"You’re different now, from the duck you once were,” Clockula tells Tutu, going on to press her for what she REALLY wants. I think he misinterprets her though (or maybe it’s just my own wishful thinking), taking her hesitation at saying all she wants is Mytho’s heart restored to mean she wants him now for herself. Hence the above push, which I’ll come back to in a sec.
What I got from her pause, though, was furthering the moment we had around the halfway point of the series, where she was questioning why she even liked Mytho AT ALL, and let me tell you, if I’m right, I’m throwing a goddamn party.
But Clockula pushes on, suggesting how Tutu can just not go any further with this. Take her half-baked prince and call it a day. It’s something that Tutu clearly never considered, and I wonder at Clockula suggesting it. It’s not for Tutu’s own good, of course, and I don’t think he realistically gives more of a shit about Mytho than I do. So it must come down to the story, even if that tendrils to being for himself.
Wouldn’t that keep things exactly as they are, though? Tutu pretending she doesn’t know where the last shards are, and Tutu not having figured it out yet, lead to the same basic result of No More Heart Shards. The difference is in Tutu’s ACTIONS then, not the end result, and now I’m left shrugging again. What do I do with that information? This story branch that would keep Tutu in the picture, but unmoving? Wasn’t the lack of story movement the problem in the first place?
What exactly is Clockula’s game plan?
(I’m completely unspoiled for Princess Tutu and watching it for the first time. That includes if I should’ve been able to figure it out from previous episodes, or if it’s cultural, or if there’s no answer at all. Spoiling the experience only ruins things for everyone!)

Storytime!
What do you have for us today, O Storyteller?
Tumblr media
Once upon a time, there was a man who died. The story the man wrote was about a happy prince who loved everyone and was loved by everyone. The people fought, each wanting him to love them and them alone, and an evil raven pecked at their loving hearts one after another. The more the prince loved them and tried to save them, the more the people’s love just fed the raven. In the end, the raven thought “I’d like to try eating the prince’s heart, the most delicious one of all.”
Is this a story about the prince, the people, or the raven? Because it’s feeling more to me about the raven at this point. The prince, once again, is defined in a wonderful yet abstract way, where we’re told he was so great that everyone lost their shit, but no hints as to WHY. The people seem pretty empty and basic too, having nothing better than this blank piece of printer paper to fawn over and obsess about. But the raven! The raven has a PLAN. The raven is a greedy motherfucker who gets bored and wants more.
How that relates to our story, that’s a tougher question. But it’s no longer just Ahiru who’s transcended her assigned role. At this point I’d say Mytho is the only outlier, continuing to be whatever he’s told. Now he’s a raven himself, though, will that begin to change?

CawCaw “creates” Rue, then, effectively locking the crow away as the original story said. I just get make it all mesh with what we’re seeing of CawCaw, there’s still important pieces missing. She rejects the idea of who/what she is (or has been told she is anyway) in favour of her own ideas of herself. But why then does CawCaw fall so in line when she reemerges? That she’s rewatching all this suggests she forgot, so did Daddy Dearest just send her an info sheet to fill in the blanks with whatever he wanted?
And if we’re seeing that CawCaw and Rue are filling the Odette and Odile roles, where does that leave Ahiru/Tutu? WAS SHE EVER A SWAN DID I IN FACT FORGET THAT AHIRU IS A DUCK

Ahiru’s panicked response to finding herself suddenly a duck is to simply DUCK AS HARD AS POSSIBLE, which is good and pure and correct.

Oh, he has a “laughing while suffering” CHAIR, my friend, and also quite possibly one of those double can beer hats.
Interesting how Fakir mentions Mytho and Ahiru, but not himself. Does he feel he’s NOT suffering, or that as a “supporting” character, he couldn’t possibly warrant attention, even negatively?

The immediate response to this is to rebuke it, but after a moment’s think, I get there. If we keep in mind what a marionette IS, then when there’s no one to control their strings, they just dangle there, lifeless. They lack the ability to move alone, so doing anything at all is impossible without a master directing them. Even lacking the ability to choose those motions, it’s freedom when you consider the alternative.
But of course, this only works when you adhere to those confines. If we take even one tiny step toward the metaphorical, what was once freedom becomes prison. So is that the larger idea that the show’s exploring here? Does it all come down to perspective?
