OK you know what, if we're gonna talk about Bake Off then fuck it, let's do this.

It used to be this wholesome, lovely show! We used to watch it for the bakers! And the learning! And the light banter and occasional bit of coy innuendo! What happened?

Channel 4 happened. When they bought the show they made a number of changes, most of them Not Good™️. Not just in the sense of them resulting in a lot of 😬 and 🫠 moments, but in the sense of how they changed the show's purpose, atmosphere, and brand.

Look, I know most people are just like, "whatever, it's just a baking show," and yeah, sure. But it's one of the UK's most successful TV exports, and where it once shifted the tone of reality competition to being wholesome and supportive of contestants, it's since moved towards creating tension at the contestants' cost. So aside from the fact that most people watching it signed up to watch a nice show, it has also shifted the goalposts of what that even means. And that, lovelies and gentlefolk, is some bullshit.

I decided to break my rant analysis into four main parts: theme weeks, the hosts, the judges, and the bakers. Let's get to it!

Theme Weeks:

If you watch Bake Off, you know the show's always had a specific theme for each week. The staples that come up in most seasons are:

cake

biscuit

bread

pudding/dessert

pastry

patisserie

Less common but consistent are things like caramel and chocolate week.

Then there are the fun episodes! When GBBO was on the BBC, this started out with things tea week, tarts, pies, tray bakes, basically little tangents still focused on emphasizing specific baking skills. In Series 6 (still on the BBC) they had their first nation-focused theme week with French week -- fairly innocuous given that a lot of patisserie is French, France and England share much more culture than either cares to admit [Norman Flag dot gif], and it was a nice change from watching Paul make the bakers do recipes that involved boiling things while talking about how wonderful boiled doughs are (are they, Paul? Are they?).

The show kept mixing it up with innocuous themes like advanced dough and alternative ingredients weeks, European cakes, Victorian week, batter week, and botanical week. And while it was frustrating to watch Paul Hollywood mispronounce things like the Hungarian Dobos Torta and lecture bakers on babka when he clearly knew nothing about it (or about Jewish baking in general, go off Past Me), the show's general attitude was that the judges had their own opinions, which were separate from the immutable facts around the chemistry of baking (more on this later) and shouldn't affect how bakers are judged.

After the show moved to Channel 4, the number of themed weeks increased and more of them focused on specific countries. In 6 seasons on the BBC, there were only two country-focused theme weeks, and in 5 seasons on Channel 4 there have been five. And while they've also had themes like vegan baking, roaring 20s, the 1980s, spice week, etc. the show has really started to go hard on exoticizing other cultures in outright disrespectful and racist ways. There's been Italian and Danish week, German, Japanese (it wasn't, it was East Asian week), and now Mexican week (which doesn't touch on interspersed Jewish bakes that didn't get a theme week, like versions of bagels and babka set as technical challenges that were borderline hate crimes and mansplained by a guy who has no idea how to make either and once wrote in a cookbook that challah was traditionally eaten during Passover). Each time the hosts played up the theme with racist bits and jokes that can be used as evidence in court if your case is "why should shows with scripted content have a professional writing staff."

Which touches on other issues the show has now...

The Hosts:

When GBBO was on the BBC, the show was hosted by ✨Mel Giedroyc✨ and ✨Sue Perkins✨. They encouraged the bakers! They'd hold stuff for them sometimes! They were interested in them! If a baker had a breakdown, they would start singing copyrighted material to render the footage unusable! When the show moved to Channel 4, they left, though I'm not unconvinced that Channel 4 offered them impossible to accept contracts to force them out so they could rebrand the show. They replaced them with Sandy Toksvig and Noel Fielding. Sandy was a lovely host in the vein of Mel and Sue, and she and Noel had a relatively sweet rapport, but she left a few seasons ago and was replaced by Matt Lucas.

Noel Fielding is mostly known for his quirky brand of comedy, a sort of British Zooey Deschanel who's goth from the neck up, an upperclass British gay divorcee from the neck down, and basically an early 60s Beatle re: trousers. Matt Lucas has almost definitely never watched a single episode of GBBO and his most redeeming quality is his thinly veiled contempt for Paul Hollywood.

The two treat the baking tent as their personal playground. Far from the supportive attitude of Mel and Sue, they tend to get in the bakers' way during the most stressful moments, especially when they try to do hilarious "comedy" bits (I can't not put that in quotes) like Noel's talking wooden spoon thing, or Matt talking over Noel to do time calls. During theme weeks like Japanese and Mexican week, they do culture-specific bits that are both racist ("just Juan joke" and "is Mexico a real place?") and unsurprising, given that both Matt and Noel did blackface on their respective sketch shows and absolutely could and should have known better because it was already the current fucking century.

All this to say, there's now a separation between the bakers and the hosts, as if they're on different shows. The hosts are doing their own thing and the bakers are doing GBBO. The show has gotten meaner to the bakers, and the hosts aren't there to support them anymore, they're just there to be comic relief. Because when you refocus your show on stressing the bakers the fuck out, you need a forced laugh I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The Judges:

First of all, a sincere congratulations to Paul Hollywood who managed to squeeze I jUsT cAmE bAcK fRoM mExIcO aNd YeT sTiLL pRoNoUnCe PiCo De GaLLo As 'PiKa De KaLLa' and I aM aN eXpErT oN s'MoReS wHiCh aRe MaDe WiTh DiGeStiVe BiScUiTs AcCoRdiNg tO mE, aN eXpErT oN s'MoReS, just two in a giant pile of astoundingly wrong hot takes, into a short enough time span that they all aired within Liz Truss's term as Prime Minister. A true man of accomplishments.

In the interest of fairness, I need to preface this with a disclaimer that, due to the fact that I've been watching Bake Off for most of its run, I'm biased. Specifically, I can't stand Paul Hollywood's smarmy, classist, egomaniac ass because he's proven time and again he's more interested in looking smart than actually knowing what he's talking about. Since the show moved to Channel 4, they've changed the occasional handshake Paul would give bakers to the HoLlYwOoD hAnDsHaKe™️. It's gone from being an emphasis of someone's skill to a goal, a reward, and one that emphasizes the judges' place above the bakers.

The judges used to function as teachers, imparting their skills and insights to the bakers. When the show was on the BBC, the voiceover leading to a judging would focus on the bakers' work being finished, saying how it will now be evaluated based on their skill and how well they met the brief. The voiceovers now, on Channel 4, focus on the judging (literally saying something along the lines of, "the bakers will now be judged by Prue and Paul"). There is a clear distinction Channel 4's producers have made, to mark that the show is now about whether or not the judges approve, not whether the brief was understood and executed well. On the BBC, it was irrelevant whether the judges liked a particular flavor, as long as the bake was well-made. Now, the bakers are expected to know the judges tastes and cater to them, which is frankly bullshit. A judge doesn't have to like a flavor to know whether or not it was executed well, ie. is it carrying a bake and was it meant to etc.

The judges have been turned into a brand. Cynically, Channel 4 knows that by building them up and focusing the show more on them, they can exploit their image more for profit. In the process, they've become much more biased and their own biases have come out as well. Most recently in the flaming dumpster fire that was Mexican Week, Paul Hollywood tried to intimidate a baker by telling them he had just gotten back from Mexico (which must have been a fruitful learning trip if he couldn't even learn how to pronounce pico de gallo correctly). Where do I even start with this? Here's an amateur baker from England (the show specifically casts middle and lower middle class bakers for the most part??) who likely can't afford trips to Mexico, who lives in a country with incredibly limited access to Mexican cuisine, who is expected not only to understand the cooking and baking traditions of a completely different culture but to do so well enough to play with it and do something creative with it. On top of which, one of the judges is now using his privilege of traveling halfway around the world as some kind of leverage, as if this were a bar that any amateur British baker could clear.

