Break in
Jay Halstead x reader
summary: when Jay's girlfriend is home alone while he's at Molly's, someone tries to break into their house
Tumblr media
Y/n was looking disinterestedly through the fridge, closing it with a sigh when she couldn't find anything to eat that she felt like. It was a slow night, her workday had been quiet at the hospital, with only a few patients showing up.
Her boyfriend, Jay, had invited her to join him and the rest of the police department at Molly's. However, she refused, wanting him to spend quality time with his friends, feeling that she had already stolen him from them long enough after he took a few days to take care of her after she fell ill.
Detective Chuckles: Is everything okay out there? The guys miss you! Wish you could be here with me :(
The ringing of her cell phone snapped her out of her thoughts, a small chuckle escaping her lips as she read Jay's message. But she couldn't deny the butterflies that invaded her stomach knowing he was thinking about her. Their relationship was relatively recent, but they had never felt stronger love.
Jay once revealed to her that he realized she was the most important person to him when he was called on an undercover mission. They had only been dating for about 2 months. When he returned, after all the time they hadn't been together, he was shocked to see her waiting for him. He thought she had abandoned him, realizing that she couldn't live with his job, but he was wrong. He ran to her, picking her up and spinning her around a little, her laughter echoing through the room.
After answering his text, Y/n lay down on the couch, watching a movie while waiting for her boyfriend to come home. She didn't even notice when, halfway through the movie, her eyes started to get heavy, and she gave in to sleep.
She woke up again when she heard the lock on the front door click, almost as if someone was trying to get in. Too lazy to get up, thinking it was Jay trying to get in, Y/n tried to call him to remind him he had a key, in case he was already a little tipsy.
At the end of the second ring, the cop answered, but something made Y/n freeze in place, glancing at the door in alarm. She could hear the noise coming from the other people at the bar, meaning he wasn't the one at the door.
"Baby, you there? Is everything okay?" Jay's voice brought her back to reality.
"Jay, aren't you the one trying to get in by any chance?" her voice shook, still standing in the same spot on the edge of the sofa, now raised.
"What? Guys, shut up, I can't hear Y/n. Baby, I told you I'm at the bar with the rest of the group." his voice immediately became serious. "Why? What's happening?"
"Jay, I think someone is trying to get in." Y/n muttered, holding the phone tighter to stop it from falling due to the shaking of her hands. Her wide, frightened eyes were fixed on the door.
As soon as those words left her mouth, Y/n heard a noise on the other side — Jay was shouting something to Severide. Then, there was silence until the sound of Jay's jeep engine was heard.
"Y/n, I need you to listen to me very carefully. You go to our room and lock the door. Then you go to the bathroom and stay in the bathtub until I come and get you. No one else, just me. Do you think you can do that?"
From Jay's voice, Y/n noticed that he went into police mode, speaking calmly but with authority. In fact, this was just so he wouldn't lose control and be able to help his girlfriend, despite the fear that was spreading throughout his body.
"I need verbal responses, baby. Do you understand?"
"I understand." her voice shook.
"Good girl. Everything's going to be okay." Jay tried to comfort her, breaking all the traffic rules and having the sirens on to get home faster.
His heart was tightening in his chest, almost stopping him from breathing. He blamed himself, he knew he should have stayed at home with Y/n, and now she was in danger, and he couldn't protect her.
Behind him, Severide followed him in his vehicle on a 911 call.
"I'm scared, Jay." Y/n's scared voice caught the police officer's attention.
"I know, baby, I know. But I need you to be brave until I arrive. I won't let anything happen to you. I just need you to hold on and then we'll finally go to bed and cuddle. Does that sound good?"
"Yeah." She felt tears coming to her eyes but tried not to let them fall. Just like Jay said, she had to be brave until he came to save her.
Y/n then started to go to her room until she stopped halfway up the stairs when the front door handle stopped turning. For a moment, she thought she was exaggerating and it was just someone who made a mistake in the house. But the panic returned when the automatic rear light came on, indicating that someone had passed by.
Jay only heard the gasp she let out. "What? What's happening?! You need to talk to me, Y/N."
"I think they're trying to get in through the back. I don't know if I locked that door!" She stopped her speech suddenly. "Oh god, I just remembered I left Missy sleeping in the kitchen."
"Y/n, do not go in there just because of the fucking cat!"
Jay didn't even like the little furball who seemed to hate him from the moment Y/n started dating him. However, he knew that his girlfriend would never forgive herself if something happened to the cat.
"Don't scream at me! I would be such a bad owner if I didn't come back to get my cat."
"I don't care about the damn cat when you're in danger!" Jay argued, but he knew Y/n was already heading downstairs to get Missy.
When Y/n arrived, she quickly found the animal on the dining table, looking super calm, an emotion quite contrary to what Y/n was feeling. Picking her up and quickly kissing her head, the girl thought about what her next step in the plan would be: go back up the stairs or find another place to hide.
However, the intruders finally opened the door, and the choice became obvious. Y/n quickly ducked and hid behind the kitchen counter so she wouldn't be seen. On all fours and with Missy under her arm, she grabbed a knife and tried, as silently as possible, to head towards the pantry.
"Y/n, don't go silent on me. Tell me what's going on. I'm three minutes away."
"They're here, Jay. I'm in the pantry with a knife." Her breaths were ragged and shuddering. She had to put her hand over her mouth to stop herself from crying. "I was so stupid. Why didn't I do what you said? I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize. God, don't apologize, sweetheart." Jay muttered with a heavy heart, running his hand over his face in despair, never having felt greater helplessness.
"They're getting closer." Y/n whispered, closing her eyes and holding her hand in front of her mouth so you wouldn't hear her heavy breathing. Jay slammed his hands on the steering wheel, clenching his jaw and thinking about what he could say to his girlfriend. "I love you, Jay. So much."
"Don't say that like it's goodbye, Y/n. I can't take it." He shook his head, using all his strength not to break down and burst into tears. "I'm almost there. One minute."
But Y/n was no longer able to respond. That's because a man, dressed all in black, entered the kitchen and looked around. She was peeking through the pantry bars, hoping he wouldn't be able to hear her and that Missy kept quiet.
She just had to hold on for one minute. Jay would be there on time. Either way, she held the knife in front of her, ready to attack. But deep down, she knew she had no chance against the muscular man. Very easily he would be able to throw her down and take the knife from her. But she wouldn't go down without a fight.
She knew that if it came to that, she would have to try to scratch him to get his DNA under her nails. That way Jay and his team would have a better chance of catching this man.
The man got closer and closer to the pantry. Y/n's hands were shaking uncontrollably. She just wanted to close her eyes and discover that it was all a nightmare. But as much as she wanted to, this was reality and the fact that she could die that day became more and more real and scary.
She didn't want to die without kissing Jay one last time. Without calling her parents to tell them she loved them. Without telling her best friend she should take the first step and text the boy she liked. She wanted to be a mother. She wanted to marry Jay and experience an eternity with him.
But just as she was ready to run out with the knife pointed at him as soon as he opened the pantry door, the man was pulled aside. She heard a moan of pain followed by things falling to the floor. Y/n wanted to go out and see what was happening, but Jay's words echoed in her head: stay hidden until he came to get her.
And then came immense relief. She heard sirens. Before she could process everything that was happening, the pantry door opened. Y/n, in a moment of panic, got up and tried to attack, the person easily dodging and putting his hands up in defense. It was only then that she realized that the person in front of her was Jay, and the intruder was on the ground, bruised, and being arrested by another police officer.
Missy, with all the commotion, quickly ran up the stairs, probably hiding in the guest room until things calmed down. In turn, Y/n dropped the knife on the floor, her face contorting and her lips trembling. She began to cry, finally releasing all the panic and fear she felt. She was pulled into Jay's arms and into his chest.
With his arms around her, feeling his warmth and the movements of his chest, Y/n finally felt safe. Jay kissed her head, saying words of comfort in hopes that she would calm down.
"Jay…" she cried, grabbing his shirt with a very tight grip.
"I'm here, baby. I'm not going anywhere. It's okay. You're safe. Shh…"
Jay then just pushed her away slightly, holding her face with both of his hands. "Are you hurt?"
"No, I'm okay. I was so scared."
"I know, baby. But you were so brave, I'm so proud of you. And I'll never let this happen again, I promise." he gave her a small kiss on the lips, pulling her back to him. She would never disappear from his sight again.
"Hey, sweetheart." Gabby's voice broke the moment between her and Jay. Y/n she turned her head to look at the woman she adored so much, only now realizing that Severide and Brett were watching the scene from afar. However, she continued to grab Jay's shirt, ensuring he stayed close to her. "Do you mind if we go to the ambulance just to make sure everything is okay?"
A moment of hesitation. Brett, realizing the problem, stepped forward and with a gentle smile said, "Jay can come too."
So, Y/n nodded in permission, following the paramedics to the ambulance. Outside, there were two more police cars and neighbors were in front of their houses in their pajamas to see what was going on. Always under Jay's arm, Y/n waited for Dawson and Brett to do their assessment, ensuring that everything was really okay.
After ensuring that there was no need to go to the hospital, despite a lot of resistance on Jay's part, Y/n won the argument with the condition that the next day, Will would stop by to check on her. But at that moment, Y/n just wanted to sleep with Jay next to her.
Once in bed, the man had one arm over her protectively, making sure there was no space between them. "I will protect you until the end of my life. I love you."
"I love you too." she looked at him with just love in her eyes. Finding a more comfortable position, Y/n closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
But Jay stayed up all night. The most important thing is that Y/n recovers after that traumatizing night. And if she had any nightmares, he would be there to protect her.

