Request to Japanese language learners

About 6 years ago I was studying Japanese with a teacher who got me to buy a Japanese language textbook.

I really liked it.

I want to recommend it to other Japanese learners and teachers but I cannot remember what it was called.

It wasn’t Genki.

It wasn’t Minna no Nihongo.

It wasn’t Japanese for Busy People.

The only things I remember:

- it had a darkish blue cover

- near the beginning there was a short article about Einstein which explained why he was sticking his tongue out in that famous photo

Anyone know what I’m talking about?

Here's the non-art project I was working on. Kana-writing quiz sheets! The characters are randomly selected from a list of all the kana syllables, including diacritics and diagraphs.

The first half of the sheet has romaji and two blank spaces for writing the hiragana and katakana versions on the syllables. The second half of the sheet, intended to be folded out of sight, contains the answer key.

Hitting delete on any blank space(or changing the document in any way) will reroll the sheet. (The white cells directly to the right of the katakana squares are NOT blank, just whited out, and contain info vital for the sheet to work) [NOTE: You will need to download the document and open it in OpenOffice or LibreOffice for this to work. In Google drive it's just a static sheet]

It's intended to be printed out and used as a daily quiz/refresher. The left margin is wide enough to allow for a three hole punch or whatever binding option you prefer.

Diacritical characters in the T group that have the same Hepburn romanization as characters from other groups are noted with a period in front of the Romaji.

文法：〜ては（If・Because + Bad Result/Whenever ~/Repetitive Actions）

A(て-form)＋は、B。

In spoken Japanese, ては and では become the contractions ちゃ and じゃ respectively.

We’ve seen ては combine with phrases like ならない、だめ、いけない to mean something that you “must not do.” However, ては has several different uses.

If・Because + Bad Result

Aては、B。 （A［普通形］＋のでは、B。）* If/Because A, then B (Bad Result).

This is the base form for the grammars てはいけない and しなくちゃならない. ては is a conditional whose usage is very similar to ～たら, but while ～たら is neutral, ては carries a negative implication. It's used to express a negative result due to some action, or even just one's negative reaction to that action.* While it's common to see it paired with だめ・ならない・いけない like in the above grammars, it is not limited to those endings.

先輩　ついてきちゃ意味ないです［ビクッ］ Senpai, there's no point if you're just going to follow me. [Startled] [Speaker is on an errand from Senpai to fetch a drink.]

Of course, depending on the translation, these alternate endings can still carry the meaning of "that must (not) be."

未来の僕の奥さんに傷が残っちゃ大変だ It would be a problem if my future wife were scarred. (= I can't allow my future wife to be scarred.)

Whenever ～

While て-form is used to simply connect two clauses to indicate a simple sequence of actions, ては is used to describe an action that keeps happening. In this case, ては is only formed from verbs.*

A(Verb) て、B。 When A, then B. A(Verb) ては、B。 Whenever A, then B.

These actions are habitual, with B happening every time A occurs. This meaning is not necessarily negative, and the phrase is not repeated.* *

そっ！あの赤いの行ったとこ 世界のいろんなとこ見たくてさ バイトで金貯めちゃ旅してんだ Yeah! Those red pins are the places I've been. See, I really wanna travel all over the world, And I go on a trip whenever I save up enough money working part-time.

Repetition

ては can be used to emphasize two actions happening over and over, similar to ～たり～たりする. However, while たり gives several examples (out of many), ては really stresses the repetition.* These two actions can be completely unrelated, even opposite actions. The ては phrase can be repeated twice, or the order of the verbs even inverted to further emphasize the repetition. This form is only formed from verbs.

A(Verb) ては、B。 Do A and B repeatedly, every day, constantly, always. A(Verb) ては、B、AてはB。 Repeatedly A-ing and B-ing, A-ing and B-ing. A(Verb) ては、B、BてはA。 Repeatedly A-ing and B-ing, B-ing and A-ing.

When repeated twice, the two actions are opposites (ex: turn on and off, draw and erase, eat and sleep.)*

だから何度も目覚めては　確認するにゃ So I keep opening my eyes over and over, just to check. [To keep the cat pun, consider: "meowny times" instead of "over and over".]

Advice & Suggestions

This one is another usage that is similar to ～たら, this time giving the advice a more elevated feel than the casual たら, or softens the impact of a straightforward ていただけませんか.

Aてはいかがでしょう。 Aてはいただけませんか。 Aては… [unfinished to allow listener to fill in the blanks]

Attempt with expected failure

ては is used to modify てみる when you're not optimistic about the outcome of an attempt.

