Riverdale Recap S2E6 . The ‘Sugarman’ and #CherylBOMBSHELL
Tumblr media
So after Cheryl’s soul shattering experience in the last episode, I am beyond pleased to see her absolutely SLAY in this weeks episode. #CherylBombshell for the win. & I am so excited that after this episode I FINALLY feel like RIVERDALE IS BACK, BABY! I loved every second of this week’s episode!!
SO - what’s the drama? .. Well the first scene reminds us that TONI stayed over at Jug? . . .  Really, Juggie? Not even ‘broken up’ for ONE DAY, haven’t even confronted BETTY and THIS IS WHAT YOUR IMMEDIATE REACTION IS? … Sorry, Juggie, but major loss of Brownie points right here … I though Arch was the ‘playboy’. This again, much like Betty’s method of breaking Jug’s heart feels really out of character. Why are you writers doing this to me?
Betty starts to regret her quick ‘betrayal’ of Nick, realising that should the Blackhood kill him, the blood would be on her hands - as the Blackhood commends her for showing her ‘vulnerable’ , ‘dark side’ and in that moment of vulnerability becoming ‘Judge, Jury and Executioner’.
Then there happens to be arranged this little ‘Parent’s Committee’ meeting which has me seriously LOLing. Like - all this time the parents are like whatever - and now they suddenly want to step up to the plate. LMAO - but in all seriousness it’s cool to see them finally showing some concern for what ever darkness and drama is taking over Riverdale. It’s revealed that ‘JJ’ (Jingle Jangle’) is sourced from the ‘Southside’ according to Reggie, and Mayor McCoy vows to round up the Serpents to clear the streets of the ‘JJ’ … There’s a raid at South Side High, but Archie gets Jug out in time.
The Blackhood tells Betty that the maker of the ‘JJ’ is someone known as the ‘Sugarman’ and he wants her to identify this creep as his next target! Betty talks to Sheriff Kelller trying to find out if it could’ve been ‘Clifford Blossom’ , but he tells her that JJ only hit the streets after Clifford’s death. Betty, being convinced that the Sugarman had some connection to Clifford, confronts Cheryl about it. Cheryl finds a drawing she’d done as a child of her , Jason and ‘the Sugarman’ … She tries to confront Penelope (her mum) about it, but Penelope refuses to acknowledge it.
There are some tender scenes from Cheryl in this episode, she’s truly amazing. Madeleine … Massive props this epsiode. We really see a more ‘human’ side to her, Penelope is in a way accepting ‘hush money’ from the St Clairs, and this is breaking Cheryl’s heart. She tells her mum, ‘You could defend your husband against killing your own son, but you can’t take my side.” and she continues that seeing the rest of the family is ‘dead’… ‘I am alive, and I am begging you for once in your life to care about ME more.”  … It’s such a beautiful moment for Cheryl, and I couldn’t be prouder of her!  Nick shouldn’t be allowed to get away scott free.
It’s finally revealed that the ‘Lodges’ are still accepting money from the St Claire as well for their SoDale project - and Veronica can’t accept this. She eventually comes clean to Hiram and Hermoine that Nick tried his sexual predator stunt on her too, but was unsuccessful - and datum do I love the IMMEDIATE change in Hiram’s demeanour he enters total ‘Papa Bear’ mode - like who dare harm my daughter? … Clearly Nick St Clair is as good as dead ;) and they promise to accept no more money from the St Clairs.
Tumblr media
There’s also this kind of Battle between ‘Tall Boy’ and Jug as Tall Boy wants the serpents to team up with the other gang, the Ghoulies. Jug doesn’t seem to think it’s a good idea. Jug and Arch go visit FP in prison and he advises them to challenge the Ghoulies to drag race … if the Serpents win, they don’t pair up with the Ghoulies, and the Ghoulies stop the drug business.
