Jennifer Pan: The Girl Who Hired Hitmen to Kill Her Parents

Just before midnight on 8th November 2010, a panicked 24-year-old woman named Jennifer Pan made a call to emergency services from her family home in Markham, Ontario. While watching TV in her bedroom, Jennifer overheard multiple people break into the house and confront her parents downstairs, followed by multiple gunshots.

Jennifer told the dispatcher that one of the intruders had come upstairs, tied her hands behind her back and then bound her to the bannister. As she was restrained upstairs, she was unable to provide any eyewitness details on what was happening downstairs. Towards the end of Jennifer's 911 call, a series of gut-wrenching screams for help can be heard in the distance. Jennifer's father - Hann Pan - was alive.

Jennifer seemed genuinely frantic with worry and puts on a convincing performance to the dispatcher. You would not initially believe she had masterminded the entire attack.

Bich Ha and Huei Hann Pan were Vietnamese refugees that settled down in Toronto, Canada. The couple both found employment at an auto manufacturer and worked all hours to provide for their children - Jennifer Pan and Felix Pan. From a very young age, Jennifer and Felix were enrolled in all sorts of classes and activities. Jennifer excelled in piano and ice-skating, much to the delight of her parents. Additionally, she was the perfect student, always getting straight A’s in her report card.

However, when Jennifer did not receive valedictorian in 8th grade, she decided she would stop dedicating her entire life to her studies and decided that she would live a lie to impress her parents instead. When she failed to graduate from high school, she lied to her family and said she passed with flying colours and was accepted into the University of Toronto to study pharmacology. To maintain this charade, Jennifer said she had won tuition scholarships; she even forged report cards and brought home textbooks and notes.

In reality, Jennifer was spending time with her boyfriend, Daniel Wong, and working in a restaurant. As her lies began to crumble around her, Jennifer’s parents forbid her from seeing her boyfriend and confiscated her cell phone, even though she was now 24-years-old. Jennifer soon began to ponder what her life would be like without her strict parents - she would have freedom to do whatever she pleaded, she thought. Jennifer decided she would hire somebody to kill Bich and Huei.

Daniel put Jennifer into contact with David Mylvaganam, Lenford Crawford and Eric Carty. On 8 November, 2010, Jennifer unlocked the front door of the family home before retreating to bed. In the middle of the night, the three men entered and shot Bich and Huei. Afterwards, Jennifer called 911 and wailed that three men had broken in and killed her family and tied her up. However, unbeknownst to her, Huei survived his wounds and was able to tell authorities that his daughter had been in on the whole thing - he had witnessed her chatting with the three men who killed his wife and attempted to kill him.

After being found guilty, they were all sentenced to life imprisonment.

Jennifer Pan was born to Vietnamese refugee parents, Bich Ha and Huei Hann Pan, in Markham, Ontario. As immigrant parents, they set very high expectations for Jennifer. They enrolled her in piano lessons and figure skating from an early age. When that wasn't occupying her time, she was studying. Her parents were very strict, never letting her date or attend social events. The intense pressure Jennifer was put under drove her to self-harm. The aspiring Olympic figure skating champion ended up tearing a ligament when she was 14 and had to give up her dream. 

Throughout high school, Jennifer received average grades, which she knew would not satisfy her parents' expectations. She began forging her report cards to pass off as being a straight-A student to her parents. She ended up failing high school, but forged her high school diploma and faked a letter of acceptance into university for pharmacology. Jennifer went the whole nine yards to maintain her charade, such as purchasing second-hand textbooks and doing research in her fake-major. In reality, she worked part-time as a piano instructor and waitress and lived with her weed dealer boyfriend, Daniel Chi-Kwong Wong.

Her parents became suspicious and eventually discovered the truth. They gave her an ultimatum: either she will move back home and complete her education, and would also be forbidden from contacting her boyfriend, or they would kick her out and cut off their financial support. Jennifer chose the former option and moved back home with her parents. She became severely depressed from not being able to see Wong. 

