Is that a thing people do??? What the absolute fuck lmao

It's August 21, which means: Happy Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day! If you are a writer of fanfic, please know just how appreciated you are!! Fandom would be such a different space without your creativity and labors of love. 💜
In celebration of this most glorious holiday, @renegadepublishing ran an event where we bind copies of fics to gift to their authors, and I had the joy of binding The Tranquility of Water for @noppoh! It's a truly fantastic post-canon story and I love the exploration into the effects of the main story on its characters after the fact. (This is a story I love so much that I wrote up a page and a half crash course on The Untamed so I can try to force my sibling into reading it as well. Take that as you will)
The walls of the Hanshi creep in on him and so Lan Xichen leaves. He leaves Cloud Recesses and his seclusion, stealing away in the night with no-one the wiser that he even left. His feet bring him to Lotus Pier where a surprisingly kind Jiang Cheng seems determined to help him heal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a title like "Tranquility of Water" and the story largely taking place at Lotus Pier, I may have been a little heavy handed with the lotus imagery throughout the book, but it felt very fitting! The lotus on the cover was a last minute addition, but one that turned out so lovely. Just, you know, to tie everything together lotus-wise. (Another one of my favorite design details in the typeset is that both title fonts from the chapter headers and title page get repeated within the text of the story as the main characters handwriting fonts!)
I started the physical binding process of my copy while at the Renegade Retreat in April (and decided the week before that I wanted to change my body font... can you say formatting speedrun?) and up until that point I hadn't actually figured out what the cover and endpages were going to look like. Special thanks to everyone who contributed pieces to this binding (and who moral-supported me along the way -- my copy holds so many fun memories now) because it LITERALLY would not look like this without you all. I really love the way the color transitions worked out, with a predominantly blue/green case, fading into green, into pink, into the title page, and then transitioning back out at the end of the book.
And these endbands!! Friends, that is SILK embroidery floss that a friend brought to the retreat especially so I could experience the decadence of silk endbands. I will never be the same. (They're so smooth... so shiny... so slippery to work with, but SO WORTH IT)
(Binding details under the cut)
The pieces that went into this bind:
Fandom: The Untamed/Mo Dao Zu Shi
Pairing: Jiang Cheng | Jiang Wanyin / Lan Huan | Lan Xichen
Bookcloth: Renegade Retreat Swap Table Special (I have no idea what it is, but it was just enough to make a copy for myself and the author and the color worked PERFECTLY!)
Cover paper: Opal Momi paper
Cover paper: Opal Momi paper
Endpapers: from the Craft Consortium Ink Drops - Dusk paper pack
Titling: foil quill
Endbands: leather cording core, silk embroidery floss for the bands
Body font: EB Garamond
Title fonts: Wintersoul and Bastian
Handwriting fonts: Bastian (Lan Xichen), Richardson Script (Lan Wangji), and Wintersoul (Jiang Cheng)
Tumblr insists on eating and doubling text in this section at its own whim, so if there's something missing that you're curious about, feel free to DM me an ask!

Renegade 2023 Typeset Exchange: Some Of You by tangerinechar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I signed up again this year to participate in @renegadepublishing's annual typeset exchange. (For those not immersed in the lingo, the typeset is the formatted file that's printed out.) It can be as simple as adding a title page, chapter breaks, and page numbers... or you can get more complicated. And what better than an exchange event to go all out, and commit yourself to a truly ridiculous amount of formatting?
I was happy to typeset this MDZS modern AU for axandri in the exchange! Some Of You by tangerinechar is a Wangxian actor AU where an inadvisable drunk tweet from Lan Wangji sets off a series of events, and is a lot of fun! It also has a ton of social media in it, and I set myself the vaguely ridiculous goal of formatting it all with profile pictures for everyone.
Tumblr media
I used a Twitter-blue inspired header and fonts for the title and chapter headings, and was stuck for a bit on what to put in for scene break dividers, and then it hit me... hashtags.
Tumblr media
There were Twitter accounts for most of the main cast, and a whole host of recurring OC's, with twenty different profiles total. I spent some time looking for headshots and other pictures of the cast where they still looked like their character (Jiang Cheng's actor is very smiley! That one was the trickiest!), went along with all the other fandom riffs in the names that I could recognize (and got some help with a few), and snuck in pictures of both my cats.
Tumblr media
(I thought I was almost done. I really did. And then just a few chapters from the end... there's eight pages of Tumblr posts and another eleven different unique profiles. Once I got over my initial despair... it did let me sneak in my other cat, and some icons a friend drew, as well.
Tumblr media
Social media AUs, let me tell you... fun to read, a whole other adventure in typesetting. But I am pretty happy with how it turned out overall!

