Also top three met gala looks. Go
Okay I didn’t hate this year as much as I have hated other years. The lukewarm/boring theme kind of made the lack of effort feel less obvious to me?
I really like Dua Lipa, Kristen Stewart, Jessica Chastain, Lil Nas X, Jeremy Pope, and Ke Huy Quran’s looks were all in my top 10.
I think everyone missed the mark though (and maybe wouldn’t have been allowed by Anna Wintour) to use the clothes to criticize Lagerfeld. The only one who came close was Lizzie by…just…existing in a fat woman’s body and wearing Chanel at the same time. Anyway.
anyway. My top 3:
Im actually going to start with my honorable mention: Jared Leto: I mean. Sure. Like is this man likely running a cult on an island somewhere? Like, yes. Is a literal furry costume a very funny choice to me? Also, yes. Imagine the expense of this. Imagine your cult leader having to leave to go dress as a furry version of a dead Nazi sympathizer’s cat so he can hang out with the Kardashians. Iconic.
Tumblr media
1. Jordan Roth looked great. I love the homage to Lagerfeld’s use of fans? While still being a really beautiful look.
Tumblr media
2. There were several tributes to Lagerfeld’s personal style and I thought Cardi B was actually my favorite?
Tumblr media
3. Alton Mason: this to me is a very good balance between something beautiful and on theme and also something that you wouldn’t wear anywhere else. I also think that…I love bridal looks and I think we should see more of them on the red carpet. Is this controversial or make any sense. I just think veils are great. I don’t know. And like. Here’s the thing. Do I have issues with the shoes. Yes. BUT I think overall this works.

ALEXA PENAVEGA AND NICHOLAS BISHOP STAR IN ‘A PARIS PROPOSAL, A NEW, ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERING FEBRUARY 11, ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
Part of the Network’s Annual “Loveuary”® Programing Event
Shot Partially on Location in the City of Light
STUDIO CITY, CA – January 23, 2023 – Alexa PenaVega (“Love in the Limelight,” XXX) and Nicholas Bishop (“Industry”) star in “A Paris Proposal,” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, February 11 (8 p.m. ET/PT) on Hallmark Channel as part of the network’s annual “Loveuary”® programming event. The movie shot partially on location in Paris and features iconic locations.
Anna (PenaVega) is an account manager for a New York City advertising agency who has the opportunity to land the biggest client of her career – Durand Diamonds. Much to her chagrin, her boss dispatches her and her colleague Sebastian (Bishop) to the City of Light to make the pitch and seal the deal. Anna’s by-the-books work style clashes with Sebastian’s looser approach and over-the-top ideas that dazzle the client but exceed budget realities that land them in hot water. Not only that, but Paris holds painful memories for her since that’s where she and her now ex-husband honeymooned at the start of their brief, one-year marriage. When they arrive in Paris to meet with the client, a misunderstanding leads the Durands to believe Anna and Sebastian are married, making them excited about the prospect of having real-life couple in charge of the creative vision for their brand. As they work on their campaign pitch and try to keep up appearances of being a happy couple – which becomes more complicated when Sebastian’s family becomes involved – they begin to learn about each other and the most romantic city in the world just might be working its magic. But when the truth about their relationship, or lack thereof, comes to light will this mean the end of their professional partnership as well as their budding romance?
“A Paris Proposal” is from Hallmark Media. Cameron Johann is executive producer. Producers are Jeffery Beach, Phillip Roth and Kristina Kambitova. Sufo Evtimov is line producer. Jessica Harmon directed from a script by Andrea Canning.

Dolo Flicks: Initial Reaction - Eli Roth's 'Thanksgiving' is a Homage to 80's Slashers and is Pure Fun

