Also, ideal antenna-to-body ratio on this ramshorn
These had other, fancier plants in them, but I was a dumb dumb and did not keep up with water changes during the cycling. However, Anacharis (Egeria Densa, Brazilian waterweed) works just fine in there! Mainly for the reasons it's very invasive 馃檭
But it's putting down roots and keeping the water clean, so as long as I trim it, the snails seem happy. It may prevent the growth of some kinds of algae though, so replacing it with something else in the future may still happen.
The snails are also much happier without fish biting their antennas down to nubbins QuQ

The jar needs a bit of a water top up but other than that, its going strong, never had a problem with water parameters and plant growth is starting to pick up as we approach the warmer months.
The jar doesnt have a heater in it and my ambient room temperature kept it at around 15-16C (59-61F) throughout winter.
Theres no filter in it either with all filtration being done via the plants in the jar.
No air stone either so it does have some pretty bad surface algae but the shrimp and snail seem to enjoy eating it.
Day 4 vs Day 18: I think that鈥檚 diatom but without circulation I guess that was bound to happen, also I have it under my grow lights and I think you give plants more light than aquariums so that鈥檚 a factor. But the way the red root floaters ( phyllanthus fluitans) are growing I guess they will block out a lot of light soon.
The ludwigia hasn鈥檛 done much but it looks alright. The聽limnophila had grown some and the bucephalandra looks bad in this pic but he鈥檚 fine, he鈥檚 got a new leaf.
There鈥檚 plenty of algae on the glass, I guess I need to clean that.
my boss asked me to come up with an exhibit for the nature center this season and i鈥檓 having so much trouble coming up with something interactive and kid-friendly why can鈥檛 i just write a 10 page paper and tack it to the wall
anyone else get bored and make a tiny terrarium necklace, and then make a hot glue snail with a shell you found in the yard to go inside? because i do 馃し
anyway, his name is Ricardo and he loves his new moss home
Time lapse of my mini jarrarium with creatures and plants from the local lake :)
Flatworm - little red zoomy guy
Bladder snail - the biggest thing and only snail, which you can see eating in X-ray vision apparently
Scuds (Amphipods) - the little shrimpy guys
Ostracods - the little round things darting between plants
Round worms/detritus worms - the white wiggly things that like to make tubes houses from sticks and sand
[Video ID: A slightly sped-up video of a small jar aquarium. A snail is lit from behind as it eats, showing the internal movement of its mouthparts. Tiny shrimp-like creatures scramble between plants and a red worm gracefully sides over the white sand.]