Jay Halstead- All My Fault
Tumblr media
Trigger warnings- hospital, passing out, blood clot on the brain, near death
4 hours, just 4 hours left of my 12 hour shift left. I can do this.
For the last few days I’ve felt like I’m catching the flu but when I woke up this morning I felt so much worse and it’s only getting worse as the day goes by. If this was the start of my shift I would have gone home, but I’m so close to being done and then I have 4 days off to recover. So I’m going to power through the last hours.
“Feeling any better?” I hear my husbands voice. I look up at squint at the brightness off the lights, but I notice Jay looking down at me
“No”
“Why don’t you head home? We’re just doing paperwork” I glare at my partner, Adam
“Don’t jinx it” I groan making Jay chuckle
“In all serious babe I’ll take you home”
“No I’ll be fine” I give Jay a weak smile then return back to my paper work
“At least take some painkillers”
“Fine” I slowly stand up, but Jay places his hand on my shoulder and pushes me back down in my seat
“I’ll get them. You stay put” I give Jay a thankful smile. I look at my computer, but have to blink a few times as my vision blurs, probably due to this migraine that I’m having.
“How long has this migraine been bothering you?” Erin asks concerned
“Have had it a couple days now, just today it seems to be worse”
“Here” Jay comes back with some painkillers, a water bottle and a cereal bar “try and drink all of that and eat this. Might help. If your still not well tomorrow I’ll call Will to come over” I roll my eyes at Jay, but instantly regret it as the pain behind my eyes feels like I’m being stabbed. I take the pills and drink half the bottle then open up the cereal bar.
Finally my shift ends, Jay has another couple of hours, so Adam drops me off home
“You sure your going to be alright?”
“Yeah. I’m just going to have a bath try and eat some toast then head off to bed”
“Ok, but if you get worse please ring me and I’ll come over until Jay gets home”
“Thanks. See you” I wave goodbye and close the passenger side door, get my keys out of my bag and unlock my door. I give Adam one last wave and close the door behind me. Sighing I drop my bag on the floor, take my shoes off and head upstairs into the bathroom. Turning the tap on the blurry vision returns and I stumble backwards feeling dizzy. The last thing I remember is the way my head feels like it’s going to explode.
Jays POV
I return home expecting to see YN in bed asleep, or at least trying to. Heading upstairs I notice the bathroom light on and can hear the water running in the bathroom
“I’m home” I call out but don’t get a response. That’s when I notice the floor is wet. Panicking I open up the door and see my wife on the floor unconscious “YN? YN baby can you hear me?” Not getting a response I immediately take my phone out of my pocket and dial 911
“911 what’s your emergency”
“I need an ambulance at ‘address’ my wife is unconscious”
“How long has she been unconscious for sir?”
“I- I don’t know. I just got home. She’s been home for 3 hours on her own”
“Ok can you check her breathing for me?” I lean down and see if she’s breathing, thankfully yes
“Yes” I breath out
“Ok I have sent an ambulance to you, they should be with you in 5 minutes, keep checking her pulse and breathing until paramedics arrive”
5 minutes go by and they feel like the longest 5 minutes ever. Brett and Dawson arrive, I feel slightly relieved that the paramedics on shift right now are these two as I trust them the most with my wife
“Jay we’ve got her” Gabby says after I lift her onto the stretcher
“Can I ride with you?”
“Sure”
“What the hell happened?” Boden, YNs dad shouts walking over to me sat in the waiting room
“I don’t know. I just came home and.. fuck she looked…” I rub my hand over my tear stained face
“Does will know?”
“Yeah. He’s gone to see if he can find out what’s going on. Fuck I should have brought her here earlier, she wasn’t feeling good when she was at work”
“Jay, Wallace” I look up and see Will walking over to us nervously “I’ve spoken Abrams, she’s in surgery right now”
“What? Why? What’s wrong with my daughter?”
“YN had a blood clot on the brain. Has she hit her head recently?” both will and Wallace look at me. I think back to the other day, before her headache started
“Fuck this is all my fault. She hit her head on a job, she told me she was fine and I looked at her head, there was no bump so I didn’t….. fuck I should have forced her to….” I choke on my own words. This is all my fault.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Masterlist
The words had caught both Jay and Hailey off guard, the revelation that she knew their secret caused the blood to drain from Jay's face as he was at a loss for words.
She knew.
She knew.
This whole time, she knew, and she never said a word. She let herself suffer quietly.
He looked at the tears that streamed down her face, her wide eyes and trembling hands - he broke her. There was no other way to put it, she seemed fearful of even breathing in his presence.
Perhaps that was the worst part - Aurora was not only angry or disappointed. No, she was also terrified of being hurt by him. Again.
The question came out before he could stop it, making himself seem like an even bigger fool as everyone in the bar sent pitying looks towards Aurora, he asked, "how?" How did she know? Did she see them? Hear a rumour? See their texts?
If he could take back the question, he would.
If he could take back his actions, he would.
Aurora simply shook her head, the action causing her tears to fall more vigorously as a strained laugh escaped her. She stumbled backwards, heading towards the exit before Jay could stop her once more. On her way out, her heart heavy with unease and agony, she whispered an apology to Brett. But it seemed Brett and her friends were more concerned for the girl than the interrupted party.
Hailey's hand was still on his back. The feeling of her palm against him began to burn, and he wrenched himself away from her touch, away from her side. And he went after Aurora.
He pushed through the crowd, ignoring the looks of betrayal on the faces of his teammates, the look of disappointment in the eyes of his friends, and most of all, the petulant voice of Hailey who called after him in indignation.
Jay had found Aurora at her car, hands fumbling with the keys as she struggled to see through her tears. He raced towards her, his heart on fire at the sound of her muffled sobs. He reached around her, a hand wrapping itself around one of her own and her set of keys.
"You can't drive like this, Aurora. Baby, it's not safe. Please."
The feeling was so familiar to Aurora, his warm embrace and loving touch - a sensation she had begun to crave when she first gave into her heart's desires and let Jay into her life. And for a moment, she lost herself in the nostalgia, in the feeling of him being so close to her after feeling nothing for so long.
But the sound of a disgruntled blonde had followed Jay out of Molly's, the woman thrown off by the glares and judgements handed down to her from friends and colleagues. Hailey had left the bar hoping to convince Jay to come back home with her, to let her lick his wounds as he did her's. To reassure him that they would get through this and be stronger as one, and in time, everyone would forget what had happened and accept them.
It just so happened that Jay had his own idea of how things should play out, and they did not include Hailey.
The sound of her voice calling out his name brought back the memories of that night, of her lover pressed up against another, lost in the pleasures of his own unforgiveable actions. And just like that, Jay's touch had lost all its warmth.
Because the Jay that stood in front of her, a pleading grip on her hands, was not the Jay she had said yes to all those months ago - no, she had lost her Jay. And not when he had decided to sleep with Hailey, she had lost her Jay the moment Hailey joined the Intelligence Department.
As ignorant as he may be to it, and despite all the denial his heart may be full of, Jay Halstead was intrigued by Hailey, he has been since the moments she climbed up those stairs and helped them on their first case.
Aurora couldn't compete with that. Can't compete with that.
She wishes she could. Wishes her eyes shone like Hailey's so Jay could lose himself in them, wishes her hair was brighter than Hailey's so she could stand out like her, wishes she wasn't so extraordinarily plain that Jay's betrayal to her was so easy.
Jay's words snapped her out of her thoughts, his voice pushing her to pull her hand out of his grasp, but his grip was relentless - "I'm so sorry, Rory."
Aurora couldn't help the strangled cry that escaped her at the sound of that name, a name he would whisper into the darkness, hidden behind his confessions of love and admiration. She shook her head, "no, you're not. You're sorry you got caught."
Her voice was raw and exhausted. She had worn herself out holding all these feelings inside of her and pretending everything was okay. And now that the truth was out, she felt herself full of dread and weariness.
Jay shook his head vehemently, ignoring the way Hailey shuffled to his side, hoping to interject, "no. No, no, no. It was a mistake. I love you. I'm so sorry, there's no excuse but it was one time and I regret it every day."
The confession had deflated every ounce of ego Hailey had previously held, "you regret it?"
Hailey's eyes were painted in disbelief, but Jay met her head-on, his eyes empty as he regarded her - "I wish I didn't touch you that night. I wish I didn't let you in."
Hailey could feel her eyes well with tears, taking a glance towards the bar her heart beat faster in mortification when she saw that the three of them had an audience.
She tried to scrape up any sense of decency she had left, no longer able to look Jay or Aurora in the eyes as she cleared her throat, her voice oddly quiet, "I'm going to go."
As she left, she couldn't help but throw glances over her shoulder, hoping one of them would meet Jay's and the sight of her in anguish would cause him to come running back.
That didn't seem to be the case, as Jay's eyes were glued to the Aurora, who's face twisted in defeat - "if you loved me, you wouldn't have fucked her."
She would repeat it a hundred times if she had to, Jay betrayed her. That wasn't love.
"It was a mistake. I was drunk and she came over, she told me she liked me- she kissed me and- she, I don't know."
"That's not an excuse," her voice broke as she raised it an octave, "Jay you have had weeks to distance yourself from her. You've had weeks to pick the woman you say you love over the woman you fucked. And still, you spent every waking minute with her."
"I was scared," it was a hesitant confession, "I didn't know if you were angry at me because you found out or because I did something wrong. I- I couldn't make sense of it, any of it. But it was wrong of me, I know. I'm so sorry."
"Stop saying that! You keep saying you're sorry, but you've had weeks to be sorry. Why now, Jay? Why apologise now? Why tell me you love me now? Why pick me now?"
Jay couldn't find the words to explain, truthfully he didn't have the words to explain. It was a mistake, but his mistake hurt her in unimaginable ways. And he hadn't made amends after, he didn't tell her the truth, he didn't stay away from Hailey. No, he got pissed off at Aurora instead. God, he was an idiot.
Aurora's eyes flickered between his, as though she was searching for something within them. Her frustration grew when she could not find her answer, and her frustration turned to heartache.
She reached up with her free hand, cradling Jay's face gently. The action prompted him to free her other hand, hopeful she would not run from him. Hopeful she understood and hopeful she had forgiven.
Both her hands came to hold his face, her skin soft against the planes of his jaw and cheeks, her thumbs gently tracing the angles and lines on his face. She pulled him down towards her, leaning up to place her forehead against his, Jay's eyes closed at the sensation as hope simmered in his chest.
"Jay..."
The quiet whisper prompted him to open his eyes, to lose himself in the eyes of the girl who held his heart. Her eyes were drowning, so consumed by emotions, they were red and tired, full of unshed tears as the next words came to her, "was I not enough?"
Jay's eyes shut again, this time in anguish. Try as he might to stop them, tears escaped from his eyes and a stifled cry escaped as he spoke, "you're more than enough, my love. I'm the idiot, I'm the one who's not enough. You're everything to me and more, baby."
"Then why did you hurt me?"
Jay had no answer. It was true, what he had been saying all this time, he had seen Hailey as a friend. That night she came to his apartment, she was upset and in need of support and Jay had one too many beers that he didn't realise she wasn't talking about needing a friend until her lips had pressed against his own.
He lost himself in the feeling of a warm body, lost himself in the feelings of his own desires.
The thoughts tormented him, eating at him and taunting him because he had no excuse. No plausible reason for him to choose Hailey over Aurora. Yet, he still had.
He pulled himself away from Aurora, head shaking forcefully as he tried to get rid of the mocking thoughts. He heard a sniffle behind him, before a shaky sigh was released.
Aurora took his behaviour as an answer in itself, his inability to answer her was more telling than anything else. She composed herself, wiping her tears and steadying her breaths. A grim smile pulled at her lips, "it's okay. I get it. I do."
Aurora wasn't enough.
She unlocked her car and sat inside, reaching out to pull the door shut. She took one final glance at Jay, his back turned towards her as his shoulders were hunched over. Aurora could see how his body wracked at the silent cries he tried to hold back, his guilt overwhelming him.
Goodbye Jay.
***
Jay can't remember how he got home last night. His last traces of those hours began with a firm hand placed on his shoulder, and a glance up confirmed that it was Kevin.
Kevin looked disappointed in Jay's actions, but he could see his friend was in need of support. He couldn't leave Jay to wallow.
Guilt ate at Kevin at the thought, knowing that he and his friends had been more than happy to leave Aurora to her thoughts, and let her be consumed by whatever was troubling her.
Still, he would not repeat his mistakes.
Kevin guided Jay back to Molly's, encouraging him to take a seat. The occupants of the bar stared at him, various glares of anger and disgust were sent his way as he began to drink - one after the other. If it were up to Jay, he would've sat at Molly's drinking until the bar had closed, and when it had he would've gone to find another.
Instead, he was back at his place, waking up to a pounding headache and aching back as he laid astrew on the couch.
Jay moved slow, purposefully ignoring the memories of the night before as they seared themselves into his mind, forcing him to relive the pain and agony he had endured what feels like only moments ago.
Jay walked into his room, getting ready for the day. All the while, he ignored the bed that sat neatly behind him knowing the last person he had there with him was Hailey, on the night he wanted to forget the most.
He had tainted his most revered place, had wiped away Aurora's scent and defiled the place they were most affectionate to each other. The extra space of the bed was supposed to be Aurora's, and he had taken that from her - alongside her heart, which he had broken and burnt.
Time ticked by sluggishly as he drove to the department. His heart skipped beats as he ignored his throbbing head, but his hands felt numb and his head was swimming with dreadful thoughts and possibilities of what would happen when he saw Aurora in only a few short minutes.
Would she look at him with pitiful eyes? Would she make snide remarks? Would she be angry at him? Or would she continue to ignore him, as though he never existed?
The idea of such things happening continued to plague him, his body moving on its own accord as he found himself walking up the stairs to the Intelligence Department. It seemed he was the first one there.
Jay looked towards Aurora's desk, suddenly feeling uneasy and alarmed.
Aurora's desk sat bare, picture frames and trinkets removed leaving the desktop bare. He stumbled his way to the desk, hands almost twitching as he threw open every draw only to find them empty.
His heart lodged itself in his throat, he could feel a familar burn sting at his eyes as he shook his head in denial, "no..."
He continued to mumble to himself as he looked around the office, only for his eyes to land on a small white box on his desk.
The box couldn't have been bigger than the palm of his hand, and worry brewed within him as he began to pull the box apart to reveal its contents.
Inside sat a necklace, it shone gold in the artificial light and as Jay held it up in front of him he could make out the word inscribed on it - Aurora.
Jay had bought it for her a few weeks into them working as partners. It didn't take long for the pair to divulge their secrets and fears, and one of the most memorable ones had been when Aurora had confessed that after all those years she had spent living lives that were not her own, she was troubled by the idea she would no longer remember her name. Her biggest fear was losing herself.
Jay had bought her the necklace the very next day, he had told her as long as she had him he wouldn't let her forget who she was, he wouldn't let her lose herself and Jay promised, as he placed the necklace around her neck, that he would travel to the ends of the world and back to find her, if he needed to.
His hands clenched around the necklace, his face falling as he brought it close to his chest, his knuckles blanching at the force he held them with - she had left her necklace behind, had taken all her stuff.
It only meant one thing.
Jay could feel the urge to look into Voight's office, and a part of him was terrified to face the truth.
But he had to know. He had to know if he lost her, if she was well and truly gone.
And a glance into Voight's office had confirmed exactly that.
***
When the rest of the team had gathered in the office, they had stood frozen by the stairs. They were already worried about the scene they would find when they made their way into the office, wondering how the odd dynamic between Aurora, Jay and Hailey would now work.
It seemed they didn't need to worry about Aurora though, because in Voight's office sat Jay. Alone.
Jay had a haunted look painted across his face, his eyes swollen and red as they looked down passively at the desk, his hands pressed firmly against his chest, as though he was holding something close to his heart.
As the team mads their way closer to Voight's office, their concern for Jay grew stronger. Jay's eyes never strayed from the objects that laid in front of him - your gun, badge and letter of resignation.
You were gone.
You had left.
And it was all Jay's fault.
He made you feel like you were not enough.
Goodbye Aurora.

King of my Heart - Jay Halstead
Request: Hi! Can i request King Of My Heart with Jay Halstead?❤️
A/N: I just really like the idea of Jay with like a firefighter s/o. I think I've written like two other fics with him and a firefighter s/o, pretend they're all interconnected lol.
TS Anthology Series | One Chicago Masterlist
...is this the end of all the endings?...
Dating with your schedule was not easy. Finding time to actually connect with people outside of work was next to impossible, especially since you’d taken on some paramedicine shifts for Sylvie on your days off from the Firehouse.
While you were trying not to rush into things or make any assumptions about whether dating was the correct term, you’d been spending a lot of time with Jay in recent weeks. You’d volunteered to help at a city garden that Trudy helped organize and he’d been there too and you’d both sort of clicked (at least that’s how you described it to Stella later on because you were too hesitant to admit that Jay had pretty much stuck to your side that whole day and asked you for drinks immediately after).
“I just don’t wanna like...move too fast.” You explained, pulling your shirt over your head and fixing your hair, “like, okay...what if it’s just supposed to be like a casual thing and I make it this big thing in my head that it isn’t? Then I feel stupid and I can never show my face when he’s around.”
“Listen, if it’s casual, he’s the one who should feel stupid. You’re a total catch,” Stella replied, always ready to be your cheerleader when you were feeling insecure about something. “You are a total badass, you’re on Squad. You don’t need some guy and he’s lucky you’re giving him the time of day.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.”
“I would!” Stella insisted, “you don’t need him, don’t feel like you need validation or something.”
“I don’t. I’ll admit I’m okay single but, it is kinda nice having someone...I don’t know, want to put in the effort after a long shift. I mean, it’s not like we have easy jobs.” You replied, grabbing your duffel from the bench and slinging it over your shoulder. “I guess I just want some clarification. Are we dating? Is he thinking this could be something more serious? Is he even looking for something more serious?”
“Are you?” She deadpanned as you both made your way out of the locker room. Most of the other third shift had left already but Stella had hung back with you while you showered, mostly to listen to you have a mini-crisis over your budding relationship with Jay.
“I feel like I could be.” You shrugged, “that sounds stupid but like, sometimes I just look at him and think like, yeah I could do this every day of my life. That’s really fucking scary Stella...like...”
You trailed off as you made it out onto the driveway and saw Jay’s pickup parked out front. He was standing there on the passenger side, leaning against the truck and when he saw you he smiled. Stella nudged your ribs playfully before giving you a silent wave goodbye and heading to her car.
“Hey,” you called out as you got closer, “don’t you have work?”
“Caught a double yesterday, just got off like an hour ago.” Jay replied, “Figured if you don’t have plans this morning you might wanna get breakfast?”
“Oh my god yes, I’m starving,” you said, letting Jay take the bag off your shoulder and toss it in the back of his truck. “Herrmann has a new candidate and he offered to make dinner last night-” you shuddered and Jay laughed.
“That bad?”
“Terrible! And we ended up getting a call anyway so basically...no dinner.”
Jay shot you a sympathetic look over middle console, “Shit baby, I’m sorry.”
You felt yourself warm up at the sound of him calling you baby. You weren’t much for pet names but somehow hearing the word out of Jay’s mouth squashed all the worries you’d been keeping close to your chest.
“Jay!” You whispered, trying not to laugh and draw anyone’s attention, though most everyone in the house was asleep at this hour. Aside from Herrmann who had gotten stuck on night shift and was currently trying to keep his eyes open to reruns of Lets Make a Deal in the common room. He had ears like a hawk though and you knew he’d come snooping if he heard commotion. “We’re gonna get in trouble.”
Jay smiled against your neck, placing another kiss there before responding, “I don’t work here so technically...”
“Well don’t get me in trouble then!” You replied, unable to stop a laugh from escaping this time as you bumped into the washing machine.
It was nearly one in the morning when Jay had shown up at the firehouse, texting you and telling you to let him in the back door. He’d just gotten off work and you still had six more hours on shift but it was officially your six month anniversary and he was surprisingly sentimental. Although you weren’t sure that making out in the laundry room like two horny teenagers was exactly sentimental.
You didn’t get much time to consider anything at all because the siren went off, the overhead voice alerting the firehouse, “Truck 81, Engine 51, Squad 3, Ambulance 61.”
“I have to go,” you insisted, pulling away, “Jay, I have to go.”
“I know, I know.” He let go of you, stepping away so you could head out to the apparatus. He followed behind you, careful to stay out of the way, stopping at the Squad table.
“I knew I heard something!” Herrmann laughed, walking through the double doors with Ritter, “Sneaking around the firehouse like a couple a kids!”
You did your best to ignore Herrmann as you geared up, stealing one more kiss from Jay, “I’ll see you after shift?”
“Yeah, I’ll pick you up.”
“Get in the rig lovebird!” Tony called out the window and you rolled your eyes before climbing up into the back with him and Capp.
You couldn’t resist a last glance out the window as you pulled out into the street, Jay standing there with his hands in his pockets, watching you and grinning. By the time you got to the fire, you’d be clear headed and ready to work but until then, you’d let yourself be a little lovestruck.