Sometimes I think my "SV is self fulfilling prophecy" takes are going to get me flack from people on here but then I remember that no hate I get for hot takes can ever match how someone wrote a call out post against me for . Making the header for my Jiang Cheng poll a bunch of grapes

20 Questions for Writers
Tagged by @oakashandwillow
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 42...the perfect number
2. What's your total AO3 word count? just shy of 500k which is an insane number
3. What fandoms do you write for? >_> look. is the top fandom on my ao3 page supernatural: yes. am I still actively posting spn fic: technically also yes. but the incoherent scum villain tweets that don't make it onto ao3 are where my heart truly lies rn
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
#1 and #2 are the double header of Cumplane (Pairing), an in-universe meta for @cleromancy's threadfic, and Cumplane Forums AU, an archive of @flightlesscrowkids's communal threadfic that I shamelessly enabled. #5 on the list is also a scum villain chatfic, It's Fine Cause I'm Wearing Cat Ears, where shen yuan is still insane on the modern internet but this time binghe and liu qingge are there. thank you cucumber stans for your support and good taste.
#3 is my untamed big bang from these nettles, alms which I cowrote with @zorrosuchil (chengxian, but also wangxian and a lil tiny bit zhanchengxian, much to jiang cheng's disgruntlement).
#4 is my pacific rim reverse bang Our Blood in the Machinery in which raleigh becket is possessed, but joke's on you, he's into that shit.
5. Do you respond to comments? I try but unfortunately I often give myself the fake homework of needing to reply Meaningfully which means it simply does not happen
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? hmm probably the most it-didn't-have-to-be-this-way classic tragedy fic is The Dismemberment Song (the untamed, nieyao); the deadest dove is Jettison (pacific rim, hansens badtouch)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I was going to say Only Human but then I remembered the last chapter ends with one of the main characters announcing her imminent demise lmao so perhaps my cql fix-it of Waking / Rising
8. Do you get hate on fics? thankfully not, I don't think they get enough attention to have haters lmao
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? only for siblings
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? fandom fusions are my faaaaavorite to spitball. way back in the day I had grand plans for Merlispn which (as the name should make clear) was very silly
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? not to my knowledge but cambionverse did once get cited in an academic paper
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? funnily enough one of my smallest and least-viewed spn fics, Driftwood, was translated into chinese!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? nearly all of them in fact! shout out to @thegeminisage and our series Cambionverse which is old enough to be in middle school now
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? I am a multishipper til death do us part ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? fuckin. Envesseled lmfao. ON GOD WE WILL POST THE LAST FIVE CHAPTERS I JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN
16. What are your writing strengths? *eye* think my own jokes are very funny hahaha and I love to write banter & arguments
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I can brainstorm plots all day long but executing upon them is So Hard
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? as a monolingual it is something I would do very sparingly if at all, and only if there wasn't another way to convey the same tone/emotion
19. First fandom you wrote for? the first thing I ever posted to ao3 was The Quest for Camelot which is found poetry from the merlin fic finders comm. before livejournal I did post a few things to ff.net but they are going with me to the grave
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? listen. I understand why it deals psychic damage for my followers to see supernatural content in the year of our lord 20 whatever. but read Cambion those are my kids

Title: Til Death Do Us Part
Pairing/Characters: poly Jin Ling/Jiang Cheng/Jin Guangyao
Rating Explicit | E
Warnings/Tags: Non-con/Rape, incest, suicidal ideation
Other general tags include: time travel fix it, canon divergence, everyone (you care about) lives, wedding fic, wedding sex, secret (incest) wedding, threesome, smut, angst, angst with a happy ending
Notes on the rape tag: I'm tagging it this for two reasons. One is that two of the characters have experienced violent rape in the past, and while it *probably* won't come up in any explicit detail in this fic but it very much does in the series as a whole and may be referenced. The second reason is that while it doesn't happen on-screen in this installment of the series, one of the main conflicts of this series has been Jin Ling's deception of Jiang Cheng while they are in a relationship, causing them to breakup at the end of the last (already published) fic when Jiang Cheng discovers that he'd intentionally withheld information about himself to keep Jiang Cheng from finding out that their relationship is incestuous because he does not want him to reject him for this reason as the Jiang Cheng in Jin Ling's timeline had (temporarily). Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng getting back together in this installment involves Jiang Cheng forgiving him for rape by deception and while it's not explicitly spelled out as that I think it deserves a warning. Jin Ling's actions aren't *intentionally* malicious, they're driven by fear, loneliness and selfishness, but he sure does know he's doing a bad thing and rationalizes it away until Jiang Cheng is very, very obviously and badly hurt by it.
Summary: This fic is the 5th installment of a series (first 4 are already published here: https://archiveofourown.org/series/2835754) in which a 40yo, very powerful Jin Ling time travels to the past to prevent some terrible things. Something goes wrong, he arrives years later than he meant to and gets stranded, and decides to build a life for himself and fix what he still can.
He keeps his identity a secret, joins the Jiang sect, and enters into an incestuous relationship with Jiang Cheng, his uncle, who in this world is younger than him and has absolutely no idea they're related, as Jin Ling himself has not yet been born.
He does his best to keep his loved ones from befalling the same fates as before, to varying levels of success, and spends years living this new life.
In the last installment Jin Ling convinces Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao to marry to keep the latter safe. Jiang Cheng discovers who Jin Ling actually is and breaks off their relationship, kicking him out, telling him he needs space to decide if he even wants to speak to him again. Jin Ling leaves, and Jiang Cheng decides to go through with the marriage to Jin Guangyao anyway.
This last installment is focused on the romantic relationship developing between Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao as they plan their wedding, and Jiang Cheng's lingering/Jin Guangyao's budding feelings for Jin Ling, who is trying to find a way back to his original timeline, since he is no longer wanted in this one.

