omer counter 5783
Posting 6 Apr 2023 / 15 Nisan 5783: tonight starts the omer! You can check out HebCal's handy checker for what day of the omer it is at this link.
Tumblr media
Image description: a digital collage with full colour botanical illustrations. A flowering branch of pomegranate has a sheaf of wheat in the middle. A spiral of moon phases in black starting from center top and ending with a gibbous moon at the straw for the sheaf of wheat.
For some people, this is something they were never taught about and you'll be surprised to hear about it. For others, it's a quotidian count without much more. For others (like me), it's a chance to do a little study each evening and take stock of your actions between Pesach and Shavuot. (Same goes for Shavuot - maybe it's a day you look forward to for study or for cheesecake, maybe it's something you never heard about. I like it because it brings together multiple of my loves: cream-based desserts, reading, flowers, and staying up all night.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image descriptions. Two photographs. Left is a single particularly tall stalk of blooming wild radish in a field of blooming white radish. The horizon shows some trees and the top third of the photo is a clear blue sky. Right is a bee about to collect nectar from a branch of flowering white ornamental pear. Her legs are visibly packed with golden pollen. The background is bokeh branches with few leaves on a sunny day.
The kabbalists introduced the practice of considering seven of the sefirot on the tree of life over the seven week period between Pesach and Shavuot as we metaphorically journey from the Narrow Place to Revelation. Each week has a sefira and each day has a sefira, so you end up considering each of them within each other: what does lovingkindness within discipline look like? What is sovereignty and humility within splendor? What is splendor within sovereignty?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description. Two images almost the same. Both depict a white kabbalistic tree of life collaged on a photo of the sea and mountains on the horizon at sunset with a subtle trans pride palette. The left has only Hebrew and the right has English transliteration under the Hebrew.
I have counted for a couple years now in chevruta and learn something new about myself, my friends, and our texts each year. If you've never tried counting before but are game to take a look, if you've tried before but this year you're going to complete it, or you've done this before and are looking to consider your practice from another angle, I have a tool for you!
I wrote an omer counter off my notes. We will never achieve full understanding, and each year will change and our understanding with us.
Tumblr media
Image description: the cover of the omer counter with previously described pomegranate spiral moon and wheat image at center. Top reads counting the omer in English and Hebrew with the year 5783. Bottom right has artist signature in Korean and English transliteration of Hebrew.
There's a big at-a-glance spread of the count:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description: a double spread, split into two images, in black and white of a calendar with Gregorian and Hebrew dates, day of the count, sefirot, moon phases, and Jewish holidays.
There are quick breakdowns that invite you to consider your own systems and give background for
why and how to count
the tree of life
sefirot etymology and translations
what Shavuot is
Each week has a double spread with plenty of space for your own notes, the sefira of the week, translations of the sefira, the blessing for counting the omer in Hebrew and English, and the day of the count in Hebrew and English. These are my own using my consistent queer and poetic grounding to get the cultural and not just literal meaning across, using multiple names and genders for the Divine.
Tumblr media
Image description: a double spread showing the week focusing on the sefira tiferet, in all black and white, as described in the above paragraph.
If this piques your interest, or you'd just like to support a mixed race queer Jew, please consider visiting my ko-fi, where you can get a PDF for as low as $5, or my redbubble, where you can purchase stickers, notebooks, and cards with the images.

ive said this before and im gonna say it again.
Witchcraft is activism.
The term "witch" has HUNDREDS of Years of discrimination and presecution attached to it. And that isnt just referrng to the Salem Witch Trials. Native Americans legally couldnt practice their Spiritualities until the year 1978. If it werent for our ancestors & the older folk fighting to keep these Traditions alive. We wouldn't be able to Freely Practice today. So tell me, Whats stopping you from Casting Health Spells on random people? Casting Protection on people Protesting and for People in dangerous areas? Whats stopping you from doing an Abundance Spell for Mutual Aid? Some of yall work with Deities of Health, Justice & Karma . Why not invoke them for help? My whole point is. If you aren't helping people your just serving your own ego and couldn't care less about the state of the World.

