Can you share your thoughts on Upstead? How bad was the exit? I'm afraid to watch this episode. :(
Its so hard to really express what the hell happened last night especially because it was so avoidable.
I think the biggest issue I take with it is the complete 180 spin in character. Jay spent season 7 to season 9 pushing back on everything Voight did - every move, every frame of thought- he was the moral compass for the show, even when Hailey was falling down the wrong path he was the one telling her that it wasn't right and that she didn't want to be Voight.
To then suddenly start the 10th season with Jay being so out of character that he has become unrecognizable was so baffling. Its one thing if they had been setting this up for his character over the entire season, but they weren't and they didn't. They just strung him up with this new persona and asked the audience to play stupid and just accept it. And the one thing i HATE the most is when writers treat their audiences like they're stupid and that's exactly what the CPD writers did with Jay.
The other issue is how they wrote him out. The narrative around Jesse leaving is foggy - he apparently wanted to leave but he's been on set for the past week. To some he was fired although there is not enough evidence to frankly support any narrative at this point, which is confusing because one of those truths determines when the writers knew he was leaving and would give time to the story line. Truthfully the haste in story telling for Jay sort of leans more towards it being something that sort of just happened at the top of the season rather than months ago, which if it were something they'd known months ago means they could've written a better exit for him....but they didn't, so I don't know.
I think even with a surprise that Jesse was leaving there was still time for them to write out the character with dignity not disgrace like they did. They could've fed an Army story line in the first episode that would've tracked throughout his final episodes to get him where he ended up, which is a wonderful storyline for the character. He felt the call back to the Army to help make a difference and re-affirm his belief in the cause. I even understand his reason to Hailey - the Army is black and white- you know who are the good and who are the bad (truthfully this statement isn't factual- its still human beings but for the sake of the narrative - its believable coming from Jay), and this is a character trait for Jay that has always existed...except for in these final episodes.
Not to mention...he didn't even say goodbye to the rest of the team, really? After 10 years its just a walk out? And Voight is the last person he says goodbye too? Just no. Its semantics in that moment for filming reasons but still - it just came off as a quick exit, the writers needed something that would speak to his character but needed to be quick and thats how it has felt. Which is why him leaving is so hard because he was so OOC all three episodes and to watch a character like Jay who is a pillar, a leader just stop being that for no reason and then to just leave....it wasn't right. I think even with a small amount of time the writers could've done more, they could've done better is the honest answer.
I don't know where the show goes from here - naturally they'll have Hailey struggle which is great material for Tracy but I am so tired of watching women suffer in such harsh ways - its just uncomfortable.
They left his ending open ended which I am grateful for, I think the writers recognized that they couldn't kill Jay, that would just be one step too far to come back from. I am thankful for that at least. So who knows maybe he'll return at some point.
I jokingly said to my friend yesterday that these shows are so formulaic its almost inevitable that what we'll see of Hailey is her struggling all season and by season end making the choice to take her ring off because Jay is not coming back - next season lightly treading with a new love interest of sorts only for Jay to return.

