It's a full wig. - Thảo has dark roots with a silvery-toned bleached wig. It's a long wig rather than some of the recent bobs. It's a full wig. - Gabriella has a side part and darker, honey blonde tone. It's pretty mid-range for Seymour wigs but is shorter than some of the recent UK. It's a full wig. - Janiq Charles has the curls pulled over to the side. It's a full wig. - Otherwise, the principal wigs are pretty standard. - No pictures of Naomi Alade in costume yet, but I am expecting her to have braids for all or most of her roles. - We've also seen quite a bit of the makeup so far, which I'll make a post about in the coming days.

Boots @lightleckrereins already made posts about a lot of this (here, here) but for easy access: - The cast seems to be standardized to a shorter heel than prior casts, like the shorter heel Chlöe Hart and Natalie Pilkington both got later in the 22-23 UK Tour run. - They've introduced the double height boots that the US productions have had for a few years now (explanation of the difference here). However, they're still sticking to the regular UK-style boot body with crystals rather than switching to the US-style lattice and studs. Right now it looks like Nikki Bentley (Aragon) and Janiq Charles (Parr) have the double height, while Reca Oakley (Cleves) has the regular Cleves thigh highs and everyone else seems to have regular single height. Of course, that post includes Gabriella Stylianou rather than Kayleigh McKnight so no good look at Kayleigh or other alts yet. - All the boots seem to have interchangeable straps. We first saw these with the US and then UK alts - it allows them to have one pair of boots with a monochrome silver heel and then just trade out their straps depending on which costume they're wearing. This is the first time we've seen that for principals; Sofia talked more about why this change might be happening in the post I linked at the start of this section.

Alt costumes - We've seen a silver alt costume in progress that should be for Meg Dixon-Brasil. (Made by Paul Aspinall per usual) - We've also seen part of a pink alt costume. It could feasibly be either Natalie Pilkington's or it could be one for Hannah Lowther. Judging from Hannah's makeup, she does seem to have their standard makeup pieces for pink alt. - Naomi Alade has orange palette and glitter, so she presumably has the orange alt costume. - We still don't know what costume Natalie Pilkington will have. She has her old principal Seymour/Parr and pink alt system from the 2022-23 UK Tour, and during the 2021-22 UK Tour she had a black alt costume that was a mishmash of old and new pieces. I'm expecting that she'll wear a black alt costume (either entirely or mostly new), but it's possible that she reuses her old pink alt instead (it has been a while since she's worn black alt and most of it was already old). ☆ Always feels like she has to prove she's a well capable adult, she's 19 for god's sake

Catherine Parr

Wesley Carpenter's Universal Costumes!!

Y'all would not believe how excited I am to be talking about this. I've been hoping ever since Bliss 3.0 closed that we'd get a chance to see Wesley back and I think @lightleckrereins can confirm how much I lost my shit when she returned. So, without further ado, here's the costume breakdown:

Boleyn The top certainly seems like it was altered, so it probably wasn't initially made for her. But it's difficult to identify re-use with Boleyns so I can't easily confirm which, although I have a shortlist of what it may be. Possible that the skirt is new. Her wig is a very typical straight wig with space buns.

Seymour Her corset is Jasmine Forsberg's Aragon Tour corset** with new cups (oh foundation stains how you make me laugh). The skirt looks like it's an older pattern, so I'm inclined to think it's an old NCL skirt.* Wesley has a blonde wig with a center part and some hair pulled to each side. The rest is left down and curled. No bouffant.

Howard The top/corset is definitely new, but leotard is up for debate. She has the typical Howard pony.

Parr With this one we don't have the most thorough photos to compare with, but I suspect the top is Gabriela Carrillo’s tour top.** The peplum seems like it used to be Sydney Parra's. The pants could easily be reused or a new make. She has a back ponytail in the same style that's been slowly standardized for most of the North American mainland queens.

Boots Wesley has the interchangeable strap/neutral heel alt boots with a single thick strap. *Note that now that the NCL run is done and all the final queens have their costumes, ownership of the NCL costumes should be reverting back to Six itself rather than NCL. **Both Jasmine (corset) and Gabriela got a new top for Broadway.

Wow it’s been a while, but hi! New fic, coming at you, live!

Kat isn’t sure Jane knows how much she loves her. Turns out, Jane very much knows.

