A little homage post to these two absolute gems of legends from Les Miserables. The Thenardiers played by Alun Armstrong & Jenny Galloway.
They were the villains in the story, who also provided some fantastic comedy moments especially in their performance of Master of The House which is one of my favourite songs and a fantastic number to sing and sway along to.

Les Misérables: Beggars At The Feast
from The Dream Cast in Concert (10th Anniversary, 1995) with Alun Armstrong as Thénardier and Jenny Galloway as Mme. Thénardier
Beggar at the feast, master of the dance Life is easy pickings if you grab your chance Everywhere you go, law-abiding folk Doing what is decent but they're mostly broke
Singing to the Lord on Sundays Praying for the gifts he'll send But we're the ones who take it We're the ones who make it in the end
Watch the buggers dance, watch 'em till they drop Keep your wits about you and you'll stand on top Masters of the land, always get our share Clear away the barricades and we're still there
We know where the wind is blowing Money is the stuff we smell And when we're rich as Croesus Jesus, won't we see you all in hell!

I found some old character/pairing lists on my long-defunct journal and they amused me so I am reposting them here.
Main thoughts: I have no idea why I thought I was most like Vicky, I like June a lot now, and 2024 me really wishes that there was way more Jim/Anyone than there is.
2011 Fandom Survey
Favourite male: Rod Skase. Always. He had so much innate ability, but he always cocked things up because he was too busy trying to look good. Favourite female: Viv Martella. She was such a brilliant character. She was in the show back when female officers were still a rarity and she dealt with the male characters' doubt in her abilities by showing, time and time again, that she could cope with anything the job threw at her while retaining her sense of humour and ability to care. Least favourite: Ugh, so many of the post-shark-jumping characters and the awful changes made to formerly-good characters. I'm going to run with the changed version of John Boulton, though, because the proper John Boulton was one of my absolute favourites and they absolutely ruined his character by making him into something else entirely. In a way, it was good that they killed him off (although HOW they killed him off was also ridiculous), because it hurt to watch such a fantastic character being so utterly ruined. Thank goodness Rod went out in a way that was perfect for who he was, staying in character from beginning to end. Who resembles me: Vicky Hagen. Three more characters that I like: Frank Burnside, Cass Rickman, Roy Galloway. SO MANY MORE. Favourite ship: Skase/Boulton. Pre-ruining of Boulton, thankyouverymuch.
2009 Favourite Characters List
CID * Rod Skase (duh) * John Boulton * Roy Galloway * Tom Proctor * Frank Burnside * Jack Meadows * Ted Roach * Alan Woods * Liz Rawton * Viv Martella * Alistair Grieg Uniform * Taffy Edwards * Matt Boyden * Steve Loxton * Reg Hollis * Yorkie Smith * Cass Rickman * Vicky Hagen * Nick Klein * Dale Smith (as he was the first time around) * Andrew Monroe * Gina Gold * Sam Harker * Bob Cryer * Derek Conway * Gary Best * Jim Carver (as in old-time Jim, not drunk!Jim)
2006 Fandom Survey
Favorite "Characters": Rod Skase, John Boulton, Tom Proctor, Gary Best, Frank Burnside, Mike Dashwood, Reg Hollis Least Favorite "Characters": June Ackland, Debbie McAllister, a large proportion of the cast that came in the couple of years following the Great Sun Hill Barbeque Favorite Ships: Rod/John, Rod/Tom, Des/Reg, Nick/Smiffy, Cass/Vicky Ships that make me nauseous: Oh God, the Dave/Jenny/George rubbish. Also anything that paired together people who had worked together for years without showing any interest in each other. Names commonly involved with this? Jim, June, Tony & Polly.
2002 Fandom Survey
Favorite Pairings: Skase/Boulton Skase/Proctor Boulton/Proctor Meadows/Monroe Stamp/Ashton Klein/Smith Hagan/Boyden Pairings I’m dying to write: Klein/Smith Pairings I’m not keen on reading: Jim/Anyone

Actors who appear in adaptations of both "Les Misérables" and "A Christmas Carol"
Because of course there's some overlap. Just for fun I thought I’d list them.