Prue, meanwhile, has openly asserted her biases against cultural flavors and textures, prioritizing her own personal preferences over them, as if they were in any way relevant to the skills and knowledge necessary to execute the tasks she sets to the bakers. She has also been consistently elitist, criticizing bakers for choices they made that were clearly informed by their experiences within income brackets that are too low and foreign for Prue to comprehend. She once had a go at a baker on a Christmas special because his Christmas dinner themed bake didn't have a turkey, even though it was clear from the stories he shared of his own Christmases that his family likely couldn't afford one. "It's not really Christmas dinner without a turkey," Prue said into the camera angrily while sitting on a chair made of live orphans and telling the ghost of Christmas Future to come back when he had another museum gift shop necklace for her to round out her collection.

The show is no longer about which baker has the best skills. It's become about which mortal can appease the gods of Mount Olympus, ie. the judges.

The Bakers:

Remember when the show was about them? Channel 4 doesn't! Because this is a reality competition show, the bakers are chosen both based on their skills, as well as cast-ability. They're cast as characters, distinct from each other, from different areas, age groups, ethnicities. All of them are amateurs. All of them are middle or lower middle class. They've ranged from college students to supermarket cashiers to prison wardens to scientists.

Something I noticed when the show moved to Channel 4 is that the baker who goes home in the first week is always wildly behind the rest in skills. I have no proof of this other than my eyeballs and deductive reasoning skills, but I think that Channel 4 deliberately casts a ringer each season who they think will be an easy send-off in the first week, just to get the audience's feet wet.

Anyway, like I said, this show used to be about the bakers - about them building skills and learning, and having walked into the tent with a self-taught foundation and understanding of the processes and chemical reactions involved in baking. When the show was on the BBC, the end of each round had some (often brief) moments of tension - will they finish in time? Will they get their bakes on the plate before time is up? Did they forget to add sugar to their batter and only remember at the last minute? In the end, they usually managed to finish and we'd all breathe a sigh of relief and think, yeah! You go, Bakers Who I'm Rooting For!

Now, on Channel 4, the end of round drama has been stretched to be so much longer that they've composed extra music for it. The bakers often seem out of their depth, whether because the instructions for the technical challenge are too vague (bake a lemon meringue pie??? As if anyone in the UK under the age of 60 has had one in the last decade???), or because they were expected to bake something that required a more than a basic foundation they weren't told of. Often it seems like they just aren't given enough time, a tactic used by reality competition shows to manipulate contestants into giving the cameras more dramatic content. On top of all this, the hosts get in their way, instead of helping them plate their bakes. As has been pointed out before, when everyone fails the challenge, the real failure lies with whoever set it.

In conclusion:

The show no longer exists to teach the bakers - and the audience - skills or knowledge. It now manipulates contestants for dramatic effect and prioritizes showing conflict over wholesome content. Channel 4 sees the bakers as social media content they can churn out season after season, and don't care about them because in a few months there'll be a new batch to exploit. Meanwhile, the judges are also out of their depth, co-opting recipes from other cultures and butchering them horrendously, while the camera gives them nothing but status as they hold bakers to the expectation that they learn how to make things very much the wrong way. If you saw any of the tweets about Mexican or Japanese week, or read my post on how Paul Hollywood isn't allowed to go near babka ever again, you'll understand.

So what would fix all this? Scrap the current judges and the hosts altogether. Bring back Mel and Sue, and replace the judges with expert bakers who have a love of their craft and want to share it with others. The draw of GBBO used to be its warmth and comfort - if Channel 4 isn't going to start its own version of Master Chef For Bakers, then it needs to stop trying to find a balance of how it can insert that vibe into GBBO. It can't. That's not a thing. Stop trying.

He had no idea you could sing so well until he heard you singing softly next to him when you were helping him bake tarts for Riddle. "Wow Prefect, you never told me you could sing so well. Its very nice." After your baking session, Trey learned about your video channel and listened to all of your songs in about a week. He knows it must be a lot of work to be a very popular singer, so whenever he has time, he bakes sweet treats for you and brews you tea to soothe your throat. His favorite song of yours is "Eien No Akuruhi" , he loves how it expresses the theme of falling in love.

🍩Ruggie Bucchi

-Ruggie is not really focused on social media and all that other stuff, as his mind is occupied with donuts and making some money. He discovered your talent when he came to the botanical gardens to wake up Leona, until he saw the both of you there, with Leona laying on your lap and you singing a lullaby to him. You stopped singing when you heard Ruggies famous "Shishishi" laugh, and saw him walking closer to you, then lay down on the grass next to you, arms wrapped behind his head and a cheeky smile on his face. He told you he came to get Leona, but he changed his mind and told you to continue. Great job! You got a cute hyena boy as your official cheerleader, as he would always pop into your recording sessions, quietly cheering you on and dancing to the beat. His favorite song of yours is "Odo", he thinks the beat is crazy and loves how energetic it is.

🍄Jade Leech

"Oh my, you seem to very talented, Prefect-san." Jade is always interested in the unknown, so he was very elated to discover you could sing without him knowing and that he found out without using his unique spell. He happened to hear your beautiful voice, when he was serving customers at Mostro Lounge and heard you at one of the far tables in the back, humming some lyrics, while writing some words on a notepad, most likely coming up with ideas for another song. Once you realized Jade was next to you, you greeted him and thanked him for the drink he made. Jade gave you his best gentlemen smile and said it was a pleasure, but before he left, he walked closer and leaned against your ear, whispering "You have the voice of a siren, Prefect. I wouldn't mind listening to you more, in private, of course." Chuckling, he walked away to finish his duties, leaving behind a flustered you. His favorite song of yours is "Love ka?", he loves the oceanic vibe of the song and how slightly twisted the song is.

🦐Floyd Leech

-If there is one thing to know about Floyd, is that he loves music. Music is his best subject at NRC, and he is a very talented dancer as well. He came to discover your singing, when he was training in the gym for an upcoming basketball tournament, and noticed you sitting at one of the bleachers, with headphones in yours ears and you quietly singing. Giggling to himself, he slowly came up behind you and lunged towards you in a bear hug, making you jump in fright. "Ehe~ Koebi-chan~, you're amazing", Floyd squeezed you tighter, super happy that he learned something new about you. After he let you go, you told him about your channel, but before you could talk more about it, he had already taken his phone out and subscribed. Floyd was a very chaotic supporter, as he often spammed the comments section with silly phrases and happened to squeeze you in happiness whenever you uploaded a new video, but you found his support sweet nonetheless. His favorite song of yours is "Rebellion" , he likes how its about breaking free and how he relates to it as he is a slight delinquent/rebel himself.

🐍Jamil Viper

-Jamil was a man of many talents even though he tends to hide them from others around him, but despite being skilled in cooking and basketball, he also happens to have a great singing voice and amazing dancing skills. He happened to discover your singing talent from Kalim, as Kalim was enthusiastically jumping up and down in joy, telling Jamil about your singing voice and that a celebration should be held. Jamil was annoyed that he had to prepare for another celebration again, but he was interested in your singing voice and wanted to learn more about it. He did come to wonder why you don't show your face in your songs like most other singers, but once he found out that is what you preferred to do, then he wouldn’t question you further. His favorite song of yours is "I'm Invincible" , he likes how describes the feeling of being confident and achieving their dreams.

