there’s a pattern in 80s comics when it comes to jason (his origin story, barr’s run, his meeting with dick, his meeting with his possible “mothers”) and it’s that jay trusts relatively easily. he is usually hostile and cocky upon meeting people, simply because he is looking out for danger, but in some cases it lasts literally moments before he easies into smiles. this does not mean, of course, that he trusts people with everything right away; that he trusts them not to leave him behind for example, that he trusts them to take care of him; for that, he still needs to develop an actual relationship as any other person. he still has attachment issues. but it’s so important in his storyline that he was quite trusting and easy to impress and that he desperately wanted to connect with people. that’s the whole thing. that his innocence survived so far. and that it costed him everything when he met sheila.

i wish that 1. it was more of common knowledge that jason’s death marks a huge shift in tone of gotham-centric stories 2. dc also capitalised on this meta in their storytelling.
i want to see flashbacks that imitate the cheesy and sweet style of silver age nostalgia (one that we know from barr’s detective comics run for example). jay should have the iconic original robin costume (i don’t care that it’s silly, it’s supposed to be silly), and he should be cracking up jokes that made sense only in the 80s. and there should be scenes of him and batman (batman who used to smile at him openly) investigating in daylight.
cut to panels of dark, gritty gotham that have dominated contemporary stories. military boots in place of the pixie ones. blood on jason’s hands.
the contrast.

grief is the defining force in "batman" as a title, but one thing that has always been utterly engrossing to me is that jay was once an outlier in what place this theme occupied in his narrative. for both bruce and dick, grief was motivational; grief was what pushed them into vigilantism. while they later utilised it in completely different ways; bruce became more stagnant and "frozen" in that moment, and for dick it was an impulse that made him more dynamic; they both viewed grief as a form of resolve (even if constituting a sisyphean task).
this is not the case for post-crisis robin jay.
jay enters the role of robin after standing up for justice that was based completely on his own moral intuitions and distaste for the criminal authority figure (the ma gunn' plotline). and while grief was there, it never served as an inspiration during his first missions.
the first time grief becomes entangled with his role as robin, it's in the two-face storyline ["batman" (1940) #410 – #411], when jay learns that bruce hid the fact that willis was murdered from him. he spends a day in his bed, before they encounter harvey on patrol, and jay tries at revenge. later, he merely cries, accusing bruce of "sparing him" knowledge of his father's demise– in other words, sparing him grief, while allowing him in the field at the same time. this is crucial in so far that jay doesn't seem to make a connection between combat and his grief. however, in response, bruce lectures jason about how grief inspires revenge, and how revenge has to be tempered into justice.
then grief becomes an important theme in the beginning of 'a death in the family,' something that i find to be often overlooked. first of all, jay is grieving after gloria. second of all, from the dialogue that is nowadays ignored because of all the retcons to the todd family story, we learn that jay is also still grieving after his parents. in "batman" (1940) #426 alfred informs: “i’ve come upon him, several times, looking at that battered old photograph of his mother and father, crying.”  to that, bruce contends: “in other words, i may have started jason as robin before he had a chance to come to grips with his parents' deaths.” and so bruce realises that the role of robin has not been beneficial for jay in grieving at all.
after years of mourning without closure, jason looks for the solution for his grief in moving on by finding a new family; since he thinks along with the role of robin, bruce is dismissing him as his son, he goes on the journey to find his biological mother instead. in my eyes, this has always been a salient moment. it shows that jay is still searching for relief in mourning in civilian life. this is his first intuition. of course, it does not stop him from turning to his secret identity when he realises sheila is in danger; it does not protect him from his death either.
but the lesson that bruce tried to teach jason in his early robin days was not lost. it was very much learned, and the consequences are tragic; the plot of the utrh is evidence of that. there, the narrative regarding grief aligns with what it has always been in "batman": it becomes a drive to vigilantism. jay is no longer pursuing closure in the civilian dimension. grief becomes something to be "tempered" into justice. and as bruce knows, the line between justice and vengeance is very thin.
so just as bruce is forever frozen in the loop of the memory of his parents' death, jason is now stuck in the moment of his death (and of the loss of his father.) both of their pleads are: no one else, never again. both of them seem to consider themselves exempt from this rule, subjecting themselves to reliving their pain to keep fighting.
still, the defining difference remains; jay's grief not only motivates his vigilantism. vigilantism is also the primary root of this grief. and years ago, he has not seen grief as a matter to be solved by vigilantism at all.