Chapter Nineteen
Tumblr media
Right now, Mia is faced with the reality that this is only going to end one way.
“Why?” Daniel screams as he looms over her with a look in his eyes that she’s never seen in another person. “Why would you do that?”
“Why would I?” she seethes, fed up with the nice act she’s been giving. She is done being nice, and she won’t go down easy.  “Why would you! Why are you doing this?”
He shakes his head with a bewildered laugh, pacing back and forth. Daniel’s hands gesture wildly towards nothing in particular, “You think this has been easy for me? Not being able to have you? Having to watch you from afar, spending time with people who don’t give a fuck about you? Watching you parade around with those-those pathetic men? With that stupid detective like a fucking whore?”
She grits her teeth, fighting the urge to defend herself and her actions. “So, you killed people?”
“I already told you, I did it for you!” his eyes bug out of his head, the veins in his forehead pulsating with anger. The sickest part is that he believes what he’s saying. He truly believes that he did nothing wrong, that he was protecting her.
She pushes herself off the floor, biting back a wince at the pain that shoots through her forearms from the fall. “No, Sam, you did it for you,” Mia challenges, “You did what you did because you wanted to.”
Daniel frantically shakes his head, taking a slight step back as she rises to her feet, “Shut up.”
“I rejected you,” she presses on with a step towards him, “You saw something you couldn’t have so you decided to take it. You think that I could ever be with someone like you? That I could ever love someone like you? You’re a rapist and a murderer.”
“Shut up!” he shouts and in the next second, he pulls the gun from his waistband.
Breath hitching slightly at the gun pointed at her, Mia swallows her fear, “If you can’t have me, no one can?” She takes another step, closing the distance between herself and the weapon before arching a brow, “Come on, Sam, at least be original.”
They lock eyes, but she refuses to back down. “Do it,” she dares. She doesn’t stop until the cool metal is pressed against her forehead. If he is going to kill her, she is going to make him look her in the eye. The gun starts shaking in his hand, the sound of his quick breaths filling the small cabin. “Pull the trigger, Sam. Show me who you really are.”
His bottom lip quivers as tears pool in his eyes, and she can see the reluctance in his stare. They both know that he’s killed before, but it was different. He didn’t know those women; he didn’t care about them – as much as someone like him could care about anyone. She knows that when he looks at her, he doesn’t feel real love. Instead, he sees his mother. He sees someone that should’ve protected him. Someone that he wants to save.
Mia’s voice is quiet but unwavering when she speaks, “You’re nothing but a coward.”
Tears finally fall, streaking down his cheeks. His finger hovers over the trigger, but he doesn’t pull it. He hesitates. She sees the opportunity, and she takes it. As quickly as she can, she wraps both hands around the gun, forcing it out of her face. They struggle as she thrusts it towards the ceiling and the gun goes off, shooting several bullets into the ceiling. She uses all her strength to keep it from aiming at her, struggling to get it out of his grasp. Somehow, Mia manages to loosen his grip, not enough to take control of the weapon herself but enough to send it flying across the room.
Enraged, Daniel tries to wrap his arms around her when she turns away, but she whips her elbow back into his face. A sickening crack echoes off the walls as he yelps in pain, hands flying to his probably broken nose. Whipping her head around, her eyes search the room for the gun before spotting it a few yards away. She only makes it half a step before strong hands dig into the tops of her arms. He circles one arm around her waist to haul her against him. She screams as she struggles in his grip, nails scratching into the skin of his forearms. Mia kicks her legs in front of her, forcing a shift in weight that makes him lose balance. She twists from his grasp, but it backfires as she spins in the wrong direction. Daniel grabs her by the arms again. He pushes her back a few steps, lifting her again before slamming her down into the coffee table. Mia doesn’t have time to fight it or try to break her fall before her back crashes through the table, glass scattering across the wooden floor. The impact knocks the wind out of her, pain reverberating throughout her entire body as glass shards dig into her. She opens her eyes slowly, bringing a hand up to the pulsing ache on her forehead. When she moves her hand away, her blurry eyes see the sticky red liquid coating her fingers. Blinking desperately, her vision clears enough to see Daniel standing over her – two of him, but only for a second. His chest is heaving and her gaze trails down to his hands, swallowing hard as he flexes his fingers before curling them into fists.
“I didn’t want to do this, Mia,” he grits out, an urgent pleading in his voice, “I just wanted to make you happy. But you couldn’t let me, huh? You’re determined to be miserable.” He takes a menacing step closer, “Just know that you’re the one who made me do this.”
She knows what’s about to happen. He is going to strangle her like he did to those women. To Alana, Megan, Jill, and Lindsey. To Kyla. It can’t end like this.
Mustering up all the strength she can manage, all the anger for those women, for herself… Mia kicks out her leg into his groin as hard as she can, making him groan and fall to his knees. She rolls over, ignoring the pain as she crawls through the shattered glass and pieces of broken wood towards the gun. The tips of her fingers brush across the handle when a hand wraps around her ankle. She screams as Daniel drags her backwards, nails clawing into the floor for any sort of traction. Whipping her head over her shoulder, she uses her other leg to kick him in the face. His grip loosens when the bottom of her foot collides with his already injured nose, enough for her to regain the distance she lost. She barely manages to get to the gun, but she grabs it. Her fingers close around the handle, and she flips onto her back, holding the gun towards her attacker with both hands and pulling the trigger.

Frustrated, Jay slams the door of his truck before placing both hands on the roof, leaning against it. He hangs his head and closes his eyes, but he quickly opens them again at the flash of horrific scenes of what could be happening to Mia. They have finally made it to the edge of the woods surrounding Newton Lake, but that is where the trail ends. Reid has a solid few hours on them, and they have no idea which direction to go in. They don’t even know if they’re in the right place.
After giving her partner a few moments to himself, Hailey climbs out of the passenger side and walks around the hood. “I just talked to Wisconsin State Patrol and their Air Support Unit is sending a chopper. They don’t really know what they’re supposed to be looking for, but it can’t hurt to have an eye in the sky,” she pauses, “They’ll have a med evac on standby.”
Jay inhales a shaky breath at the thought of her being hurt, but he knows that they need to account for worst case scenarios. He feels so helpless, knowing that she’s out there and he can’t get to her. The one thing he should be able to do – save people – and he is grappling with the likelihood that he won’t be able to save her. His spiraling is interrupted as the rest of the team pulls up followed by several state patrol cars, including the canine unit.
“Hey,” Kim calls as she hops out of one of the cars, “I think I’ve got something.” She waits a moment for everyone to gather around, “Call it a hunch, but I asked Platt to look deeper into anyone from Reid’s past as Samuel Jennings. He went to his foster brother for help, so I figured it was worth a shot. His biological mother was named Arianna Jennings. After she paroled, it didn’t take long for her to fall back into her old ways. She got back into drugs, ended up marrying her dealer, and changed her name to Arianna Whelan. She died of a fentanyl overdose a little over a year ago, and her husband, Kenny Whelan? Never seen again.”
Impatient, Jay interrupts, “Kim, get to the point.”
She holds his gaze for a second, biting back a sassy retort because she knows what he’s going through right now. “Two months ago,” Kim arches a brow, “Kenny Whelan resurfaced and bought property in Wisconsin, with cash. Platt spoke to the real estate agent and the description matched Reid to a T. We got an address.”
Tumblr media
A blood-curdling yell escapes past his lips and Daniel falls back to the floor, a hand flying up to press against the fresh bullet wound to his shoulder. He stares at her with wide eyes, “You shot me!”
“Shut the hell up or I’ll do it again,” Mia retorts, keeping the gun aimed at him as best she can as she struggles to her feet. He continues to groan and cry in pain, trying to put pressure on the wound and stop the bleeding. She rolls her eyes at how pathetic he is, “Don’t worry, it won’t kill you. It’s through and through, minimal blood loss.” At the incredulous look he sends her way, she can’t help but smirk, “Lucky for you I had a boyfriend that was a damn good shot and a pretty decent teacher.”
He is clearly angered by the mention of who is obviously Jay, glaring daggers up at her. He feels weak at the shift in power and control but does his best not to show it. “Why? Why not just finish the job?”
“Because I’m not you,” her voice shakes as her grip tightens around the gun, “and you don’t deserve to get off that easy. You deserve to spend the rest of your life in a four-by-four cell. You deserve to spend every day of your life thinking about the ones you took. And for what?” She blinks back tears and narrows her eyes mockingly, “Because your mommy didn’t love you?” The comment clearly strikes a chord, pissing him off even more. Mia thinks over what her next move will be. She knows there’s a car that she could take to find help, but she can’t just leave him here and doubts she’ll be able to maintain control enough to get him to come with. He must have a phone – no one that technologically savvy can manage without some sort of device for long. A sudden loud noise from outside steals both of their attention, and it only takes a second before she recognizes the thrumming sound of a helicopter.
While she is distracted, Daniel sticks out a leg to trip her, pouncing as soon as she falls to the ground and wrestling the gun from her hands, sending another bullet into a wall, emptying the clip. She struggles against him, but his strength still overpowers the adrenaline coursing through her veins. After a few moments of fighting, he manages to wrap a hand around her throat and squeeze. The action catches her off guard and allows his other hand to join. She claws at his forearms and thrashes her legs, trying to gather enough force to flip them but his weight pins her down. His grip tightens, compressing her airway in the same way he did to the five other women he murdered. He never wanted it to be her neck beneath his fingers, but she just won’t stop.
Spots dance in front of her eyes as she battles to take in a breath, the fight quickly leaving her tired body. Crimson manages to catch her blurred gaze and in a last-ditch effort, Mia lifts an arm that feels impossibly heavy, digging her thumb into the bullet hole. He screams and loosens his hold enough for her to push him off with a gasping breath. She allows herself a second to regain her bearings before rolling onto all fours. Using the door as leverage, she gets to her feet. Wrapping her fingers around the knob, she twists but the door won’t budge. The lack of oxygen lingers, and she can’t think straight, hearing Daniel shuffling behind her. Glancing over her shoulder, he has managed to stand and starts towards her. Mia scans for something close and sees a coat stand within reach, so she grabs one of the umbrellas resting at the base. Turning, she juts the umbrella in his direction and against the wound. He rips it from her hand but still recoils in pain, buying her enough time to unlock the deadbolt and whip the door open. She runs.