Tagging Appropriately
If your work is NSFW: Tag top/bottom/versatile and/or dom/sub/switch dynamics.
Tag all bdsm/kink prompts.
Clarification: Just the prompts used. Any additional bdsm/kinks can be tagged at author's discretion.
Dead Dove is allowed. Must be Tagged Accurately!
Clarification: It is accurate to say; "Choose Not to Warn." It is accurate to say; "Additional Tags to be Added." It is accurate to say; "Proceed with Caution."
Use of the "Dead Dove" tag should accompany the tags it's warning for, however.
Ultimately, you're just trying to let your audience know what they are investing their time in.
Tag Happy Ending, Ambiguous Ending, No Happy Ending with regards to Jiang Cheng/Wei Wuxian
Seeing as tragedies and canon ships are still allowed, please Tag Endgame Relationships. We recognize that the endgame might not always be Jiang Cheng/Wei Wuxian, so we ask you to warn the audience ahead of time. Again, Jiang Cheng/Wei Wuxian must be the focus of the creation.
Make your chosen prompts clear in header, blurb, tags, or titles.
Clarification: Tag your Mixed Prompts (tropes, AUs, bdsm/kink), the Day Prompts can be relegated to the Author's Notes or headings.
We appreciate all the creators who are participating in this event. The tagging guidelines and rules are mostly an accumulation of the survey taken before the event was created.
Due to this, the collection is Moderated. Please be aware.

Picked up Rebirth for You again. I know this show has bad reviews for being nonsensical so I’m not expecting much. And like, parts are okay, and parts are like, ugh that was just moronic.
Cutting for spoilers. Some good points at the end but I need to vent first:
Baoning was kind of okay at first but her petulance is getting old; I know Ju Jingyi isn’t famous for her acting skill but I saw Legend of White Snake, I know she can lift her chin and not pout, at least. And she wants to be free of the emperor but whenever she’s inconvenienced, she runs back to him to throw his weight around. No wonder he hasn’t backed off yet, he clearly thinks she values him. And she already knows she’s into Li Qian but she isn’t willing to speak up for herself or him at all? He’s got a small army and a father who can send more troops if he needs them, he’s clearly not a complete nobody. If she stopped lying to her grandma about it, grandma might be willing to look into him and support Baoning in getting him out of the Dowager Empress’s control.
Not a huge fan of how she’s leading Zhao Xiao on at the moment, either. I know he turns into the villain later so something is going to sour, but for now? He’s got a crush on a girl and she’s willing to marry him, so he’s stoked. He’s willing to fight for Baoning’s hand, even if it’s against the Emperor. He’s doing nothing wrong and doesn’t realize something’s wrong on her end. Because she didn’t tell him. She’s not into him, her grandma gave her an out, and she didn’t take it. Right now, she’s setting up her own unhappiness and taking him down with her, and I can’t feel sorry for her.
Also, not sure why the show is setting up the duel against an injured Zhao Xiao and the Yongqing prince (love rival #4, by the way, and we’re only on ep 9). Wouldn’t it have been better for Li Qian (who is not injured) to sub in for Zhao Xiao (who was recently STABBED)? The drama of one partner fighting for the other is superb, just look at Hao Du and Leyan in The Long Ballad. Instead they’re deflecting to Zhao Xiao, which takes a prime opportunity for Li Qian and gives it to someone else.
(Granted, it would make far more sense for Known Suitor Zhao Xiao to fight the duel, if he were at full strength. But he’s not, and they had an out and didn’t take it. This is like, the show of wasted opportunities. I thought I wasn’t watching Gundam Seed Destiny again but maybe I should check the headers.)
Plus sides? Li Qian hasn’t gotten to do that much but Joseph Zeng is performing him adequately and I do like him. His side-plot was set up as the main plot in the first ep, and while it is taking a backseat a bit, it’s still the driving force so far and is far more interesting than Baoning’s Reverse Harem Goes Wrong. Wang Zhuocheng is doing well too! He sometimes chews the scenery a bit in other shows (I loved him as Jiang Cheng but he was Acting instead of acting sometimes), but he’s been good so far and his puppy eyes at Baoning are Grade A. And Ju Jingyi’s stupidly dangly headpieces may be elaborate-in-the-wrong-way in this setting but they’re nice inspiration for First Age Tolkien elves, who are renowned for their sparklies~

This Is How (You Haunt Me) - and other ghost stories by Pyrria
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This anthology is a collection of four haunted MingCheng fics - Forgive Me (Save Me), Come Back To Me, This Is How (You Haunt Me), and Good Bones - all written by Pyrria (@pyrriawrites over on twitter), and I kind of just committed to a forest vibe for all the designs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were lots of letters in the various fics, and I enjoyed picking out handwriting fonts for everyone, but I definitely had the most fun making chapter headers for Haunt Me, designing signs based on aspects of each chapter.
(more design details can be found under the cut, if that's your thing)