hello! can i request some Jason centric fic recs?
this is actually such a difficult question. in spite of years spent reading jason-centric fanfics, it is very rare that i find something that i genuinely enjoy. still, i do have some favourites that i go back to.
beneficiary by @sirsparklepants (1/1, 2k)
my favourite post-death jay fanfic. it's such a beautiful, bitter-sweet conclusion to his legacy.
untitled by @pendulum-north (1/1)
this is a very short ficlet. absolutely riveting language, as expected of a poet. my favourite take on the canon divergence that is bruce dying instead of jason. would sell my soul for north to actually write more on it.
what the living do by Anonymous (1/1, 6,5k)
stunning. perhaps my all-time favourite. jason believes he's dead. dick takes him on a road trip.
complications by JHSC (1/1, 6k)
i want to tell you so badly why i adore this fanfic but that would spoil the conclusion. so instead i can just tell you that it contains my unpopular agenda for jason's character development.
the (family) doctor's appointment by smleeish (1/1, 4k)
i have some qualms with the minuatiae of this work but this sickfick surprised me with the depth of the character study. the conclusion is so beautiful in the way it gets to the core of jason's values.
jet black crow by starknjarvis (series, 2/2, 19k)
i normally avoid sex-worker aus so please do know that this had to really impress me to be found on this list. the main reason for which it winded up here is a conversation jason has with bruce in the second installment.
the clay steals the clay by zipadeea (1/1, 2,5k)
just give it a read. a haunting... fix-it. i think about the usage of catholic themes in this fanfic often.
PLUTO. by orpheusaki (@damianbugs) (1/1, 22k)
a huge reason for which i love this one so much is the thematic similarity to the earth-51 arc in countdown. there's such good understanding of what made jason who he is as the red hood & his relationship with batman as the symbol and with bruce as his father.
things that make it warm by one_step_closer_to_death (@hopeworth) (1/1, 4k)
my favourite jay & dick fanfic! if you've been following this blog for a while, you know i am very particular about their relationship. you also know that i believe in jason's need to reconnect with his childhood and that dick should be a part of it, and this piece delivers that in the sweetest way.
of broken, blazing wings by FrEShAVocaNoob (44/44, 190k)
before i get to the praise, i have to say that this fanfic does talia very dirty and that i am not a fan of how it deals with mentions of jason's childhood & his robin days. however, it is also 190k of jason having a perpetual mental breakdown and it follows canon event starting from the lost days and finishing with countdown. it has great pacing and an admirable balance of being plot-driven and the focus on character development. jay is so painfully young and lost. i also really enjoyed dick's attitude. it's a riot and an emotional rollercoaster. i will never recover from it.
compulsory (shameless) self-promotion:
leave no trace, a ficlet on ouroboros.
black out days, a lost days au which is not a story at all. about talia, jason, the need to mythologise and staying away.
and my wip robin (vol 2): future nostalgia, a jay lives au that is to contain follow major batman plotpoints such no man's land and murderer/fugitive.

maybe starlin was right when he said that it didn't matter if jason pushed garzonas, what mattered was that batman thought he did it. i'm thinking about how with all that happened later on, with all of jason's actions post-res, it truly doesn't matter for anyone anymore and everyone assumes his fault. and the saddest thing is how it diverts the attention from the fact that bruce thinking that jason was doomed to participate in the cycle of abuse and that the only way out of it was through jason embracing his own lifestyle caused that whole tragedy. and sure, bruce also believed jason could proceed to learn from his (perceived) faults and become better, but it's heart-shattering that he thought jason was capable of doing it at all. this is what hurt. imagine someone accusing you of an awful crime and then saying it's okay because they know you are still a good person; this is not the reassurance bruce thought it was. perhaps years later, bruce's assumption seems justified taking into account the principles jason has developed re: killing. but it never was.