On the brink | Part 2
Part 1
Tumblr media
Summary: When a case hits too close to home, is Jay able to keep it together or is he going to lose everything.
Trigger Warnings: best friend Jay, OC Lilian Grace Harper, asthma, protective Kevin, Adam and Antonio, metion of past child abuse, mention of dead soldiers, Jay being and asshole at some time, friends to enemies to lovers, idiots in love, canon divergence!
Word Count: 4.2k +
To say that the case hits Jay hard is an understatement. The last days Intelligence found out that all five of the dead soldiers were recently back from their deployment abroad and now ready for retirement, either because of an injury or because they wanted to start a new life back with their families back home.
They worked without so much as a break but now on Friday they seem to be missing important pieces of the puzzle. They have no clue, why someone would target the men or who their suspect could be.
"I made a coffee run. The finest coffee and the best muffins in the whole city." Lily shouts as she climbs up the steps to the Intelligence unit, slightly out of breath. The cold weather is taking a toll on her sensitive lungs and bronchia, but there's no time for her to ease up or rest. The case needs to be solved and that sooner rather than later. She also needs to be there for her partner Jay Halstead. The last days the mood clearly shifts. He got more silent and withdrawn. It took her a whole lot of persuasiveness to get him to go home the last evenings.
"Oh my God, you got me that sinful double chocolate muffin, sunshine? I love you. Marry me!" Adam jokes and hungrily takes the bag out of her hands.
"Wow, slow down cowboy. I'm not that kind of easy girl you used to date."
She takes a step to Jay's desk but he doesn't even look up when she sets down his steaming cup of coffee and the blueberry muffin he loves so dearly.
"I got you your favorite muffin and the best almond milk latte in the city." She softly says to her green eyed partner.
"Wouldn't it be better to work on the fucking case? Or do you want some more dead veterans to be found?" Jay looks up, his eyes furious. He instantly regrets his harsh words. But Adam's joking and Lily's sunshine-always-happy-people-pleaser-behavior sets off his rage. Her gaze drops down clearly hurt from the words of the most important person in her life. She whispers a silent "sorry" and sits down at her own desk, head hanging low.
"Hey, easy there tiger. We are all working our asses sore. No reason to let your anger out on Lilian."
"It's okay Ruz." she tries to calm the heated mood. Even if Jay's words hurt her she doesn't want any of her colleagues in the line of fire. She takes his words if it helps him to let off some steam, even if her heart is sore after that.
---
It was already very late on the Friday evening but the team is still working hard to get a breakthrough in their case.
"Okay, I want you all to go home. The snowfall is going to get heavier by the hour and I need my team in one piece. Drive safe, I see you all tomorrow." Voight announces. The whole day the snow fall was moderate and the streets were in somewhat good conditions to drive safe. But the forecast announced heavy snowfalls for the late evening and night and Voight doesn't want his detectives to drive in the bad weather when it's not necessary. It's not the first heavy winter in Chicago and he knows that the road maintenance is going to be overwhelmed with plowing all the snowy roads.
Lily was in the locker room just finished to call it a night when her partner enters the room.
"Lils? I'm sorry for earlier. I was unfair. But this case -" Jay starts but Lily interrupts him.
"Hey, it's okay. I can take it." She beams her signature smile at him. "What about a slow movie night? I missed my detective chuckles the whole week."
Did she just say 'my detective' oh Lord. Her cheeks redden a bit and so she tries to hide her embarrassment by rummaging in her locker.
"Yeah, why not. Come one, let's take my car." And with that they make their way to the parking lot.
---
But the evening takes another turn as Lily hoped for. She wanted to be close to Jay, to keep him sane and help him in case of a nightmare. She is afraid that his PTSD is flaring up, so it came in handy that Jay drove them to his house. It implicated that she would sleep at his and can keep a close on him. Well, that was the plan.
"Jay, please listen to me. All I wanted to say is that you have to take care of yourself. No matter how hard the case hits you. I'm worried and -" the smaller woman didn't have the intention to discuss with her partner. But it seems like everything she says is wrong. And so a harmless comment led to a huge argument.
"What do you want, Harper -" she shrinks into herself when Jay uses her last name, he never does that "-there are two dead Rangers, three dead veterans, their families waited for them to come home from their deployment, afraid they would die in war and now, when they were finally safe some lunatic is out there, executed them." With every word he gets louder and more upset. She gets it Jay is more involved in that topic than the rest of the team. But they all need to keep a clear head.
"Of course I get that Jay. But- "
"You get NOTHING, Harper. In your rainbow sunshine world is no place for the real world. There are people out there fighting for our country and an asshole is killing them. You have no fucking idea." Jay pokes his finger into her shoulder to make his point clear.  "Please go, I want to be alone." The taller man turns around missing how he had hurt his best friend.
A silent tear is slipping down Lily's cheeks. Rainbow sunshine world? She is far from living that life. And she knows exactly how hard it is to have someone in the military and to lose a close person to the terribleness of war. She grew up in the system, her parents not able to take care of the cute little girl with the long strawberry blonde hair and the warm lovely eyes. When there was finally a foster family for her she hoped for a new loving family. Parents, who would love and take care of her. But it was far from a loving family. Her foster father seemed to hate her with all his might. Her foster mother always looked away when her husband took out his anger on their foster daughter. Whenever Lily did something wrong he banned her in the garden shed for the night, without food, a warm blanket or even a flash light. One day she accidently broke a vase. It wasn't an expensive heirloom or even a peculiar beautiful piece of art. It was just another reason for her foster father to ban her into the cold and dark shed. She had to stay there for five days, with only a little food and water in just her thin pajamas. In these five days she developed an acute bronchitis but the cruel man forbid his wife to take Lily to the doctors. Thanks to him she's suffering from bad asthma today. But there was one person on earth who seemed to be in her corner. Her foster brother, he was the biological child of her foster parents. He was eight years older than Lily, but the cute and shy girl instantly wrapped the older boy around her finger. Whenever he was at home he defended her and protected her from their father. He was her knight in shining armor. He always brought her to bed even read her a bedtime story. These are the only good memories she has from her childhood. But when he turned eighteen he went to the Army. The goodbye was heartbreaking for both of them but when the family was informed that he died in the line of duty, the real hell started for Lilian. She missed her foster brother dearly he was the only person who had ever loved her, who was friendly and gentle with the small girl. Ever since that fateful day her foster father got even more brutal. Hardly a day went by without hitting her, shouting at her or punishing her. So yes, she knows how hard it is to lose a loved person to the military.
She puts on her coat and her shoes and without a goodbye she leaves Jay's house.  As she stands in his driveway the whole situation settles in. Her best friend, her safe haven, her anchor just kicked her out. Now she's stranded in his neighborhood, standing in the heavy snowfall of the Chicago winter without her car. To get an Uber in this snow chaos was impossible, the radio stations announced the whole evening that the people should stay at home and not drive their cars, that the streets would probably not ne plowed until the morning. So her only option is to walk home. She lives not too far from Jay's house but under these circumstances she would need more than 30 minutes to get to her house. She didn't plan on staying too long outside today so she only has her thin winter jacket on. What a fucking disaster.
As she walks the unusual deserted streets of Chicago silent tears are making their way down her flushed cheeks and blurring her vision. Under normal circumstances she would be highly alerted, she is a detective for crying out loud and she knows what persons are out in the dark in the streets of Chicago but heartbroken and deeply hurt by the man she calls her best friend she couldn't care less about possible threats looming around the dark corners of the Chicago streets at night.
---
When she finally arrives at the front door of her house, her jacket, her shoes, hell, everything is soaking wet. The snowfall increased during her walk home and wetted her whole clothes and her hair.
Utterly exhausted and out of breath she takes off her clothes at her front door to not get her hard wood floor soaking wet. She's shivering so violently and her fingers are so stiff from being in the cold for more than 30 minutes that she has difficulties to open the zipper of her jacket and her trousers.
Finally, stripped down to her underwear and stumbles into her bathroom. The snowflakes melting in her hair are wetting her skin once more cold drops of water are running down her back, making her shiver even more. A painful sob is tumbling out of her mouth, utterly exhausted she sinks down on the cold tiles of her bathroom floor. A familiar feeling is spreading through her chest.
The room is filled with Lily's painful wheezing. It feels like someone is squeezing her ribcage and choking all the air out of her lungs. With shaking hands she rummages through her bathroom cabinet. She needs her asthma spray and that fast. Tears are still blurring her vision making the search for her medication even harder. Black spots are starting to dance in her vision when she finally finds her spray. Fortunately she manages to administer herself the asthma medication. Her chest feels painfully tight and she hopes that the medication is kicking in soon to help open up her airways. She tries desperately to get more air into her lungs but the oxygen deprivation is making her more lightheaded. Violent coughs are tumbling out her mouth mixing with sobs and whimpers. She closes her eyes in an attempt to calm herself down. The last thing she wants right now is to call some of her friends for help. She can do this alone, even if this is one of the worst asthma attacks in a long time. Slowly she can breathe easier and her chest isn't as tight as before. She lets herself slump against the bathroom door, drowsy from the medication and utterly exhausted from the huge emotional pain she suffered this evening.
When she's sure that she can stand up without fainting Lily makes her way over to the shower, she needs to warm up her slightly hypothermic body. On shaky legs which feel like Jell-O, she lets herself slide down in the shower, too weak to stand up any longer. When she sits under the warm spray the whole evening, the argument with Jay, his harsh words and her bad childhood memories are constantly replaying in her head, so once again she can't stop the tears from falling down her flushed cheeks.
---
Lilian wakes up before her alarm has the chance to play it's merciless blaring. When she finally had the strength to make her way from the shower to her bed it was already around midnight. But despite her physical and emotional exhaustion she couldn't find sleep. Jay's hurtful words are still lingering in her tired brain. But instead of being mad at Jay, she questions herself. Was her support for her best friend and partner not enough? Why did she fail the most important person in her life?
Taking a look at the clock on her nightstand, she decides to get up and have an early start, because sleep would definitely not come anymore. Why wasting any more time when she can use the early morning and start working on the case. She owes her partner that much.
---
Fortunately the Chicago streets are finally plowed so she can take an Uber to the precinct, with her car still there. As she coughed painfully for the fifth time a not amused Uber driver is watching her in the rearview mirror, probably afraid she is going to spread her germs further and infect him with that nasty cough. Her breathing gets labored and wheezing by every cough and she's thankful that she has her asthma spray at hand.
Lily prays a silent prayer that her breathing is going to improve until she arrives at the precinct and that she can suppress the painful coughs the last thing she wants is to worry her colleagues.
---
"Hey Lils!" The young woman hears a familiar voice holler her name.
"Hey, Adam. You're early, what a rare sight." she turns around and gives her colleague a warming smile.
"You came with a cab? Didn't you leave with Jay yesterday?" Adam asks as he's catching up to his female colleague.
Lilian really hoped that she could enter the precinct without anyone noticing that she had to take an Uber to work, but now Adam busted her. But instead of telling him the real reason for her taking a cap, she tries to fool him with a little white lie.
"Yeah, but I forgot my go-bag, so I needed to make a stop at my house in the morning, you know."
Her heart aches when she once again thinks about the real reason. That her partner, her best friend kicked her out yesterday. That she had to walk 30 minutes in the cold Chicago winter which gained her a nasty cough and a tight feeling in her chest.
When both detectives enter the Intelligence Unit the green-eyed detective was already working at his desk. Seems like most of them have an early morning today.
Lily mumbled a nearly inaudible 'Good morning' in Jay's direction, but he only nods his head, not in the mood to call it a good morning.
Of course Jay felt bad after he kicked out the strawberry blonde woman out of his house in the middle of the night when a snow storm is hitting the city, but he's so deep in his rabbit hole. He can apologize later, can't he? They all have to work a bit harder and soon they can figure out the asshole and lock him up for good. Then there's enough time to make it up to Lily. Just a small voice in his head tells him: when it's not too late then.
Lily goes straight to the locker room. She puts her still a bit damp jacket and her purse away. When she turns around she sees her Go-bag sitting on the bench. In fact she took her bag to Jay's yesterday but she forgot it at his house after he kicked her out. And now, her partner just dumped her belongings on the bench in the locker room. Not even that decent to give it to her personally, let alone talk to her. She feels her eyes tearing up once again. With a heavy heart she lets herself down on the bench, trying to stifle her whimper. She can't just sit here and cry, she has a job to do. She is a detective for crying out loud.
The familiar feeling of someone sitting on her chest is spreading in her ribcage. A painful cough is followed by her attempt to take a deep breath but it's more a wheezing than a healthy oxygen filled breath. She jumps up and drags herself, on shaky legs, to her locker. She needs her asthma spray. With trembling hands, she gets her spray out of her purse. In a hurry to not get that attack as bad as last night and worried some of her colleagues will catch her she inhales two puffs of the medication. It makes her always a bit drowsy, but at least the painful tight feeling in her chest is easing up real fast this time. She grips the door of her locker in a tight grasp, knuckles turning white, to keep her body in the standing position. This is going to be a fucking long day.
---
"You look like hell. Everything okay?" Antonio asks the smaller woman as both are waiting for the coffee machine to finalize the brewing process.
"Gee, thanks Toni, that's what a girl wants to hear."
Unfortunately Lily can't suppress the wet cough that makes its way up her tight airways. Antonio looks rather worried when he hears the young woman coughing.
"Oh, just chocked on that cold coffee." Lily tried to lighten the mood.
"Voight wants us at the board." Kevin tells his colleagues from the doorway of the breakroom. Saved by the bell, Lily hurries out of the Intelligence's small kitchen to meet the other detective in the bullpen. Hopefully one of them has a lead.
Antonio is hot on her heels and when they both get to their white board the others are already there.
With a quick glance she looks at Jay. The crease between his eyebrows and his stiff body posture is giving away how tense he his. Lily is worried for her best friend, in any other situation she would hug him, or squeeze his hand gently, just a small physical touch to tell him without words that she's there for him, no matter what. But today she's afraid. She takes the place beside Adam in a safe distance to her partner. The taller detective looks down to Lilian and winks at her squeezing her shoulder. It's a small gesture he often does. As annoying as he can be, he has a big heart and Lily has definitively a big place in Adam Ruzek's heart. Of course he instantly saw that something is up with Lily when he saw her in the morning getting out of the Uber. She was slower than usual, she looked tired, her eyes a bit red and puffy. He has the suspicion that something happened yesterday at Jay's house. Their whole interaction this morning was odd. Even when Jay had a bad day in the past, he would always talk to Lily, she would turn his sour mood into a better one. Heck, she is their sunshine. When she enters a room, it's glowing. But today was different, she seems like she lost her glow. Jay didn't even say 'good morning' to her. They didn't talk the whole morning. He has to keep a close eye on his friends, but especially on the younger woman. She looks pale, exhausted and far from healthy.
The team collects everything that they had found or rather not found. There's still no hot lead but they were able to dig a bit deeper into the history of the five dead soldiers. For some minutes Lilian tries to stifle the great urge to cough or clear her throat, but when Voight finally explains their next steps, she can't hold it any longer. The young coughs painfully into her armpit. Instantly the whole room grows silent, the attention of her colleagues on her. She whispers a quiet sorry and looks up at their boss to encourage him to go on.
"Everything okay, Harper?" Voight asks his youngest detective.
"Yeah, just a small cough. Everything’s all right." Lilian tries to reassure her boss that she's fit for her and her partner's designated task.
The older man lifts an eyebrow before he makes a decision. "That didn't sound like a small cough. Harper and Halstead, you stay here. Evaluate the phone numbers which were logged in in the area where the bodies were found. Kevin, Antonio, go to the third victim's wife, we need her statement. Ruzek, you're going to observe the warehouse where all victim's mobile phones were logged in -" but he doesn't get the chance to finish his sentence when a rather upset Jay interrupts him.
"Because she has a cough, we have to stay here? I need to talk to the wife, hell."
"HALSTEAD, my office. Harper, go with Ruzed, help him with the stakeout."
---
Voight was never happy with tensions between their detectives. But with his soft spot for the strawberry blonde woman, he doesn't let Jay's comment slight. He was surprised with his reaction. Usually Jay was highly protective of his partner. Her coughing her lungs up would have been a reason for him to stay at the precinct with her voluntarily. Hank notices the bad mood and the high tension between the two partners the second he entered the Unit in the morning. He saw the dark circles around Lily's eyes, her pale face and her red eyes. But Jay's reaction now was the last straw for him. And so he finds himself shouting at the younger detective that his behavior towards his partner is nothing he ignores. Hopefully Jay will get some common sense now. Voight likes the dynamic between Halstead and Harper. He knows that there is a very thin order between being partners and best friends and lovers. But he accepts this dynamic of course he would never admit that. But he's thankful for Lilian Grace. She saved Jay from his demons she brought a light, friendly and tender mood into their unit. The rest of the team is also highly protective of her and thankful for her being their addition.
---
The whole drive to the warehouse was painfully silent. Lily clearly shocked by Jay's outburst, the second one in 12 hours. When a silent tear slipped down her cheek she harshly wiped it away. Afraid that Adam had seen this. When he noticed it, he didn't say a word.
So now they're sitting in front of the warehouse in their SUV, hidden in a parking lot behind a tree and waiting for movements. Lily is growing more tired every passing minute. It gets harder for her to keep her eyes open.
Usually a stakeout with Ruzed was funny, entertaining and even if there's nothing happening it never gets boring with her older colleague. But today was different. Adam seems to be brooding over something. Not one joke was told by the bearded detective.
In fact Adam is mad. No scratch that, he is furious. He can't believe how Jay treated Lily earlier at the precinct. He needs to talk to him he can't talk to her that way. She is the best thing that ever happened to their unit. She's friendly, cute, intelligent, strong, hell she would probably the best woman for Jay.
He turns around in the driver seat and looks at the small woman beside him. "Are you cold?"
"No no, I'm good." Such a short answer from the strawberry blonde was rare.
He grabs her hands which are lying in her lap "Geez, Lilian Grace. Your hands are deathly cold." And with that he stretches his upper body between the both car seats to get something from the backseats.
"Here, time to warm you up, sunshine." He gently tucks her in a blanket he always has stored in the backseat of his SVU.
With a silent "Thank you, Ruz." Lily thanks her colleague. When she's honest the cold from her late night walk is still deep inside her bones. The whole day she has ice cold and trembling hands, so she’s happy that Adam has a blanket in his car.
Because of her shitty night in which a fitful sleep didn't come, her eyes grow more tired the longer she watches the warehouse. They haven't seen one soul in nearly two hours. So when she can't suppress her exhaustion anymore her eyes fall shut and her body finally relaxes. With a sad and worried look in his eyes Adam glances at his female friend. He tucks the blanket one more time closer to her shivering body and gives her soft kiss on her temple. "Sleep, Lily. I can do this alone. I got you."

