SUBLIME CINEMA #618 - GATE OF FLESH
Seijun Suzuki was Japan’s foremost nihilist director - he was a master of the underground, and of schlocky, surrealist B-movies, and overcame being blacklisted in Japan to finish out his career as an internationally renowned artist. His movies were so heightened and beautiful that many could also be called masterpieces.
Gate of Flesh is lesser known than Branded to Kill or Tokyo Drifter, but it’s no less great.
