1, 16, 17 for fandom asks 🖤
1 - if you could hit any character without repercussions, who would it be?
od!n bors0n, that motherfucker (mcu version. comics version is alright). we do not stan abusive fathers. causing my faves to have unaddressed trauma...come on man. also he’s a colonizer who kidnaps babies of populations he committed near-genocide upon and erases their culture. yuck. i don’t really have any qualms about slapping this old man. anyways yeah can you tell i hate 0din? this is one of the very few characters i hate. i don’t typically hate characters at all, lmao. but 0din’s an exception, lmao.
16 - do you block people who like fandoms/characters/ships that you dont?
no, but i do unfollow them if they are vocal about disliking mine, unless we are very close or have been following each other for a looonnng time (you know who you are lol), in which case i just ask them to tag their ship/character hate. if they just like other things though that i don’t like, i don’t really care, because my squicks are pretty limited and i don’t care what people ship or like!
17 - are there any tropes you wished were used less often?
not a fan of im not like other girls or caterpillar-to-butterfly transformation. though this is less common in fanfic rather than in media. i think?
ask me about fandom shit :P

36 & 56 for book asks 🖤
36. Favourite YA novel?
I was going to say A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge although it looks like that may be considered middle grade instead.  Either way, it’s a very lovely book, beautifully written and with an intriguing setting and storyline.  I’ve enjoyed all the other Hardinge books I’ve read as well.  Even the ones set on earth (most of them are not) have such a unique look at the world.
I think Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter is more specifically YA and I loved that one too.  It’s WEIRD in a way that I’ve loved for a long, long time.  It’s set on earth, but there are bizarre things going on that in so many ways are just treated as…how things are?  In certain ways it reminds me of the Wayside School books I loved as a child. Vassa in the Night is set in New York City, but has Russian faerie tale influence, the most key one being the fact there’s a very dangerous all night convenience store called B.Y.s that dances on chicken legs *L*
56. What is the cheesiest book you’ve read?
Sunday at Tiffany’s by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet.  Patterson received the main billing on this, but I’m not sure who really wrote the bulk of it given some things I’ve seen since about his co-author approach.
Patterson is the author of the Alex Cross crime thrillers, such as Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls.  Sunday at Tiffany’s is not aaaaaanywhere in that genre.  It features a little girl who has an imaginary friend, Michael.  Jane grows up and is not a happy woman, lots of issues in her life.  We also find out that imaginary friends are in fact real.  As in, it is a job that people have, people who are not human, but nevertheless exist.  Overall, the book is enormously cheesy and I finished reading it mainly out of a transfixed sense of horror.
The most hilarious part is, imaginary friends can eat whatever junk food they want and Michael does.  He turns human at the end of the story (he and adult Jane have fallen in love), which you learn when he collapses and is taken to the hospital because, as an actual human, the cumulative health effects of all the shit food he’s eaten for ages comes swarming in all at once and he needs…major heart surgery or something?  I vaguely recall the doctors being baffled that someone who looked the age he did could possibly have had a heart in such condition.
The best part about this book is I got my dad to read it afterwards by asking him if he’d like to read a James Patterson book I’d picked up, given he’d read the Alex Cross series.  Ohh, the aghast reaction after he read it :D We still wind each other up by reminiscing about that book.
Thanks for the ask!!

“I know you don't believe in-in religion-the same way I do, but you can believe you're surrounded by people who love you, can't you?" His eyes were wide, hopeful. They were the same dark brown they had always been, but different now, as if another layer had been added to their color, the same way his skin seemed both poreless and translucent at the same time.”
Happy Passover, the best way to celebrate it is with an edit for my favorite Jewish vampire shadowhunter.✡︎

@storyseekers event 13: florals -> Cordelia Carstairs-Daisies
“Daisy. She seem to blaze like a torch. James had always known she was beautiful-How he always known? Had there been a moment he had realized it? – But still the sight of her hit him like a blow. She was all fire, or heat and light, from the gold silk roses woven into her dark red hair to the ribbons and beads on her golden dress. The hilt of Cortana was visible over her left shoulder; the straps that secured it had been fashioned from thick gold ribbons.”

