In a leafy residential neighborhood of Nagoya,  Japan, the Tomoaki Uno agency designed a fortress-like dwelling called ‘Takamine-Cho House.’ The 2-story residence is on a sloped corner site and is flipped upside down, with the bedrooms in the lower level and all the social areas on the upper floor.

There’re a lot of concrete structures, but also wood to warm it up and make it cozy.

The client wanted to create a house using traditional stone masonry, which stumped the architects at first. The architect explains, ‘in the beginning, I thought of it only as a finishing material.”
Tumblr media
It gets lots of natural light, but also complete privacy.

Beautiful kitchen. It’s quite large and there are so many cabinets, but they mimic the look of cement on the walls.

Lovely warm, well-lit hallway with storage, places to hang things, and a shelf for shoes.

This bedroom has a larger, built-in desk area.

Bathrooms with lots of storage options.

This bath has a view of the courtyard water feature from the tub.

The upper level features a private courtyard that brings natural light inside the inverted home, and a tranquil water feature in the corner.

The Neighbor’s House
Small Town Tokyo: Himonya
Owned by a lady who appears to be in her late eighties or older,. Judging by the fates of similar old houses with large gardens in Tokyo, its days are numbered.