Fredric March: Jean Valjean in the 1935 Hollywood film/Scrooge in the 1954 TV Christmas Carol
Frank Finlay: Jean Valjean in the 1967 BBC miniseries/Marley’s Ghost in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Angela Pleasance: Fantine in the 1978 British film/The Ghost of Christmas Past in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Caroline Langrishe: Cosette in the 1978 British film/nephew Fred’s wife Janet in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott
Meredith Braun: Éponine in the London and UK Tour productions of the musical, 1992-93/Belle in The Muppet Christmas Carol, 1992
Dominic West: Jean Valjean in the 2018 BBC miniseries/nephew Fred in the 1999 TV Christmas Carol with Patrick Stewart
Fra Fee: Courfeyrac in the 2012 musical film/voice of nephew Fred (or rather Harry, as he’s renamed) in the 2022 animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
Olivia Colman: Mme. Thénardier in the 2018 BBC miniseries/voice of the Ghost of Christmas Past in the 2022 animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
Johnny Flynn: Félix Tholomyés in the 2018 BBC miniseries/voice of Bob Cratchit in the 2022 animated Scrooge: A Christmas Carol
And 2004's A Christmas Carol: The Musical features many veterans from productions of Les Mis on the West End stage.
Claire Moore (Mrs. Fezziwig): Fantine in 1993, Mme. Thénardier in 2006
Ruthie Henshall (Scrooge's mother): Fantine in 1992 and in the 1995 10th Anniversary Concert
Linzi Hately (Mrs. Cratchit): Éponine in 1988 (and the prerecorded voice of Éponine’s scream from then on), Mme. Thénardier in 2012, and a “Turning” woman in the 2012 film
Gay Soper (Charwoman #1 at the Royal Exchange): Mme. Thénardier in 1988 and on the Complete Symphonic Recording
Jenny Galloway (Charwoman #2 at the Royal Exchange): Mme. Thénardier many times
Dave Willetts (one of the charity solicitors): Jean Valjean in London 1988-1993, and in Australia, 1997-1998
There are more too (if I'm not mistaken, the actor who plays Young Marley was understudying Marius in London at the time), but these are all the names I can think of.
And two more indirect Christmas Carol connections from the 1967 BBC Les Misérables:
Michele Dotrice (Fantine): wife of Edward Woodward, the Ghost of Christmas Present in the 1984 TV Christmas Carol with George C. Scott.
Eileen Moore (Mme. Victurnien): wife of George Cole, Young Scrooge in the 1951 Scrooge with Alastair Sim
If anyone can think of any more, please let me know!

Les miserables 25th anniversary concert ramin karimloo
Tumblr media
The split level set with the superb 50 piece orchestra clearly visible above, and the various, huge stairways and multiple other entrance ways allowed it to be more like a fully costumed, theatre staging whereby performers could enter and exit as their roles demanded instead of being seated on stage awaiting their turn. The staging, in fact, ensured that it was rather more than a concert. This was to be the concert of all concerts for any Les Mis fan, with uber-spectacular, epic staging and lighting and a cast to die for. A buzz of excitement and anticipation rippled through the massive arena audience as the first familiar, pounding notes electrified the air. The video of the 10th Anniversary Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert has sold well over one million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling musical videos in the UK.We all knew Sunday 3rd October 2010 would be an evening we would remember for the rest of our lives but not one of us could have imagined just how utterly extraordinary it would be. There have been 34 cast recordings of "Les Miserables", including the multi-platinum London cast recording and the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast and complete symphonic albums. Les Miserables has been seen by over 56 million people worldwide in 42 countries and in 21 languages. It is adapted by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. It has lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with original text by Alain Boublil and additional material by James Fenton. Les Miserables, which concerns Love and bravery in 19th century France during the revolutionary struggles, is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, based on the novel by Victor Hugo. When Les Miserables celebrated its 21st London birthday on 8 October 2006, it became the world's longest running musical, surpassing the record previously held by "Cats" in the West End. Originally opening at the Barbican Theatre on, the Cameron Mackintosh/Royal Shakespeare Company production transferred to the Palace Theatre on 4 December 1985 and moved