mdzs headcanon of the day #24 !!
yanli, wen qing, and mian mian are besties, the it girl trio if you will. they have a group chat together where they plan little outings together and schedule their next pilates class. and whenever yanli talks about jin zixuan and it’s in a slightly negative way (90% of the time it’s not even negative, it’ll be like him forgetting to buy something from the store that they probably didn’t even need) wen qing will tell her to divorce him. mian mian is on board with this decision

bummed at the lack of kp s2* and thus feeling especially grateful that cql was such a long story that aired completely and didn’t leave you needing a second season.
grateful and indeed slightly alarmed at how willing i seem to be to consume all fifty episodes episodes again like some kind of a crack** fiend. literally in the middle of a kp rewatch rn, so again not as concerned as i could be.
*in 2023. who knows? there could be more still. also! they could’ve fucked it up real bad. let us rest knowing that it’ll be better done in fanfic than it could ever be on live tv.
**the crack is wangxian. & jiang sibs. & the juniors. & the yi city gang. did i mention wangxian?

How to watch episode 19&20 wearing shipping goggles
So, I rambled about the beloved Zhancheng Sunshot Campaign episodes here, but still have many thoughts within me, which culminates in this extended cut.
I'm calling episode 19 and 20 of The Untamed the Zhancheng Sunshot episodes, because they basically are just one mini-movie of them wandering around, investigating Wei Wuxian's disappearance and sunshooting while being cute.
Starting with their power couple entrance.
Tumblr media
We're picking up with them after the entire "insert Golden Core in shidi" drama after a 3 months timeskip. This is just a whole banquet served for a starved shipper like myself. Just think of all the sweet and salty filler you can use those 3 months for. Jiang Cheng was all by himself after the Core debacle, having nothing but spiritual power and a fancy hat. Without a sword, he basically had to hitchhike or walk to the Cloud Recesses to find help. Lan Wangji had just led an group of disciples to take his home back from the Wens. His uncle was still injured, most of the Cloud Recesses had been burnt, his sword was also unavailable. He does carry a sword in episode 18, but it doesn't seem to be Bichen and he is without one when we pick up with him here.
Tumblr media
This is also the first time we hear Lan Wangji speak again since episode 14. So, it's necessary to have him say something iconic like "Kneel" to make Jiang Cheng melt on the inside. He does make an incredible entrance, even without a sword. As does Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng flies in all by himself. He has no sword, no disciples, and no one knows where he got the fancy robes from. He has Lan Wangji though, who basically works like a sword to carry. Good choice, Jiang Cheng!
Wearing your shipping goggles, you can happily fawn over them taking the lead in this moment together. Lan Wangji walks ahead, he has Wangji somewhere in his pouch, some neat strings available for chord assassination. Jiang Cheng isn't using it in this scene, but he does have Zidian. Even without borrowed swords, it wasn't a bad idea of them to infiltrate the Indoctrination Bureau. There's an entire fic waiting there how they did that. I can already feel the tension in their sudden need to trust each other in several life threatening stealth situations. Tehe~
Tumblr media
After retrieving their swords, Zhancheng find themselves staring dramatically at the horizon to discuss their feelings. Jiang Cheng discusses his feelings because he does that all the time. It's all very normal. They match sky for cinematographic purposes, not because my shipping goggles come tinted.
Tumblr media
We also learn that Jiang Cheng thought he'd find them all (aka Lan Wangji, Jin Zixuan, and probably Nie Huaisang who fainted and was carried back to dage, and even possibly Wei Wuxian) regrouping in Lanling. So, during the three month timeskip, he did in fact either go there first to get his new robes and help, or directly to the Cloud Recesses, where we last saw Lan Wangji's grand return after missing him dearly for several episodes.
I'm in favour of Jiang Cheng hitchhiking to the Cloud Recesses for simple reasons of it being closer, him having no means to travel without Sandu, and mostly because he reunited with Jiang Yanli only later in Qinghe when she was with Jin Zixuan in Lanling after departing with Song Lan. Obviously also because I wear shipping goggles and want Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji to go purple robe shopping. Which they could also do in Lanling. Many options, much food.