Summary:when a Girl from Jays past he thought he would never see again shows up unexpectedly,he sees her in a new light from the girl he once knew, realizing his feelings for her that have always been there.
—————————
You always believed that once you came back everything would be amazing, expect the nightmares of the life you always knew haunted you.Peter stone a prosecutor with the states attorneys office had been the only source of family and familiarly you have had over the past few months working alongside of him.
Your brother Greg who was always known as mouse had made his way back to the rangers where he was currently serving, you never bothered to reach out to Jay even though he was just as great of a friend to you as he was with mouse.
There had been multiple consistent nights where you hide into his chest when he was sleeping knowing he was having a hard time with everything that you both had seen, though you played it off always like it was you struggling so he felt better about it.
The first words between you and Peter, you never had gotten out of your mind, having always thought about it when things were getting dark in your mind when he came to your house late at night to talk to you about a case that was driving him inside.
“You talk about your pain like it’s all alright, but I know that you feel like a piece of you is dead inside.”
Jay looked up as he leaned back in his desk chair, looking the clock as he yawned to himself before he had got up to make his way into the break room.Pouring himself a cup of hot coffee as he saw out of the corner of his eye,Erin lean against the counter looking over at him.
“What’s on your mind,Jay?” Erin asked him with a small smile that was laced on her face.
“Nothing, just thinking about this case that we were working on,I just really hope that these families can get justice now,an we can bring them even a small bit of peace.” He told Erin as he ran his hand over his face before he took a drink of his coffee.
“Yeah” Erin agreed quietly as Voight leaned into the doorway so they could hear him while also telling the others that the case was being presented at four o’clock and that it was mandatory for everyone to be there but it would look the best if everyone was.
As they sat down in the court room, the air felt thick as the sobs of the families drowned out the noise of the small thuds of people sitting down and the quiet chatter.
“Who’s on our side?” Jay leaned over a little as he whispered to Antonio who was sat on the other side of him and Erin.
“Stone” Antonio told him as he sat back having recently started working for Peter Stone after he had came to the district asking Antonio to come work for him.
As the case had started to play out,Jay thought the back of the girls head presenting with stone looked familiar, the way her hair was slightly pulled back and the way her stance was.
The judges voice echoed in the court room as a voice called out before he was going to make his choice,Jay felt his heart clench as he heard her voice.
“Men are strong” her voice was soft and quiet but it still carried in the court room.
“They are the hunters, the fighters” there was a small level of sass between your words as they slipped out.
“They sit in bars tossing back drinks calling out men about their sexual concourse.” Your shoulders shrugged as you leaned against the table infront of stone.
“Oh this is gonna get good” Antonio said under his breath as Jay was confused seeing the quiet girl he knew talk without a second thought.
“That’s what makes them masculine, that’s what makes them men?” You started to question your own words as the nervousness bubbled up knowing people’s eyes were on you.
“You get into a fist fight,it’s okay it will make you a man” you sighed quietly to yourself.
“You grab a girl from behind, that’s what men do” you slightly sassed as you stood back to your feet.
“But what if you cry?” You asked the judge in a way.”or show empathy,or god forbid you can’t shoot a little rabbit.well I’m sorry you just don’t deserve to be my son” you found yourself turning to look back at the father.
“The problem is,Sam is johns son.” You looked down before looking back at the judge.
“The problem is,Sam just wanted to make John proud, the problem is John wasn’t preaching strength,he was teaching power over others and that’s not being a man, that’s being a criminal.” Your words left your lips faster then you realized as you looked back at stone nervous as he guided to you that you were doing okay.
The judge had deemed to see fit that the father and son where both accused and accounted for the murder of seventeen college girls.
Before Jay could find a way to talk to you,he watched as stones had rested on the small of your back and guided you out of the court room protectively in a fatherly way.
Everyone had found themselves at Mollys drinking and talking expect when Erin kept glancing at Jay sensing there was something off with him he had got up,with her following him out of Mollys.
“Jay will you just tell me,what’s going on?” Erin asked him as she let her hands drop to her sides.
“Nothing I just really need some sleep” Jay told her as he headed home. Not expecting to see Antonio and you walking together to your place, something seemed wrong as Antonio walked beside you trying to get you to eat as you nudged him hand away from you.
Jay found himself parking across the street watching as you went inside and as Antonio walked off leaving your porch.
He watched as you living room light came on and watched seeing as your shadow threw what was your coat over the couch, seeing your shadow disappear.
He found himself wondering how you had been,he hadn’t seen you in so long an you seemed to be doing so good for yourself as he watched the kitchen light turn on and his heart shattered watching as your poured what looked like whiskey into a glass, before you chased it down.
It was like someone else was in control of his body as he made his way up the steps to your porch knocking on the door, seeing you when you opened your door the first button of your button up shirt was undone and you seemed like you were to tired to even bother changing.
He didn’t realize he hadn’t been talking as he looked over you seeing his best friends little sister who had grew up so much, before he knew it he had realized that you both were inside of your house.
He had pressed you gently up against the wall as he kissed you passionately, letting his hands wrap around you protectively as if some part of him thought he was gonna lose you again.
After he broke the kiss he looked back meeting his eyes with yours as both of your eyes softened when they met each other before he found himself cupping your jaw with one hand kissing you deeper as he let his hand slid up your shirt just to rest on your side feeling your bare skin with his hand.
Knowing in that moment you were and had always been the girl he wanted to spend the rest of his life with as he hard the quiet whimper fall from your lips as he picked you up feeling as your hand tangled in his hair.

You were awaken by the sound of a door shutting, then the sound of keys landing in their bowl by the entrance. You were use to him coming home late, would even fall back asleep with ease knowing he’s finally home, and safe. However, tonight, it was different. Something inside of you knew, you didn’t know how to explain it other than, you knew. You hear his boots walking down the hall towards your shared bedroom, then the sound of your door gently opening and again hearing him making his way towards the restroom.
You turn to lay on your back and looked to your left where your bathroom was. You can see his shadow from underneath the doorframe. After a minute or so, maybe less, you slowly get out from under the covers and make your way over with bare feet. Once within reach with the door, you slowly turn the handle and pull, revealing a hunched Jay by the sink. Through mirror you can see the his eyes are tightly shut as his head hung low and from the way his entire frame shook with each quick puff he would try and intake, you knew right away.
He was having a panic attack.
“Breathe,” You calmly tell him as you turn him around and grab onto his hand to place it on your chest, “Breathe with me Jay,”
Panicked, wide, blue orbs stare at you, but manages to calm his breathing awhile leaning heavily against the sink and keeping his hand on your chest.
“Breathe Jay. You’re safe,” You softly call out to him, reminding him he’s home, here with you,
Just by his panicked attack you knew the case must’ve been hard, he normally never has an attack after work, if he does then he’s able to control it, but from the way his breathing is coming out in harsh puffs you know it was a tough day and triggered it much harder this time.
One hand still plastered on your chest while the other gripped tightly on the sink, your own hands covered the one on your chest as you watch him try and take in breaths through his nose. They were shaky inhales, making him lose concentration on calming down but as long as he kept listening to your voice as you assured him and kept his eyes on you as you too do the breathing exercise with him, he’d soon get over the attack.
After a good 10 minutes the panic attack subsided, leaving an exhausted Jay leaning heavily against the sink, but it wasn’t long for the tears to start slipping down his face. You were right there once again, assuring him with soft words, letting him engulf you into his arms as he hides his face in the crook of your neck. Every now and then you’d feel warm droplets fall on your shoulder, but you didn’t care, all you did was hug him tighter and continue with your soothing voice.
“Let’s go to bed Jay,” You whisper, he nods but doesn’t let you go, just simply holds you tighter,
A soft faint chuckle escapes from you but you don’t do anything, just remain in his arms until he’s ready to let you go and get in bed, which didn’t happen for another five minutes, but once he did he immediately engulfed you in his arms again once in bed.
“I love you,” He mumbles against your forehead,
You smile, burying your face deeper into his chest, “I love you too,”
He didn’t fall asleep right away and neither did you. Yes your eyes were closed, but you weren’t exactly falling asleep, not yet at least. His blue eyes were faced up towards the ceiling, mind wondering about, but the way your fingers were lazily drawing shapes against his skin kept him from wondering back to the dark side. Eventually, you began dozing off, your fingers were slowly coming to a stop every once and a while, but what finally made you go to sleep was the soft faint snores coming from Jay.
Slightly opening your eyes you lay still to hear it again, when you hear his faint snore once again, indicating he has fallen asleep, a small smile tugs on the corner of your lips. Softly pecking his bare chest, you rest your head on him once again before slowly drifting away into a peaceful sleep with the love of your life in your arms.

Punisher Pt. 15
Fifteenth part of Punisher.
This is a Chicago PD/Fire imagine with an original character. I don’t own any of the plot points or characters from the show. Also, it doesn’t follow any particular season or sequence in the shows.
Series Summary: Josephine (Jo) never expected to find support and pure love when she left Los Angeles. She ran away to Chicago and was content with living an insignificant, hidden life. But everything changes when she walks into Molly’s to get a job.
Josephine (OC) x Jay Halstead
The italicized lines are internal thoughts of the character.
Warnings: mentions nightmares, PTSD, stalking

“It’s only been a week Jo, you don’t have to go back. Hermann and Stella made it very clear to take all the time you need,” Jay sits on the bed watching me grab clothing for my shift at the bar.
“Jay being here isn’t helping me either. You’re back at work and I just sit here with my thoughts. It’s doing more harm than being back.” “I can get the day off tomorrow, why don’t you take one more day and I’ll go with you?” I walk over to Jay and rest my hands on his shoulders. This man has done everything in his power to help me work through my endured trauma. It doesn’t matter if its holding me after a nightmare, talking me back to reality when my mind drifts off, or just touching me so I know I’m not alone.
“I can’t sit here another day, the longer I stay away from the bar the more it becomes evil and scary,” I cup the side of his face and run a finger over his stubble which has gotten a bit long over the last few days. “Thank you for your offer, but I have to do this. Hermann and Stella will both be there. I’m sure Kelly and a few of the guys will be there too.”
Jay kisses my palm quickly.
“Call me if you need anything, okay? And you’re still healing and will be for a while so light work.”
“Okay dad,” I laugh. Jay rolls his eyes before standing to kiss me. I thought it would be a quick peck but it’s slow and methodical. When I look into his eyes after I could tell he was just as nervous as I was about going back to the bar. “It’ll be okay,” I reassure.
“I know,” his voice is quiet. He kisses my forehead before walking to pack up the last items for work.
****
Luckily, Jay was able to go into work late so he could go with me to the bar. I kept trying to tell him it was unnecessary, but once I saw it I realized I was very wrong. Jay grabbed my bag and my hand and together we crossed the sidewalk to the door of Molly’s. The outside of it seems different now, almost as if there is a fog around Molly’s. I had been trying to detach myself from Molly’s and all the events that happened that I might have made it the monster in my story.
“Hey, you got this,” Jay whispers. His deep blue eyes bring me back, like a light glow within the darkness.
“Jo!” Stella yells as she walks closer to Molly’s. Stella, another light in the darkness. “God, I’ve missed you.” She hugs me gently once she’s close enough.
Now between two of my best friends, it feels easier to breathe.
“I’ve missed you too Stella. Thanks for filling in for me.”
“No need for thanking, I’m gonna head in. Take all the time you need,” It’s obvious that she means every word.
“We’ll follow you in actually,” once again in between my two best friends I walk through the threshold of Molly’s.
“Hey ladies!” Hermann yells behind the bar. A quick flash of Rob taking multiple swigs of whiskey while throwing around his gun flashes through my mind, “Jo do you think you’d be able to help me with receipts today?” Hermann’s voice breaks through the memory.
“Yeah absolutely,” I let go of Jay’s hand for the first time to go to the office and drop off my stuff. When I come back Stella is taking the chairs down and wiping down the tables. Hermann and Jay are talking in hushed tones over the bar counter, no doubt about me.
“Jay, you should get to work. I’m not having Voight on my ass for you being later than you already are,” I joke as I near the two.
“Call me if you need anything, even if it’s just to talk, okay? And seriously take it easy, your stitches and ribs are still healing,” Jay babbles.
“We’ll make sure she barely lifts a finger,” Hermann interjects.
“See? We’re good. I’ll keep you updated,” Jay hesitates before kissing my temple and saying his goodbyes. Once Jay is out of the bar a panic sits in my stomach, but I move to help Hermann.
“Jo, a scotch on the rocks and red wine for booth 5,” Stella passes along. I quickly pour the drinks and move to deliver them to the correct table. My legs immediately halt when it registers what the booth is. It’s the same booth I cried for Jay, where I began to mourn a man that thought I was responsible for his imminent murder. The same booth I was beaten into submission, where I came to terms with my own looming death.
“Jo, I got it,” Kelly appears and grabs the glasses from my hands to take them to the table. I can feel my face growing hot from embarrassment and frustration. I begrudgingly walk back to the bar and start to clean glasses. I try to be gentle even though I’d much rather scream and shatter the glasses against the far wall.
“There’s been a few times we’ve had to go back to places after rescues. Not all of our fires are at homes or warehouses. I’ve had to go to a fire at my doctor’s office once,” Matt talks to me.
“Matt, I’m sorry, but I’m really not in the mood.”
“Just hear me out, I promise it’s going somewhere,” he smiles. “The fire at my doctor’s office was bad, one of my first really bad fires. There were multiple casualties, the roof was caving in, we almost lost some of our team. When it came time to go back, I didn’t think much of it. But when I walked through the door all I could see was the fire and all I could think about were the people we almost lost and those we did. I walked out, I couldn’t stay. Later, Mouch had told me that if I continued to avoid the places we had bad fires at, then I’ll have no where to go. He told me that when I think of the painful memories to think of ones that bring me joy. For example, I met my then girlfriend at that doctor’s office, she was a drug rep. Long story short, there is a lot of happiness and good in this bar, a lot of joy around you here. I can’t begin to relate to what happened to you here. We’re all here for you and even if that’s to bring up a good memory for you here. Like maybe that time you had a chugging contest with Otis and you crushed him? Everyone lost their minds and Otis was convinced you cheated. That all happened in that booth.”
It’s true, that all happened early on to me starting at Molly’s. Otis was talking trash about having the tolerance of an ox and that even though he didn’t go to college, he can out drink anyone in those drinking games. Almost everyone was here between the fire, PD, and med crew. Maggie was thoroughly impressed and made it clear that she was behind me from the beginning. The night was one of my favorites at Molly’s, it was one of the first times I felt accepted in this large family.
“Thanks Matt,” he nodded and walked back to his table with Silvie.
Matt’s advice became a standard practice the rest of my shift. All the painful and terrifying memories from having the bar being overtaken can’t be undone in a night, but the pit in my stomach became less and less as the night went on. A lot of the crew came into Molly’s throughout the day, no doubt to help keep some friendly faces at various spots in the bar and I’m grateful.
“Hey! Sorry I’m late, Adam drives like an old lady.”
“It’s called defensive driving you dick,” Adam rolls his eyes as he walks past.
“Don’t worry about it, you want a beer?”
“I honestly would really love to go home, can you leave?” “Yeah, I’ll go grab my stuff,” I head to the office to gather my things and say a quick round of goodbyes before heading out of Molly’s with Jay.
“So how’d it go?”
“A lot better than I thought. There’s too much good that’s happened in my life at Molly’s for that day to destroy it.”
“We did meet here,” Jay adds.
“We had our first kiss here too. Plus, I’ve humbled Will on numerous occasions at Molly’s,” Jay laughs and opens my car door for me.
“I’m proud of you,” I lean over and kiss him.
****
As the days passed it got easier and easier to go to Molly’s. The memories of a gun pointed at my head were pushed away by memories of Jay and I dancing after closing and playing an intense game of slaps with Cruz. Or Stella whipping out on the newly mopped floor. Or the hot dog eating contest between the firefighters and PD. Everyone made a conscious effort to be around the bar more to help fill it with even more bright memories.
There were times and days when the memories couldn’t be replaced, Hermann had to replace the bell above the door because I couldn’t stop picturing Rob beneath it.
Sadly, the nightmares had remained. I can see the dark circles underneath Jay’s eyes, the eyes that normally fill me with bliss now cause me guilt. I’ve tried to sleep on his sofa, but when I wake up, nightmare or not, Jay is in a chair awake. After a couple nights of the failed sofa plan, I went to stay at my place. The first night I was woken up by Jay banging on my door, claiming he couldn’t sleep knowing I was having a nightmare without him. Even if I slept at my apartment Jay was there either in my bed or on the sofa.
“Kim, he’s not sleeping. He’s running on black coffee, I even saw a Monster can in his trash,” I pour her a draft beer as she sits at the bar top.
“Are you sleeping? You both have matching bags under your eyes.”
“I can’t really, the most I’ve gotten is a few hours in a night,” I lean my elbows on the bar top to hold my head in my hands. “I’m so tired. I don’t think Jay gets more than me, he’s always awake.”
“Have you talked with anyone since everything happened?”
“No, I wouldn’t even know who to talk to,” I admit.
“We have resources through the precinct, I’ll text you some. You and Jay should go, or you’ll both crash and burn.”
“Thanks, I’ll talk about it with him.”
“Hi beautiful,” Jay says as he sits and the bar stool.
“I thought you weren’t drinking tonight,” I joke.
“What I can’t call my girlfriend ‘beautiful’?”
“You can, you just don’t normally lead with it,” I grab Jay a glass of water.
“Well I have to step up my game,” I laugh at his his seriousness.
“So Kim and I were talking and she brought up me potentially seeing someone. Someone to help talk through everything that happened.”
“That’s a great idea, I can help you find someone.”
“I think you should see someone too, you’re sleeping less than me which is saying a lot.”
“I know, I actually made an appointment with my old therapist for next week. I saw her when I was getting help with my PTSD from being over seas. I can see if she has any suggestions of people to go when I’m there.”
“Thanks, Kim’s gonna send over a list too,” Jay grabs my hand and starts to brush his thumb over the back of it.
“We’ll get through this,” Jay says confidently.
“I know,” I smile back at him. “You still going to be around when I finish up?”
“Absolutely. Yours or mine?”
“Yours is closer,” Jay squeezes my hand before standing up.
“Hey Jo, this was left for you,” Hermann says and slides over a yellow packing envelope. I thank him and grab a knife to rip it open. Numerous photos spill out covering the wooden countertop. The photos are all different but the subjects are the same, me and Jay. Some are just of me, or just of Jay, but most of them are of us together. The air becomes thick and suddenly the music is too loud. This can’t be happening. I quickly push the photos back into the package and run to the office to stuff it into the bottom of my bag. Even with the envelope out of sight my heart doesn’t calm down, everything feels as if it is turned up to a thousand. I jump when the door opens and Hermann walks in.
“I’m sorry kid, I didn’t mean to scare yah,” I open my mouth to say anything but nothing comes out. “Hey, hey, you’re okay. You’re safe. Why don’t you head home? We got it from here.”
Hermann reaches for my coat and bag, but before he could touch it I snatch both from the locker. He doesn’t touch me as he walks me out of the office.
“Hey Jay,” Hermann quietly calls. Jay’s smile quickly disappears as he scrambles up from his seat.
“What happened?” Jay asks quietly once he’s close enough.
“I don’t know, she was like this in the office when I found her. You guys head home alright?” Jay nods and wraps his arm around my waist to lead me out of the bar.
“We’ll be home soon, okay?” His kind tone makes it hard to keep the tears at bay.