Jennifer and Wong plotted to hire some hitmen to kill her parents so that she could inherit $500,000 and they could be together at last. On November 8th, 2010, the men entered the home fully armed. After ransacking the home for cash, they then shot both Bich and Hann to death. During the police interview, Jennifer claimed she did not know the assailants and she had been tied up the whole time, managing to free her hands to call 911. After changing her story multiple times, the investigator told her that her father survived his injuries and informed the officer that during the break-in, Jennifer was roaming freely and even conversing with the intruders.

Jennifer was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. She is forbidden from contacting her surviving father ever again.

It's hard to know what to make of Grimaldi's remarks, and the Star doesn't seem to have pushed hard on follow-ups. (One thing the newspaper didn't mention: Grimaldi has written articles for it as recently as 2023.)

Grimaldi is a former Metroland reporter and author of a book about the Pan case.

Futurism has reached out to both Grimaldi and Netflix, but neither has issued a response.

We've already seen our fair share of AI-generated content being used in films and TV. A recent episode of HBO's "True Detective," for instance, featured bizarre, AI-generated posters in the background of a shot.

This was just the latest in a flurry of AI-in-film controversies. This week, the film "Civil War" was lambasted on social media for seemingly using generative AI to create ads for the movie. A source close to the film reportedly told the Hollywood Reporter the posters were made with AI.

"One of the things we've realized is once a piece of media exists, even if it is disclosed [that it's AI generated], it can then be lifted out of any documentary, make its way onto the internet and into other films, and then it's forever part of the historic record," documentarian and Archival Producers Alliance co-founder Rachel Antell told 404 Media.

"If it's being represented as this is a picture of this person, then that's what's going into the historic record," she added. "And it's very hard to pull that back."

(Anakin and Katniss return with Shmi’s body. The sound of the speeder brings everyone rushing out. Anakin carries his mother’s body in his arms, Katniss following him. One by one, Anakin stares at the people who he’d regarded as “good”. Oh… and this is not limited to the Lars family. But let’s start with them. First, Anakin stares down at Cliegg: What’s the advantage of being good if you’re weak and cynical? [added because Anakin is not an ableist in the Mixiverse. I said Anakin is a comfort character, which means that he will always be open to trying to learn how to make things better for the people he comes to care for. This is important for later storylines… that come after the sequel trilogy. 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭] Cliegg looks at the ground, mourning his wife. But Anakin’s thoughts continue: Perhaps you’re wishing you hadn’t given up on her so soon? And he looks over at his stepbrother and his girlfriend, who are both in shock: Maybe my mother never told you about how to be prepared to take care of things? Padmè, also very shocked. Anakin can’t look at her, or Lucy. Or Dorothy. But he can look at the Doctor, who’s very prepared to have an angry face off with Anakin. The young man looks at the Time Lord with a very sharp glare: You want to protect Katniss from me? I should be protecting her from you. Oh. Oh, he’s certainly not letting Naomi off the hook: Am I still a comfort character to you? You knew this would happen, and yet… I still provide comfort to you? You still think I’m good? But his expression softens as he sees Naomi hiding behind the Doctor, very much anxious and scared of him. His heart breaks: I didn’t mean to scare you. I would love to comfort you if you needed it. I just wish I wasn’t a monster right now. Anakin’s attention shifts to Wendy: You’re a terrible mother. How dare you allow Katniss to suffer in silence for this long? And finally, Anakin makes eye contact with Pan, who doesn’t back down. But this only causes the padawan’s resentment towards Pan to grow: You disgust me. You’re the dirt beneath my feet, and you will be punished for your neglect of your children. I hate you, Peter Pan. And I will always hate you for what you’ve done to Katniss and Dorothy. One day… it will come back to bite you in your ass. And I’ll smile when it happens. With those thoughts, Anakin goes inside. Katniss cannot bring herself to look at anyone… especially not her parents)

{Garage, Lars Homestead}

(Padmè and Lucy enter. Padmè holds a tray of food) “I brought you something.” (Beat) “Are you hungry?”

(Anakin doesn’t look at Padmè, continues tinkering) “The shifter broke.” (And his heart) “Life seems seems so much simpler when you’re fixing things.” (He looks to Katniss, addresses her too) “I’m good at fixing things. Always was.” (Back to Padmè) “But I couldn’t…” (It’s breaking him) “Why did she have to die? Why couldn’t I save her? I know I could have.” (He walks to Katniss, kneels down in front of her) “It’s not your fault. Stop thinking that.”