Tumblr media
After sharing his worries with Lan Wangji, they are reunited with their swords. Sandu and Bichen are very sad to be separated. Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji look cute together.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng lets Lan Wangji pull at Wei Wuxian's sword to find it has sealed itself. The utter display of trust and lack of questioning is something people wearing shipping goggles latch on. There is also delicious tragedy in this, because if Jiang Cheng had pulled Suibian now, the Core debacle might have doomed all of them less or more, we'll never find out. What we can find out, after adjusting our shipping goggles, is that this moment can come back to haunt Zhancheng almost twenty years into their future. As if they needed more angst potential.
Tumblr media
Zhancheng regroup with their supporting cast on the Unclean Realm's battlefield. Jiang Cheng can finally reunite with his sister, hugging her while Lan Wangji watches like he wants to be hugged like that. Jin Zixuan also regrets not getting any hugs. With the Jiang siblings hugging it out, Lan Wangji can also marvel at Wen Xu's head, taken off by Nie Mingjue. Ah, the delicious fuel to have Lan Wangji of all people look vengeful at someone. Wen Xu broke his leg, burnt his home, murdered his fellow disciples. Lan Wangji could really use a hug right now. Looking at you, Jiang Cheng, not at Jin Zixuan scooting in there.
The best thing about their strategy discussion with Nie Mingjue aside from all the looks Lan Wangji throws at Jiang Cheng is them asking for the same assignment without previous discussion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lan Wangji looks delightfully worried about Jiang Cheng's angy moment, but does not have a snickers available. A hug might do. And Jiang Cheng searches for Lan Wangji to look at in his worried moments. Just hug.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some wordless communication and in sync movement fogs up the shipping goggles. Nie Mingjue also approves of young heroes sticking close together for fighting and comfort. Jin Zixuan almost gets smacked out of the way by Lan Wangji trying to hurry after Jiang Cheng.
Next time we see Jiang Cheng, getting some soup from his sister, it is dark. This can mean many things like they finally had time to take a bath and stop smelling of blood, but they can also have a few lovely fic filler hours together. Tehe~
Tumblr media
Next time we see them, Jiang Cheng has also retrieved/recruited some disciples of his own and is allowed to command the Lan disciples, except for Lan Wangji, who has a special spot at his side. The disciples seem very used to Jiang Zongzhu giving commands, they are off like he threw them a treat. Dog trainer Jiang Cheng strikes, I guess. Lan Wangji approves of good displays of leadership.
Tumblr media
Sticking close to Jiang Cheng means Lan Wangji can witness the beautiful display of leadership and Zidian usage from the front row. His glance from the side is gasp and giggle worthy for a lost shipper soul like mine. He approves of an efficient, dramatic usage of spiritual weapons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their investigation of the reversed talismans not only comes with memorable lines, but another display of standing closer than necessary and trusted words. Their hands almost touched. Jiang Cheng has never heard of reversed talismans, he doesn't know about this, and he isn't afraid to ask for Lan Wangji's opinion and help, which is just melting me like butter in the sun.
Tumblr media
Honourable mention to them putting Lan Wangji on a Scully box for this scene to appear giant because his heels didn't seem to have been enough next to Jiang Cheng. Lan Wangji's magically changing height doesn't seem to bother Jiang Cheng. He will be fine with three centimetres smaller Lan Wangji, three centimetres taller Lan Wangji, and Lan Wangji wearing heeled boots to appear taller. He will have to carry him when his little feet hurt, though. Do not go Sunshooting in heels.
Tumblr media
Alas, the necessary heartbreak for such legendary love stories! Lan Wangji watched Jiang Cheng return from his confession scene to Wen Qing. Don't be sad, Lan Wangji, he came back to you! The disciples in the back cannot believe the audacity of Jiang Zongzhu giving a comb to somebody else. Bless them being on our side!
The episode then follows our heroes on their travels around Yiling where mysterious murderings hinder the sightseeing but give us more shared looks and words and standing next to each other.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng has also taught his disciples to bow properly to Lan Wangji and him at the same time, which is very gasp-worthy.