Worry
Jay Halstead x reader
Summary: When Y/n has an accident with Jay's car, she fears his reaction. However, she is surprised by the real reason for his concern
Tumblr media
Y/n was still thinking about everything that had gone wrong that day. Her head hurt, probably from the cut on her forehead and the bruise that was beginning to form on her cheek. However, the guilt that settled in her body was the worst of all.
It all started when she woke up late for work. Since she was still an intern at the company, Y/n couldn't be late, or her boss would be even more unpleasant than usual. On top of that, she didn't have a car, as she left it at her house and spent the night at Jay's, her boyfriend of five months, who had picked her up from work.
So Jay lent her the car, saying Hailey could give him a ride. Little did she know that this would be the worst decision ever. When she was returning home at the end of the day, she was at an intersection when suddenly a dog ran into the street. As she tried to avoid it, she hit a car coming in the opposite direction.
The impact was enough for her to hit her head on the steering wheel, hence the cut and bruise. She was so scared, her ears were ringing and she only managed to come out of the shock when the driver of the other car got out of his vehicle and started banging on her window, screaming angrily at her.
Y/n's eyes burned with tears that threatened to fall down her cheeks, but the girl tried to stop them from falling. It would just make her more pathetic, she thought. Other drivers saw what had happened and called 911 and told them what had happened. Fortunately, the other vehicle wasn't as damaged as Jay's.
Her injuries were attended to on the spot, something Y/n couldn't have been happier about. So Will, Jay's brother, couldn't see her and call her boyfriend, only scaring him when he was working. They even let her drive home, since the car was drivable and she could decide which workshop to take it to for repairs.
Now, Y/n was sitting on the couch, anxiously waiting for Jay to get home. She had already thought of many ways on how to tell Jay what happened, but none of them calmed her nerves. He was going to be so upset, he lent her the car and she couldn't even be trusted with that.
Finally, she heard the keys open the door and Jay's voice echoed through the house, "Babe, are you here?" he questioned, hoping she had come to his house instead of going to her small apartment.
"In the living room." she said, keeping her gaze on the ground, not having the courage to look her boyfriend in the eyes and reveal to him what had happened to his precious car.
"Hey, baby." Jay smiled when he saw her sitting on the couch.
However, a frown quickly formed on his face when she didn't get up to greet him. Normally she would jump into his arms and kiss every part of his face until finally kissing his lips passionately. It was his favorite part of the day.
Y/n finally looked up at him when she felt him approaching her. Her eyes filled with tears again and her throat tightened when she saw Jay's face change when he noticed his injuries. He immediately got down on his knees in front of her, gently holding her chin so he could move her face and inspect her cut and bruise. She also noticed the way his hands were shaking.
"What the hell happened?" he questioned, feeling his heart tighten. His gaze then hardened, "Who did this to you? I'll kill them."
"Jay, I'm so sorry." Y/n murmured, her eyes filling with even more tears, which made Jay worry even more. What the hell had happened to his girlfriend and who did he have to beat?
"Why are you apologizing? I'm not understanding, baby. Tell me what happened so that I can fix it, yeah?"
"Your car…" the girl sobbed, unable to say a sentence without tears falling down her cheeks. Jay pulled her to his chest, hugging her until she calmed down enough to tell her what had happened. "A dog crossed the road and when I tried to avoid it I hit a car. And you trusted me with your car and I crashed. I'm so sorry, Jay, I really am and—"
"Slow down, Y/n. Breathe." Jay asked, alarmed by how her face was getting redder since she still hadn't stopped to inhale. His thumb stroked her uninjured cheek, hoping it would comfort her.
"No, I'm sorry. The car is still drivable, but it has a dent and is scratched. But I can afford the repair. I just need a few weeks and talk to my boss to pay me in advance, but I swear I'll sort this out. I know you need a car for work but you can use mine and I'll use the bus in the meantime."
"Y/n!" Jay exclaimed so she would finally shut up and listen to him. He cupped her cheeks carefully, forcing her to look directly at him. "Listen to me, you won't pay for anything. I don't care about the car, I care about you. So please calm down and tell me you're not hurt anywhere else. Please."
"I'm okay." she admitted, seeing Jay's body relax a little and he sighed in relief, running a hand over his face. "I'm just a little sore from the impact. The car is worse."
"Stop talking about the damn car or I swear I'll take it to the scrap yard to be destroyed. I can buy another car or live without it, but I can't live without you. God, Y/n when I saw your face all hurt I thought I was going to have a heart attack."
"I'm sorry…"
"No more apologizing." Jay was quick to order, giving her a stern look, but nothing hid the concern and love that was evident in his eyes. "Why didn't you call me? Did you go to the hospital? What did they say?"
"I didn't go to the hospital. The paramedics saw me there and said everything was fine."
Jay didn't answer her, suddenly getting up and going straight to his cell phone. His jaw was clenched and he looked like he was ready to have another mini heart attack.
"Who are you calling? Please don't bother Will just so he can come here and see how I'm doing. I'm fine, I promise."
"Either Will comes here or we go to the hospital. There's no room for discussion."
Y/n looked down shyly, knowing she wasn't going to win this argument. So, she waited for Jay to finish her call, definitely dramatizing her situation to Will.
When he hung up, he sat down next to her on the couch and brought her into his arms again. Jay squeezed her, needing to calm down and reassure him that she was relatively okay and safe. He placed his face on her neck, breathing in her perfume, which gave him an immediate comfort.
"Why didn't you call me?" he murmured, his voice breaking. He had never felt so worried as he did at that moment. He wouldn't be able to live if something had happened to his girlfriend. She was the one. The love of her life.
"I didn't want to bother you. You were working."
"Y/n, you can never bother me. Please, call me when something happens. I don't care if it's for the simplest reason, call me. I need to know that you're okay. I would never be able to forgive myself if something bothered you happened and I didn't know anything about it."
"I will. Again, I'm really sor—"
Y/n couldn't finish speaking when Jay's lips were on hers, kissing her fervently. He put all the love he felt for her into that kiss, one hand behind her head and the other on her unhurt cheek. Y/n responded to her kiss, placing her hands on his broad shoulders and pulling him closer.
Hesitantly, they broke the kiss so they could breathe. Their faces were so close that they could feel each other's breaths. Y/n snuggled closer to him, loving the feeling of security that only Jay could give her.
"I love you." Jay admitted in a low voice, not wanting to break the comfortable silence. He was looking into Y/n's eyes intensely, showing how true those words were.
Y/n's eyebrows rose upon hearing her boyfriend's confession. It was the first time Jay had said that to her. Her stomach filled with butterflies and a big smile appeared on her face, which calmed the detective's nerves. "I love you."
"God, I love you so much, baby." Jay kissed her again, his hands moving down to her waist.
However, their little make-out session was interrupted by a doorbell. Jay went to open the door, his lips slightly swollen and a smile on his face. However, he returned to his worried state when the doctor started treating Y/n.
His brother was under Jay's attentive gaze, analyzing everything the redhead did with crossed arms. When Will touched Y/n's bruised cheek and she flinched, the detective stepped forward and glared at his brother. "Careful."
Will gave him a look over his shoulder as if saying I'm the doctor here, but didn't open his mouth. Jay was stressed and Will didn't blame him, he knew how much his younger brother liked this girl. He had even told her about asking her to marry him with his mother's ring.
"I think everything is fine apart from that cut, which doesn't need stitches, and ice the bruise. Hmm, the pressure is still a little high. Has anything happened that could have stressed you even more apart from the accident?" Will asked in doctor mode.
"Uhm…" Y/n hesitated, looking shyly at Jay. "Well, let's just say the other driver wasn't too happy about me hitting his car. He was a little scary."
The silence that formed was horrible. Will cringed, knowing that Jay was going to completely flip out. He was already a nervous wreck, and this was only going to make his mood and worry worse. As expected by both, the detective let out a series of curse words, taking his hands to his hair and pulling it. He closed his eyes and clenched his wrists, trying to control himself. At that moment, he needed to comfort his girlfriend and then he would deal with the man who scared her.
"You know the car's registration number, right?" Jay asked her when he calmed down slightly. He sat on the couch, pulling Y/n onto his lap, feeling the need to always be touching her. Y/n nodded. "Good. I'll deal with him later."
"Well, it looks like my work here is done. Y/n, ice your cheek and disinfect the cut. If you feel any discomfort or pain, don't hesitate to call me."
"You sure she doesn't need to go to the hospital, Will?" Jay kissed Y/n's neck, feeling her snuggle closer to him and closing her eyes as she yawned.
"Nothing seems wrong. She just needs to rest and recover."
"Okay. Thanks, man."
"Thank you, Will." the girl opened her eyes and smiled slightly. Then she turned to Jay who instead of making an effort to get up, tightened his arms around her. "Aren't you going to accompany your brother out?"
"He knows the way out." he muttered. Will rolled his eyes, but smiled at the couple and left. He knew Jay would never let Y/n out of his sight again.
Jay kept tracing her cheek lovingly, which was making Y/n sleepy. "Are you tired, baby?"
"Yeah."
"Go to sleep. I'm going to take the week off and I will also call your boss saying you won't be going to work until you get better." Jay said, kissing her forehead.
"That's not necessary. I feel fine." Y/n tried to argue.
"It won't work, Y/n. You're going to stay at home and rest so I can take care of you. I need to know you are safe and okay. And the only way to know that is to have you in my arms. I'll never let you go."
"I kind of like that idea." she chuckled.
"Good." he said, continuing to soothe her into unconsciousness. When he felt Y/n's breathing calm down, indicating that she was asleep, Jay pulled out his phone, calling Voight. "I need you to research the owner of a vehicle. Find what you can to get him arrested, parking tickets, speed limits, I don't care. He scared my girl."
"You got it, Jay. Take care of Y/n."
"I will. Bye." he hung up and focused his attention on his girlfriend again. She was so perfect. "I love you, baby. So much."

Jay Halstead- Allergies
Tumblr media
When Jay asked me out on a date I was so worried he would take me to a restaurant, luckily he didn’t, instead we went just went to Mollys and had a drink. After how well our first date went Jay asked me on another, which meant I couldn’t hide my allergies from him anymore. Thankfully he understood and so once again we didn’t go out to eat.
Now here we are married with a 5 year old daughter who fortunately doesn’t have as manny allergies as I do, except for the fact she’s allergic to cows milk. Anything containing said product could send her into anaphylaxis, this is why we have many vegan products just to be on the safe side.
I sit at my desk opposite Jays as I fill out paperwork from my last arrest when my works phone rings
“YN Halstead”
“Mrs Halstead hello, this is Mr Martinez I’m calling you to let you know that I will need you or your husband to come and pick up Layla from school. She’s unfortunately been sick and says her chest hurts”
“Ok” I sigh looking at the clock on my computer 12:34, “I’ll come down and get her. Has she eaten anything at lunch?” I ask standing up. Jay then looks at me confused
“Yes, she didn’t say she felt ill, in fact she ate all of her lunch”
“What was it?”
“It was macaroni cheese, but I’m not sure what Layla had instead. I’ll find out from the cook and let you know what it was when you arrive”
“Ok I’ll be about 15 minutes” I sigh putting the phone down
“Everything ok?”
“Laylas been sick, I’ll go and get her, you think Voight will let me bring her back here?”
“Never had a problem with it before. I’ll come with you” Jay says getting up “go get the car ready and I’ll let Voight know”
We arrive at the school, but as we park up there’s an ambulance with blue lights flashing. Quickly we get out of the car and rush into the reception area
“Oh thank goodness Mr and Mrs Halstead your here” the receptionist walks round her desk to us “please follow me”
“What’s going on?” Jay says worriedly
“After Mr Martinez rang you he spoke to the cook. They’re new and turns out that she gave Layla the macaroni cheese”
“What?!” My eyes widen and panic sets in
“She was given her epipen and we phoned an ambulance. She’s in here” we head into a room where I see my best friend Sylvie sat next to mine and Jays daughter
“Momma!” Layla yells crying
“It’s ok momma and daddy are here”
“Why the hell did the cook give my daughter something she’s allergic to? Do you not have a list of all the childrens allergies?”
“Of course we do Mr Halstead, but as this cook was new she didn’t know their allergies”
“How did she not know? Surly she would have see then list?”
“She never come to the office to get it” the receptionist states
“Then why didn’t you take it to her?” I shout
“I understand your both upset, but I have to remind you that we are still at a school” the headteacher now walks in
“And how are you going to make this better Hm?” Jay asks crossing his arms
“We have asked that she go to an allergen awareness course, and we will be making a list to stay in the kitchen”
“YN, Jay? Layla is ready to move to hospital. You know the drill”
“Yeah course. Babe let’s go” Jay sighs at Sylvie “but this isn’t over. I want to know how your going to prevent this from happening again”
Jay and I head to the hospital where we’re told that Layla will be ok but no school for her for the rest of the week.

