FYI for followers interested in J-E translation
(This post is most relevant the weekend of April 6, 2024)
If you're near Toronto or can get there for a weekend, consider registering for the IJET conference, organized by the Japan Association of Translators. The early bird discount ends in 24 hours, though registration is still open until May 17.
I first went when I had tried my hand at translating a few things, but had very little experience and by no means would have called myself a pro. I wasn't sure if I'd be welcome there, but everyone was very friendly, and I met a lot of people who I'm still in touch with and showed me that translation is a real career path. There is also a student price for a discount, so even if you're on the fence about whether translation is for you, I'd recommend coming to check it out.
Honestly it may even be best suited to new translators, because you learn about a lot of things you may have never heard before, like patent translation, ATA certification, agencies vs. direct clients, general translation vs. specializing in a field, how to manage a business, etc. etc. etc. Personally I'm most excited for the session on entertainment translation by Katrina Leonoudakis, the keynote speaker by a rakugo-ka (I've been following the manga Akane-banashi pretty religiously) and a few sessions on interpreting, which I always really wish I was better at.
SECONDLY and just as time-sensitive,
The same org (Japan Association of Translators) runs a... maybe month long? seminar on translation every year, where you translate text(s) and compare them to translations by fellow learners in the seminar, and get feedback from more experienced translators. I think you get out of it as much as you put in. I participated way back in 2017 and didn't really know what I was doing, but @kanpeki-bekki just participated last year, and can probably tell you more about it.
The most important part is that the application period is only open for like a week or less every year in April, so if you want to sign up, do it NOW, or keep an eye open in future years!
You do have to pay and register as a JAT member, but honestly that was probably the most beneficial part of it for me, since being a member also means being in the JAT directory, which is how I got recruited for my current job in translation. Other benefits are access to a job board, forums to interact with other translators, videos of past educational sessions, and cheaper registration for other JAT events. JAT also has special interest groups, so if you're interested in Pharma, Legal, Patents, Literature, or Entertainment, it's a good way to meet people interested and working in the same fields.

Sangheili Bracket Round 2 Match 12
More info below:
Rhu 'Vrath:
Debuted in Halo 5: Guardians (Mission Intel)
Once an assassin serving Jul 'Mdama's Covenant, he would infiltrate the Swords of Sanghelios for a mission to kill Arbiter Thel 'Vadam following the death of Jul 'Mdama and failed attack on Vadam lands. While in a camp between battles, Rhu would sneak into the Arbiter's tent for the kill, where he found the Arbiter readying his armor. Upon seeing the Mark of Shame on Thel's bare chest, Rhu would stop and question himself and his previous views on the Arbiter. He would then lose his opportunity as the Arbiter's eyes met his, causing Rhu to look away and abandon the assassination. Following this, he genuinely defected to the Swords of Sanghelios, taking part in further conflict in Nuusra as a Banshee pilot in Attack Wing Jardam. While flying, he would take note of Fireteam Osiris' contributions, reflecting on Jul 'Mdama's statements on humanity and their might.
Jat:
Debuted in Halo: Fractures ("Oasis")
Once living on Glyke, Jat would follow Rojka 'Kasaan to Carrow after the destruction of his homeworld, helping found the city of Rak. When civil war broke out over disputes on how to deal with the humans that had returned to the planet, Jat chose to remain loyal to Rojka and believed in making peace between the two species. To that end, he shadowed a death squad sent to Masov Oasis to incite violence. He would later be discovered by a member named Ruha, who bested him in battle and attempted to execute him, only for a passing human teenager named Dahlia to rescue him. However, this rescue was only due to Dahlia not knowing his species, and she was quick to act uncomfortable around the grateful Jat, even cutting off his introduction so that only his first name is known within the story. Yet she would accept that Jat owed her a life debt and allowed him to escort her to Masov Oasis to seek aid for her ailing settlement. After dropping her off at the human trading post, he would later rescue her and two other humans being taken by hostile Sangheili. Only Jat and Dahlia would flee the oasis, chased by Spectres until they were ultimately forced into a confrontation. While fighting hard, Jat would ultimately be overpowered by four enemies. Just as both were about to be killed, Surakan Militia alerted by the humans they separated from arrived and rescued Dahlia - whilst one of the men callously killed Jat despite Dahlia's protests that he was her friend. Still, his death would not be completely in vain, as Dahlia would later save her home and used the courage he taught her to join the militia.
Additional commentary: MY FUCKING 11-PAGE BLORBO DARLING. What stalls me from constantly re-reading Oasis to see him in action is knowing the ending will always enrage me. He should have lived! He should have kept a lifelong friendship with Dahlia and become an important ally to Rojka! We didn't even get his full name ;_;

Can Jet be considered a villain?
I think people see him as that, especially since he was fighting the heroes of the story in his first episode. And the sides matter to how many people view whether a character is good or bad. This is also why I think people mistakenly think he redeemed himself at death. Because they see him on the same side as the heroes and then assume that means he's good.
It's the same thing that happened with Zuko. So much of Zuko's "growth" was just him being forced to do things because of no other choice or him willingly doing things for his own convenience that coincided with good. The biggest example would be joining the Gaang after the Invasion. Of course he did. The Avatar is alive, meaning he would have no reason for being allowed to stay in the Fire Nation. And Iroh was imprisoned. It would be easier to switch sides.
So people view Zuko as good for working alongside the Gaang even though it was for his best interest. And they view Jet fighting alongside the Gaang as a change and "redeeming" despite it also coinciding with Jet's interests. And also something he has done every episode??
Jet helped Katara, Aang, and Sokka against the soldiers. Jet helped all the orphans living with him. Jet helped the refugees on the ferry have a decent meal. Jet helped Zuko and Iroh have a decent meal. Jet tried to help the people of Ba Sing Se when he thought they were being infiltrated. Jet tried to help Katara and the others find Appa. Jet apologized to Aang for fighting him. Jet comforted Katara when he was dying.
HOW did he redeem himself at death? He's always been helping people!
Anyway I think he could be more anti hero :)

Veer:
Debuted in Halo: The Cole Protocol
A Sangheili Zealot that was handpicked by then Thel 'Vadamee to raid Do You Feel Lucky? during the Battle of Charybdis IX. After this, he would join the mission to investigate illegal trading between Kig-Yar and humans. Veer would survive the betrayal from the Jiralhanae during this mission, becoming captured along with Thel and the bridge crew. However, the team would escape and commandeer a Kig-Yar shuttle, intent on continuing their mission in spite the betrayal. While Thel took warriors Zhar and Saal to Metisette to capture Reth - the ring-leader of the illegal trading - Veer was ordered to remain on the shuttle. From there, his actions and whether or not he even survived the events following this remain unknown.
Additional commentary: I chose him to fill up slots mainly due to his sudden disappearance in the book, and an AO3 fanfic that then attempted to explain his sudden disappearance that I still think about sometimes. Apparently, Halopedia claims, "Veer had a habit for creating war poems, and frequently observed his environments, even in combat situations, to do so." but there's no citations so I can't confirm it. Neat characterization for a first-name-only character if true.

Opposite of a Blessing
This is just me taking a further look into something I said in the last post. Be Blessed & Battle Your Blights! #TheYoungManNÜK #BenDuinDis #NUKnoE #NÜK
Blight! Based on the ending of my last post, I had a thought that sent my mind moving into a directions of discovery. I’m gonna share what I Columbused based on this definition: a thing that spoils or damages something. “the vacant properties are a blight on the neighborhood” There can be many ways that we can become “blessed” in our lives. In the same breath, we may encounter just as many…