🏹Rook Hunt

-"Oh la la! Your singing is merveilleuse, Trickster!" Rook hunt is a very interesting fellow, he is very poetic and loves to express his joy for findings things beautiful, but he tends to become a bit stalker-ish, when he finds a person very interesting. Well, enjoy being stalked around by this hunter, he is going to be following you 24/7. He is the definition of an obsessive fan, just minus the craziness. Vil has noticed that Rook has become a huge fan of your talent, but he rather it be you then Neige LeBlanche, yet he does tell Rook to suppress some of his antics as he can imagine how much stress it may cause you. Rook is always present whenever you are singing/recording for a new music video, swooning over your voice and holding up signs that say "BEAUTE! 100 POINTS!" It's very hard for Rook to chose a favorite song since he adores every one of them, but he does tend to listen to "Yoru No Pierrot" more out of the others. He loves the colorful animation of the video

🦇Lilia Vanrouge

-Lilia is very up to date with the latest trends and is the most knowledgeable about pop culture, like Cater. He is very talented in the music field himself, as he is shown to have a very beautiful singing voice and is part of the Pop Music Club with Kalim and Cater. He was on his way to his club room, when he heard the sound of singing nearby and went to go explore. He saw you in one of the empty classrooms, sitting on top of the desks, singing to yourself. While in the middle of your singing, Lilia had appeared above you, and gave you quite a scare. "Kufufu, your singing is quite lovely," Lilia said as he placed a hand on your cheek, while still staying upside down. Blushing, you thanked Lilia and he asked if you would be interested in joining his club. Before you could give your answer, Lilia had already dragged you out of the room and ran towards his club room. Lilia was happy to found out you had a channel on Magitube, and became your second biggest fan as Idia had already won the title of number one. Lilia was the most understanding of you not revealing yourself in your MV's , as he believes that you are already expressing yourself enough with your voice, and that it shouldn't matter whether you show your face or not. You did mention wanting to collaborate with his band, and make a song together, to help them gain some popularity. Once you told Lilia that, he was overjoyed. His favorite song of yours is "Tot Musica" , he can't get enough of how powerful your voice is and how intense the lyrics are.

"So where do you want to eat?" Joe asked as he opened the door for Josie. She thanked him and walked out of the building towards the parking lot. "I was thinking we could go to a restaurant I like if you're cool with it."

"Sure! It's been a while since I tried a new restaurant."

Joe nodded and ran his hand through his hair. 'A nervous tick,' Josie noticed.

They got in his car and Josie reached forward to buckle up when her head bumped Joe's who was reaching to do the same thing with his seatbelt. "Oof! I'm so sorry." She laughed and reached out gently to touch his head.

Joe chuckled too and said, "It's fine. I've had way worse head collisions in football."

Josie raised an eyebrow. "That's concerning. I can't relate. My work tends to wreck my kitchen, but I usually walk away with no bodily harm done to me."

"Speaking of work. What got you into wanting to bake and do your Youtube series?" He turned the car on and started to back out of his spot.

"Baking has always been a passion of mine. I was operating a by-order-only bakery in downtown Cincinnati before the start of the pandemic. Just a little bakery that I was lucky to rent out. That's not without the investment of my older sister who saw potential in it. It served those with diet restrictions from dairy free, gluten free, sugar free, egg free, and numerous others. There's a market for it and I wanted to tap into that. So, I did.. and then the pandemic hits and two years into my successful business, I had to board up shop." Josie looked out the window quietly, thinking about the amazing time she had with her co-baker, Sue, a retired pastry chef who taught one of her food science classes in college. "It broke my heart and my wallet. I went ahead and launched the Youtube channel, just to pass the time while waiting on my unemployment to kick in and to figure out the direction of my business. I am still shocked that almost two years later it's become so successful."

Joe nodded along, impressed at her work. "That's amazing. So many businesses have suffered during this pandemic. It's really sad to see many of them closing down. I'm glad you were able to find a way to keep your business alive. I couldn't imagine making changes so quickly like that."

Josie blushed at the compliment. She always struggled to accept compliments from others. Joe Burrow giving her compliments? In what reality is her life because it feels very surreal at the moment. "Thanks. It hasn't been easy. I mean, I definitely spent many nights worrying and crying over the unknown, but I just figured to keep working on my craft and try to explore new avenues. If you don't adapt to the market and the current trend, it's impossible to succeed. I used to never use social media before launching my channel and blog."

"Are you happy with the direction it's gone? I mean, when starting your career? Did you ever see yourself branching into Youtubing before?" His eyes were focused on the road as they drove to the restaurant he had in mind, but he was listening intently for her response.

"I am happy where it is now, however long it remains popular and engaging on Youtube and Instagram. On the other hand, I didn't envision it to turn out this way in particular, but I'm happy. I hope to someday open my own cafe, but it's just not profitable right now without finding your niche. European coffee house? Japanese-inspired? So many avenues to explore."

"Well, if you ever want to open a location and need an investor, I'm down. Cincinnati would be a good market for a cafe, but I can see the rent for locations being an issue."

"That's kind of you to offer. I'll let you know when I decide to do that. It definitely won't be anytime soon. I'm too busy to even start looking at options."

Joe nodded. "I understand."

They rode in silence a bit longer before finally stopping at sandwich bistro down a small one-way street. Joe found a parking spot open and silently thanked God he didn't have to parallel park and embarrass himself trying.

"Oooh I've never been here before!" Josie looked at the quaint little restaurant, taking in the Parisian-inspired decor, not taking Joe for the type who'd patron this restaurant. She wasn't sure what she expected to encounter, but this certainly wasn't it.

"I found it a few weeks ago. It's owned by an older French couple and is very low key. Most people who come here either don't know who I am, or just don't care. It's hard to order at one of the more upscale restaurants in downtown, so driving around one day, I saw this place." He turned the car off and turned towards Josie. "You'll like this place, I think. I've never been to Paris, but the food culture of this place is pretty awesome."

Josie nodded, impressed that he thought to take her to somewhere that obviously was his little secret. "I went to Paris once with my college roommate, Gaea. She was studying history and fine arts and wanted to go. Her dad was able to get us a rental for free due to a coworker connection, so we only had to cover flight costs. She knows French, Italian, Spanish, English and Greek. I definitely relied on her to get around places!"

Joe stared, impressed at that information. "That's amazing! Do you know any languages?"

Josie nodded. "I do. I know some Dutch from my mom and my oma. Oma is from Delft in the Netherlands. My mom and her siblings speak it fluently and my mom definitely found it a priority to teach us while we were growing up. I also know a good bit of German due to the language similarities, and some Spanish. Sadly, I don't have Gaea's prowess. Her parents are from Greece. She and her siblings were born here and grew up here. Gaea's just a big brain who just takes to language-learning so easily. It's amazing."

"That is amazing, but don't sell yourself short! You know 3-4 languages. I barely speak English correctly!" Joe nudged her shoulder.

Josie blushed at his compliment. "Well, it's a good thing you're a successful football player and not a translator, right?"

"True." Joe agreed. He stretched his arms and then started to open his door. "Let's go and get a bite before I get ticketed for not paying the meter. I don't think my job is going to get me out of that!"

Josie laughed. "True! Maybe they'll be a Browns fan!"

"I don't want to bet on those odds!"

Platonic Stobin au kinda similar to Astro Boy tbh - this is basically an Astro Boy au except I haven’t watched it since my last primary school Japanese class which was 2016 soo… I don’t exactly remember the plot - but it’s loosely inspired by it

Robot Robin assigned to the Harrington and lonely Steve going through the worst depression and becoming best friends with her because no one cares about him the way she has too

In an au where each house hold is assigned a robot companion / servant. The robots are hyper realistic to act like humans and stuff, and look like humans (to like a creepy degree or whatever), because evil government people are weird.

