Matsushima Island Matsushima is a group of over 200 pine-covered islands, in the Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the historically celebrated "Three Views" of Japan, and home to some spectacular dumplings. #Repost @themetroclassic Japan ran a male-dominated society for the longest time… at least that’s what males thought 😂. There are several historical episodes that cast doubt on the actuality of this idea, but today I’d like to hint at reality through a cute folk tale. Once upon a time, there was a man called Hyōroku who lived with his pretty wife in the countryside. The couple was happy together, but Hyōroku was so much in love with his wife that he would spend all day staring at her and wouldn’t go out in the fields to farm. His wife needed to do something about him, and so she had herself painted and handed the painting to her husband. From that day, Hyōroku would go out and plow his field while looking at his wife’s painting all day. But one morning, a gust of wind took away his beloved painting, and carried it over to the castle. The lord saw the painting, and instantly fell in love. He had his servants look for the model, and they eventually tracked her down. On the day Hyōroku’s wife was to be taken to the castle as a bride, she handed her husband some peach seeds. “Grow these and come sell them at the castle after three years” she said. Hyōroku grew peaches as he was told. The lord was happy about having such a beautiful wife, however was not happy that she had never smiled for three years. But when she heard the voice of a peach seller outside the castle, she rejoiced and gave a beaming smile. The lord was very pleased. So he called the peach seller into the castle and asked to exchange outfits. His beautiful wife smiled so happily seeing the lord dressed like a merchant; he was so happy he danced out of his castle with the outfit on. The guards thought the peach seller had come out, and chased the lord away. Hyōroku and his wife lived at the castle happily ever after. The story is called Esugata Nyōbō. Painting by KABURAKI Kiyokata (1887 - 1972) 黒髪. ▶︎ Check out The Metro-classic Japanese for more on Japan. 3 Dec 2019. Day 8. 「国立競技場」 Our post-Meiji Jingu ramble brought us to the Japan National Stadium. I’d been past it on foot once in 2015; I think they were in the process of rebuilding it then. There were lots of people taking photos and generally getting excited about the new stadium and the role it would be playing in the 2020 Olympics. Unfortunately, we know how that turned out... . . . . . . . #darkroomapp #5minjapan #visitjapanjp #japandailies #explorejpn #come_to_japan #japanawaits #instajapan #myjapan #daily_photo_jpn #japanko_official #tankensurutokyo #tokyocameraclub #japancityblues #kilogrammerz #agameoftones #東京 #新宿 #国立競技場 (at 国立競技場) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHhp4S-nL7M/?igshid=1wm28574vhqi5

Woodblock print by KAWASE Hasui (1883 - 1957) 修繕寺之雨. ▶︎ For more on Japan, link in Bio: @themetroclassi #Repost @themetroclassic Public baths were coed for the longest time in Japan, and it was one of the hardest things for Western visitors to wrap their heads around. The first American diplomat to Japan, Townsend Harris wrote “We were all much pleased with the appearance and manners of the Japanese… they are superior to any people east of the Cape of Good Hope.” Very generous of him to say about 19th century Japan. But on the topic of bathing, he said “Both sexes, old and young, enter the same bathroom and there perform their ablutions in a state of perfect nudity. I cannot account for so indelicate a proceeding on the part of a people so generally correct.“ In short, his initial response to coed baths was “WTF 😂!” English explorer Isabella Bird (who stayed and traveled around Japan for an extended period of 7 months) made an interesting observation. She initially felt very insecure about staying in inns where privacy was non-existent. No room had a lock! But after completing her journey peacefully without getting anything robbed, and seeing men and women at public baths handing towels as they politely bowed naked, she seems to have come to think that there was a sense of order achieved by not putting up barriers between people. It’s incredible she seemed to have correctly deduced that public baths were a symbolic feature of Japan. Japan basically thinks most people to be fundamentally good. Of course crime does happen and there are people who shamelessly take advantage of this unconditional trust, but still now, Japanese society runs largely on that belief. And that is to say, to Japanese people’s eyes, if one commits crime or tricks others even once, that is an unforgivable douchebag 😂! Criminals used to be tattooed a big X right in their face after committing crime, and didn’t get a second chance in life. #bathtime #japanart #japaneseart #painting #woodblockprint #japaneseculture #japanculture #history #japanesehistory #travel #japantravel #journey #timetravel #rainyday #rain #artwork #funfacts #japan #japon #japao #japandaily #metroclas https://www.instagram.com/p/CeyHeazLDkV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