Published: November 23, 2023
"Sorry, Jessica! This year, there will be... no leftovers!"  -- John Carver
Director Eli Roth ventures back into the world of horror with a love letter to slashers with 'Thanksgiving.' It is a slasher film that harkens back to the subgenre's heyday when they were mass-produced almost on what felt like a weekly basis. The film follows in the footsteps of Robert Rodriguez's Machete and Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun as the third film that has been adapted from the trailers of the movie Grindhouse in 2007.
The Thanksgiving trailer was arguably the most popular featured in Grindhouse. Roth has been busy over the last decade producing, directing, and more actively acting. So it's surprising that it took so long for Thanksgiving to be made, considering it was only three years after Grindhouse that Machete was released.
"We wanted to get it right," Roth told the New York Times. "We couldn't crack the story. The fun thing about doing a fake trailer is that you get to do the best parts of the movie, and nothing has to make sense. For years, we were thinking, why would someone dress like a pilgrim and go on a killing spree? How do you go from one kill to another without it feeling like a 90-minute version of the trailer?
"Then it occurred to me," Roth continued. "What if we pretend that a Thanksgiving movie from 1980 was really made. And the day it was released, it was so shocking and offensive that every print was pulled from the theater and ordered destroyed. The only thing that survived was one copy of the trailer that's been lurking around the darkest corners of 4Chan. This is the 2023 reboot of what that movie might have been."
Eli Roth's 'Thanksgiving' succeeds as a homage to the slashers of the 1980’s
Thanksgiving follows a group of friends in Plymouth, Massachusetts, after a horrific event at the local superstore RightMart on the eve of Black Friday on Thanksgiving day. Numerous people were injured and killed attempting to get into the store. Now, one year later, those who were responsible are being hunted and killed one by one by a killer dressed as a pilgrim in a John Carver mask.
Following the template of 1978's Halloween, in 1980, Friday the 13th sparked a renaissance of horror films that could be based on seemingly almost any pseudo-holiday. Films like Silent Night, Deadly Night, New Year's Evil, and My Bloody Valentine were all centered around a holiday featuring a killer.
The slasher film has always been the most prominent and popular in the horror genre. The sub-genre has delivered some of horror's most iconic characters, such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Ghostface. Due to the often low expectations of slashers in opting to bring an overall fun experience that focuses more on kills than story, a filmmaker can practice their craft almost without restriction.
Roth has always been a director who pushes the envelope when it comes to bringing gore to audiences. He directed films such as Hostel and The Green Inferno, which were considered highly violent in their time. While not reaching the levels of pure splatter like last year's Terrifer 2, Thanksgiving's greatest strength is in its unique and fun kills that leave viewers closing grimacing and cheering right after.
Slashers tend to overly rely on the killer's characteristics to guide the manner of their kills. Thanksgiving doesn't fall into that trap, utilizing the unique locations to enhance some of the gore, including one victim being cooked alive. Often left out of discussions regarding what makes a great horror film is the atmosphere. The location of Thanksgiving pulls the audience further into believing it's the fall and holiday season.
One of the criticisms Roth has faced throughout his career is his writing. Thanksgiving was written by Roth along with Jeff Rendell. To the film's credit, they keep the script simple as a mixture between The Prowler and Friday the 13th as a tale of revenge. At times, the group of friends here are unlikeable but never reach the levels of unbearable that some of Roth's earlier work provided.
The cast is helmed by the lead final girl, Jessica (Nell Verlaque), whose father owns RightMart. The teenage group of friends feels generic but never overstays their welcome, going overboard and being obnoxious. The two veterans holding the film together are Patrick Dempsey as Sheriff Eric Newton and Rick Hoffman as Thomas Wright.
For fans of slashers, Thanksgiving is near perfection. It doesn't try to be anything more than a movie about a pilgrim-dressed killer out for revenge on a holiday. Those who grew up with an abundance of slashers in the 1980s will appreciate the work Roth and his team did with Thanksgiving. The film manages to implement its share of nostalgia for an often maligned era and does enough updating for modern audiences that can convert skeptics into new fans.

CLICK THE LINK ABOVE FOR THE FULL REVIEW
THANKSGIVING is worth the 16-year wait, as it plays by the old school slasher rules and has a good time doing so. With a solid cast and your typical whodunit slasher mystery, the movie ends up being a fun ride due to archetypes that have a bit more depth than expected, wild gore sequences and a strong use of locations and set pieces that build a lot more tension and atmosphere than I was expecting. It’s also nice to see an engaged Eli Roth direct one of his best movies in his filmography, playing homage to many familiar slasher movies while putting his own twist on each one. The film looks good, the pacing is solid and the humor actually works in the movie’s favor. Plus, this John Carver villain has a great look and could be a cult icon if the film becomes more successful to create a franchise out of. THANKSGIVING doesn’t reinvent the slasher wheel and the villain’s identity is pretty easy to figure out, which took away the mystery aspect for me. But overall, I had a lot of fun with a movie I’ve been waiting a long time for and it didn't disappoint for the most part. THANKSGIVING will probably be an annual movie tradition for me every end of November.