Aてはみます。 I will at least give A a try...

this year has so far been the worst when it actually comes to japanese studying... its been very inconsistent (and i'm still on chapter one on the textbook i got like 7-8 months ago).

these days, i've mostly been using tadoku to help with my reading. my most recent reads were 彼氏が欲しい！, まだ？ and ピーターラビットのお話. i usually write down vocabulary and translations (in furigana as writing in kanji still stresses me out).

if i get round to it, i may write up a vocabulary list for some of the common words from each of the stories i've read... maybe when i'm more active again!!

i also brought a new folder today for my japanese language studies and used my old one towards work stuff that used to live in my uni folder!!!

JLPT N5 - くなる and くする

This grammar point is very simple. You use くなる when the condition of something becomes a certain way by itself. On the other hand, くする is used when the condition of something is changed by an outside agent (either a person or a thing). In this post, let’s look at these two very basic constructions and how the Japanese works.

Here is your vocabulary:

 【The Grammar】

The grammar is very simple. First, you take an adjective or a noun and change them to their adverbial forms. For example, the adjective 長い has an adverbial form of 長く. The noun ひま has an adverbial form of ひまに.

After you make the adverbial forms of the adjective or the noun, you just put it before either なる or する. That’s it!

We talked about the く connector in this post and about the adverbial に in this post.

I should point out that while this grammar point appears in most JLPT books and websites as くなる and くする, as you can see in the picture above, nouns don’t use く! For that reason, I choose to call this point adverb ✙ なる and adverb ✙ する.

【adverb + なる】

Here are some examples with なる:

① 熱が下がって、気分がだいぶ｛よくなりました｝。

＝fever will go down and then feeling became considerably better

= My fever went down and then I felt much better.

②  この仕事が終わったら、少し｛ひまになる｝と思います。

= when work finishes, a little bit, will become free, I think

= I think that when work finishes, I’ll have more time.

③ このごろ仕事が減って、前ほど｛忙しくなくなった｝。

= these days, work decreased and so as much as before, became not busy

= These days, I have less work and so I’m not as busy as before.

④ きみは｛大人になったら｝、｛何になりたい｝の。

= when you become an adult, what want to become

= When you grow up, what do you want to be (and explain)?

Some things to notice:

In example 1, the sense is that when the fever went down, the person’s mood got better by itself.

In example 2, the condition of having more free time arises naturally when work decreases. (ひま can have the connotation of having absolutely nothing to do and can be considered rude by some people. I use the word for myself sometimes, but I never seriously refer to other people as ひま.)

Concerning example 3, the negative form of 忙しい is with 忙しくない. If you want to make THAT into an adverb, it will become  忙しくなく. This was very difficult for me when I was just beginning Japanese.

Finally, Example 4 shows that the question word of 何 can be treated as a noun. This makes sense if you think of it as a placeholder for whatever answer the listener will give. Also, because the speaker uses the word きみ we know that the speaker and listener are close. It would make sense if it were a parent-child relationship. きみ is NOT used with people that you have just met or that you don’t know well!

【adverb + する】

Here are some examples with する:

⑤（父が子どもに）もっと部屋を｛きれいにしなさい｝。

= father to his child: a little bit more the room, make it clean

= Clean up your room a bit more.

⑥ このケーキ、ちょっと大きいから、｛半分にして｝ください。

= this cake, a bit big and so make it half please

= This cake is a bit (too) big so please cut it in half.

⑦ スカートを5センチぐらい｛短かくして｝ください。

= this skirt, about 5 centimeters make it short please

= Please shorten this skirt about 5 centimeters.

Notice that examples 5, 6 and 7 all include someone (other than the speaker) making a thing (a room, a cake, and a skirt) a different condition than the current one. This is when you will want to use adverb + する.

【Conclusion】

The grammar points of adverb ✙ なる and adverb ✙ する are pretty simple to understand. That is why they are considered Level N5.  Adverb ✙ なる shows a person or a thing becoming a different condition by itself.  Adverb ✙ する shows a person or a thing changing to a different condition by a different person or thing.

First Japanese notes!

The way I’ve planned to approach this is to first go through all hiragana and all the words that use those hiragana that are listed for JLPT N5 vocabulary. I’ll also add small notes and some additional Japanese study notes. After hiragana I’ll add katakana and kanji and will also start adding grammar at some point. But for now we are starting simple :)

currently on a trip to drop off my brother at college! I’m unfortunately unable to help with the move in but I brought along my japanese study things to keep me busy! it makes me sad to see off my brother, but i’m also so excited for him! i know this will be a bright new chapter for him :)

anyway, after finding the resources that work with me, and maintaining a realistic study schedule, i definitely have found a groove in studying japanese that i’ve never had before! makes me excited for my own new chapter ahead…
