Book Review 62 – The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings
Tumblr media
This is the latest book I never would have heard of if it wasn’t for an award nomination (WFA for Best Novel, in this case). Overall, I was left dearly wishing I had liked it more than I did – it was so thoroughly soaked in imagery and references to a whole milieu I only barely know enough about to catch all the references flying over my head. Unfortunately by the final act the whole thing just collapses into a mess of spectacle without much in the way of connective tissue or context.
The story follows Perilous “Perry” Graves, his kid sister, and his best friend/crush Peaches (who is clearly an ersatz Pippy Longstocking but for some reason this is almost literally the only reference the book doesn’t explicitly acknowledge). They live in Nola, a fantastical alternate New Orleans full of zombies, animate graffiti, sky trolleys, and music that is indistinguishable from magic. After the magical songs that sustain the city escape/are stolen, it’s up to the three of them to get them back before Stagger Lee (the song) hunts down and kills the others for his mysterious partner. There’s also an extended subplot with Casey, a recently returned Katrina refugee in what seems to be our world, discovering that his and his cousin’s graffiti and other art is very literally magic and can come alive when he isn’t looking. Things just generally get messier and harder to explain from there.
Above everything else, the book’s a love letter to New Orleans. The sheer fascination and affection Jenning’s has for the place just about oozes out of every page. The geography and the culture and especially and overwhelmingly the art. Now I know barely anything about modern pop music and even less about classic jazz, but Jennings is either a massive fan or an incredibly confident bullshitter, and either way it’s an absolutely loadbearing part of the book – famous jazz musicians appear as magicians and ghosts, snatches and stanzas of different songs are quoted liberally, and of course the songs themselves are the driving engine of the plot. I, at least, just kind of let all the references wash over me and try to figure them out from context, and also started listening to the namedropped songs as I read. But even without really knowing the subject, the sheer love for the culture that just suffuses the book is really incredible endearing. Which is good, because it’s absolutely the main actual draw here.
The dialogue also deserves a shoutout – both because there’s a fun line you can draw between the characters that talk like actual people and the ones that intentionally present themselves like cartoon characters, and also because it’s the first book I can recall reading this year where people speak in AAVE. Plus, as a matter of style, when songs or certain ghosts were speaking telepathically the book used a different font for what they were saying, which is the sort of flourish that I always like when it’s not too overused.
While the surreal, exaggerated sort of magical absurdism works very well for the setting of Nola, the plot is...just kind of a mess. You almost get the sense the book was written in one sprint and then never revised – the protagonists are constantly getting help out of nowhere exactly as they need it to solve their latest problem, and revelations of plot critical information exactly when it’s needed to keep things moving abound, whether there’s any setup or justification for it or not. The metaphysics that underpin Nola are all vague and confused, which really wouldn’t be an issue if the entire third act didn’t turn on on the villain being wrong about them. The end result is a finale that feels like a bunch of big set piece scene the author had been looking forward to writing without any real connective tissue linking or supporting them.
Also, like – it is a major part of Perry’s arc that a year before the events of the book he had a run in with a monstrous caricature of a Jim Crow era hanging judge, and it has traumatized him sufficiently that he had steadfastly refused to try and do any magic since. The judge is later revealed to be an escaped bit of living graffiti, with absolutely zero relevance or deeper significance, and never appears on-screen again. Which just feels like some sort of narrative malpractice, honestly.
I’m also just left a bit disappointed with the villain – or, specifically, the wasted potential. Like, the idea of The Storm as this primeval elemental force that wants nothing more than to drown the world is a pretty great villain for a magical New Orleans, honestly. And there was something there of graffiti and music and just art being this engine of joyous hubris letting the city exist in defiance of its inevitable doom – but you really have to dig to get at it, and most of the other personal plots and heroes journey stuff burying it was far less compelling to me.
Anyway yeah, in the end this very much felt like it was style over substance, but on the other hand the style was excellent. In the end I kind of feel like this was ill-served as a book? Not that it’s necessarily impossible to write a novel that’s mostly about music, but this was really begging for a medium that could include a soundtrack.

