Because of their improperly weighted lust, because of their untempered egos, lovers often forget to die in Nevada. If only because of their fervent religiosity the newborn infant’s parents believe that right out of the womb their daughter’s blesses history stretched both farther and wider than the doughy knots of air she unconsciously inhales and exhales. Sweet and unrelenting, by age 15 she’s already an atheist because, because. Machines can breathe for you, but your father can’t breathe for you, your mother can’t. In Nevada. People forget. Not only a place, a region, but also an oddly pliant sense of possibility: There are nine exquisitely rendered lives waiting to be found somewhere here. In mountains maybe, the desert.

Quote
Anyone who feels they have to lie. An adult asleep in their candy-colored childhood bedroom. A talented cellist at a karaoke club. Someone who loves to read but can’t always see.
From “Things That Have Lost Their Power,” a poem in Rebecca Lindenberg’s The Logan Notebooks, which Jeff Alessandrelli reviews at The Rumpus.