other people struggling to recognise jason post-res, sure. but-- jason coming back to gotham and keep walking into dead ends because some parts of the city plan shifted just a bit when it got rebuilt after the events of "no man's land." jason getting lost in the manor; jason opening the door to where his room once would be, finding it to be just a carbon copy of other guest bedrooms. jason struggling to read bruce's expressions because they used to be so much more open. jason surprised at the ruthlessness of minor villains who used to just stick to their gimmicks but now are dedicated serial killers and terrorists. jason being scolded by batman for not following a protocol that he does not know of during a rare team up... etc... etc... so what follows is not quite relearning; relearning assumes a certain level of previous familiarity he does no longer possess... the city got colder, and crueler. but it's his home. he can keep up. he can even be two steps ahead (the relativity of distance is a problem. ahead might look dangerously like behind. but trust him, he knows what he's doing.) the new rules can be broken before he finds out about them. he won't be surprised about his bedroom being no more if he never wanted to go back there in the first place. no need to read into bruce's expressions; they obviously convey the worst. minor rogues can be disposed of before they turn out to pose real danger. and that dead end, the wall? nothing an explosive won't fix when he's in a hurry.

i know i said that before but "my favourite" is when people say "he would not do that/say that" about jason reaching out to bruce as if it is not something he's been doing for the last two decades. yes, counting pre-52 in, later with some irregularities in lobdell's writing maybe, but still. i don't know what people read where that is not the case– or well, i do know, and it's fanfiction. and not even the good ones.
it's a stereotype conceived around his violence that makes him so incredibly boring. you need to come to peace with the fact that jason loves his dad. (and yes he did love him even when he tried to kill him. or maybe especially then.)

this whole interaction from legends (1986) #3 means so much to me. jay feeling guilty for failing to protect himself, comparing himself to dick, and bruce telling jay he has never made him anything but proud.

