something that i noticed abt the afton family: every member has a name that can be shortened down to a nickname.

William- Will, Bill.

Michael- Mike

Elizabeth- Liz

Vanessa- Ness

and another neat lil detail: aftons only really use the shortened name when they're hiding. Instead of going by David or Steven, William goes by Dave in the books and Steve in the movie when he's hiding with a cover identity. Same thing goes for Michael when he's looking for his father in the games. Where he could be using Michael he instead goes by Mike

could this be a coincidence? maybe, either way it's something neat.

A woman named A has a creepy roommate, B, who wants to become her. She also has a complicated relationship with her boyfriend, C.

To me, the best part of the book is the setting. The world resembles our own, but just feels very off.

Another day where Jen wished she could just quit her job.

A fifteen minute break was not nearly enough to recover from being screamed at by customers and blamed for things that were definitely not her fault, but… well, better than nothing. She was lucky her boss even let her have one tonight. She took a long drag of her cigarette to try and ignore the chill of the night seeping into her skin.

Still, she wasn't looking forward to going back inside. She had another hour of this hell and if things kept going the way they did, she might very well snap. Wouldn't have to quit then– her boss would throw her out on the street without an ounce of regret. She laughed to herself and flicked ash to the ground. That option was sounding more and more appealing by the second, and if she didn't have bills to pay, she might've legitimately considered it.

Her thoughts are broken by the sound of glass shattering under foot. She froze, heart racing in her chest, and whipped her head around to see who it was.

Merilee was standing there, hands held up. Relief filled her chest. A welcome face in the chaos.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to sneak up on you."

"You're fine," Jen said, laughing shakily as she flicked more ash from her cigarette. She took one last drag and snuffed it out. "I'm actually glad to see you. I've had a… not great night."

"No offense, but I can tell. Your mascara is running." Merilee dug around in her purse, brows furrowed, but before Jen could ask what she was looking for, she pulled out a pack of tissue. "Come here, babe. I'll get you fixed up."

Feeling much more relaxed in her presence, Jen closed her eyes as Merilee busied herself with wiping away her mascara. "I should know better than to try and wear makeup to work," she said, and she made a soft, surprised noise when she leaned in for a quick kiss once her face was clean. She composed herself with a deep breath. "But you've met my boss. He thinks I look bad without it."

"Screw him," Merilee said with a pop of her gum. She pulled out a tube of lip gloss next and Jen pouted so she could easily apply it. She followed it up with a quick spritz of her perfume, the smell comforting after many nights of falling asleep next to her. "Tell you what. How long do you have 'til you get off?"

"Uh– an hour."

"An hour," she repeated. "Alright. I'm going to sit in the back booth and make sure nobody else bothers you tonight."

Jen blinked. Then, she laughed. "You can't be serious."

"I'm very serious! I'm sick of people pushing you around at work."

"You're too sweet." Jen shook her head. "I'm fine, really, but that would be nice. At the least, you could keep me company. And when I clock out, maybe we could–"

"Rent a movie and grab a pint of ice cream?" Merilee suggested, reading her mind. "Sounds like a date."

"That was the idea," Jen said, quietly giggling. She pulled her in closer by her jacket, capturing her lips in hers, but she didn't give her a chance to get too into it before breaking away. "As for what we could do for the next few minutes…"

A grin, making her heart flutter in her chest. "I could come up with something."