My Opinions on Power Rangers Wild Force: Disc 3
The Danny x Max dynamic is getting stronger. So much in fact that I actually physically cringed at the wedding episode when they tried to make Danny as straight as possible again. KNOCK IT OFF.
On the one hand, I am seriously not a fan of Jindrax and Toxica getting mindwiped to get power upgrades into their ugliest forms. On the other hand, this does promise to become more interesting later down the line when they get their brains back.
TEN HUNDRED MILLION POINTS FOR JEN SCOTT ARRIVING IN THE PAST LIKE SARAH FUCKING CONNOR.
Admittedly I liked the Deer Zord. I feel Stag Zord would have been preferable to the naming of it, but you can't have everything.
I will not diss the singing princess. I will, however, never be able to not skip it, because it reminds me of my youth being forever traumatized by the featuring of the kind of after school programming that 90s kids and their parents were promised would help with brain development--that was an utter lie.
"How could they be both Mutants AND Orgs?" Well children, when two non-humans entities are bored and greased up like pigs at a county fair...
*army crawls on the set to slip twin wedding bands on Eric and Wes's fingers* Please, please just...just kiss each other. I can't stand the garbage antagonistic "flirting" with Taylor and Eric. I cannot stand it.
Creepy faceless child Animus continues to be my least favorite Deux Ex Machina.
Is Alyssa's family going to end up in some relation with the Watanabe family? Are we going down this path? Because the Power Rangers Daddy Issues Plague really doesn't have to continue. Alyssa seems to be a mildly competent individual, she doesn't deserve to have surprise ninja/samurai family referenced.
That reference to Principle Kaplan in Alyssa's award for excellence was a little tongue in cheek moment for OG reference, sure. But was it deserved? No really. Show us an Appleby Award please; she had to deal with ALL of the Mighty Morphin Rangers AND Bulk and Skull AND Rita believing that taking over Angel Grove would mean taking over the world. Give her the medal, give her the cheers.
Toxica fucks up, Toxica gets punished, JINDRAX PROTECT.

Jen Tortures Herself With Every Dreamworks Animated Movie Ever: Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
Tumblr media
So despite how much I like the first two Madagascars, I've never seen this one. I do vividly remember the trailers for it though, and based on those trailers, I thought this was going to be an annoying waste of time back when it came out, so I skipped it. Suffice to say, I was (for the most part) wrong. Cause the Madagascar trilogy ends on a fairly high note!
Tumblr media
We pick up with our squad of animals leaving Africa, this time finding themselves in Europe, where they're hunted down by the intense animal control Captain DuBois. To escape her wrath, they join up with a traveling circus, hoping to impress a promoter in order to finally get back to New York. Along the way, we have the group befriending (and in some cases falling in love) with the circus animals as they try to keep up the act that they are circus animals themselves.
Tumblr media
So yeah, there's a lot going on here, and the movie is rapidly paced to accomodate it, but I think that actually works in this movie's favor? Like, the tone here is a lot sillier and more out there than the first two, but the way it pulls off its own inherent zaniness just... works somehow. The humor is over the top yet still maintains more or less the same level of quality the first two Madagascars had (though I can't say it surpasses them in any real reguard).
The characters here are all just as fun as usual. Alex is once again our focal point of the group, and I am a little disappointed that some of the other more minor characters, the Penguins in particular, aren't really left with anything too plot significant to do (granted their own spinoff movie was probably in the works by this point so I'll give it a pass). The new characters are also pretty fun, with the embittered tiger Vitaly who comes around to the group in the end, the spirited jaguar Gia who is just a delightful love interest for Alex, and the absolute sweetheart sea lion Stefano. They're all great additions to the cast and have great chemistry with our established animal crew.
Tumblr media
But I think its safe to say the best part of this movie is its villain, Captain DuBois. This woman is CRAZY, man. She is so utterly unhinged, so delightfully devious, and the way they animate her is so fucking funny. She had me cracking up every second she was on screen, like damn give this woman an award for most underrated Dreamworks villain or something. She deserves it.
Tumblr media
The animation here is surprisingly beautiful. Like there are some scenes in this movie, particularly the circus performance scene, that were just a FEAST to the eyes. I dare say this is one of Dreamworks' prettiest movies I've seen in the watch so far. Yeah, I know, a Madagascar movie, of all things. But it's true! The colors just pop, the movements of the camera and the characters are so sweeping and refined, the score... is kind of forgettable, but visually, this movie is great.
Tumblr media
When it comes to it's predecessors, I can't say I like this more than the first two. It lacks a good bit of heart that they had, and its humor does skew just a bit more juvenile than the first two. But when it shines, it really shines, and I'm really surprised at how much I ended up liking it! Turns out, you really can't judge a book by its cover, or a movie by its... rather poorly made trailer.
Overall Rating: 7/10
Verdict: Get mounted on DuBois' wall