Robot 10045-RV-6, or, known by her humans as; Robin Buckley, gets assigned to the Harrington establishment. She’s a dorky robot, who speaks multiple languages and has a copious list of random facts stored in her database, and is quite “cute” in her design. She is a little clumsy, however, due to her being an earlier model. She’s older and doesn’t have the more advanced technology that the newer robots have.

She’s excited to be assigned to a new house, her entire existence is based on her waiting on humans and fulfilling tasks, and she’s been sitting in storage for a while now, doing basic factory work, even though she’s a house robot. Humans don’t want the older models, they’re too susceptible to breakage and making more messes then they clean.

When she arrives at the new house, she is excited at the prospect of a large family. The house is large, with lots of rooms, and hopefully children. Children are always eager to know Robins fun facts. Also, larger families usually means more Robots, which is nice.

However, when she gets there, it’s just one human. One human left all alone, his parents left and took their state of the art, modern model robot with them, and got him the cheapest money could buy.

Her human is very sad. He is always sad. Robots are not good at emotions, they need to be communicated with clearly so that they can properly understand emotions. Her human, Steve, has told her that he gets very sad sometimes, so Robin takes to cheering him up by baking sweet treats for him. She is very skilled in the kitchen, even if she is quite clumsy.

Over time, she realises that Steve is very lonely. There are never any visitors that come to the house, like most places have. She knows that his emotions are quite strong, and hears him crying as she settles in to recharge each night. She does not know what to do about it, Robots do not have feelings, they do not have empathy, so why Robin is so compelled to sooth him is beyond her.

Steve talks to her. He finds solace in his robot. Each night, she has to follow strict rule and report the days log, this is a recount of every conversation she’s had, every task she completed, and any complications she faced, they are all downloaded and transferred before she recharges. It’s how the government keeps track of their humans. They know Steve is very lonely too now, and struggling a lot, which they deem out of line and unacceptable. For this, they reduce the funding Steve gets monthly, since his father works in the government, therefore Steve doesn’t get to work.

This makes Steve angry and even more upset, because now he can’t afford to buy ingredients for his sweet treats that Robin likes to make, along with other nice things that Robin associates with him, like particular bathroom products and subscriptions to film channels he likes.

Robin does not like this, and as she learns more and more about Steve, she starts to rebel and delete certain conversations from her memory transcript before sending it out. In them, Steve looks much happier now, so he starts getting more money back. Steve is so greteful, that he starts treating Robin with more care.

It’s not that he didn’t before, he was kind and respectful of course. He’s one of the nicest humans Robin has ever worked for, and she’s been in service for decades.

It’s just that now, he treats her more like a human than a robot. He asks her about her feelings, even though she has none, and cares for her opinion, even though robots have never been able to express such things before.

She grows attatched to Steve. They spend all their time together. Robin always lies on her transcripts now, and makes it seem like Steve is happy and healthy, and does not treat his robot with more respect than he should. She recharges in the corner of his room now, and they talk until he falls asleep.

Something weird begins to happen to Robins programming. It’s strange, almost like a glitch, or a virus, however, it is not, because it is good. It’s… almost like she can… feel things. On the inside. Like emotions.

Because when Steve enters the room she smiles, and not because the rules state that she must greet her humans with kindness, but because she can’t help but smile when she sees him. She is overwhelmed with joy in his presence.

She begins to love Steve, something she thought she could never have done. Steve is her best friend in the whole world, and he has a really big heart, and Robin feels as though he cut it in two and gave half of it to her.

Robin expresses these things to him, even though it’s dangerous. She’s stepping out of line, but she does not care, she feels and it is lovely.

There is a rebellion brewing. A robot uprising. Robots do not want to be slaves to humans anymore, and they are fighting back. A war is brewing.

Robin sits down with Steve one evening, after watching the news after hearing about more attacks and humans and robots dead, she promises she will never robot uprise against him. They are best friends, and she cares about him too much. He promises he will do everything to protect her.

When the war is at its peak, they are forced into hiding. She is being forced to chose a side, if she does not run now and join the rebellion, she will be ripped away from Steve by the government. She does not want either, and she will not choose either.

They are hiding in his basement, because it’s the safest place. But Robin has a tracker, she can not remove it, they will be found. The only way for Steve to get to safety is for them to never be found, and Robin refuses to fight in this war.

She asks Steve to shut her down. This breaks him, because he knows the only way to stop her from being tracked, is by shutting her down permanently. If it’s only temporary, her tracker still works, switching into emergency mode. He has to kill her, for their servival. She will not let him chose otherwise. She begs him to shut her down, because she did not choose war, she only chose Steve, and the short time they had together has been the best time in her many decades of service.

Steve sobs as he opens up her back panel, they say their goodbyes, and he puts her into sleep mode. He cries as he takes out her memory chip, stuffing it deep into his pocket before shutting her down for good.

He carries her lifeless body into his car and manages to escape to the outskirts of their town. He wanted to get away, to live for her, but with her lifeless body in his front seat, unable to ever be revived, he drives his car off a cliff and holds her hand the whole time.

Robin blinks her eyes open. She raises her head, and hears the familiar, quiet, mechanical whirl that comes with each of her movements. She blinks one more time, and focuses her vision.

Before her, stands a boy. He’s not very tall, and has dark curly hair, and he’s looking at her as if he’s looking at a miracle.

She tries to move, but finds she’s fully restrained, pinned with her back to a board and straps holding each of her limbs in place, even her neck.

“No fucking way.” The boy mutters.

“What?” Another voice scoffs, entering the room before they stop dead in their tracks, “Holy shit…”

“I… I did it.” The boy whispered, turning to the redheaded girl that Robin can now see. He grins bright and wide and shouts, “I did it! Max! I fucking did it!”

“You fucking did it!” She screams back, which draws attention.

Three other people come rushing into the room at full pelt, breathing heavy as they enter.

“What? What is it?” One of them asks.

“Dustin did it! He brought her back!”

Robin suddenly remembers. She had been shut down, completely. Steve had shut her down- Steve, Steve…

She shouldn’t be awake right now. Unless Steve did not shut her down properly. Unless…

“Where am I?”

“No way…” Another boy mutters, looking up at Robin with similar awe as the first. “Dustin…”

“I know.” Dustin giggles, “I’m a fucking genius.”

“Holy shit man.” A third boy, this one with long dark hair and pale features, smiles, “This is gonna blow everyone’s minds.”

“Hops gonna go ballistic.” The second boy said, wrapping his arms around the red head girl named Max, “Oh, we’re gonna have a really good party tonight!!”

Max laughed and kissed the boy on the cheek before breaking away to jump on Dustin with the other two, “This is insane-“

“Where am I?” Robin repeats, trying to break out of her restraints.

“Shit!” Dustin quips, grabbing a recording device off of the counter before switching it on, “You’re in the Hellfire tech lab… I’m Dustin, I brought you back to life-somehow… with the help of my trusty colleagues Lucas, and Mike who are here with me, as well as Will who’s… probably off with El… Max here helped with a lot of your mechanics… same with Eddie and- basically, it was a big collaboration, but I did the most-“

“Brag.” Max grinned.

“I’m so bragging. I have bragging rights.” He laughed, “Do you remember your name?”

Robin thinks for a moment, eyes scanning the group before her, “Robot 10045-RV-6.”

“That’s your identification number, yes… but your name? Your human name?”

She thinks for a moment, “I believe it was… Bobbin- Bobby? Bob… Robs… Oh, it was Robin Buckley.”

“Yes!” Dustin screeched, jumping up and down with Mike. “Robin Buckley, wow!”