FAQ
Q: what is a jewitch/jewish witchcraft?
A: considering there is an expanse of ideas on both what being jewish and what practicing witchcraft/magic means, there is no one definition to describe jewitches or jewish witchcraft. for the sake of this server, we define “jewish witchcraft” as any practice that involves the magic, mystical, supernatural or spiritual within a jewish framework and a “jewitch” as anyone who considers themselves a practitioner of judaism and witchcraft/magic. Q: how can you be a jewitch or practice magic/witchcraft as a jew?
A: the answer to this question is complex and depends on who you ask. respectful conversation surrounding this topic is welcomed within the server. we recommend the following article by the creator jewitches as a primer for this question.
Q: who can join?
A: any jew, self-identified jewitch or not! our server is pluralistic and we welcome people from all movements, minhags, and backgrounds. we appreciate having diverse perspectives. we are explicitly a safe space for gers, disabled & neurodivergent jews, lgbtq+ jews, bipoc jews and jewish systems. bigotry, hatred and infighting will not be tolerated. messianic "jews" are not welcomed here.
Q: can i join if i'm curious about or new to jewish magic?
A: yes! infact, once you are verified, we have a resource forum channel where we are constantly working to update it with new and improved resources all the time! we also have a dozen channels and other things to explore different topics within both judaism and witchcraft.
Q: can i join if i'm a ger/convert/conversion student?
A: yes! converts are fully jewish and welcome to practice jewish practices. conversion students are welcomed to join, however we want to make it explicitly clear that gers-in-progress should not practice jewish magic/mystycism/witchcraft without supervision and approval from a rabbi. we are happy to educate and provide our perspective but we cannot preform the job of a rabbi.

@ the person who wanted to name her baby lilith, from a jew: please don’t. our religion is a closed practice. not only that, we made amulets against lilith for centuries— particularly to keep her away from children who she swore to weaken when she was caught after fleeing the garden of eden.
in the liturgy / in the rabbinic interpretation, she steals the seed of young men who have nocturnal emission, which she uses to fertilize herself and give birth to demons. none of this is done with consent. she is really not the amazing sexually liberated figure pagans think she is, and im so sick and tired of people co-opting our religion and mysticism but ignoring the challenges we face. just find another goddess or being to help you liberate yourself from patriarchal standards.
(In the future I'd greatly prefer you leave a comment on the post as I don't particularly enjoy being the middle man in discourse, however I'm making an exception because this tends to be information that not a lot of people in the occult community are actually aware of, and it's worth stating)

Surprises
Just had a talk with my Papa who is fairly open-minded for his age but not nearly as openminded as like Gen Z. I never would have expected this, but turns out he's actually really interested in learning about Jewish witchcraft! Our family is Jewish for context. I was definitely taken by surprise but I can't wait to find him some resources!

Am I "less Jewish" because I practice in a different way than you, or is your view of what Judaism can be just too narrow?

In a world where such evil exists, people seek to prevent and remedy it when presented with such an option. There are hundreds of methodologies, but most fit within the bounds of ma’asim (rituals), segulot (folk remedies), and kemiyiot (amulets).

The 5784 / 2024 omer counter is live and expanded to twice the former length with more prayers, poetic translations, art, and space to count the omer your way. Counter and colouring companion are available on kofi, and stickers and more available on redbubble.
Here's a peek at the inside of the omer counter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description: 7 screenshots of the omer counter, showing a colour cover, a black and white cover, a multi-month spread, an explanation of how to count with a list of pieces of the ritual, the omer bracha with 7 different names of Gd, a week spread with journaling prompts and diagrams, and a week's worth of dailies.
And some peeks at the colouring companion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description. 3 screenshots of black and white imagesfrom the counter, showing the pomegranate spiral with wheat sheaf cover; an empty eitz chayim diagram with crescent moon and succulent, bonfire, and mountain with a rose, and a multimonth Hebrew and Gregorian double spread with peonies, roses, moons, a bonfire, and flowered mountains on each day of the omer and Shavuot.
If you like the cover image, you can buy three different versions of it on stickers, stationary, clothing, and more. You can also get a full colour version of the sfira tree with roses, just the roses (60 of them!), or a minipack of stickers for your counter.
Like this but can't buy? Even a reblog helps support a queer, disabled, mixed race artist and parent!