2023 ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME
Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, George Michael, and More: Here Are the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees
The outlaw legend, the rap queen, and few of this year’s inductees will perform at the ceremony, which takes place on November 3 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its 2023 inductees, which include a classic Motown act, a reclusive post-punk goddess, a militant agitprop alt-rock band, and, finally, a 90-year-old country and pop-culture titan. Willie Nelson, George Michael, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners, and Kate Bush will all officially join the institution and receive their well-deserved honors as part of the induction ceremony at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on November 3.
In addition to these incredible talents, the Hall of Fame will also highlight several musicians and industry champions with additional accolades. The recipients of this year’s Musical Excellence Awards—for artists, musicians, songwriters, and producers whose originality and influence have had a dramatic impact on music—are the reigning Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan; prolific songwriter and longtime Elton John musical partner Bernie Taupin; and Al Kooper, the renowned multi-instrumentalist, producer, Bob Dylan collaborator, and Lynyrd Skynyrd discoverer. Hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc and influential guitarist Link Wray will each receive the Musical Influence Award, designated for artists whose style has directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock ’n’ roll and music impacting youth culture. The Ahmet Ertegun Award, a distinction for non-performing industry professionals, will posthumously honor Soul Traincreator and TV host and producer Don Cornelius, who passed away in 2012.
Explore essential tracks from some of the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees below, and tune in to our live broadcast on Apple Music 1, where Apple Music radio hosts Ebro Darden, Rebecca Judd, Matt Wilkinson, Brooke Reese, and Kelleigh Bannen will be joined by Crow and Taupin to discuss their achievements and this year’s celebration.
Willie Nelson
THE BRAIDS, THE smile, the trusty guitar named Trigger, the impassioned activism, the unabashed passion for all things cannabis (and his song about it, “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die”)—there’s a lot to love about Willie Nelson, and fans all over the world can give you several reasons why they’re still showing up to see him sing well into his 90th year. He may have gotten his start singing country western tunes in the ’50s and ’60s, but Nelson hit his stride in the ’70s when he bucked the conventions of Nashville’s Music Row to make the stripped-down country music hewanted to make, the sort that sounded much more at home in a crowded honky-tonk than the Grand Ole Opry. Then, he found kindred spirits in Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and other artists who became the founding fathers of outlaw country, and now he’s mentored and played with younger generations of musicians who keep the outlaw spirit alive in their own way, like Margo Price, Jason Isbell, and Sturgill Simpson. At 90, Nelson’s voice may be a bit more gravelly than it was in his Red Headed Stranger days, but he’s still strumming Trigger with abandon any chance he gets.
George Michael
GEORGE MICHAEL ROSE to fame in the ’80s as one half of the feather-haired duo Wham!, who churned out some of the catchiest radio hits of the decade—namely the jubilant “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” the bittersweet modern holiday ballad “Last Christmas,” and “Careless Whisper,” the sultry single possessing one of the most memorable sax solos of all time. His velvety tenor, boyish charm, and melodic instincts as a songwriter secured his pop star status in Wham!’s heyday, but Michael’s star went supernova with 1987’s Faith, his debut solo album. The title track is one of his eight singles to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; the other seven include his duet with Aretha Franklin, “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” and a version of Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” that features both Michael and the Rocket Man himself. In 1998, Michael came out as a gay man, and he was a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and HIV/AIDS prevention efforts throughout his career. Fans were stunned when Michael passed away unexpectedly in 2016 at the age of 53, but his songs—and his legacy—endure.
Missy Elliott
THERE HAS NOT been a woman rapper in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—until now. “Get Ur Freak On,” “Pass That Dutch,” “Lose Control,” “Work It”—there was a stretch in the early 2000s when Missy Elliott’s beats and bars were inescapable. Her music videos—especially the clip for 1997’s breakthrough single “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” in which she transformed a trash bag into an unforgettable ensemble—were in constant rotation on MTV. Her songs were omnipresent on radio, and earned her a collection of the industry’s highest accolades (including four Grammys and several MTV Video Music Awards). She’s an exceptional rapper, as well as a production genius and lauded songwriter (and one who’s been officially honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame). She’s collaborated with some of the most beloved hitmakers in R&B and pop at large: Aaliyah, Jennifer Hudson, Jazmine Sullivan, Ciara, Nelly Furtado, and many more. In short: Missy Elliott is, and has been, a force to be reckoned with, an MC who can do it all with infinite crossover appeal. And now, to top it all off, she’s making history.
Sheryl Crow
IT’S BEEN NEARLY 30 years since the release of Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow’s debut album, and yet its tunes—“All I Wanna Do,” her first single; the frank and fed-up “Can’t Cry Anymore”; the sparse and stunning “Strong Enough”—remain some of the most beloved in her catalog. That says something, given how busy Crow’s been since: 10 albums followed, as have several songs as beloved as that first batch, from the snarling “If It Makes You Happy” and the profound “Everyday Is a Winding Road” to “Prove You Wrong,” her country-rock anthem featuring Stevie Nicks and Maren Morris. Her writing has always drawn as much from classic rock and folk as it has the licks and conventions of country, and as such she’s carved out a place entirely her own with one foot firmly planted in each genre: She’s as much at home in the studio with Chris Stapleton as she is with Justin Timberlake, and her songwriting chops—not to mention her crystal-clear voice—soar beyond the confines of genre.
Rage Against the Machine
RAGE AGAINST THE Machine has been previously nominated for entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame four times, but the fifth time’s the charm for the righteously deafening rock mainstays. Since forming in 1991, the four-piece has made heavy protest tracks their calling card, with 1992’s unfiltered breakout track “Killing in the Name” and subsequent singles—like “Bulls on Parade,” “Guerilla Radio,” and “Sleep Now in the Fire”—all speaking truth to power while shining a glaring spotlight on the myth of American exceptionalism. Read Rage Against the Machine’s statement regarding their induction in full here:
It is a surprising trajectory for us to be welcomed into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 1991 four people in Los Angeles formed a musical group to stand where sound and solidarity intersect. We called ourselves Rage Against the Machine.  A band who is as well known for our albums as we are for our fierce opposition to the US war machine, white supremacy and exploitation  A band whose songs drove alternative radio to new heights while right wing media companies tried to purge every song we ever wrote from the airwaves A band who shut down the NY Stock Exchange for the first time in its history A band who was targeted by police organizations who attempted to ban us from sold out arenas for raising our voices to free Mumia Abu Jamal, Leonard Peltier and other political prisoners  A band who sued the US State Department for their fascist practice of using our music to torture innocent men in Guantanamo Bay A band who wrote rebel songs in an abandoned, industrial warehouse in the valley that would later dethrone Simon Cowell ’s X-Factor pop monopoly to occupy the number 1 spot on the UK charts and have the most downloaded song in UK history  A band who funded and organized delegations to stand with Mexican rebel Zapatista communities to expose the Mexican government’s war on indigenous people A band whose experimentation in fusing punk, rock and hip-hop became a genre of its own Many thanks to the Hall of Fame for recognizing the music and the mission of Rage Against the Machine. We are grateful to all of the passionate fans, the many talented co-conspirators we’ve worked with and all the activists, organizers, rebels and revolutionaries past, present and future who have inspired our art.
The Spinners
“I’LL BE AROUND,” the immediately recognizable hit from R&B and soul crooners The Spinners, is a groove with with a unique cultural footprint. You can’t hear the subtle drums and telltale chords without humming the chorus in your head: “Whenever you call me, I’ll be there/Whenever you want me, I’ll be there/Whenever you need me, I’ll be there/I’ll be around.” The Spinners are one of a few Detroit soul groups who truly found their groove by leaving Motown. On that label they hit with Stevie Wonder’s “It’s a Shame,” but it took a hook-up with Philadelphia maestro Thom Bell to bring out their best. Bell’s smooth and sumptuous productions were the blueprint for Philly soul, and The Spinners’ Philippe Wynne had the voice to match. Lightly funkified love ballads became their trademark, but they could also draw from gospel on “Mighty Love” and do social commentary on “Ghetto Child.”
Kate Bush
THOUGH FANS OF Kate Bush have been blasting Hounds of Love and the rest of her greatest hits for decades, the reclusive British singer-songwriter saw an unlikely resurgence when her 1985 single “Running Up That Hill” was worked into the supernatural plot of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things last summer. It’s hardly surprising that younger audiences connected with its driving drums and synth-laden, discordant chorus, nor is it shocking that Bush’s robust voice continues to stun listeners when they encounter her signature song—or “This Woman’s Work,” or “Wuthering Heights,” or anything else in her repertoire—for the first time. The list of famous Bush fans is long, and it counts everyone from Adele and Björk to ROSALÍA and Solange, not to mention several artists previously honored by the Rock Hall (like Stevie Nicks, who considered recording her own version of “Running Up That Hill” before realizing she “can’t really do that song better than Kate Bush did”).