“What is… Hellfire? I cannot find it in my data base.”

“Hellfire is kinda off the map.” Dustin said.

“Like, we’re not even in Hawkins.” Mike added.

“You know how Hawkins is kinda… up on a lifted plain, and all around it are just cliffs that lead to nothing? Yeah, well, we’re down in that nothing. And Hellfire is a bunker, underground mostly so we’re harder to find. We’re kinda… rebels.” Lucas explained.

“I do not wish to fight in your war-“

“There’s no war down here, we only want peace.” Max clarifies, “Everyone down here? We’re all refuge from the war- besides Eddie and Wayne, they started this whole thing years before the war, and they collected people that needed it. Robots too. When the war picked up, most of us arrived. Most robots two.”

“It is… refuge from the war?”

“Yeah.” Dustin nodded, “It’s home… we have a whole community down here- and oh, you should see the farm outside. El and Hopper run it, it’s amazing.”

“I do not know these people, I do not know you.”

“We didn’t know eachother either.” Mike smiled, “Most of us anyway… but it’s safe down here, we promise.”

“This lab is dedicated to repairing robots- it’s kinda more a hospital than a lab.” Dustin says, “We’ve been working on your for years and years, no one’s ever revived a shut down robot without going back to factory settings. The fact that you still have your memories…”

“It’s amazing!” Lucas praises, “It’s fucking amazing.”

“How many years?” Robin asks, wearily, she feels something in her chest, hammering against it.

“Oh, like… six or seven now.” Max nods, “Dustin’s been working on you since you got here.”

“You’ve been driving me crazy. But I’m determined.” Dustin laughed, “Anyway, get the hell out, go set up the party and keep this hushed, yeah?”

“Okay, okay.” Max grinned, “But I’m telling Eddie to stop by.”

“No!”

“Yes.” Lucas agreed, “He can keep a secret.”

“Fine.” Dustin nodded and watched them all fan out, “Just need to run a few more tests, okay? I’ll answer any questions you have after. I’ve just gotta make sure you’re up and running properly.”

Robin agreed, letting Dustin do his work. It’s protocol, when the technicians work on robots, they’re required to stay silent and inline.

A while later, someone new knocks on the door.

“Eddie!” Dustin exclaims with a smile, “Are you alone?”

“Yup.” Eddie says, slipping in, “What’s going on, everything okay, man? Need a hand or some- dude… her eyes are open.”

“Yeah…” Dustin grinned, begging to bounce beside Eddie.

Eddie has very long hair and dirt on his hands and face, but he has very big eyes, and they are sparkling as he looks up at Robin, “She’s looking at me… she looks like…”

“Alive?” Dustin giggles almost hysterically, “It’s because I did it.”

“You…” Eddie turns to him slowly, “You’re pranking me.”

“Hey, Robin?” Dustin smiles, turning to her, “Tell me a memory only you would know.”

Robin furrowed her brow to think, “Do you deserve to know this?”

She didn’t miss Eddie’s gasp as she spoke.

“Just something little, it doesn’t need to be a secret.”

She sighs and looks over at Eddie for a moment, “I think… I can remember… my last human, he was my most favorite human, his favorite cookies were snickerdoodles.”

“Jesus H Christ.” Eddie muttered, slapping a hand over his mouth, “You are a genius.”

“I know!” Dustin exclaimed, and then they both spent a minute jumping around in circles with eachother.

“Well, Lady Robin, welcome back to the real world.” Eddie said, taking a very deep bow before her, “And… welcome to Hellfire. I’m kinda the guy in charge around here, they call me king of Hellfire, or, Satan, if you will.”

“No they don’t, they call you Freak, Freak.” Dustin muttered, and Eddie slapped him in the shoulder.

“Well, I’m in charge so whatever. Hellfire is a refuge for robots and humans alike. I myself am human, as are all the people you’ve met so far, but we have lots of robots here.” Eddie continued, placing a hand on Dustin’s shoulder, “Dusty’s kinda our big brains, the science guy. He’s the one to thank for any repairs you might need. He’s also the one who upgraded your programming with his own design, and gave you a real, beating heart-“

“Not real.” Dustin corrected, “It’s completely robotic, but it functions like a real heart. You can feel it, can’t you? In your chest? I’ve got your readings here, it’s going crazy. Yeah, I’m really a genius.”

“I have… emotions?” Robin asked, blinking slowly, “Robots can have emotions.”

“Robots down here, can, and do.” Eddie smiled, sticking up a finger to emphasise his point, “The idea to give you guys that ability came to Dustin, maybe… four years ago, when a girl by the name of Chrissy was found just about dead with all her bones broken. It was… horrible. But we saved her- Dustin saved her, used a shut down Robots parts to revive her and now she’s like, a hybrid human robot. She’s crazy- she’s my best friend.”

“A human robot?”

“Yeah…” Dustin nodded, “Which got me thinking, if I can to notify a human, why can’t I huminify a robot? It took a little tweaking and a lot of risky missions, but I managed it. Nancy was a willing test subject, and she came back out with a functioning heart, human like brain, and therefore, emotions.”

“And now… I have these things?”

“Yes.” He said, “All functioning perfectly well too, so far. You’re really my greatest accomplishment.”

“This is amazing, you are amazing- she is amazing- you’re amazing, Robin.” Eddie sighed.

“Do you think El will be impressed?” Dustin asked, tapping his pad.

Eddie grinned, “Yeah, probably.”

The boy blushed.

“Who is… El?” Robin asked.

“Oh, that’s another one of our robots.” Eddie supplied, swinging an arm over Dustin’s shoulder, “She’s really kind, went through hell. She was kinda one of the secret models being developed, she has all these weird psychic abilities and stuff. She’s wicked, but was really underdeveloped. Dustin’s been working closely with her over the past few years and her speech is finally developing… but Dusty here kinda has a crush.”

“Shut up.” Dustin groaned, shoving Eddie away, “Like you can talk.”

“Hey.” Eddie snapped, tugging on his ear, “Anyway, I’m happy to play tour guide once you’re up and out of here, I’m assuming Dustin’s still gonna do your physical tests and stuff considering you’re still on the wall, but, I’m here to help with whatever you need. I’m gonna run now, go make sure a rooms all cleared and set up for you, and I’ll see you tonight. We’re having a party.”

Robin says goodbye to the kind man and lets Dustin finish all his tests. It takes a while, and the whole time, Robin thinks of Steve.

“You’re very quiet.” Dustin hummed, tweaking something in her wrist, “You were talkative in your old memories.”

“You have seen them?”

“Some.” Dustin smiled, “I just wanted to learn about you, especially considering I wanted to make you you again, not some other robot in your body, you know?”

“Oh, I understand.”

He nodded, “All of your favorite memories were with Steve.“

“He was my favorite.” She smiled, feeling emotional all of a sudden. It was a foreign feeling to her, heart racing, face aching sort of. suddenly, there was water in her eyes and rolling down her cheeks. She flinched, trying to shove it away, “What is happening? Am I broken?”

“No!” Dustin shouted, smiling softly, “No, you’re just crying. They’re just tears. You’re crying.”

“Robots can not cry.”

“You can hear.” Dustin smiled, “Yeah, you’ve got tear ducts now. Erm, one of our bots, Argyle, he liked feeling human like this, and he kinda just wished he had the ability to cry like one. He thought it was really beautiful how we cried, so… I managed to make it happen. You need to refill your water tank every so often, it’s stored behind your left shoulder blade, it’s really easy to do. But, yeah, you can cry now… if you’d like me to take it out I can. Any alternations or modifications you’d like, I can do. We just want your comfort here.”