to its current home at the Queen's Theatre on 3 April 2004, where it is currently taking bookings to. Les Miserables, played its 10,000th performance in the West End on Tuesday. Original costumes by Andreane Neofitou, additional costumes by Christine Rowland, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Mick Potter. The concert at O2, and the Barbican production is directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell and designed by Matt Kinley. Les Miserables will be making theatrical history with an international first - three different productions in London at the same time - the new touring production of Les Miserables will play the Barbican Theatre (where it originally premiered in 1985), from 14 Sep to and the original show continues to run at the Queen's Theatre Ramin and Samantha will join the previously announced company of over 300 actors and musicians, including Alfie Boe (Jean Valjean), Nick Jonas (Marius), Norm Lewis (Javert), Matt Lucas (Thénardier), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Camilla Kerslake (Cosette) and the casts of the Original Production at the Queen's Theatre, the New 25th Anniversary Production at the Barbican, London and members of the Original 1985 London cast. Ramin Karimloo, (currently starring as 'The Phantom' in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies" at the Adelphi Theatre) will play 'Enjolras' and Samantha Barks (currently playing 'Eponine' at the Queen's Theatre) will play 'Eponine' in the 25th Anniversary Concert at The O2. Further casting has been announced for Les Miserables in Concert, which takes place at the O2 on Sunday (1.30pm & 7pm), as part of the show's 25th Anniversary celebrations.

Things I noticed after rewatching TAC for the nth time:
- Philip Quast's eyes were shaky af. He kept on looking thru the crowd in high speed and his eyes looked as if he's kinda scared?? OH btw, he said he has a terrible stage fright so it must be its manifestation of it His eyes were shaky especially during Fantine's Arrest. And Quastvert's eyes started to get steady starting from Confrontation to his succeeding appearances
-PQ is fidgety and he's fidgeting with his baton. I noticed that he's one of the few with a hand props so I initially thought that they don't really need to bring their props. But PQ has his trusty baton because maybe he needs something to fidget on???
-Also hhhh this one is cute and adorable!! Look at how PQ sits like that to keep his baton in place while he clapped for Ruthie after her I Dreamed a Dream. Prim and proper Quastvert 😭
Tumblr media
-Quastvert widened his eyes to emphasise that he won't take any protestations from Fantine during her arrest.
-Colm and Philip were so synchronized at the last piano bit of the Confrontation after the I am from the gutter too part, it's so darn cute. They both staggered backwards or something and they're so in synch lmaoo
-Michael Ball and Philip Quast kept on laughing in the back during Master of the House xD it's so adorable!! Michael looks like your classmate who would talk to you endlessly even if you wanna listen to the lesson completely distracting you😂
-Rare moments that PQ smiles in the bg bec he always have this =_= look almost the whole time
Tumblr media
-PQ hid his face under the brim of his hat before waiting for his turn to sing Stars. The man was internalising and calling Javert's spirit to possess him for that performance 😭He sat on his seat unmoving like a statue for a few seconds before Colm patted his knee. VALVERT CRUMBS???!!
-PQ didn't just adjust the mic subtly like what he did during Fantine's arrest but he dead ass took the whole mic and put it on a podium so it's close to his mouth before he sang Stars😂😭
-Oh that face PQ made during MUST PAAAYYY THE PRICCCCCEEE is chef's kiss. And his eyes are so pale-- I love it😭💞
-Quast never broke character, Javert didn't leave his body even after earning a big round of applause after his Stars performance which lasted for a lotssss of seconds.
-Michael Ball is sooooo cute and precious whenever he talks about Cosette during Red and Black. So the face he made after Enjolras told him that their little lives don't count at all is akin to a kicked puppy🥺 Oh Marius....
-Michael Maguire kept on wrapping his arm around Judy Kuhn's (Adult Cosette) seat. Maybe he does that for comfort so he wouldn't cramp himself in his seat because all their seats were way too close to each other, it was probabky uncomfy for them.
-Colm and Philip lookin like husbands checking out their daughter's suitor during In My Life. They're both leaning near each other and smiling at Michael while the latter straightens his coat.