The Pact (series) by @coffee-obsessed-writer
I had lost track of this series a while back, but I recently found it again, and I’M SO HAPPY! For those who steer away from smut, the smut is minimal in this series, but the plot is maxxed out!  There’s everything you could want: mystery, intrigue, magic, enemies to lovers, daddy issues, found family, and true love. (The masterlist doesn’t have the two most recent chapters on it, but they are easily found on Jen’s blog.) Only start reading this if you’ve got some time to spare because you won’t want to take a break!
Proud by @waywardnerd67
Tumblr was being a pain and decided that I didn’t need to see any of Nerdy’s tags for me for... *checks calendar* ...FIVE YEARS. I missed a couple of YEARS worth of these little drabbles and ficlets! Well, 2017′s loss is 2022′s gain because I’m getting them all in dribs and drabs, now. This is just one of the dozens of these little stories that are like little, yummy snacks of fics. They’re bite-sized morsels of mostly fluff (there are some that are angst or smut, too) that are perfect for when you’re on the go! Be sure to check them all out!
The New Mrs. Winchester (series) by @percywinchester27
I thought I had already nominated this series, which is my only reason for not having nominated it before!! This is a Sam x Reader AU with so many mysteries that I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens next. We have heard just enough of what has happened in the reader’s past to know it wasn’t pretty, but Sam’s past, and why Dean is nowhere to be found, is still completely unknown. The back half of your chair won’t get much use while you’re reading this because you’ll be on the edge of your seat!