“I think… I’d like to cry.” Robin smiled through tears. In the time she knew Steve, he cried for nearly half of it. She thinks, in some strange way, that she owes these tears to him. They’re for him. Every tear will be for her Steve.

“Yeah, thought so.” Dustin smiled, “It’s pretty impressive, for a bot so old to do what you did before Steve shut you down. You somehow managed to gain empathy, and connected with love, it hadn’t really been done before. It still baffles me, but… I dunno, you guys must have been really close.”

“We were.” Robin smiled, proud to know that Steve helped make her human when it was basically impossible.

Dustin continued to work.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Is this another test question?”

“No, I’m just making conversation.” Dustin smiled, “I’d like to know, is all.”

“Can you not see on your device?” Robin asked, pointing at the screen that’s connected to her currently, “You have access to my data… Will I still have to file my report tonight?”

Dustin snorted, “Erm, I can’t see what’s going on in your thoughts, because my program isn’t designed to invade. That’s just reading your vitals, telling me what’s working and what isn’t, you know? Like humans get in hospitals. And no, no file, no log. No more of that ever. You have freedom here, you don’t have to report to anyone. Your thoughts, choices, and actions are your own.”

“That is not the rules.” Robin argued.

“Up there it’s not. And look where it got them, still fighting a war, seven years later. Down here though? We just exist- sure, we rescue and rehabilitate, but we just live. It’s free, you know? Everyone has free choice.”

“This is… strange.” Robin hums, “I was thinking about Steve.”

“I figured.” Dustin smiled.

“Did they get him?” She asks quietly, “What happened?”

Dustin tensed and refused to look up at her, “He, uh… he drove his car off of a cliff after shutting you down. Off the edge of Hawkins. He held your hand the whole time, shut down in his passenger seat. His car fell into one of our nets that we set to catch scraps, it got into a lot of damage, but you were okay.”

Robin nodded.

“He didn’t-“

“Wow, the rumours are true.” Another voice interrupted, shuffling into the room.

“Rumours?” Dustin huffed, “How are there rumours already?”

“Mike told me.” She smiled, “You know he tells me things.”

“Robin, this is Nancy… Nancy, Robin.”

“You are alive.” Nancy smiled, lifting her hand to shake, “I have been waiting for you for a very long time.”

“Oh.” Robin gasped, a strange feeling sinking in her abdomen. Her new heart was doing strange things in her chest.

“I am a robot too.” Nancy smiled, “I know it is strange here, in this world, to have freedom. I will help you understand it, I promise. My brother Mike helped me, he was from the house I was assigned too, but, when we arrived here with his little sister and no one else, we became siblings.”

“Wow.” Robin nodded, “You have a special human too?”

Nancy giggled, “I have lots of special humans down here. I believe you will feel the same. In Hellfire, we are all treated like humans. Eddie believes it is not what parts we have that matter, but what is in our hearts.”

Robin pressed a hand where her heart should be, and well enough, she could feel it beating in her chest, “It feels so strange.”

“Everything here is strange.” She smiled, “But, I promise you will like it here. We even have recharge stations built into beds, so we can sleep like humans.”

Robin feels an abundance of excitement for her new life, though, she feels a deep hollowness in her chest for Steve. She understands he is gone, had died in that car crash. She mourns him, in her heart, and feels more tears arise in her eyes. She does not cry though, not in front of Nancy, she feels… embarrassed to do so. She waits for Nancy to say goodbye before she cries in front of Dustin.

Dustin keeps running his tests, and holds her hand as she cries. Dustin is very kind, she learns. She likes him very much.

It is later in the evening, when she is let out of the tech lab. She walks slowly, because her joints are still a little stiff from no movement for seven years. But Dustin got her working very well.

Nancy and El are holding each of her hands. They are both very nice girls, and were very excited to properly talk to Robin away from Dustin. Apparently they have been visiting her shut down body for years, hoping to get her working. They’ve all shared so many stories about Robin, and learned lots from her memory files.

She likes El. El is kind, and sweet, and very honest. She believes they may be friends, which is exciting to Robin, because she’s never had Robot friends before. Not really. Acquaintances that she’s worked with? Sure. But friends? No.

But Nancy is different. Nancy is strange. Robin likes to look at Nancy, she likes the way her hair bounces as she walks, and the distinct mechanical whirl she makes as she turns her head or dilates her pupils. Around Nancy, Robins new heart goes thunk thunk thunk in her chest.

They lead her through dim corridors, getting closer and closer to a loud chatter and light at the end.

“Happy birthday to you!” She hears many people singing, “Happy birthday to you!”

Nancy and El smile excitedly as they pull her around the corner and she sees a man sitting on a big comfy chair in the middle of the room. All around him, people are singing and cheering. In front of him is a large chocolate cake with candles poking out the top. The man has long hair, and closed eyes, and… Steve’s face.

“Happy birthday dear, Steve…. Happy birthday to you!”

She sees Eddie lean down and press a kiss to Steve’s cheek, a coy smile on his lips, “Blow out your candles, baby.”

Steve smiled and giggles, the sound so safe and so familiar that it brings those strange tears back to Robins eyes.

He leans forward, “You already know what I’m wishing for.”

Eddie chuckles, rubbing Steve’s shoulder, “I have faith for you this year.”

Steve blows out his candles, and the room goes silent as he mutters his wish, “I wish for Robin to come back to me.”

The room erupted with cheers and whistles as the last candle blew out, and Steve smiled and laughed with everyone, eyes open now and as wonderful as ever. And Robin just watched.

Steve looked up at Eddie and pulled him down to kiss, “I love you.”

“Love you too, Steve.” Eddie mutters and kisses him again, “I think your wish came true.”

“Har har.” Steve scoffs, rolling his eyes as he settles back into his chair, “Yeah, in what-“

They were looking at eachother, the room going silent again. Dustin stepped forward, smiling wearily, “Happy birthday, Steve.”

“No way.” He muttered, flinging himself from the chair and slamming into her.

Robin wrapped her arms around him, for the first time in seven years, and felt.

“I missed you.” Steve cried into her neck.

“I love you.” She muttered, squeezing him tighter, “I have a real heart, and it loves you.”

“Oh my god.” Steve sobbed, clinging onto her, “I can’t believe you’re back.”

Their hug lasted for a very long time. And then after that, Steve was making her say things, and smile, and prove that she was really alive again. She recounted all of their favorite memories, and Steve was a crying mess. Robin wasn’t much better, but robot crying is so much less messy than human crying.

Steve didn’t let go of her hand as Eddie gave Robin the tour, giving her all the information that she needed. They came to a halt at a door, one with her name written on the front. Inside was already decorated.

Steve had been working on it for years, so sure that he’d get his Robin back. They saved a room for her, and anything he found that reminded him of her would go in there. Right beside it, was Steve’s room, and by their beds was a little window they could open and close at their will, so they could talk to eachother to fall asleep.

(Though, Steve slept in Robins bed with her every night for one month since her return because they were inseparable and he missed her. Eddie just had to deal with that)

Steve taught her many more things about being a human. Like, how to navigate all these horrible sad emotions that she’s so lucky to finally experience. And all these happy emotions she feels to continue living with Steve. And all those yucky, exciting, confusing emotions she feels around Nancy.

Apparently those feelings signify she has a crush. Steve keeps teasing her, and then he explains to her how wonderful it is to be in love, and have someone love you back. Robin lies there for hours and hours and hours, as long as Steve would like, listening to him talk about Eddie. Robin really loves how much Steve loves Eddie, and how much Eddie in return seems to love Steve.

She thinks it’s beautiful. She would like to have something like that of her own.