WC: 1778

It wasn't unusual for any of the girls to go out for a night on the town, and it wasn’t unusual for Jane to politely decline going out for a night on the town. She’d much rather prefer to wind down the night with a glass of wine as opposed to a crazy night of too many drinks and a hangover the next morning. Unfortunately for her, that often left her as the designated driver for the women who chose to go out.

Not that she minded- getting calls at two in the morning almost every weekend from one of her girls to come pick them up was much better than the phone call she could be getting about them trying to drive home under the influence. Oh, she would kill them if she ever got that call.

Most weekends, Jane Seymour sat at home with Kat under her arm and dozing as she waited for Anne or Anna to call her, but this weekend Kat decided to go out with them.

“I’ll be fine Mum,” Kat had said to her as she got ready. “Cathy will be there, and she’ll make sure I’m okay.”

“Okay love,” the woman in gray sighed. “But you know that you can always-”

“I know, I know,” the pink haired woman smiled. “If I feel uncomfortable at any point, you’ll come pick me up.”

“Good,” Jane said quietly and pressed a kiss to her head. “I love you.”

“I love you too, Mum,” Katherine breathed softly as she applied the last of her makeup. She stood and looked at Jane. “Do I look okay?”

“Beautiful, darling,” the blonde said honestly. “You look beautiful.”

Anna had come and picked her up a few hours ago, and Jane was dozing in and out of sleep on the couch when her phone rang for the first of many times that night. Kat’s name and contact picture lit up her phone.

She hurried to answer it, clearing the sleepiness out of her voice. “Hi love.”

“Mum!” Kat’s excited voice rang through the phone, just a bit too loudly. “Mum! I don’t want to come home yet, but I wanted to call you and tell you that I love you!”

Jane could hear the loud club music playing in the background and the slight slur in her daughter’s words. “Okay love,” she chuckled out. “I love you too. Are you having fun?”

“Yes!” Katherine grinned. “So much fun! But I wish you were here!”

“Is Cathy around?”

“She’s right here! Do you want to talk to her?”

“Please, love.” The blonde can hear the phone being shuffled to Cathy, and she can hear her daughter excitedly telling the other woman Jane wanted to speak with her.

“Jane?”

“Is Kat being safe?” is Jane’s immediate question.

“I’m keeping an eye on her. She’s a little... intoxicated, but she’s okay. She’s mostly just dancing with Anne and Anna.”

“O-okay, just... keep an eye on her please. She’s had a bit of a rough week, and I don’t want her to hit that point where all of the-”

“I know Jane,” Cathy laughed into the phone softly. “I’m watching out for her, and if she wants to come home, I’ll give you a call okay? Any other calls, you can just ignore. Her and Anne have been calling pretty much everyone at the show to tell them they love them.”

The blonde couldn’t help but laugh. “Sounds like them.”

That was the first of eight calls Jane got before she got the call from Cathy to come pick the lot up.

“Mum!” Kat’s voice crackled through the phone. “I just- I just wanted to let you know that I love you! Okay, bye!”

“Mum!” The pink haired woman sounded fairly more intoxicated at this point. “I- I wish you were here! Annie and I have been dancing all night, and it’s so much fun! I wish you were here though! I love you!”

“Mum! I- I just got hit on at the bar, and because you taught me how to say no, he walked away! I didn’t even shake! You would’ve been so proud of me if you were here. I’ll be waiting for my kiss on the forehead when you come pick us up!” Jane grinned at that one. She was so proud of her daughter, and she would give her more than just one kiss on the forehead for that feat. “Anyway, I have to go, but I just wanted to tell you that, and that I love you!”

“Mum, I love you! I just wanted to remind you of-” her daughter cut herself off, clearly trying to listen to Anne. “Okay! I’m coming! I have to go Mum, but I love you!”

“Mum! There’s this band here, and wow I think you would love them! They have the coolest vibe! I really like them too! I can dance to it, but it’s a bit softer than the stuff that Anne and Anna like to listen to, and I just wish you were here to listen to it- wait!” She stopped talking, and Jane could hear the music a bit more clearly. It wasn’t bad. “Anyways, I wish you were here to dance with us. Okay, I love you! Bye!”

