-Judith Leyster (Dutch, 1609-1660)

During her life her works were highly recognized, but she got forgotten after her death and rediscovered in the 19th century. In her paintings could be identified the acronym "JL", asually followed by a star, she was the first woman to be inserted in the Guild of St. Luke, the guild Haarlem's artists.

-Artemisia Gentileschi (Italian, 1593-1656)

"... Si è talmente appraticata che posso osar de dire che hoggi non ci sia pare a lei, havendo fatto opere che forse i principali maestri di questa professione non arrivano al suo sapere". This is how the father Orazio talked about his nineteen year old daughter to the Medici's court in Florence.

In 1611, Artemisia got raped, and she had to Undergo a humiliating trial, just to marry so that she could "Restore one's reputation" , according to the morality of the time. Only after a few years Artemisia managed to regain her value, in Florence, in Rome, in Naples and even in England, her oldest surviving work is "Susanna and the elders".

-Elisabeth Louise Vigèe Le Brun (French, 1755-1842)

She was a potrait artists who created herself a name during the Ancien Règime, serving as the potrait painting of the Queen of France Marie Antoinette, she painted 600 portraits and 200 landscapes in the course of her life.

-Augusta Savage (Afro-American, 1892-1962)

Augusta started making figures when she was a child, which most of them were small animals made out of red clay of her hometown, she kept model claying, and during 1919, at the Palm Beach County Fair, she won $25 prize and ribbon for most original exhibit. After completing her studies, Savage worked in Manhattan steam laundries to support her family along with herself. After a violent stalking made by Joe Gould that lasted for two decades, the stalker died in 1957 after getting lobotomized. In 2004, a public high school, Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts, in Baltimore, opened.

-Marie Ellenrieder (German,1791-1863)

She was known for her portraits and religious paintings. During a two years long stay in Rome, she met some Nazarenes (group of early 19th century German romantic painters who wanted to revive spirituality in art),after becoming a student of Friedrich Overbeck and after being heavily influenced by a friend, she began painting religious image, getting heavily inspired by the Italian renaissance, more specifically by the artist Raphael. In 1829, she became a court painter to Grand Duchess Sophie of Baden.

-Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot (French,1841-1893)

Morisot studied at the Louvre, where she met Edouard Manet, which became her friend and professor. During 1874 she participated at her first Impressionist exhibition, and in 1892 sets up her own solo exhibition.

-Edmonia Lewis or also called "wildfire" (mixed African-American and Native American 1844-1907)

Edmonia was born in Upstate New York but she worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first ever African American and Native American sculptor to achieve national and international fame, she began to gain prominence in the USA during the Civil Ware. She was the first black woman artist who has participated and has been recognized to any extent by the American artistic mainstream. She Also in on Molefi Kete Asante's list of 100 Greatest African Americans.

-Marie Gulliemine Benoist (French, 1768-1826)

Daughter of a civil servant, Marie was A pupil of Jaques-Louis David, whose she shared the revolutionary ideas with, painting innovative works that have caused whose revolutionary ideals he shared, painting innovative works that caused discussion. She opened a school for young girl artists, but the marriage with the banker Benoist and the political career Of the husband had slowly had effect on her artistic career, forcing her to stop painting. Her most famous work is Potrait of Madeline, which six years before slavery was abolished, so that painting became a simbol for women's emancipation and black people's rights.

-Lavinia Fontana (Italian, 1552-1614)

She is remembered for being the first woman artist to paint an altarpiece and for painting the first female nude by a woman (Minerva in the act of dressing), commissioned by Scipione Borghese.

-Elisabetta Sirani. (Italian, 1698-1665)

Her admirable artistic skills, that would vary from painting, drawing and engraving, permitted her, in 1660, to enter in the National Academy of S. Luca, making her work as s professor. After two years she replaced her father in his work of his Artistic workshop, turning it into an art schools for girls, becoming the first woman in Europe to have a girls' school of painting, like Artemisia Gentileschi, she represent female characters as strong and proud, mainly drawn from Greek and Roman stories. (ex. Timoclea Kills The Captain of Alexander the Great, 1659).

Jaques Louis David, Antoine Laurent Lavoisier and Marie Anne Lavoisier, 1788, oil/canvas (Met Museum, NYC)

Lavoisier was a pioneering chemist credited with the discovery of oxygen and the chemical composition of water through experiments in which his wife collaborated. However, he was also involved in studies of gunpowder and a misunderstanding about his removal of this precious commodity from the Bastille in the summer of 1789 threw his alliances into question. This mishap and his status as a tax collector (the more prosaic means by which he funded his scientific research) led him to be guillotined in 1794.

Prefacio de mi libro... ?

Jeanne-Françoise-Julie-Adélaide Bernard no tuvo hermanos ni hijos. A los 15 años de edad, sus padres la presentaron en matrimonio con Jaques-Rose Récamier, banquero y amigo de la familia. Unos han llegado a decir que era él su verdadero padre. Esto no lo he podido comprobar dentro de mis investigaciones y creo que me gusta no saber. Este matrimonio de camaradería y conveniencia (debido a que era la única forma de heredar sus riquezas) daba a entender que Madame era cuidada por Monsieur Récamier. Sin embargo, jamás fue privada de hacer la vida que ella quería. Al investigar sobre sus actitudes y formas de ser me queda claro que no era el tipo de mujer que se iba a dejar manipular.

Yo tenía curiosidad antes de ser canta autora solista independiente, antes de saber qué carrera iba a estudiar; escuchaba por aquí y por allá que mis tías o mi abuela mencionaban a esta “Madame Récamier” con chismes como: “Se acostó con el hermano de napoleón y era amiga de la esposa!”, “TenÍa una casa de citas”, “Todos sus amigos eran de la sociedad, ella influyó mucho en decisiones y… etc, etc. 