Tumblr media
The climax of the Zhancheng episode is approaching, and Jiang Cheng can't wait. Lan Wangji can't quite wait either, touching Jiang Cheng. Lan Wangji often touches people. It is normal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zhancheng stake out Wen Zhuliu and Wen Chao from a rooftop spot. They are sitting delightfully close to peek into a tiny hole. Most likely, they just jumped up there without making much of a sound. But how did they find the delightfully useful hole? It's nice sometimes to think about them giving each other a leg-up and then wandering around the shingles in search of the hole. Maybe their shoulders touched.
Tumblr media
In times of shock and disgust, find yourself a travelling companion to share the burden.
Tumblr media
A compilation of Lan Wangji watching Jiang Cheng hug everyone but him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly, our beloved Sunshooting with Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji episode comes to an end with a devastating break up. Sandu touched Lan Wangji's chest much like Lan Wangji's arm touched Jiang Cheng's chest before. The rift between them grows. Lan Wangji leaves. Jiang Cheng stands up for his family. There was never a happy ending here. But food was served to fight the sadness.

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 33 part one
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Songs From The Wood Make You Feel Much Better
We jump right back into the battle, and the show replays the bit where Wei Wuxian chokes the guy out and the guy spits blood into his own nose. Because a stunt performance like that should be seen twice to be truly appreciated.
Tumblr media
It also replays Jiang Cheng holding Jiang Yanli’s body, while he (probably) thinks about how basically everyone he ever valued was killed by someone who was mad at Wei Wuxian. Now he is also mad at Wei Wuxian, which he will express by killing someone he values (Wei Wuxian).
Tumblr media
Clan Leaders Ouyang and Yao start talking shit about Wei Wuxian and hollering for everyone else to kill him. The crowd encircles him, shouting blame at him while they all point at him, in a sequence that’s effective despite being the world’s most obvious greenscreen compositing.
Tumblr media
Note that while everyone is telling him to die and blaming him, none of them is brave enough to actually attack him.
Lan Wangji isn’t with him at this point; he’s off in the background fighting assorted people. This is a reasonable choice for him, but he will regret it.
Tumblr media
(more after the cut!)
Wei Wuxian starts fluting and sends black resentment blasts against the general group. Lan Wangji tells him to stop, but he does not stop. So...these deaths can't be blamed on the second flute, yea? CQL Yiling Laozu isn’t as murderous as MDZS Yiling Laozu, but he’s not NOT murderous, either.
Tumblr media
Eventually he gets tired of holding fake blood in his mouth and stops playing so he can spit it out.
Tumblr media
Because Lan Wangji is afraid for Wei Wuxian, he loses focus and gets a nasty cut on his arm, resulting in his arm being too weak to save Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
I'm sure that won't keep Lan Wangji up at night ever.
Drop It Like It’s Hot
As soon as Wei Wuxian appears weak enough, Yao and Ouyang both reveal their hypocrisy, yelling "take the Yin tiger seal!" You know, that thing they’re not supposed to want or use.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian flies up on top of a tall thing and tells everyone that if they want it, they can have it, and then he blasts the tiger seal into pieces, sort of.
Tumblr media
Everyone goes nutso trying to grab the remaining intact half while it scooches around staying out of anyone’s grasp.  Yao and Ouyang both kill living cultivators in their attempt to get the amulet, even though it’s only useable for unorthodox, supposedly evil cultivation. Jerks.
Wei Wuxian does some heartbroken cry-laughing and then decides to kill himself, which, given the conventions of this genre, is both predicable and reasonable of him.
Tumblr media
But Lan Wangji doesn't believe in genre conventions; he wants Wei Wuxian to live, no matter what, and has an ill-timed epiphany about this just as Wei Wuxian is backing up to the edge of the cliff. The same cliff they argued on in Episode 23, incidentally.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji asks, so tenderly, for him to come back. Wei Wuxian continues to back away, possibly thinking that they are still fighting, or possibly just focused on his goal of killing himself. Then he yeets himself off of the cliff.
Help Me, I Think I'm Falling
When I get that crazy feelin', I know I'm in trouble again
We get this beautiful flying-on-wires stunt where Lan Wangji launches himself forward to catch Wei Wuxian, with a bonus overhead view, and both views are shot from much too fucking far away.
Tumblr media
But unlike the camera insanity of the previous episode, the visual composition is beautiful and so the scene doesn't lose its impact. And the shot of Wei Wuxian falling toward the camera is iconic and wonderful, in the saddest possible way.