“Mum!” It was quiet in the background as opposed to the other calls. “I went outside for some air, and don’t worry- Cath is with me, she’s just sitting on the bench watching me while I- well, anyway, I- I just- I hope you know I love you. Like, I really, really love you. I can’t tell you how much I love you and appreciate you, and- thank you for being my mum. I love you, okay bye.”

Jane’s phone rang for the ninth time that night, and it was finally the call that she was waiting for.

“Hey,” she sighed into the phone.

“Hey Janey,” Cathy’s soft voice came through. “We’re ready to come pick us up if you don’t mind. If you’re too tired though, we can always catch a ride.”

“No, no- no need for that hun,” the motherly woman groaned out as she stood from her place on the couch and stretched. “I’ll be there in about ten minutes. Please be ready.”

“We will b-”

“Cath! Are you talking to my mum? Can you tell her I love her?” Kat’s voice rang out.

“Tell my daughter I’ll be there soon, and please- for the love of God- get some water in that girl,” the blonde instructed.

“Already working on-”

“Cath! Tell my mum I love her!”

Jane could practically hear the writer roll her eyes. “Kat says she loves you.”

“Tell her I know, and I love her too. I’ll be there in ten,” she relayed once again as she turned the doorknob and left the house.

She pulled up ten minutes later, as promised, and the women filed into her car with varying degrees of difficulty. She couldn’t help but chuckle softly when Kat flung herself into the backseat and immediately leaned forward to press a kiss to Jane’s cheek. As she dropped them off at their houses, the blonde received many thanks. Finally, it was just her and her daughter, heading home for the night. Kat slid into the passenger seat with a pleasantly buzzed smile on her face, albeit a sleepy smile.

“Come on, love,” Jane cooed. “Time to get you home and get you to bed.”

“M’kay mum,” the pink haired woman closed her eyes as she curled up as best she could in the seat. The mother couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh at that.

As the blonde got her daughter into bed that night, Katherine fell asleep quickly, but not before telling Jane that she loved her again.

“I love you too,” she replied softly, brushing a few baby hairs off of her daughter’s forehead and pressing a gentle kiss to it. “Get some sleep, sweetheart. I’ll see you in the morning.”

And she did. The older woman slept in just a bit, the late night expedition taking some energy away from her. As she stumbled down the steps, a sweatshirt pulled tightly to her body, she heard Kat coming up behind her.

“Good morning love,” Jane sighed once she was at the bottom of the steps. She felt arms wrap around her immediately. “How are you this morning?”

“Good!” Katherine smiled at her brightly. “I had a really good time last night. How are you?” She kissed Jane’s cheek as she walked past. “Should I start your tea?”

The blonde grinned sleepily. “Please. I’ll start on breakfast.”

They reconvene on the couch a few minutes later, just happy to be in each others’ company.

“Thank you for taking care of the coffee and tea, honey,” Jane planted a kiss on Kat's hairline as she handed her a plate. Kat couldn’t have beamed up at her mother more brightly. After she settled, she leaned over again to kiss her forehead again. That kiss was for the phone call last night, not that the younger woman knew that yet.

“Have I ever told you that I love you?” the younger woman asked softly as she sipped her coffee.

Jane stifled a laugh before casually replying, “Many times. I’ve saved seven of your drunk voicemails.”

Kat’s eyes grew comically wide. “What?!”

“You called me last night eight times to tell me you love me,” Jane bit her lip to keep herself from laughing too hard. “I picked up the first one, but then Cathy told me to just let the other calls go, and she would call if anything happened or when you were all ready to be picked up.”

The pink haired girl’s cheeks were almost as pink as her hair, clearly a bit embarrassed.

“There’s nothing to be embarrassed about, love. It was sweet. You sounded like you had quite the night.” At Kat’s nod, the blonde continued. “And I’m very proud of you for saying no to the man who hit on you at the bar- that last forehead kiss was specifically requested, by you, for your actions.”

“I-” she closed her eyes as her lips formed a tight line. “Oh my god, that’s so embarrassing.”

“Should we listen to them?” Jane’s eyes twinkled. “I do love hearing how much my daughter loves me.”

The daughter groaned. “We don’t need to do that! I can just tell you right-” she was cut off by her own clearly intoxicated voice and her mother’s giggling.

They spend that morning listening to the voicemails, and then playfully arguing over whether Jane should delete the messages or not.

She didn’t.