One of the things I hear a lot from Gentile witches and neo-pagans who want to work with Lilith or claim to work with Lilith, is that she is actually a Mesopotamian goddess, usually either Ishtar/Inanna or Erishkigal, and that it was the Jews, with their horrible patriarchy juice, who slandered her and cast her down, and so the Jews do not deserve to say what happens to her and it isn't antisemitism to work with her, or to completely ignore what the Jews say about what she is in a Jewish context.
Lilith is not Ishtar or Erishkigal. However, there is a Mesopotamian figure that is pretty stinking analogous to Lilith, and is probably her folkloric ancestor, by which I mean the idea of Lilith probably comes from this Mesopotamian figure. In fact, Lilith almost certainly is either a Jewish version of this figure, or, they are both descended from the same Near Eastern and Mediterranean basin folkloric figure. That figure is Lamashtu.
Lamashtu is, much like Lilith, the supernatural embodiment of maternal and infant mortality, a figure of power and terror, who functions as a way to embody and cope with the profound dangers that are pregnancy, childbirth, and infancy without effective medical care. the Mesopotamians never worshiped Lamashtu, but they did seek to appease her, including making symbolic gifts to her, to keep her from visiting them, and killing them or their children.
An interesting side note is that there is also a Mesopotamian figure who specifically opposes Lamashtu and functions as the protector of pregnant women and infants, and that figure is Pazuzu, a wind spirit, who ruled over other wind spirits, including ones called the Iilu in the Akkadian language. Akkadian is a Semitic language, related to Hebrew, and this word is probably a cognate of Lilith, but the Iilu probably have no relationship to the figure of Lilith except her name. You might know Pazuzu as the demon featured in the movie, The Exorcist, and ironic fate for a mythological protector of women and children.
Anyway, if you'll remember, I implied above that the Lamashtu/Lilith figure, was present in various guises throughout the Mediterranean basin and the Near East, so there are of course figures analogous to both of them throughout the region, such as Lamia of Greece, and the Strix of Rome.
So if you really really want to work with a figure who functions as the supernatural embodiment of maternal and infant mortality, Lamashtu, Lamia, or the strix would all be excellent options that don't come from an extant closed religious practice. All the baby killing, none of the antisemitism and cultural appropriation.
While all three figures are almost certainly descended from the same folkloric root, they're all subtly different, because as stories and characters travel, they change. as such, they all have particular good points about them as figures of veneration.
Lanashtu is the OG bad bitch, who commanded fear, respect, and offerings, like a mythological mafiosa, collecting protection money.
Lamia has attached to her the story that she was one of Zeus's dubiously willing lovers, who was screwed over first by Zeus, the embodiment of patriarchical rule, then by a jealous Hera, the embodiment of patriarchal marriage, so if what attracted you to Lilith was the story from the Alphabet of Ben Sira, about a victim of the patriarchy getting her own back through violent vengeance, Lamia might be the girl for you. With her however, the emphasis is less on her murder of children, then on her seducing and eating men, though she does also get strongly associated with killing children, especially boys.
And the strix is particularly interesting, because the word comes down to us in the modern Italian word for witch, striga. Indeed, one of the theories as to where the witch figure came from in Early Medieval, and then Early Modern Christianity, was as the strix demon made human. This might explain the close association between Early Modern Witchcraft and infant mortality, including Italian stories of witches causing infants to die seemingly natural deaths, so that they could dig them up and eat them after their funerals, something that ties these human supposed witches very closely to demonic folkloric antecedents. If you are looking for a figure of unfairly maligned female power, the strix and her close association with later human witches, might be the one for you.
All three of these figures, much like Lilith herself, are reflections, both of the power women wielded even within patriarchal societies, over the process of pregnancy, birth, and childrearing, and also the powers of death and loss that everyone was subject to. There is something powerful, transgressive, and even healthy in acknowledging the fears and dangers presented by this death and loss, and for some people, that might take the form in venerating the underlying powers. If this is something that would be spiritually meaning for you, and you wish to work with such a figure, and you are not Jewish, please respect the fact that Lilith is part of a closed religious practice, and remember that Lilith has sisters, in other parts of the Mediterranean basin and the Near East, who are not from extant closed cultures, and who might serve your needs better anyway.