Tumblr media
Reasons I am LOVING this drag race story line … #1 comic reference having Betty in her overalls and working on cars. Yay! This is the Betty Cooper we know and love, and also a great ‘reunion’ of Bughead as Juggie tells her that even if she thought she was trying to protect him, she did ‘the only thing that could actually hurt him’ … My bughead heart be still! #2 Cheryl being the diva chick she was born to be , I LOVE THIS SCENE. She walks past Toni with such an attitude and is like, ‘Not Today, Cha Cha, I was born for this moment’ … and if those aren’t the truest words Cheryl has ever spoken. I’m LOVING it!!
Tumblr media
They manage to scare the Ghoulies off with the help of the cops, and all is okay for the time being. Jughead and Betty have sorted things out, Betty’s also come clean to Veronica and they’re besties again as they team up to help Betty find out who the Sugarman is, and at the same time take control of Blackhood’s game. It’s finally revealed (through Cheryl and Penelope) that the ‘Sugarman’ is actually Mr. Phillips (Juggie’s new teacher in SouthSide) who is caught by Police and imprisoned , as tipped off by Betty who called Sheriff Keller instead of the Blackhood in a bold move to ‘steal’ the game. Of course, the identity still gets out there, and a scene ‘implicates’ that the Blackhood shoots Mr Phillips in his jail cell (but we never actually see the gun go off?) …. ‘Sweet Dreams, Sugarman’
Tumblr media
It also comes to light that the ‘St Clairs’ had a ‘terrible accident’ (accident, my backside) and that Nick St Clair will be facing months of recovery, Veronicas cool response of “Oh Well. Karma’s a Bitch” is just epitomising her position as a ‘Lodge’ and for the first time in ages I have made respect for the girl! Actually adoring this dynamic  TRIO at the moment and wouldn’t mind a little ‘Lodge’ spinoff … they’re just epic and untouchable, and I love it.
Ah. Why do I have to wait for next week? … Any ideas as to who is the Blackhood?? I still can’t figure it out.  Comment some of your theories below. Oh and also, before I sign off for the day, is anyone else feeling this vibe between Reggie & Josie at the moment? Ep 5 and 6 both hinting at a new little ship happening over here, and I’m totally feeling it. Comment your thoughts below!

For those who thought Disney’s Hunchback was dark...
I just finished reading the original novel and it’s completely bonkers.
• Esmeralda is 16, and is saving her virginity for a god (hence Phoebus). She’s actually not a gypsy but was swapped in the night for Quasimodo as a baby by a gypsy. Her mom went psycho and has a flaming hatred for gypsies (but Esmeralda most of all) but goes full Tiger Mom after they are reunited and the guards are coming after her to execute her.
• Phoebus is engaged to a rich woman but wants to bang Esmeralda and even swears to her that he has never loved another soul even while continuing to be engaged to someone else. Just as he’s undressing her (she’s super down, don’t worry), Frollo, who’s been peeping from the next room (100% with permission from Phoebus, who is being paid for the opportunity), stabs Phoebus and blames it on Esmeralda and has her arrested and tortured into confessing to murdering him. Phoebus doesn’t tell anyone what he was doing when he got stabbed and, apart from watching her get saved from the execution for his own murder (yeah, she’s convicted of a murder and he’s totes fine after weeks of recuperation), he does not contribute further to the story really except to get married to his fiance in the end.
• Frollo is not a judge, but the archdeacon in charge of Notre Dame, so it makes more sense for Quasimodo to be living there. He actually volunteers to take care of Quasimodo when he’s left as a foundling at the church and is actually pretty good to Quasi (although the former forces the latter to help kidnap Esmeralda at one point). After Quasimodo rescues Esmeralda from her hanging, Frollo straight up tries to rape her while under sanctuary protection until Quasi goes batshit crazy and Frollo bolts.