Just For A Moment - Part 2
TW: cheating, angst
Part 1
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Masterlist
Several days had gone by, and the team had finally solved their case. Such an accomplishment would usually have them ready to celebrate with a few rounds at Molly's, but this case was different.
Not only because the victims they had lost were children, but because the team member they were in the midst of losing was someone they all considered a friend.
Aurora may have only joined the team a few months ago, and she probably wasn't as close to them as they were to each other, but they were on the same team. That means they come in every day and fight the same battles. They have each other's back, and they are a family.
It seemed that belief just didn't extend to Aurora.
She had pulled back from them over the days they spent pouring over every inch of the case. Sure, she would exchange niceties, she would say 'good morning' and 'good night' at every opportunity, she would even smile. But all those words and actions felt empty, her smile seemingly forced as her eyes wouldn't sparkle in the way Kim had always loved, the corner of her eyes wouldn't crinkle as she smiled big and happy in the way Adam teased her for, and there was barely an echo of the laugh that Kevin found himself always joining in on.
When Aurora joined the team, it was to fill the void left by Erin. In doing so, she only filled a larger part of all their hearts.
The Aurora they knew was kind and caring, always volunteering to help and willing to be a shoulder to cry on. She was patient and joyful, but she was also protective and fierce. And now, she seemed like a shell of the woman she was only a few days ago.
She could tell the team was getting annoyed by her behaviour and could see how her nonchalance and passivity was causing frustration to build in the hearts of all her colleagues. But a selfish part of Aurora found that she did not care, that her pain was her's, and she ought to choose how she dealt with it.
And the truth was, she was done letting people get too close. Done letting herself get hurt.
Aurora could see how the team's worry slowly grew to resentment, how they eventually gave up trying, and how they soon looked towards Jay for a lead on what to do.
Jay was pissed off with Aurora. Every time he tried to talk to her or touch her or be near her, she would brush him off as though he didn't exist. As though he hadn't spent six months loving her.
Every time she did, his suspicions that she had figured out he was sleeping with Hailey grew. But as he saw the way she treated the rest of his friends, his paranoia would be quelled and his heart would grow hopeful that she was simply going through a crisis she didn't know how to deal with, and she had picked isolation as her solution.
He hoped, and hoped, and hoped.
But even after the case had closed, she still hadn't dropped the act, still hadn't snapped back to reality.
Her behaviour was concerning, throwing Voight off too. Jay found himself texting, calling, and showing up to her place every chance he got, and all his efforts were in vain.
Soon, the concern that dwelled in his heart turned to boiling rage. Her dismissal of him infuriated him, and still, she would give him no answer, no reason.
Jay turned to his friends, confiding in Hailey, Adam, Kevin, and Kim about her odd behaviour. Spewing off tangents about how her behaviour continued and how it irritated him, and they did the same.
Soon, their rants turned into speculations - perhaps Aurora was the one cheating? Maybe she was acting this way out of guilt? Or maybe someone from one of her undercover lives showed up? An ex-lover? An enemy?
The conspiracies grew, and then began to spread throughout the district.
Aurora wasn't dumb, she heard the whispers and she saw the stares. And it didn't take long to figure out what was being said, and why.
As she was fed the rumours of her own love life, she begged her heart to feel something, but all she felt was numb.
And so, despite the rumours and the stares, the continued in her ministrations, living on autopilot as she spent hours upon hours stuck with the man who betrayed her, and had to watch as he preened at the blonde woman he spoke to under the guise of friendship.
***
The tension was palpable in the air, and the team could feel the rage that festered in the office every day as Jay and Aurora avoided each other at every turn.
Despite Voight's involvement, Aurora assured him that she was fine and refused to divulge further. He had warned them both to sort out their misunderstandings now before he was forced to pick between his seasoned detective and the officer with the potential to do amazing things.
Still, she ignored him.
No, Aurora couldn't face Jay. She could feel the emotions that bubbled in the depths of her heart, begging for release, but her mind refused to let her give Jay the satisfaction of seeing her cry. Of seeing her broken.
No, it was better this way. To pretend he didn't exist and to not get close to any of them again.
Perhaps, it would've been better to just leave.
That thought had plagued her since the first night she had seen Hailey and Jay together, and it still haunts her today. It would make everything so much easier.
But she likes this job, she loves how she is able to help others and see the difference she made instead of pretending to live different lives.
This job was easier.
This job was safer.
Aurora prayed that if she continued with her game of ignoring Jay, then things would slowly go back to the way they had been before she and Jay had started dating. But the thought of such a feat was laughable, and things really came to a head on Sylvie Brett's birthday.
***
The team had been invited by Hermann for a surprise birthday party for Brett at Molly's, an invitation Adam had accepted on all of their behalf.
Right as they were about to leave for the night, to get ready and meet back at Molly's, Kim stopped Aurora by the door. The others had already piled into their cars, taking off into the darkening sky.
Aurora turned to Kim, her face looked sincere as her eyebrows were raised and her eyes were wide, "you're coming tonight, right?"
Aurora shrugged, "maybe."
She turned to walk away, only to be stopped when Kim stood in her path, "look, I'm sure the other's might have said this once already, but we're worried for you. You haven't been yourself."
"I don't know what you want me to say."
"Say you'll come tonight. Please. It'll be good for you."
"Burgess..."
"Look, Jay will be there too. Maybe you guys can talk? He's been worried sick for you, Hailey says he hasn't been sleeping properly for a few days."
The words that spilt out of Kim's mouth made Aurora's heart freeze, and somewhere in the back of her mind, she found herself screaming finally. Finally, she feels something.
But the emotions she felt were nothing happy. A wave of nausea overtook her as she contemplated Kim's words. Hailey said Jay wasn't sleeping? The same Hailey that was fucking her now ex-boyfriend behind her back?
The irony almost made her laugh as she pushed down the sickening feeling. He wasn't sleeping the night she went to surprise him, too.
Here she was, drowning in misery. And sure, she believed that she didn't care what the others said about her or did to spite her, but Jay was still sleeping with her.
Still touching Hailey and holding her, all the while seeking every moment he could find to do the same to Aurora.
And it was that thought - the idea that even now, Jay didn't have the decency to pull away from Hailey and pick her - that had all the anger she had been locking away now threatening to break its way through her emotionless barrier.
She took a calming breath, remembering how she stood in front of Kim and was sure every word she spoke would be relayed to the man who broke her heart, "I'll see."
Before Kim could prompt further, Aurora breezed past her, getting into her car and heading home - unaware of the fact that Jay's car sat parked, as he debated whether to follow her and try once more.
His eyes met Kim's as she left the building, her head shook as she was sure Aurora wouldn't come to Molly's tonight. Jay was irked and decided that it was pointless to follow only for her to shut him out again. Instead, he went back to his place with Hailey sitting in his passenger seat.
***
Aurora wasn't sure why she decided to go. Maybe it was because Kim had asked so pleadingly, or maybe it was in the hopes of catching Hailey and Jay off guard - hoping they would slip up in front of everyone.
Still, she wasn't sure. All she knew was that she sat in her car, which was parked next to Molly's, after changing out of her usual outfit and refreshing her makeup to make it more suitable for the event.
She looked into the bar and the atmosphere already lively, considering she was a bit late to the party. But she was here, and that was what mattered.
She stepped out her car, making her way to the doors of the bar as the breeze of a cool night sky caused the skirt of her blue dress to brush lightly against her thighs.
The same blue dress she wore that night.
As she crossed into the threshold, she tracked the bar looking for familiar faces, but once again a different set of eyes beat her own.
"Aurora! You made it," she could hear the surprise in Kim's voice and felt her own surprise as Kim embraced her tightly. She must have gotten drunk quite quickly.
"Yeah."
Kim looked at her expectantly, but seeing she wasn't going to say anything more, she decided to pull her towards the table with the rest of their team, "c'mon, everyone else is over here."
Aurora glanced over the table, her heart pounding as she took in the sight of Jay. He looked beautiful, his hair was pushed back, and he was dressed in a form-fitting black t-shirt that accenuated his back muscles. Aurora could have lost herself in that moment, silently pretending that Jay hadn't cheated on her and she was just admiring her amazing boyfriend.
But when her eyes dragged over the blonde, pressed almost firmly against his side, she felt her mood sour instantaneously. Before she could pull away from Kim, the pair had already made their way to the table - "guys, look who came!"
The conversation died as they took in Aurora's presence, hiding their shock at the fact she actually came. They exchanged greetings before the table sat in an awkward silence, the tension pushing Adam to joke, "Hailey, you better climb off that chair. Don't think Aurora would be happy with you cuddling up to her boyfriend like that," his words had been teasing, but they caused Jay and Hailey to stiffen at the realisation that they were sitting so closely.
Hailey coughed harshly, turning to Aurora as she nodded and began to slide off her seat. That is, until Aurora spoke, "what boyfriend?"
She couldn't help it. Maybe it was because she had held it back for so long, and just seeing them touching each other so openly made her feel so stupid once again for being so naive. Even Adam had noticed, despite him joking about it. But she chose to listen to Jay over her own logic and sense.
She truly was an idiot.
"Excuse me?" Jay's voice was incredulous, appalled by her words.
"What boyfriend?"
"C'mon man," Kevin spoke up, "she's clearly joking."
As Kevin chuckled, Kim and Adam joined in, but their laughter died down quickly at Aurora's words, "no, I'm being serious. Jay and I aren't dating."
Jay's eyes widened in incredulity, "babe, what are you talking about?" The rest of the team looked between them, bewildered.
But Aurora only shrugged, raising her hands in surrender as she spoke again, "I'm going to go wish Brett a 'happy birthday'."
But Jay was furious, and after such a revelation he wouldn't let her go so easily. He followed her walk to the bar, "no, you don't get to walk away after saying something like that."
"I can say whatever I want, Halstead."
"Don't call me that."
"I can say whatever I want."
It was the most she's spoken to him in days, and he wasn't sure if that was what prompted him to keep going or if he actually wanted to know why she was behaving like this.
"Then why? Why say something like that? I haven't done anything to you."
Aurora ignored him, choosing to sit at the secluded area of the bar instead hoping Jay would get the signal to leave her alone.
"Talk to me."
"No. Go away, Halstead."
"Not until you tell me what's going on."
"Nothing is going on," Aurora heard her voice break before she felt it, her mask already crumbling as Jay continued to chip away at it from outside.
"Aurora, baby. Please."
"Don't call me that!" Aurora raised her voice without meaning too, her words cutting through the joyful atmosphere and dragging everyone's attention onto them.
"Is everything okay here?" It was Matt Casey who asked the question, ever the chivalrous saviour.
"It's fine, back off Casey."
"I wasn't talking to you."
"It's fine, Matt. I was leaving now, anyway."
As Aurora got up to leave, Jay held her wrist - "no. You don't get to walk away, talk to me."
The music had now been switched off, everyone holding their breath as they watched the scene unfold and Aurora tried her best to hold back her tears, pulling at the hand he held, as she spoke, pleadingly "Jay. Please."
"Talk to me."
"Jay, let her go."
"Shut up, Casey. No one is talking to you."
A new voice spoke up now, "just leave it Jay, she's not worth it."
Hailey.
Of course it was.
She walked up to the pair, standing at Jay's side as she placed a hand on his shoulder before rubbing it down his back, "just let her go. Don't let her ruin the party."
Aurora couldn't stop the scoff that escaped her, "you have got to be kidding me," she looked towards Hailey, her pupils blown in anger, "can you not resist being away from him for even two minutes? God, you really are a desperate bitch."
"The hell did you just say to me?"
Aurora wrenched her arm from Jay's grasp, "you heard exactly what I said. You have been after him since the day you started."
Hailey let out a guffawed laugh, but Jay spoke in her place, "is this why you've been acting so off? I have told you so many times Aurora, she's just a friend."
There it was again. Those four words, the lie that has been ingrained inside her head from the moment she was introduced to Hailey. And, just like that, she finally lost it.
"Just a friend? Hell, if that's how you see a friend, I wonder how you see me."
Jay's brows scrunched in confusion. He drew closer as he held Aurora's face in his hands, his grip firm as she tried to turn away, forcing the tears that began to well in her eyes away.
"You're my girlfriend. I love you, baby."
There it was again. Baby.
And just like that, she broke.
Tears began to stream down her face as she tried to stifle her own sobs, her head shaking vigorously as all the emotions she had shoved down and locked away were thrown out into the open. "Liar," she whispered, "liar. You're a liar."
She tried to pull away from him, but he didn't relent.
Slowly, her voice began to raise louder - "liar! You're nothing but a filthy liar! I hate you. I hate everything about you, and I wish I never met you!"
The words brought tears in Jay's eyes, he was pained by her confession and confused by her behaviour.
It didn't make sense. None of this made sense.
"If you loved me," her words were a shaky whisper, hands rubbing vigorously at the endless stream of tears that fell down her face, hands trembling as she looked at him like she finally saw him, "if you actually loved me, you wouldn't have fucked her."

Decided to give my sideblog a small shout-out. I started to write my own fics, currently writing a TopGun fic, with Rooster, Hangman and reader. But I also started my fist Chicago PD fic, with Jay and OC.