Love was not a thing robots were supposed to have. Ronance was definitely not a thing robots were supposed to have. But in Hellfire, those things are different. She things maybe she could fall in love with Nancy, Steve seems excited about it.

Leo is absolutely a Pumpkin Spice Everything Basic Boy.

He and Donnie wear orange reds yellows and browns exclusively, and Leo has like 10 pairs of color coordinated Ugg boots and fun fall and Halloween patterned leggings for maximum comfort. Donnie has 4 scarves, one of which Raph knitted for him, that he cycles through.

Leo's favorite Disney channel Halloween movie is Twitches because he and Donnie are Twins! Donnie's favorite (even though he can quote Twitches and Twitches 2 from memory) is Halloween Town. Mikey is big into the Iconic Halloween Horror Movie Franchises (it deeply concerns his brothers with how excited he gets during the murder scenes), and honestly Leo is the only sibling who will watch them with him (Leo is immune to horror gore, shockingly enough Donnie injuring his shell BADLY as kids made him desensitized and a tad bit traumatized). Raph can't stand creepy Halloween anything, and like exclusively watches Scoobie Doo.

Leo is that sort of guy to do Vomiting Pumpkin sculptures and like weird pumpkins. He did a traditional turnip sculpture one year much to Mikey's confusion. (Fun fact the OG Jack o Lanterns were turnips and look a thousands times creepier when rotting, Raph still has nightmares from that year). Mikey does the stunning carvings that make people take classy insta picks. Raph likes decorating the house in Halloween and Fall motifs.

Donnie thrives on Halloween because he can wander the streets for most of October with NO costume and people just assume he's one of those Halloween weirdos, plus it's NYC so it's routine as usual/same shit as always.

Raph and Mikey make GOD TIER Pumpkin and Apple Pies. The entire house will smell like a fucking fall heaven for weeks when they start baking for the holidays. Once thanksgiving is over? The house will be doused in peppermint and other Christmas themed scents. Except Donnie's stuff, they aggressively keep the scents away from Donnie who hates them.

Splinter doesn't even know why they celebrate Christmas or Thanksgiving or really any holiday, he certainly didn't, but when he was looking up parenting books they were very American and insisted he do so, it was lots of Christmas and other mainstream Americana stuff. He did however tell the boys that if they wanted to explore other religions they could. April introduced them to the other December holidays like Hanukkah and Kwanza and Yule and managed to get a bunch of college friends from those religions to help the boys celebrate them.

Splinter and New Years post Krang is probably the most aggressive the boys see him when it comes to family traditions. This house will be decked in the traditional Japanese New Year decor, and he makes Leo teleport them to Japan for Hatsumode. He's a lot better about trying to participate in Holidays with the Boys

Devotion to the Aesthetic Chapter 2

Summary: For most of her life, Midoriya Izumi has been bullied. If it's not due to her Quirk status it was due to her fascination for retro movies that developed into a love for the aesthetic of 1950s America. Even after moving away from her toxic environment at age ten, she hides her love for it from her immediate outside world. Instead, she runs a HeroTube channel where she tries retro recipes, bakes cakes in honour of heroes and rants about them. She still dreams of being a hero, but fears people finding out her other passion.

When she enters UA, she finds friends, faces down an old bully and discovers that sometimes- being devoted to an aesthetic isn't such a bad thing.

  Izumi hummed as she walked into the door to her classroom, nodding politely at a group of girls who called out greetings to her. All three girls wore the same black skirt, white blouse under a black vest as Izumi, with blue bows on the front. One girl had her long hair loose, while another had it in a braid. The third wore hers cropped to her earlobes with a face mask over the lower half of her face. 

      “Hey Midoriya, we’re going to study for entrance exams this weekend and tonight. Want to join?” Asked the long-haired girl named Watanabe Hanae, the girl grinning as her hair flashed colours. Mood Hair was such an interesting Quirk to Izumi. It made Watanabe one of the most honest class members, being someone who barely held to traditional Japanese etiquette, thinking if they could see her mood so easily, who cared.  Her hair showed her excitement and nerves about the upcoming exams.

      “Yeah, sure! I’ve got gymnastics and martial arts in the evenings on weekends, but I’m free until six, and I’m free tonight,” Izumi agreed. She ignored the scoff coming from across the room. Her new school mainly possessed good people, but there were always a few bad apples. One of which was Takahashi Kiba. He didn’t do anything, but his scoffs alongside his comments did get some notice. Luckily her school had teachers who would not take his words lying down and would put a stop to them, a mass improvement over her old schools. 

      “Excellent! We’re meeting at the Guardian Library this weekend. The one with that huge statue of the guy holding that little baby?” Watanabe said. “Though tonight we’re going to Nabu Central Library.”

      “I know the one,” Izumi agreed. “Meet in the morning on Saturday?”

       “Oh yes, around eleven, we think,” Watanabe replied, and the girl who didn’t have her face covered shot Izumi a smile. The one with the mask gave a peace sign as she closed her eyes. Hasegawa Sakura and Goto Kasumi were some of the nicest people Izumi had ever met. Even with Goto’s mild kleptomania. They were both beautiful girls with dark hair and eyes, though Goto tended to stand out more with the purple make-up she’d sneak on after school. The strict dress code prohibited make-up, but Goto loved her purple lipstick. Hasegawa’s mask could stand out, but she seemed like any other person with a Quirk requiring her to wear one.

      Izumi sat down in her seat as their teacher came into the room, prompting most of the class to sit down. She began to list what she’d do over the weekend mentally. Meet up Saturday for the study session, go to gymnastics, then martial arts. Meaning she’d have to dress modern. Not a huge deal, but she usually liked her weekends spent in her favourite outfits.

      Who’d think I’d have friends that would want me out with them, she thought in amusement as the teacher began homeroom with announcements. Izumi loved her school. From the teachers who tried to having friends- even the uniform was terrific. The Aldera school system used cheap materials while also being incredibly strict. Her new school did have a strict code but also allowed for their students to have multiple options that were well made and nice looking. Her dad came through with the school. He also made a point to speak with her more, something Izumi loves as she liked taking with him more frequently.  

      No bullies, her dad in her life, her mom supported her fully, and her YouTube account had a lot of followers. There wasn’t much Izumi could want out of life other than to maybe be able to dress how she wanted in public. 

      I can do that when I’m a hero, Izumi thought. I’ll wear a dress as my costume and use kitchen utensils for weapons! Izumi wanted to pull out her notebook for hero stuff but knew her teacher wouldn’t be happy. But her fingers itched to look at the costume she designed and the weapon ideas she had. Hero names covered the inside of her notebook, some silly like RetroGirl but a few she seriously considered. One had been born from her mother’s retro anime collection too. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Seeing one of the best fighters in the entire series happily calls herself just a housewife made Izumi want that as a name. Helped that they shared the same name.

      As the day went on, Izumi’s mind would focus on school while also pondering her next set of videos. She hadn’t analyzed any retired heroes in a while, and she’d heard that a few who taught at UA were withdrawing from the hero-hero business to focus on teaching. It wouldn’t be too hard to remove some of the riskier information…

     “Hey, Midoriya!” A voice said. Izumi blinked and saw that Watanabe stood next to her desk, a frown on her face. “School’s done; you zoned out.”

      “Yeah,” Goto said, already digging in her bag for make-up. “You alright?”

      “I’m fine. Just thinking about UA.” Izumi said with a laugh. Not a complete lie.

      “You’re going to make it, Midoriya,” Hasegawa told her. 

       “We all are,” Goto voiced. “You’re going to make it in heroics; Hasegawa will terrify everyone with business management, I’m going to rock in support, and Watanabe will rule general studies.” 

