Hiding about the halls of the Academy late at night wasn’t exactly an unusual occurrence with Viktor; neither of them were particularly hung up on rules and regulations when there were important theses to test, world-changing equations to be balanced. And so it wasn’t unusual to find himself pressed against a wall in hidden hushed corners, waiting for night guards to pass, or folding himself through tight gaps in windows when Viktor beckoned. That had been a constant about their… relationship. When Viktor called, Jayce came. 

so a while ago @pimglow did this series of prompt request drawings over on twitter, and i requested stargazing jayvik, which produced something so gorgeous, and i just had to write something for it

Chapter 9: Burn the Witch is up!

Excerpt:

There was a loud buzz that broke Jayce out of his thoughts with a harsh flinch, then a voice over an intercom system: “What?”

It was static-like and metallic through the speakers Jayce couldn’t find, but it was Viktor’s voice. He could almost laugh, because he knew that tone. He was bothered, as if someone had interrupted his work, which he always loathed. Jayce felt a relieved, giddy smile make its way across his lips. He’d done it. He found his husband. “Viktor?” He said, still looking around for the speakers, “Viktor, it’s me. It’s Jayce. I’m here.”

There was a brief silence before the intercom turned back on with another loud buzz. “Councilman Talis,” Viktor addressed flatly, “The Defender of Tomorrow. Your arrival is expected, however unwelcome. Please go back the way you came, and be cautious of the surrounding territories. Firelights don’t like outsiders.”

Summary: After years of bliss, Viktor disappears after a rocket explodes in The Council’s meeting hall. It's up to Jayce to bring him home, but The Machine Herald prepares for a confrontation.