(Katniss doesn’t respond. Padmè replies to the painful question Anakin asked) “Well, sometimes there are things no one can fix. You’re not all powerful, Ani.”

(He stands up, walks to a counter) “Well, I should be.” (Begins to tinker with something else) “Someday, I will be.” (Katniss stands up, can feel Anakin’s anger rising. But she can’t deny that she has rising anger too. Regardless, she walks to Anakin. But when she gets close enough, Anakin looks at her. And he sense that she feels the same as him. Somehow, that makes him feel more in control) “I will be the most powerful Jedi ever.” (He turns to Padmè and Lucy) “I promise you. All of you.” (He glances at Katniss, and he can feel the pain she’s feeling. There’s a sentiment that he shares with her) “I will even learn to stop people from dying.”

(Padmè’s a little scared) “Anakin-“

*georgie Henley intensifies* “Death is a part of life. You stop it-“

“Well, I will stop it!!” (Anakin’s extremely overwhelmed with emotions) “It’s all Obi-Wan’s fault.” (He picks up something) “He’s jealous!” (He throws the thing at the wall) “He’s holding me back!”

“What’s wrong, Ani?”

(It finally hits… and it feels like a brick wall) “I… I killed them. I killed them all.”

(Lucy’s horrified) “Who?”

(Katniss is hit by the same brick wall) “The sand people.” (She feels like she’s going to throw up) “I did nothing to stop it.”

“You tried… and then one of them tried to kill you because you were with me.”

“Maybe you should have let him.”

[Anakin would seriously hate if someone said something like this. Come on now] “I would never let that happen. Never think that again. Promise me you won’t.” (Katniss merely shrugs in response. Anakin turns back to Padmè) “But that one was the last one left, and I killed it. So now they’re all dead.” (He turns to face the two women) “Every single one of them.” (Starts to walk back to the place he was at during the beginning of the scene) “And not just the men. But the women… and the children too.” (Katniss feels her body shaking. The words resonate with her… but because they mean something far different to her) “They were like animals… and I slaughtered them like animals! I HATE THEM!!” [George Lucas, you have my respect. Hence the reason I’m putting this back in] “I don’t wanna hate them!”

(Anakin collapses on the floor in tears. There’s deep shame for what he did, but he knows that’ll never be enough. Padmè kneels beside the padawan) “So you regret it? Killing them?”

*sobbing* “Yes. I wasn’t thinking.”

(Not enough proof) “Anakin-“

“I wish I didn’t do it. I wasn’t thinking. I wish I just left. I was so angry-“

“Well… to be angry is to be human. You said that you regret it. That’s good.”

“I still did it. To control your anger is to be a Jedi.”

“But you’re human, and you regret it.”

(Katniss is still not over Padmè’s words) “The Doctor’s not a human. He gets angry all the time.”

(Padmè realizes her mistake) “Well… what I meant to say was-“

“Padmè, why do you think they call him the Oncoming Storm?”

(Anakin speaks up) “No. I’m a Jedi. I know I’m better than this.”

(Padmè does her best to comfort him) “I know that. You know I know that.”

“I don’t wanna turn into something I’m not.” (As soon as he says those words, he realizes that it hurts Katniss) “I’m sorry.”

(Padmè doesn’t understand) “Ani-“

“Katniss, I’m sorry.” (As he sees the Mockingjay stand up, he senses the pain coming from her) “I know I’m not Peeta… but I’m still scared. You’ll help me, won’t you? You’re supposed to guide me. Please guide me?”

(Katniss nods) “I won’t let anything happen to you, Anakin.” [😞 a fatal flaw. Poor Katniss]

*aw, f*ck* “Heyyyy.” (Everyone looks up to see… the Doctor. He looks… very awkward) “How y’all doin’?”

(Katniss shakes her head) “What the hell are you doing?”

“I need to talk to you outside, Katniss. It’s kind of urgent.”

(She sighs, follows him. Padmè is confused when her… boyfriend?… stands up) “Ani, where are you going?”

(Anakin sniffles, decides to follow Katniss. But he remains hidden, listening to the Doctor talk to his companion)