The Potential Life of Addie Larue
(And How It Was Thwarted By The Final Chapter)
If you haven’t already read this post by @bluebellss1 I would highly recommend reading that first because it was what inspired this one (I was going to reblog and add on to the original post, but my own interpretation got so long I thought it might be easier to make a new one 🙈).
I love everything about the above mentioned post. And while I’m not a huge fan of shipping characters based off of themes/motifs (I’d rather ship them based on in-text evidence), I’ll admit there’s something that should have been super satisfying about Addie/Luc, but that the ending of TILOAL failed to provide for its characters and readers.
As bluebellss said, Addie represents the stars, and the symbolism for this is not at all subtle. The recurring phrase “a constellation of stars” in reference to Addie is evidence enough, and I believe Schwab even described Addie as a “girl made of stars” in an Instagram post before the book was released.
We know Luc is the night/darkness. We’re told this point blank, time and time again throughout the book.
So when is the only time we ever truly see stars? At night. And what is darkness if we don’t have light to compare it to? Nothing.
Additionally, Addie named Luc during their second or third encounter. Luc is a given name of French origin meaning “man of Lucania”. Lucania is a region of Italy, and its name is derived from the Latin word “lux” meaning “light”. Thus, Luc literally means “man of light”. Which, we could posit, translates to “man of Addie’s” (or “Addie’s Luc”) in reference to the text.
But I think the most conclusive evidence for the depth of Luc’s feelings for Addie makes itself known in the details of the bargains he makes.
He is a god, or something like it at least. And he made Addie into something nameless, faceless (at least in photographs and memories—but gods have been known to appear in art, music, and literature, just as Addie learns she can), immortal, and forgotten.
All of which sound like fundamental aspects of life for a “God of Old”.
We could take this to mean that, even if it was only on a subconscious level, Luc wanted someone to experience life as he did. He wanted someone to understand him. And as understanding is the foundation for love, we could also suppose that he wanted someone to love him.
Just as Addie wanted someone to love her. Luc states during one of their earlier anniversaries that he appears in the form best suited to the eye of the beholder in their darkest hour. In Henry’s case, Luc appears as his older brother, or someone very similar. But in Addie’s darkest hour, she needed her imaginary lover from her sketches.
So that is who Luc became.
Luc’s deal with Henry works as further evidence of his desire to be understood. Through their bargain, Luc made Henry into someone who appears exactly how others want to see him, exactly who they need in that moment. They see what they want to see, even if that’s not who he truly is. This kind of existence, we learn from Henry, is a very lonely one.
Perhaps Luc thought to shape Henry in his image because if Addie could come to understand and love a boy like Henry, who only she could see for who he truly is, and if she could also learn to love a life like hers (which is also like his), a life of being forgotten, then she could understand and love someone/thing like Luc—couldn’t she?
and finally, Addie and Luc are nameless and faceless and forgotten except to each other. If we can only see the stars at night, and Addie gave Luc a name (something he probably never had before her), an original face (not of someone else’s likeness), and a purpose (apart from being the Incessant Bounty Hunter of Lost Souls), then the only time they truly exist as themselves is with each other.
They hold each other up in their own existences, like the night does the stars.
However, as bluebellss said, this all seems to be nullified with the last chapter of the book. Or at least, it presents Addie’s character arc as decidedly neutral.
In the end, Addie is the same as she’s always been—determined to leave a mark and hate Luc forever. Henry, like all of Addie’s loves before him, is reduced to a tool through which her mark can be made. The only one who seems to change at all is Luc, who is still vague enough to the audience as to incite at least two bloggers into desperately scouring the text for conclusive evidence that our time spent reading wasn’t for naught.
****
Thanks to @jessacarstairs for sending me the original post, and again to @bluebellss1 for writing theirs and inspiring this one!