Reluctant Renegade (series) by @deangirl93
I really like how the SPN scenario is completely reversed in this one. I've only just started with it, and the story has already gripped me. I'm curious to see how much more of an anti-hero Dean can be and the reader is very interesting! Looking forward to reading more!

//I knew he received no official award, however, I had no idea anon considered this uk blog's online self promotion tactic as an award, I though they simply mistook his saturn award nomination for a win. 🤣// - oh yea, they've been congratulating him, telling him (and the "awards" account) how much he deserved it, etc etc. But hey, these are the people who act like online poll "wins" are like winning actual awards so I didn't expect much else. They are upset today that he didn't get a critics choice nom but Antony did.
I have no words. I've been rendered speechless. How can they even compare Jens and Anthony? It's like comparing a high schooler to a PHD graduate. 🤭

Scott pilgrim takes off - 96% on rotten tomatoes, just won critics choice award for best animated series…also was really beloved this time by critics and fans.
More of this energy!
But I mean….i guess we can sit here and rehash the fakest looking pap pics in awhile - this one may have Ben checking his phone while kissing JLO or Bradley cooper reading Lolita to suki Waterhouse in the park beat for most “lol”
It’s a shame people don’t really take animated series the same way they do live action. Voice work and animation really deserve more recognition in this industry.
That being said, I also love bluey and expect the show to have many more years of success. SPTO appears to be a one off and I think that’s perfect the way it is.
Lastly - Jen you’re going international??? Please give us a crumb or two where you’ll be heading to!
I respect animation so much! I actually wish real voice actors got more recognition than they do. Or just how many characters they voice in one project. I’ll forever be a Jim Cummings fan. He voices Pooh and Tiger.
But I love seeing praise for animation that isn’t Disney too. Bluey has many more years!
I will be leaving the country for 8 days 😂☺️

The evolution of The Union Jack Dress
Tumblr media
The Union Jack Dress, the dress worn by Ginger Spice [Gerri Halliwell] that marked a fashion moment in the 90s. Previously, I had already done a post about this dress, but I believe it deserves a second part since Gerri wore the dress - obviously in different versions - a few more times. So, I believe I need to bring a second part, as it is one of the most iconic dresses of all time.
The first version of this dress, and also the most famous of it, was used in February 1997, during a performance at the BRIT awards. The dress was designed by Ginger herself and made by her sister, Karen Jennings, who used a tea towel as fabric.
The second version of the dress was in 2007, during a Spice girls reunion tour. In this version the dress was made by Roberto Cavalli, making it more glamorous than the last version. This time, instead of a tea towel, thousands of crystals were used. Gerri tells in an interview with Vogue in 2020 that the dress was a little longer, but that she made a point of asking Cavalli to make it shorter.
The last version of the dress was in 2019, during - until then - a last Spice girls tour. Gabriella Slade was responsible for the outfits for the tour, giving Ginger a floor-length gown embroidered with royal designs and a crown to go with it. In this last version, Gerri wanted something more different than the last two, something timeless, like a queen's dress. Her wish was that the dress conveyed her new phase. Thus transmitting the evolution of Girl Power.

Alternative versions:
There are two more versions of the dress, particularly, i consider them more as alternative versions than a redesigner. Both versions are from 2012.
During a performance by the Spice Girls at the Olympics, Gerri was wearing a little red dress, with the Union Jack flag running the length of the back.
And at an Inauguration of her clothing collection with Street Next.