Tumblr media
When Lan Wangji catches his wrist, Wei Wuxian is so surprised.
Tumblr media
He just looks at his wrist for a moment, and then looks up to see who caught him, and is touched to see that Lan Wangji is trying to save him.
Tumblr media
We get a nice hero shot of Lan Wangji from Wei Wuxian's point of view, with a fan in his hair and everything, as this moment stretches out; Lan Wangji can’t pull him up, but won’t drop him.
Tumblr media
All the same, Wei Wuxian doesn't want to be saved, and he tells Lan Wangji to let him go.
Tumblr media
But Lan Wangji is not about letting go of any person that he loves. He puts on his best stubborn face and hangs on for all he’s worth.
Tumblr media
The impasse is broken by the arrival of Jiang Cheng, but he is not here to help Lan Wangji. He is here to help Wei Wuxian, in the sense that he is going to help him die.
Tumblr media
Some might argue that Jiang Cheng didn’t really kill Wei Wuxian, but I think he should get full credit, whether he wants it or not. Knocking someone off a rock so they fall and die is maybe less personal than stabbing them in the face, which was the other option from this angle, but it's not like prying the rock face apart was going to NOT kill Wei Wuxian.
Also, killing a guy who is in the middle of a suicide attempt still counts, Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian is initially happy to see Jiang Cheng, even after he realizes that he’s is here to kill him. Wei Wuxian smiles and closes his eyes, expecting (presumably) to get stabbed in the face.
When Jiang Cheng opts to attack the rock instead, it puts Lan Wangji’s life in danger, because he’s not going to let go of Wei Wuxian for anything at this point. This truly terrifies Wei Wuxian, and he desperately yanks his hand away, keeping Lan Wangji from falling with him.
Tumblr media
Then he peacefully falls to his death.
Tumblr media
The last thing he sees and hears in this life is Lan Wangji's shout of anguish.
Tumblr media
Damn, show.
16 Years 13 Years Later
Then we skip forward to the evening after the reunion on the mountain. Wei Wuxian is waking up in Lan Wangji's bed, for the first but definitely not the last time, and his mask is off. He has some flashbacks to the events of episodes 1 and 2, just to remind us of where we are in the plot.
Tumblr media
Then he turns and sees Lan Wangji, who has taken a great deal of care to be as beautiful as humanly possible.
Tumblr media
He's sent a junior disciple out to get some nice white flowers, he's taken his hair down, he's used all of his most expensive skin care products, and he's got his lovely elegant hands out in front of him, playing the guqin.
Wei Wuxian says it feels like the last 16 13 years have been a dream, and Lan Wangji tells him he's awake.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji is practically beaming with happiness and contentment here, although they still have some stuff to work out.
Lan Wangji gives him the 411 about what happened after his death, and Wei Wuxian asks the awkward question: why was it 3 years before Lan Wangji looked for his body? Lan Wangji doesn’t explain about being stuck in the penalty box, opting to ask Wei Wuxian where he went while he was dead.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian doesn’t know. This doesn’t, incidentally, mean he was holding out on Lan Wangji all those times Lan Wangji tried to reach him. Inquiry, as I understand it, is for talking to ghosts who are hanging around, and isn’t meant to reach restful dead in the afterlife. Otherwise Lan Wangji would be using it to talk to his mother.
Do You Believe Me?
Then Wei Wuxian peels the cover off of the big unresolved problem in their relationship, asking Lan Wangji: did you really believe me, back then?
Tumblr media
Let’s revisit the earlier iterations of this conversation.
In Episode 22, Wei Wuxian promised Lan Wangji that he would not fall into demonic cultivation, and then immediately asked him "do you believe me?"
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji responded with the most reluctant of nods. And this face.
Tumblr media
Lan Wangji lied, y'all. He absolutely did not trust Wei Wuxian on this topic, but he loved him, so he lied.
By Episode 23 Wei Wuxian knew that Lan Wangji didn't believe him, and confronted him about it.
Tumblr media
And Lan Wangji made the exact same face about it.
Tumblr media
It’s ok, Lan Wangji, we don’t believe him either.