Regarding Jason's pre-crisis characterization, would you say that he really is just a carbon copy of Dick or did he eventually grow into his own character in the span of his run time? Also, would you recommend it to a Jason fan to read about his pre-crisis days?
i don't think pre-crisis jay has ever been a carbon copy of dick actually! i know it's a popular opinion but frankly speaking, i think people who say that either have not read his pre-crisis run at all or have not cared enough to understand the story.
the fact that pre-crisis jason’s origin and background (in major ways, but not 1:1, that’s also a misconception) mirrors that of dick was not “lazy writing” and it’s not some sign of the general silliness and carelessness of the editorial of the times. it was very much a conscious, well-thought-through decision.
let me break this down (so that it doesn't become another essay):
to make it clear before i get into anything else: jay's background being so similar to that of dick is actually a way to set up a story about their differences. despite sharing so much experience, there are some key variables in both their origins and personalities that the writers clearly wanted to bring readers' attention to. i will circle back to it later.
i reckon a lot of dc fans who never actually got to read these issues have this misconception that the death of the pre-crisis todds was an exact parallel to that of the flying graysons. however, jason’s parents do not die in a way that dick’s parents do; in fact, joseph and trina todd die while aiding dick in an investigation after he requested their help (this is also why dick later says that he would take care of jason have bruce not offered; he feels guilty for their demise.) this is a deeply fascinating concept tbh, because the todds are like collateral damage to vigilantism; sacrificial lambs, and dick is responsible for it, leaving another orphan on the scene. it's a full cycle!
it was also a smart way for jason to enter the narrative this way because it gave him a link to his predecessor. unlike post-crisis, jason’s first contact is dick, which makes sense, because it’s a story about robin (as a disclaimer: the way post-crisis alters it is also sensible for the plot it tries to convey; but these are two various storylines, approached from a much different angle!)
and pre-crisis jay is a very much different character from dick since day one. dick projects on him vehemently, giving him the robin mantle (once jay tries out different identities btw), which jason accepts as a gesture of love but also dreads. he struggles with the concept of vigilantism from the start, while everyone around him assumes that this is simply the way things go because his circumstances are so similar to that of both dick and bruce. he has a seriously tough time trying to reconcile with the concept of dual identities. he questions bruce's motives and actions a lot more than both dick in his early days and post-crisis jason. he stares numbly at the wall after his first patrol. he voices his concerns.
here i also want to say, that while i absolutely do think everyone should read these stories, and there are some storylines that can be incorporated into post-crisis jay canon, it doesn't hurt to consider which of them do not fit into it at all.
post-crisis and pre-crisis jay have completely different backgrounds, and since pre-crisis jay has been brought up in a rather safe and stable environment, as i mentioned, he's much more confident in questioning bruce. on the contrary, post-crisis jay seems to be so delighted to be having an adult at all that his faith in batman is almost absolute (for most of his robin run at least.)
as i said, pre-crisis jay is also much more aware of the duality of the vigilante life. as a former performer, he says that it feels disappointing to know that none of the people whom he helps will know his name, and he is used to having an audience (he is aware that it is a selfish sentiment.) this is not a thing that post-crisis jay considers at all.
i also imagine that post-crisis jay would never tell bruce the (famous) words that he would be perfectly happy to be just his son and not his sidekick (which he does pre-crisis); not because the truth is different but because he doesn't fully comprehend that it's an option. post-crisis robin jay's compartmentalisation is barely existent if at all; bruce "gave him" robin even before he took him in, so the roles of a son & sidekick are almost one and the same for him, which is why i'd say the events of a death in the family occur at all (he "failed" as robin -> he runs away to find another parent).
and well. pre-crisis jay actually has friends. his world does not begin and end with his role as gotham's protector and hope. speaking of which, he also does not possess the same passionate relationship with gotham as post-crisis jay does.
there are of course many traits they share – i'd say they both have even more sympathy for criminals and an even stronger of belief in rehabilitation than bruce does. they are also both, in a way, a victim of the cycle in the family and projection – bruce (and pre-crisis, dick) assume that the way of dealing with grief is to go out into combat, which is not necessarily true for them. but ironically, i think, it's post-crisis jay who remains more innocent and is easy-going in the way he initially settles into the role.
ultimately, i think all batfamily fans should read pre-crisis robin jay's run because it's perhaps the only run that takes adoption and the topic of legacies seriously. and it's before the editorial and writers decided that batman having a child was lame, and that robin's role was just CA, so bruce is truly parenting. while pre-crisis bruce is much more of a sweetheart than post-crisis bruce is, so it may not all seem "realistic" for contemporary characterisation, it still gives a good idea of what a plotline about bruce being a parent could and should look like. i'm not going to lie to you, post-crisis jay's run feels seriously loveless compared with pre-crisis. pre-crisis, there's plenty of family tensions, and at times it appears that no one in this damn family understands each other, and yet there's so much fondness and care and desperate declarations of belonging. pre-crisis jay's story is genuinely, from the very beginning, a story about a child whose parents die entangled in a vigilante's investigation and who is thrown into a family of vigilantes, projected onto from all sides, and who tries to fill in shoes he never truly asked for in the first place. but dear god is there tenderness there. is there self-awareness and a serious attempt to conceive what taking over a mantle of a sidekick means. yeah. much more than it is in post-crisis.

Jason dreads the moment when Bruce starts talking. He’s probably trying to figure out the angle, sorting through his internal spreadsheets. They’re going to analyse the past year in as few words as possible, or discuss the treatment, to give Jason the illusion that he has any control over it. Or maybe they will get back to the topic of how Bruce simply cannot do what Jason wants him to; the judge, jury, and executioner lecture that Jason never really needed, because deep down he knows that his cries and requests were selfish. Childish, even. But the silence stretches. It starts feeling more like peace. “I love you,” Bruce says, and that’s not code for anything.