-Michael sweats a lot!! Especially during Heart Full of Love. And again, Colm and Philip smiling so proudly at Michael and Judy when they went My name is Marius Pontmercy~~and Mine's Cosette. IT'S SO FCKIN CUTE!!! What are they proud dads?? 😭💞
-Mme. Thenardier elbowed M. Thenardier to stand up before the gang robs Valjean's house😂😭 I'd like to think that Jenny did that so Alun won't miss his cue
-Okay so during One Day More, all those who shares a mic were standing next to each other, close to each other, except for Valvert. Quast was standing a step behind Colm and he only stepped beside the latter when Maguire started singing.
Tumblr media
-Quast broke his character after One Day More. He was smiling from ear to ear when they all bowed signalling the end of first act.
-Okay. Quast again. So he's a tall guy right? Tall guys = long legs right??? I laughed how he stood up and did this quick and long strides from his seat to a mic when he's about to feed the students some wrong info about the barricade attack. It was so quick and it took him like 3 big steps from his seat to a mic😂😭😂😭
-I never really paid much attention in anything without Valvert before. So it is only now that I noticed the chemistry between Michael Ball and Lea Salonga🥺
-Lea was clutching onto Michael during A Little Fall of Rain. She would also flinch and gasp and hold onto Michael's arm like greatly showing to the audience that Eponine didn't wanna die alone, she's scared to die alone. And she felt the need to hold onto someone tightly to know that she's, in fact, not alone.
-Michael would also hold her tightly as if to say I'm here, you're not alone. And my heart😭😭 it's making me cry buckets hhh
-Alun was sitting all alone in the back during the barricade scene.
-OHHH!!! Quastvert lookin like he was a kitten grabbed by its scruff when Gavroche denounced him as a spy😭😭
Tumblr media
-So I always go ooga booga whenever I watch Stars because we all know that Quast has one big set of a lungs. And bec of that I always forget that Colm has a big set of lungs too and that his last bit of Bring Him Home is a proof.
-Colm can shape his lips into a heart😭
-A few minutes after Javert's suicide, Quast was wraping his arm around Colm's seat while they talked like hhh it's so cute :')
-During Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, the part when the fallen barricade boys were like parading behind Michael while the latter was singing his heart out, we could see some Valvert moments right there again izzo cute😭💞 sorry my heart is somft for the old men,, for the Valvert :'3
Tumblr media
-Michael also have this adorable way of standing up and I'm living for it🥺💞 he's like leaning backwards while standing I I can't explain it but it's so cute too
Tumblr media
-During Dog Eats Dog, that part where the tune and melody is similar to Master of the House, I saw Quast crossing his legs like what he and Michael did during Master of the House. Him and Michael were laughing😂😭😂😭 istg I could see Marius and Javert being besties bec of them
-During Beggars at the Feast, Philip Quast is at the background being a cute blowfish😂
Tumblr media
-Young Cosette was in the last song. The one in barricade heaven but hhhh Javert wasn't there. I mean I know he committed suicide and it's basically a sin and that would forfeit his place in heaven but hear me out!! If Young Cosette who wasn't dead, bec obviously Adult Cosette was still alive and happily married to Marius, is in the heaven part, I'm guessing the directors?? did that for idk performance purposes?? Aesthetic??? Then why didn't they just let Javert, why didn't they just let PQ sing with them instead of sitting awkwardly in the bg, looking behind him (in the orchestra???) why oh why??? Don't you want another majestic voice singing along with everyone else? 😭😭
Tumblr media
-Lea Salonga was like the ultimate fangirl for all the cast😂💞 she's so cute and she's the one who claps like there's no tomorrow and she keeps on whoo-ing in the bg for everyone😂😂
-Michael Ball was like whooping his arm when Colm bowed during the curtain call, Philip Quast did this little jump for Colm (while clapping) and so in summary: the two men were so hyper lmaooo😂😂
-Poor Judy Kuhn was stuck between MB and PQ like :3 while the two were being the biggest fanboys for Colm. Ruthie was whistling while Lea and Michael Maguire were clapping calmly😭😭
-So there were like 17 Valjeans that will do the encore right?? These Valjeans came from the back of the audience. They were the only ones I noticed before and I didn't notice the little Gavroches bearing each of the Valjeans' flags hcnxjsksks izzo cute. It's like a nightmare for Javert, imagine 17 Gavroches in one place???? Chaos. Nightmare.
Bonus: Precious Valvert!!