Luego, terminando la preparatoria muchos amigos tomaron el “año sabático”. Pero yo me quedé a estudiar música y terminar mi primer disco de mi banda: “Tripped lips”. Pero ese verano sí viajé a Europa por un mes aprovechando que mi hermano mayor estaba en Milán, estudiando de intercambio universitario su carrera en diseño industrial. Escribí un diario de ese viaje por cierto. Toño, mi hermano, es el mejor compañero de museo del mundo. Su manera de explicar y sus logísticas eran lo mejor. Desayunábamos en el hostal y nos íbamos caminando todo el día por las calles de Milán, Nápoles, Palermo, Roma, París y cerramos en Barcelona donde estaban mis mejores amigas, en ese entonces, y ahí mis visitas fueron más a antros que cualquier otra cosa. Yo sólo contaba con 300 euros para todo mi mes. Eran mis ahorros de estar cantando en bares y sobras de dinerito que me daban mis padres. 

Llegamos a parís en una noche fresca y "dormimos” en el lobby del hostal, porque no habíamos hecho reservación. A las 9 am pudimos pedir un cuarto y dejar nuestras cosas pues lo entregaban hasta las 3 pm. Mi humor no estaba del todo bien. Estaba molesta porque no habíamos previsto esta llegada. Yo solo quería comer y dormir. Mi hermano dijo, “vamos al sagrado corazón”, recuerdo que ahí en el café “dos molinos” que sale en la película de “Amelie” probé mi primer café espresso, y, me enamoré. El olor, el sabor, algo sucedió en ese momento que comprendí esta bebida. Mi cuerpo retomó fuerzas y de pronto entendí: “Estoy en parís!” a las 3 volvimos al hostal y dormimos hasta las 9 pm. El sol de verano seguía arriba y salimos a caminar un rato más ya descansados y buscar una crepa frente a la Torre Eiffel. Ahora que hago estos recuerdos, todo conocimiento histórico que adquiero y tengo, gira al rededor de los años en que Juliette vivió. Madame vivió en un parís donde no había Torre Eiffel, en un parís donde las modernidades eran las carrozas e importaciones lujosas como el chocolate, las telas y los muebles elegantes. En un parís revolucionario y pensante, saliendo apenas de la época del terror, con miedos y recuerdos de la guillotina de Robespiere.  No había autos, aviones, cámaras de foto o grabaciones musicales. Me gusta ver los mapas del parís de ese entonces. Del mundo de ese entonces.

El día siguiente, al llegar al Louvre yo iba con toda la intención de encontrar a Madame Récamier, No sabía del cuarto tan hermoso donde la tienen, justo en frente de otra pintura de Jaques Louis David “La consagración de Napoleón y la coronación de Josefina (1806).”.

En esta pintura, incompleta aún, Madame se ve sola, pero no triste, se ve tranquila pero fuerte, se ve bonita y lo sabe, pero es tan discreta que no tiene porque hacer que eso sea su atracción principal. Ella piensa, y mucho, y hace cosas con sus pensamientos, su mirada astuta y serena te lo dice. En ese momento no pensé tanto, sólo la admiré y recuerdo que me sentía un poco nerviosa. No sé porqué.

Unos años después, volví a París en un viaje de amigas y la fui a ver de nuevo. También me puse nerviosa, y más porque ya había comenzado mi carrera un par de años antes, había recibido la Beca María Grever y sentía nuevas responsabilidades en mi trayecto. No tenía idea que estaría escribiendo tanto sobre ella ahora. Pero sabía que esta mujer me había influenciado, y surgieron nuevamente tantas preguntas al ver su pálido y hermoso rostro. ¿Porqué quiero ser como tu?

Ahora sé que fue criada en Lyon en un convento con puras mujeres. Su madre la llevaba a eventos de música y arte, y ella cantaba. Tocaba el arpa y el piano. Este vistazo al mundo de arte y sabiduría le dio el deseo de querer figurar en el, pero no se debe de olvidar que la influencia siempre vino de su madre, y ahí encuentro nuestra primera similitud. Juliette Recamier, al convertirse en Madame Récamier, se fue a París con el Banquero Récamier y entró a un nuevo mundo soñado. Su gracia divina es la que la llevaba a convertirse en una de las “Salonnieres” mas influyentes de sus tiempos, creando amistades importantes y duraderas ya que los procuraba más a ellos que a sí misma. Los personajes de esta historia son claves en la vida de Madame. Todos le enseñaron algo, le dieron un poco de su esencia y personalidad.

Hoy me atrevo a jugar con mis propias experiencias e intercalarlas con las suyas. Un vaivén de emociones y momentos donde ella y yo coexistimos en tiempos paralelos con palabras inmortalizadas. Será que era cuestión de tiempo que una chica del futuro con el apellido Récamier buscara en esta Madame respuestas a sus inquietudes de la vida y el amor? Será que esta es mi misión? Después de estar escribiendo durante lo que va de mi vida, sin razón, sólo “porque si”, en diarios de viaje, cartas de amor que jamás se mandarán, poemas en servilletas, ideas de historias que quizás no salgan de esos cuadernos informales llenos de garabatos y canciones, con bocetos de flores en las esquinas, frases sin sentido, sueños que valen la pena recordar y narrar como si fuesen pequeños cuentos surrealistas que la mente crea por mi? Madame Récamier mandó quemar sus memorias antes de morir. Y si las reconstruyo?