Detective Jay Halstead is a senior member of the Intelligence Unit, where he is partnered with Detective Hailey Upton after his former partner went missing undercover. While he never wanted to give up hope, the CPD assumed her dead and he was resigned to accept it. Now, two years later, Jay gets a sudden phone call with news that changes his life forever. Avery Clarke is alive. want to be tagged? link in bio <3
Chapter Nine
Tumblr media
"Are we helping out on a case?" Avery directs the question to her boss, uncertainty only growing when he folds his arms over his chest and silently looks at Lang.
"Sort of," Agent Lang starts slowly, eyeing her skeptically before noting the impatient quirk of her brow. He clears his throat, "Actually, I'm here about your case. I want to talk about the last two years."
Her heart skips a beat in her chest, and she swallows, "What about it? Are you on the Volkov case?" It's been weeks since her return and they officially lost the case again, not even being told which agency had it. Every single time she or Hank have reached out for an update, they've been stonewalled. She's tired of being frozen out, but if the case is being handled by the DEA instead of the FBI, maybe her connections can finally get them somewhere.
"I'm part of the DEA task force," Lang carefully pauses. He knows her well enough to prepare himself for the temper she occasionally exhibits. "And so were you."
A sharp inhale cuts through the thick silence that follows, Avery blinking with furrowed brows as she attempts to process the admission. How in the hell was she part of a federal task force when it wasn't even a federal case two years ago? Hank can sense the shock and confusion coming from the detective, so he steps in, setting aside his own shock, "What do you mean, she was part of the task force?"
"You weren't missing," the agents starts, "You were undercover, for us." Unable to believe the words coming from the man's mouth, Avery turns on her heels and begins to pace in the small space, dragging her fingers through her hair. She closes her eyes and tugs harder at the tangled strands, as if the pain might magically cause the memories to resurface. At her lack of response, Lang continues with what he knows, "After your cover was blown, they held you for interrogation. They tortured you for weeks. Beatings, electric shock, sensory deprivation. But you never broke. Actually, you convinced them that you were who you said you were — Talia — and that you and a few others were planning on betraying the Aleksovs. The wire was so that you could use the information for yourself.
"They believed you. I still don't understand how you did it, but you gained their trust and struck a deal. In exchange for your life, you'd give them everything they needed to take control of the Aleksovs' operations. After almost three months, you got them to trust you enough to let you go on the promise that you'd work for them. By this time, the FBI had taken the case from Major Crimes, and we were planning on officially making a task force. They had an undercover, very low level but had his ear to the ground. Once Nikolai Volkov successfully used your information to dismantle the Aleksovs, there was talk about a "beautiful woman" that got caught with a wire but was able to charm Nikolai with her business savvy and flexible loyalty. We started to suspect it could be you."
Having heard enough, Avery finally interrupts, shaking her head in disbelief over what she is hearing, "No. This doesn't make any sense. If I somehow 'charmed' them enough to let me go, why didn't I contact CPD as soon as possible? Why didn't I call Hank?" She glances to the older man as his name falls past her lips, desperately searching for any kind of answer in his eyes. But she only finds that he is just as unsure as she is.
Lang folds his arms across his chest, "We had agents waiting at the locations we knew about to intercept you at first chance. That's when you and I connected for the first time. I gave you my pitch: no one has ever gotten as deep within the Volkov organization as you had the chance to, Avery. And if you left then, they'd think you were betraying them. They'd come after you and they wouldn't stop. So, you agreed to go back in as part of our federal investigation long enough to help our undercover agent rise higher up in the ranks. You'd have to stay 'missing' for just a couple months, so that you could get out without raising suspicions and set us up to take them down. Do you remember Special Agent Anderoff – Jim – from the task force a few years back? He became your main contact. After a few weeks, you found evidence of something bigger. Turns out, the Volkovs have been trafficking in more than just guns and drugs."
"Women," Voight realizes gruffly, and her blood runs cold.
Lang nods, "And girls. Some as young as twelve, and we had no idea. You couldn't walk away."
A warehouse full of cages flashes behind her eyes before being replaced by the cold, battered body of Nadia. The image of her teenage self, high out of her mind and pressed down against a dirty couch.
"We thought that by taking the case from the CPD, it would stop the investigation into your disappearance. And it did, for a while. But Detective Halstead never fully stopped looking into things, and one lead he was following started to get close to you. If we hadn't planted faulty intel, he'd have ended up getting himself or you killed." She exhales a breath, facing Lang and meeting his eyes for the first time in minutes. "Avery, it was your idea to fake your death. You knew that Halstead would never stop looking for you so long as there was some shred of hope that you were still alive. We planted some seeds about a woman matching your description having been killed, and after a little bit of pressure on the deputy superintendent, they had you declared dead."
No. "You're saying..." There was no way. "You're saying that I chose this?" Her voice shakes as she forces the words out, a painful sting starting to build in the pit of her stomach. There was no way she would let her friends and family think that she was dead... Would she? To protect them, to protect Jay?
Avery blinks back the tears that begin to well in her eyes, deciding that right now, something she can focus on – something she can control – is anger. "Why now?" she grits out, taking a step towards Lang as her volume continues to rise, "Why come to me now, when you've known what happened to me this whole time?"
"I wanted to," he tries to assure, "As soon as we found out what happened, I wanted to. The decision was made way above my paygrade. When the agency heard about your memory loss, they decided it was better to keep you in the dark. Your cover was likely blown but you... well, they thought you would want to go back in to finish what you started. I finally managed to convince them to let me come see you today." Lang shuffles around a few things in his bag before pulling out a manila file folder. He extends it towards her, "You're not an agent, so this is as much information that I could get them to hand over."
Avery eyes the much-too-thin folder with a scoff, "What, I don't have clearance to read about my own life?"
When she stubbornly refuses to take it from his outstretched hand, Lang sighs and sets it on the edge of Voight's desk instead, "I'm sorry." With no response other than a stiff nod from Voight, Lang offers another apology before leaving the office.
A soft thud echoes as the door closes behind him and Avery brings her palms up to press into her eyes, trying to stop the tears from falling and stifle the burgeoning headache. "This can't be real," she mutters as she shakes her head.
Hank picks up the folder before flipping through the pages, eyes skimming over its contents. "There's photos," he confirms, "It's your signature on these reports."
She doesn't believe him. Avery snatches the file from his hands but can't bring herself to look at it herself. She can't believe him. There's ringing in her ears and pounding behind her eyes, and the air is suddenly so thick that she struggles to take in a complete breath. Spinning on her heels, she wretches the door open and storms into the bullpen, immediately feeling the weight of seven pairs of eyes. One pair in particular burns at her skin, and she fights the urge to meet them. Stepping quickly to her desk, she rips her jacket from the back of the chair.
Hank calls out her name from the doorway of his office to no avail. "Detective Clarke," he says firmly, raising his voice in a way that causes her to halt in her tracks halfway across the room. "Just take a breath, we'll figure this out."
Clenching her jaw tightly to fight the sob clawing at the back of her throat, Avery glances over her shoulder at the older man, "We? There is no 'we,' Hank. Apparently, I made sure of that." With that, Voight watches without objection as she rushes down the staircase. He doesn't know what he could possibly say to stop her from leaving, to stop her from spiraling, when he is just as lost for words. As he turns to head back into his office, he spots Ruzek stand from his desk out of the corner of his eye. "Don't," he orders, and Adam halts his stride, "Let her go."

This cannot be real. This cannot be real. This cannot be real.
She doesn't know how long she's been sitting here, alone in her car. The sun has already traveled across every window, shining through the glass and bouncing off the pages now sitting beside her. Avery stares straight ahead, but her eyes blur everything out. Reading the words on those pages — her words — was supposed to give her some answers. Answers other than what she was told: that she chose to let everyone she loves think that she was dead.
But they were her words, and the proof that she was undercover for the DEA was right there in black and white. And she knows that vowing to put an end to a sex trafficking ring is something she would do. After what happened to Nadia, she would never let anything like that happen to another girl if she could help it. The last two years started with torture and pain before being spent gathering intel, arranging deals, and sabotaging whatever she could. The information has allowed her to construct images in her head, rebuilding the memories she lost, but there are still gaps between the reports she was given. She can feel it in her gut that there is something missing, something important. Something that she needs to remember.
She has lost everything. She lost two years of her life, two people she considered family died without her being there. She can understand staying undercover, sacrificing her normal job and life. But if she made the choice to fake her death, that means she chose to sacrifice the man she loves. That means that everything that's changed, the way things are now, is her fault.
The sound of a car horn pulls Avery back to reality, and she blinks away the tears clouding her vision. She hadn't even realized that she was crying as she wipes her cheeks with the backs of her hands. Taking in her surroundings, her eyes land on the bar across the street from where she's parked in front of her new building. After staying with Hank since her return, she decided it was time to get back to normal by looking for her own apartment. She has still been at the home she grew up in, though, until she gets actual furniture besides the mattress still in the plastic resting on the floor.
Avery stares at the bar for a few minutes, watching the people that walk in while it's still light out and contemplating whether she should be one of them. She knows that she shouldn't go inside. She knows that she should go back to work. She knows that she shouldn't let the contents of that file drive her into a spiral.
She goes inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Avery sets down the box filled with the rest of her clothes, taking in the furniture finally set up in the bedroom. A small smile tugs at the corners of her lips, relieved that she has an actual bed to sleep in instead of the mattress she's been crashing on the last few nights after stumbling home from the bar. She walks back into the main area of the apartment, smiling wider as Kevin finishes mounting her television and Adam adjusts the couch. Avery narrows her eyes as she watches Kim playfully throwing cushions at him to set up, their laughter filling the apartment. "Thank you guys again for helping me today," she gushes.
"Stop thanking us," Kim laughs, "You know we're happy to help." She moves to head to the bathroom, squeezing Avery's hand with a smile as she passes.
Avery watches until she is for sure out of earshot before slowly making her way towards Adam with a smirk. He plops down on the couch with a sigh before spotting her, eyeing her warily, "What's that look for?"
"What's going on with you and Kim?" she counters with a raised brow. He rolls his eyes and throws his head back with a groan. Pointing an accusatory finger, she chuckles, "I knew it. You're hooking up again."
Adam can't fight the smile that creeps up, giving a half shrug, "Maybe."
"Maybe," she mocks as she sits down next to him, earning another eye roll.
They spend the rest of the afternoon hanging out, eating pizza and watching the game on her freshly set up tv. After a few hours, Avery bids them goodbye and starts unpacking her clothes until she can't ignore the itch anymore. She grabs a glass from the kitchen, pouring drink that ends up containing a hefty amount of vodka and just a splash of soda before heading back to the bedroom. She moves over to the window that she managed to turn into a makeshift crime board. Opening the panels, Avery stares at the photos and pages she taped up days ago. She knows that there is way more to the story of the last two years, and she is going to figure it out. Agent Lang was right. She is going to finish what she started.

Summary:The Third Member Of The Well Known Trio,Comes Back To Chicago After Her Second Tour In Afghanistan Leaving Old Wounds To Open,An New Information Coming To Light.
Jay Halstead x Female Reader
Part 1
————
Your best friends Jay and Mouse weren’t to surprised that your first stop when you got back into Chicago was at the 21st district, but that didn’t mean they weren’t thrilled about it,because they were. You had been partnered with your old best friend, the one and only Jay Halstead. Not to many people knew that even while on your second tour you stayed in touch with mouse everyday, you knew it was something he needed as well.He had told you that,he was dealing with issues of missing everything that it was to be over there, but it didn’t mean he didn’t help you with your own issues.
You had always been secretly teased, for the fact you weren’t the one to sleep around you joined the rangers at a young age,so you were never in a relationship and most of the guys always wanted to be your firsts, which only got worse when they found out you had the biggest crush on Jay Halstead,Which mouse let you in all things and telling things you never knew.So when you came back instead of the drinking and the pills,an sleeping around like Mouse and Jay had used to cope with their PTSD,you used your own sense of dark humor thanks to mouse, who was like your brother from a another family. The two of you practically attached at the hip dorks with each other and lost without each other.
While you all had been on a case,of a victim who had been decapitated everyone seemed tense. You hadn’t even thought about your words as they flew out of your mouth you felt your own blood rush cold.
“So no head” your voice wasn’t loud but it certainly wasn’t quiet as Jays hand quickly covered your mouth.
“Really” he whispered gritting his teeth looking over your shoulder down at you.
You shrugged your shoulders, moving your hand up slowly to move his bigger hand away from your mouth, his hand twice the size of yours while Lindsey walked over smirking but there was a faint blush on her face. You already where aware of her and jays relationship and it’s rocky turns, thanks to mouse.
“Well if that doesn’t look kinky,I don’t know what does”Lindsey chuckles putting her hands on her hips, that rested on her jeans, her finger grazing her gun holster.
You couldn’t help but tense up at the awkwardness that radiated off the two of them while Jays hand moved, down to his side.
“Why would it be kinky?” You couldn’t help but question her as you pulled your coat around you realizing you got a text from Antonio as your phone screen was light up,half out of your pocket.”kinky’s a drink and I highly doubt his hand is a alcoholic drink”.
The second the words left your mouth,Lindsey had busted out laughing while Jay had a half smirk on his face like his mind was now on something else.
“Okay you know what fuck you” you stated walking away from the both of them.
Not knowing what on earth their deal had been while you were standing next to Antonio and Mouse, you could feel Jays eyes burning holes into the back of your head.
“So if our suspect is arrested, are we all headed back to to the district or are we going to Molly’s tonight celebrating getting this asshole off the streets”. Mouse asked the two of you while you smiled seeing Mouses smile widen.
“As much as I would love to man,I gotta get home to my kids,Laura moved and basically checked out mom wise” Antonio half shrugged before heading away from the crime scene.
You hesitated you didn’t wanna tell Mouse no but you also just wanted to crash but he seemed to catch on to that as he hugged you telling you it’s fine and to go home and get some rest. Not to your knowledge Mouse would leak everything to Jay that night at the bar.
Tumblr media
Jay had went to Molly’s with Mouse and his brother Will who just got off a long shift at the hospital, having to deal with people that they had brought in on top of everyone else.
“Hey man can I ask you something” Mouse asked Jay with nervousness and worry laced in his voice while trying to ignore the look from his brother will.
“Yeah man, what’s up?” Jay asked him while taking a drink of the light orange drink that would burn its way down his throat.
“Do you hate her or something,I mean you were laughing at tagalong.” He questioned him, fiddling with his beer bottle.
“Of course not,we went through everything together the three of us,why do you ask?” Jay was now more confused then ever.
“Because man,you were laughing at her and you don’t even know the half of it and anything that was going on.” Mouses voice was agitated as he finished his drink, sitting it down.”they teased the hell out of her over there, both tours for being in love with you but they also made fun of her because she had never been in a relationship, she joined the rangers when she was young but she knew better then to sleep while in the rangers she knew it would lead to things being said.”
“Wait are you serious” jay was shocked while asking him.
“Man why would I lie to you,why else do you think she stayed in touch with me and not you?Im the one who has told her the littlest bits of what she knows, otherwise she wouldn’t of even made that comment tonight but it’s her way of coping,an honestly that’s better then the drinking and the pills and screwing that you and I had both done” Mouse grew sad talking about it while standing up grabbing his coat.
“Don’t corrupt her like that” jay grumbled slapping mouse on the cheek but not to roughly to hurt him.He had no idea the sweet, goofy girl he fell in love with in the rangers loved him,an little did he had know tell now how innocent she was compared to everyone else even while she had saw everything that they had all saw together.
What Mouse had told Jay that night, would lead to him wanting to protect her from everything though he knew she could defend herself.
———————
When tomorrow came the first thing in the morning you had been in Mouses office,it was still to early to be upstairs and working on cases while nobody else was there.
You and Mouse had been in his office watching the traffic cameras talking while Jay came in with coffee handing it to the both of you before sitting down taking a drink while you and Mouse continued your conversation not thinking anything about it.
“Actually your wrong in that technically in a sense, slave is the deliverance of the irsaelites from Egypts bondage, which just means sexual practice that involves the tying up or restraining of one’s partner”. You had said it calmly though you were so nervous as it came out of your mouth.
You had glanced over at Jay seeing his face become beat red as he almost spit out his drink glancing at mouse before you.
“Where did you learn that!?” Jay slightly raised his voice confused while coughing slightly on his coffee from being surprised.
You shrugged standing up,seeing Voight walking down the steps coming near Mouses closed office door, not ratting out Mouse who was explaining all these things to her.
“Research I suppose” you had tried to make your voice flirty though it was quieter then your normal voice.”it’s a great way to learn what I dreamed out last night, when I thought of having you tied to a bed till I please you enough” you teased before walking out pretending to cheers to them before shutting the door as you heard Jay spit out his drink coughing mumbled “oh my god” as the door shut.
“Aye let’s roll out we have a case” Voight tells you before going to the office to get the others, having headed out himself while you got in the passengers side of jays truck as you and him sat outside of a house watching to make sure nobody left and nobody came.
You could keep feeling Jay looking over at you or he would be taking a drink of his coffee leaning his head against the back of the head rest as if it was a tempt to calm his nerves you could see his eyes shut tightly for a moment, before refocusing somewhat back on the house. You sure maybe Mouse was right and that could be possibly all he was thinking about, knowing he was right when Jay quietly groaned mumbling “how much longer is this gonna take” into the mic talking to Voight.