• Oh, yeah, and Frollo’s a straight-up alchemist in a secret alchemist society. Like no-doubt-about-it-sorcery. In a church. Yet another reason (along with some serious lust) why he’s not clergy in the Disney movie. His alchemy doesn’t seem to come into play in the novel at all (though I did read an abridged version), but just goes to show that he’s basically the absolute worst priest on the face of the planet.
• Quasimodo doesn’t make an entrance in the novel until waaaaaay late (he’s actually a really minor character and there’s hardly any character development for him), focusing instead on two other characters not in the movie: a playwright philosopher named Gringoire, who stumbles into the Court of Miracles after trying to follow Esmeralda after she escapes Quasi and Frollo trying to kindap her. Esmeralda saves Gringoire from execution by marrying him for a predetermined number of years. They don’t sleep together, but he and the goat Djali (the 100% most accurate character in the movie) become besties and Gringoire ends up saving the goat instead of Esmeralda during Frollo’s 5th attempt to seduce and/or murder her. The other character is Frollo’s younger brother, whose entire purpose in the story is to ask Frollo for money (”for school supplies”) and then getting sloshed with Phoebus until they’re both broke.
• Quasimodo is deaf. He ends up going to court against a judge who is also deaf. The judge gets through court cases by reading up beforehand and asking questions he already knows the answers to. But Quasi can’t hear him so the judge reacts to Quasi’s silence as if he answered and the audience watching is cracking up. The judge sees what’s going on and thinks Quasi’s sassing him and so orders a whipping for basically contempt of court and THAT’S when Esmeralda gives him some water when he’s in the stocks.
• The “Sanctuary!!!” scene is pretty accurate in the movie, though lacking in talking gargoyles, and is way earlier in the story. Esmeralda’s about to be hanged (not burned) and he saves her. She hides out in Notre Dame for months, not hours. It’s actually pretty sweet how he tries to help her and he purposely avoids going near her because (unlike in the movie) Esmeralda is super in love with Phoebus and (unlike in the movie) Esmeralda is repulsed by Quasi’s appearance, which is even more hideous because he only has one eye. But he gives her a whistle for when she needs something and it comes in handy as a rape whistle.
• Frollo’s plan to get Esmeralda out of the cathedral is by convincing the gypsies and other “undesirables” in the Court of Miracles that the Feds (or the Medieval French equivalent) are going to force her out of Notre Dame and while Notre Dame is under siege in her defense, Quasimodo goes Super Sayan and attacks them all, pouring molten lead on them and literally ripping apart the church to hurl down at them. The cops are called out and thousands of people die. Meanwhile, Frollo and Gringoire sneak in to “rescue” Esmeralda from the attacking crowd and then when Gringoire is distracted, Frollo confesses his love again (basically that same line about God failing because the devil in him is stronger than his priestly vows), and when she says no again, he has her arrested for the second time.
• In the end, while Esmeralda’s in jail with her mom, the mom breaks through the bars of their cell. But they draw the suspicion of the guards and while Esmeralda hides in the corner the mom tries to lie that she’s escaped. But then Esmeralda hears Phoebus and calls out to him and the guards are like, “a-HA! Gotcha!” and then they fucking hang her then and there.
• Frollo doesn’t fall from the cathedral--Quasi pushes him. Then he just watches as Frollo tries to get back up and then slips and smashes into several parts of the cathedral on his way down (still alive), then finally the ground (dead). Quasi has a tiny bit of grief that Frollo (one of the two people he cared about) is dead, but it’s very clear that all Quasi had to do was reach out a single hand to save Frollo and he straight up doesn’t.
• Quasi sees that Esmeralda’s dead and disappears in grief. They find a misshapen skeleton years later in the tomb or wherever Esmeralda is buried, clutching her body. The last image is of someone trying to separate their skeletons and them crumbling into dust.
So yeah, someone at Disney read this book and was like, “Yeah, kid’s movie, let’s do it!!!” But still, I love the movie because it has the single greatest score in all Disney movies and there’s Kevin Kline and Jason Alexander and that one nun from Sister Act and it’s just fantastic.
