Half meme post, half actual theory.

In “Hollow Mind,” we see that Philip/Belos was experimenting with his coven brands during an attack he staged against a town located on the Knee. These prototype brands prematurely drained the magic of the witches who were branded, and he left them there to die in the freezing cold.

This was pretty early on in his carrier as a prophet for the Titan. He likely wasn’t taken very seriously. Especially if he wasn’t leaving much in the way of survivors to spread word of the “wild witches” who were supposedly behind these attacks. So, when traders, or guards, or whoever stumbled onto the towns he’d attacked, and see a bunch of bodies drained of their magic, what are they going to end up believing just from what they can see in front of them? They’re going to assume that basilisks, the only species known to be able to drain magic, were behind everything.

Basilisks are said to have gone extinct a few centuries before the present day, which does line up somewhat. Philip started on his crusade something like 340-ish years ago.

The basilisks were misblamed for his crimes, despite him trying to sell the “wild magic is bad” narrative. Eventually, when the basilisks are killed off in retaliation and there is no one left to blame for the continued attacks, that’s when the witches start to take the guy claiming it’s Wild Witches a bit more seriously.

The irony being, Belos unintentionally gets the basilisks killed when they get credit for his work, but he then had to go on to resurrect the species to study them and their ability to drain magic to improve his coven brands later down the line. Their very existence delayed the spread of his false message, and now he has to go to the trouble of bringing a few back to life to further his plans? You just know that doubly irritated him.

What do you guys think of this theory? Can any of you guys get Dana on the phone, it’s like, the one thing I want to ask her, because it just makes so much sense to me.