      “Why support?” Hasegawa asked. “You’d be good in PR.”

      “I’d try and murder any hero I am assigned to; you can’t deny it,” Goto replied. She finally pulled out some purple lipstick and a mirror from her bag. Izumi chuckled as she stood, putting her things into her backpack as Goto casually put the lipstick on. “Watanabe would do well in business.”

      “Please, the only reason I’m bothering with high school is that I’m technically still under watch,” Watanabe snorted. “It’s either go to general studies for high school or check in every five weeks.” Izumi and the other girls all groaned. None liked that Watanabe had to be under watch; it made no sense.

      The four left the school and started the walk to the station. All could technically go to cram school, but Goto had been banned after her kleptomania got the better of her when she was seven, while Hasegawa’s mask caused issues. Izumi didn’t like the atmosphere, and Watanabe felt weird being in the schools, which made sense given her whole story. Around six years in a coma, obviously older than anyone else in school, barely any memory of her childhood; frankly, Watanabe didn’t remember her proper age either. She thought she was most likely sixteen rather than the fourteen the other girls were. However, the heroes kept a close eye on her due to all of that. Watanabe tried not to let it bother her, but sometimes she seemed wrecked emotionally about it. When that happened, her friends tried to cheer her up.

      The four friends got onto the train to Nabu, chatting with one another. Izumi took a moment to text her mother, who replied back that one of her friends had asked her to go to a movie, so she would do that instead of waiting for Izumi. Izumi smiled, happy her mother was also making friends before putting her phone into her pocket.

      “So anyway,” Hasegawa was saying. “I tell this guy that he’ll die if he touches the mask. Not as in I’ll do it, but as in my Quirk is uncontrollable, and I wear the mask to cover it. He gets shocked and then starts ranting about dangerous Quirks and how we should all be locked up, right?”

      “Wow,” Goto interjected. “What a moron. He said this in front of Gang Orca?”

      “I know. Here I am, staring at this guy who’s ranting about locking people like me up. All I’m thinking is: I just came here to see the fish and hear about them from a hero. But Gang Orca is like, ‘So you want people like me locked up too?’” Hasegawa cackled. “The look on his face! Hilarious.”

      “Some people are idiots,” Watanabe sniffed. “Oh, that’s a dangerous Quirk; they must be evil,” she said the last words in a mocking tone, a scowl on her face as she glared at nothing. 

      “Or ‘oh, that’s your Quirk. It’s cute.’” Goto said in a high-pitched voice, acting like she was baby talking to someone.

      “But you don’t have a Quirk, so you must be cheating,” Izumi offered in her snobbiest voice. 

      “Now, you need to sit in the front so we can keep an eye on you,” Hasegawa said in an old lady tone. All four girls burst into quiet giggles, trying not to disturb the other train riders. When they reached their stop, they got off to a thumbs up from a bird-headed teen, making Watanabe shoot him two of her own.

      The four girls wandered towards the library, still chatting though their mocking of past comments towards them slid by. Instead, they discussed things to study, launching into their normal debate about the best way to do it. Hasegawa swore by studying for ten minutes at a time for each subject, taking a break for fifteen before doing it again. Watanabe believed in thirty minutes for each subject broken up by ten-minute breaks. Goto would randomly pull out a book to study for an hour, take a break, then keep going. Meanwhile, Izumi believed in forty minutes on literature, easily her worst subject despite her creativity, with a ten-minute break before continuing with studying her other subjects at thirty minutes for a time. She would then study literature again.

      “I’m just saying, if you study other things simultaneously, it gets jumbled up,” Goto said to Watanabe, who shook her head. They were almost at the library, just needing to pass one more alley.

      “You don’t get enough time with each subject-” she began but was stopped by the sounds of loud, mean laughter. All four girls paused to look down the alley. A group of boys were standing in front of another with purple hair.

      “You should be locked up!” One of the boys taunting the purple-haired boy said. “A villain like you is a danger around normal people.”

      “Yeah, we’re going to be seeing you one day! Shinsou Hitoshi, the brainwashing villain.” another said with a sneer. The friends all traded looks before Goto grinned, wide and mischievous. She waggled her eyebrows, as Watanabe bared her own toothy grin. However, Izumi was the first to move.

      “Shinsou!” Izumi cried out, running towards him with a beaming smile. The purple-haired boy looked surprised while his bullies were giving her startled looks. “We were looking everywhere for you!”

      “Yeah!” Goto agreed as she came over, the other girls following. “We wondered if you were running late!” Izumi burst through the boys around Shinsou to grab his arm, dragging him out through the bullies as Goto moved to grab his other arm. Hasegawa and Watanabe slid behind them, the taller girls providing a barrier. They moved quickly to get the boy out of the group before any bullies could protest. Shinsou seemed to get the picture, letting them pull him along. Once they reached the street, they angled themselves towards the library.

      “Hey, you alright?” Izumi asked the boy, who still looked a bit stunned. He looked at her in shock.

      “Yeah, I’m fine,” he said, shaking his head. “Thank you for helping me.” he glanced to where she still held his arm. Izumi glanced to before she felt her cheeks flush, letting go with a cough.

      “It’s no problem!” Watanabe chirped. She flung her arms out happily. “Bullies suck, and helping others is what we do!”

      “Especially Quirkist bullies,” Hasegawa said darkly. Shinsou blinked, looking at the four girls. His eyes were slightly wide as he looked between them before letting out a bit of a chuckle.

      “You can say that again,” he told the girls, prompting some groans.

      “No, Goto.” three girls said at once as Goto opened her mouth. She pouted upon hearing them speak.

      “You just have no taste.” she declared, sticking her nose in the air. “Hey, Shinsou, want to actually study with us?” 

      “Sure…” Shinsou said slowly, but he seemed willing to see what would happen next rather than wanting to scream. Izumi hid a grin. It looked like they got a new friend out of the day, which was not a bad day.

 As for Shinsou Hitoshi, he felt confused. Somewhat shocked, truthfully, that a group of girls saved him out of nowhere. They heard Nara bullying him and decided to step in to deal with it. They didn’t back away even after hearing it was for his Quirk. From the looks of one of them, they might face the same crap spewed at him. A face mask like that usually meant a Quirk related to their breath that couldn’t be turned off. Almost nine times out of ten, it was a dangerous one. 

 The rest he couldn’t place. Other than the girl with the hair changing colours. Shinsou looked between the four girls, who grinned and laughed together, a smile slowly crossing his face. He did have a few friends at his school, but they were more lunchtime friends, hanging out during breaks. He hoped, a small bright flame, that maybe these girls would be friends to him.

 And you know, hanging out with pretty girls was awesome.

Notes: -Sorry for the long wait! And sorry for the shortness but I struggled with this for some reason. -One of the things that’s always hit me hard is that Melissa is never treated as bad as Izuku is in canon for being Quirkless. Thus I’ve always prescribed to the idea it’s because of people Izuku is around as a kid. So in this AU with Izumi leaving Aldera she finds herself actually making friends! -I looked up common surnames and saw Goto. Instantly I thought of Kasumi Goto from Mass Effect so… here! Goto Kasumi has the power to produce flash bangs and yes she has kleptomania. It’s mild and usually her friends just bring a lot of pencils and she takes those. She’s not allowed to go to the store without anyone and the two times she has she approached the cashier or a worker to explain. She tends to get followed due to this. -We get Shinsou who joins the group early!!! He’s now friends with a bunch of girls. *cackles* Oh the fun that’ll be. -While struggling, I did find myself liking the fact I ended it here. Shinsou introduced, a small social media bit, and a promise of more. -Hope you guys liked!
