GOD I REMEMBER THOSE
and it really is similar (re: 1950s-70s virgin pins)
for The Youths: thin jelly bracelets were really popular among adolescent girls in the early 2000s. they came in a variety of colors, and there was a huge parental kerfuffle over the idea that either they signaled sexual availability- see above -or that a boy could snap one off a girl’s wrist and present it to her to receive the sexual favor indicated by the color
now, for me (growing up in the suburbs of Nashville, TN), this was only ever an urban legend. girls wore whatever color bracelets they liked, and any insinuations of deeper meaning were laughed off. we talked about it as yet another ridiculous thing parents believed, not a real code anybody actually followed
some kids claimed that, no, it was a Real Thing at their cousin’s best friend’s brother’s school. and we all listened with the half-disgusted fascination that talking about sex engendered for 13-year-olds. but I never knew anyone who took it as seriously as people seem to have taken virgin pins in the mid-20th century
some schools banned jelly bracelets on the strength of the myth alone, though. it was nuts

Found a stash of my old jelly bracelets.
Tumblr media
(These colors had no meaning back then, at least afaik -- the internet tells me the sex bracelet code started around 2003, at which point these were at least 5 years old. I just bought what I liked. Madonna aesthetic because my dad had banned her.💜)

Okay. So. I was thinking about the pace of Lie as we grow, until we stop and thought that maybe, why not, I had to add a few stories. Just- because, you know. Shrugs
So. Yeah.
The part I'm writing right now, which would have been the fourth, will actually be the sixth. Because why not, right? So now I have to write two other parts before I even post the one I still haven't finished (5K+ in), which is following one I still haven't posted. Shrugs again, hard.
Okay, no biggie.
And you know what? Now I can write one of them focusing on the jelly bracelets, I can't wait.

Y’all remember them jelly bracelet things? They were a “thing” at some point when I was in high school. They had “rules” for when someone broke certain colours, which no one I knew took seriously and only used them to troll people or make jokes about.
I found a packet of them and had to get them. They’re barely smaller than what I remember, so I don’t know how long it’ll take me (like maybe a minute or two) to take the three wrapped together off my wrist. But, imma wear them tomorrow to see if my boss notices (probably not)