31 Days of Horror - Day 29 - Happy Death Day
29t/10/23
When I was younger, there were two movies in particular that spring to mind as haunting me with their adverts. Us and Happy Death Day. They were the kind of adverts that I would rush to skip out of fear - sure, as a child there were always adverts like that, but these two always stuck in my mind. Strangely enough, I watched Us only a year later, and I remember by the time I saw that one I was getting into a horror a bit more - I was still scared of it, but I did enjoy it. Distinctly, I remember braving the advert one night, watching it through and wanting desperately to watch it. Happy Death Day on the other hand, I never watched fully. Yet, the film was immensely popular when it was released, and I do remember watching the trailer for its sequel Happy Death Day 2U, which actually spoils the killer of the first film! After watching that, and hearing my brother and his girlfriend discuss it, I decided I did in fact want to watch them both.
Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day is a slasher of sorts, that follows Tree as she is forced to live her birthday over and over again, as a killer stalks her down and kills her. Going into this film, I was incredibly excited - as a result of it having such a strong premise, and also having already watched Freaky (which I think is one of the best modern slashers I’ve seen). However, Happy Death Day is less of a slasher than one would expect, and it leans more into comedy and the mystery element.
While I enjoyed this film, I definitely didn’t love it as much as Freaky, which I partly feel is partly down to not watching it when it came out. To me, the tone and comedy feels very much of the era, which I often enjoy in films, but sometimes this just didn’t work for me here.
I found this film’s strongest asset to be our protagonist Tree, whose time warp allows her to see how bad of a person she has grown to be. I found the time warp itself to be an excellent way for her character to change and see the error in her ways - first, when she suspects nothing is wrong - we are able to witness how she treats those around her just in the cycle of a day. Yet, she never grows to be unlikable, in fact, I still found myself routing for her throughout, which is down to her actor Jessica Rothe. Each time she dies, we get to see something new about her, be it looking into a different relationship she has, or something about who she is… I think the premise works excellently because of the character, and despite several moving parts in her life, nothing ever gets confusing or feels convoluted.
The killer's design is also instantly iconic and pretty fun! Although the baby faced mascot is kind of peculiar, it works nicely with the y/a tone and setting of a college campus, as does the hoodie they wear!
Maybe the most disappointing part of this film, for me, was the kills. A tones down and (mostly) bloodless slasher can work - and once again, whether or not the film is intended to be a slasher is somewhat unclear to me - Tourist Trap comes to mind for sure, but unlike a film such as Tourist Trap, or even M3gan, I found these kills to be mostly boring and uninspired. Tourist Trap especially works when comparing these films, because it is certainly a slasher, most of that films kills use its premise to great effect, with the killer using telekinesis, dolls and most famously plaster to kill people. In contrast, the only kill that comes to mind as using its premise to great effect is when the killer lights a fire with a candle. Here we see the birthday theme shining through, and it works really well for me. I think this came to be more disappointing to me after watching Freaky, which has great and incredibly fun kills. As I mentioned, I don’t mind a film not being super gory despite being centred around the murders, but so many of these did nothing for me, since they were neither gory nor stylized.
I also want to mention how great a lot of the camera work in this is! Both the twisting camera and shaky footage come to mind here. During a chase sequence, the camera twists around the room, which is utterly disorientating, and it makes everything all the more tense. As well as this, the shakier footage after Tree has died several times shows us the damage that is being done to her, and places us in this frame of mind.
While I enjoyed this film, I think the years of anticipation I had for it might have dampened my enjoyment! I think a lot of this film is fun, although some of the comedy doesn’t land for me, but it doesn’t do loads for me. That being said, I am very excited to watch the sequel at some point, which has also been spoiled for me a bit, and I hope it builds upon the best aspects of this film!