Why I think Sid is the father
Possible hints from the show (not the obvious and usually stated ones + not hints that could also apply to other contenders):
- When Sophie enters Pemberton’s to switch phones back with Sid, the engagement party crowd thought she was Hannah
- Sid remembered how much Tinder dates Sophie went on; he paid attention to her well (more on this later)
- Sophie and Sid both experienced relationship problems then found each other at the same time and same place. Sid later gave Sophie advice about finding the right person (funny enough, the advice parallels the situation because Sophie and Sid found each other at the right time to give each other advice)
- Two of Sophie’s by far most important love interests are connected to Sid—Jesse who is Sid’s best friend, and Drew who is a close friend of Sid’s wife
- Sophie remembers the Electric Slide; this time she is proven to pay attention to him
- If the father isn’t Jesse and Sophie is still married to the father, only Sid would be the perfect candidate to be understanding on why Jesse’s photo is on Sophie’s wall since he is Sid’s best friend
- The father is hinted to have loved Valentine’s Day even before he and Sophie even got together. Unlike the other guys, Sid’s memory for Valentine’s Day was always consistently good. Additionally, when Hannah walked in Pemberton’s to surprise Sid, only Sophie’s reaction was the focus
- Sophie and Sid both remember random facts they found out about each other offscreen; once again solidifying that they do pay attention to each other
- Sid somehow is the only character who has profound or notable interactions with both of Sophie’s parents
- Since we know that Sophie narrates the story, it’s important to note that she often emphasizes Sid’s stories by giving us in-depth insight despite their minimal interactions in episodes before 02x13. While she also does this for her other friends, it’s only Sid’s stories that we actually see play out long. To add, Sophie always paints Sid in a positive light in her stories
- EDIT: I forgot to add that the possibility that Sid’s last name not being revealed might also allude to Sophie’s future last name. Given, women can keep their names, but let’s not forget the possibility. Because of societal norms, women usually take their husband’s family name. If Sophie is indeed still married to the father in the future and took his last name, we can see why she won’t tell the audience her current last name. If Sid then happens to be the father and husband, it’s a strong possibility. In HIMYM, it was not needed to hide the maiden name of the possible mothers because it was Ted telling the story.
Parallels & Connections with HIMYM/Ted and Tracy:
- Alliteration names (Ted Mosby and Tracy McConnell, Sophie and Sid—if Sid’s last name also starts with a letter “T” like Tompkins then that would be interesting)
- Both are romantics. Sophie is a hopeless romantic who can’t find “the one” like Ted, while Sid is a committed romantic who is (and possibly going to be was) in a longterm relationship
- Sophie and Sid swap phones, paralleling the yellow umbrella swap
- Sophie and Sid’s banters are very similar to that of Ted and Tracy’s
- Sid has Ted’s old room
- In connection to a point from the previous section, Sophie painting Sid in a picture that’s so positive and feeling untainted is very similar to how Ted paints Tracy in his stories—perfect, an angel, someone who no one could say something bad about
- Not directly related to HIMYM, but in the original HIMYM spin-off (How I Met Your Dad), the lead character Sally met the dad as she was preparing to get divorced. The script of this scrapped spin-off was reworked into HIMYF. I’m not saying it’s a direct answer, but what if the divorce storyline is gonna go to HIMYF’s only married main character father prospective?
Now for personal feelings, I just think that out of all the guys, Sid is really the most “the father of my child” material for Sophie. His personality is so well-suited for her and they both have the same outlook in life. I know that the obvious is Jesse, but something in me is really screaming that it isn’t him. Now, I’m still on a limbo if Sophie and the father are still together in the future, but whether they are or not, I am gonna stick by with Sid as the father.

Fist off, all the love to Tracy. She's been an absolutely wonderful, dynamic, awesome addition to CPD. Best of luck to her in whatever she decides to do next.
Secondly, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOLF ENTERTAINMENT, DO RIGHT BY HER! DO YOU HEAR ME? GIVE HER AND JAY THE ENDING, CLOSURE, AND HAPPINESS THEY FUCKING DESERVE! These characters have been through hell on their own and as a couple. And their trauma as a couple was for no reason whatsoever. Do better. Do right by them and do right by Tracy. Don't bull the same bull with her that you did with Jesse.

“She hasn't been protected a day in her life. Doesn't know that she can be, that she should be.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just do not understand how a show and a writer’s room that has been building this protection arc for Hailey from literally her first DAY on the show would find that it makes any sense at all to do this.
I get that Jay is not coming back and they want some kind of fresh slate or “phoenix rising from the ashes” story for Hailey now. That they want to start fresh (I don’t agree with it, but I see that’s their current ridiculous angle).
Thinking we’ll believe she’ll emerge from this stronger and better is insulting our intelligence. They took two of the most reserved characters and built trust. She was still trusting and loving him in this last ep. So you took a woman who has a history of abuse, brutalized her for an ep, kicked her while she was down, and then forced her through Voight to question the “one good thing” after you destroyed that thing by assassinating Jay’s character.
Tracy is the best actress in a generation and the writers are relying on her to act them out of a corner again and again. She’ll make us believe whatever they put on a page.
But, it’s the most amateur of storytelling. I feel like I am reading a “choose your own adventure” book vs. watching one of the top rated shows on network TV. As much as I adored Jay, this is not about wanting him back.
The main tenet of shows is to realize that strong shows respect the stories and the characters they built. So keep that loyalty to the ones on the screen still, like Hailey. Even non-upstead stans and casual watchers are perplexed. That’s a sign that no one gets it.
I’ll watch this show as long as Tracy is on it because I enjoy watching a masterclass every week even if she is in the background, but the direction of the storylines on all fronts feel decidedly amateur and that’s a shame. We could have continued with an enjoyable procedural post Jesse exit, and the OOC character plays are just downright distracting now.