Language note: the English subtitles use “trust,” “believe,” and “believe in” at different times throughout the show, but they’re all translations of the same Chinese word, 信. Often, in the Untamed, the same word or phrase will be used in parallel situations, but the English subtitles hide the parallel by using different words each time. This is annoying but is probably inevitable translation is done by a team - different episodes will have different translators, and English has a LOT of synonyms to choose from.
In the present, when Wei Wuxian asks him if he really believed him back then, Lan Wangji doesn't have an answer for him, because the answer would be no.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian hears what Lan Wangji isn't saying out loud, and he ends the conversation, mildly crushed.

Okay so more characters for my Percy jackson AU polls, I want to finish out some of our iconic trios! My next characters are going to be the rest of the Yumeng trio (Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng) and the Xianle Trio ( Feng Xin and Mu Qing)! So of course, ladies first, and who better than my favorite girl (no it’s totally not an eldest daughter connection lol)! For her it’s honestly a hard one, because like i feel like of some of the biggest gods/goddesses that she would relate to the most would be Hestia, but like I said in an earlier post, Hestia doesn’t have any demigod kids in the Percy jackson books so keeping with that she isn’t an option I’m going to list! And like ngl, I totally feel like Jiang Cheng is a kid of ares, and like I guess they could have the same parent, but she definitely isn’t a kid of ares! And like I also could totally see them having different parents, and like Jiang Cheng being Madam Yu’s bio kid and Jiang Yanli being Jiang Fengman’s kid, but I still don’t know who would be her parent! If anyone knows another option not on my list please comment!

Fandom love asks: 2, 6, 16! 😊
2. a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like!
That Jiang Yanli has a chronical health condition which prevents her from improving her cultivation. At first, I didn’t think much of it and was like, “Eh, can’t she just be not that good even though her parents seem to be great cultivators?” but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. It also was kinda emphasised by CQL giving her a sword (likely because it looked good in the scene, but still, it’s there!) – so she was a cultivator but we never see her actually cultivate? It makes the whole family thing even a bit more tragic – the daughter that had potential to become as great as her mother, possibly, but her poor health prevents her (and whose fault is that? Do her parents blame themselves for perhaps being too caught up in their own problems and missing the first signs? Or is it just another proof that her parents are incompatible? Lots of fodder for blaming each other. Oh the drama!) .
6. something you see in art a lot and love
In CQL/MDZS, I really like the bunnies and ribbons everywhere in Wangxian art, or the Lotus flowers in art with the Jiangs – just, all these themes going through the art all the time. For styles, I especially love water colours and I’m happy that I’ve seen a bit more of that!
16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate
I wouldn’t really call it tiny (I’m very bad at noticing tiny things tbh XD) but I really love how Lan Jingyi seems to be super trusted by Lan Qiren? Holding his sword and everything? Not getting reprimanded even once, even though Jingyi is… like that. I feel like it illustrates quite well that LQR has perhaps mellowed out a bit over the years. He still doesn’t like WWX and disapproves, but OTOH there’s a mini-WWX right there in the clan and he’s kinda his right-hand man or something?! XD Love that.
I also just really loved the very judgy look the Twin Jades give Su She when he arrives at Koi Tower. XD LWJ is like, "How DARE -!" and LXC is doing double takes and going WTF in his head (there will have to be words with A-Yao over this!). There’s a reason I made an icon out of it. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thankfully, this whole moment has been giffed! :D

cql for the ask game!! :3
hi Jana :3 thank you!
My rating (1-10): 8/10 objectively but 11/10 for filling my heart withloveand other emotions
My favourite character: I can never answer this 😭 my heart says lan wangji but how am I supposed to see this not answer wei wuxian, the greatest character of all time, huh? RUNNERS UP: jiang yanli, wen zhuliu, jin ling, wen ning, a-qing <3
My least favourite character: man I like everyone a lot for the roles they play. like, of course jgs is a shit, wrh is a shit, but they're meant to be awful and sleazy and corrupt and cruel. I truly don't think there's any character whose presence irritates or angers me. su she, I guess, but I more pity him than anything
The character I think I’d be friends with: WEN NING!!! JIANG YANLI!!! wei wuxian who can be friends with anyone and whose attention and kindness and consideration often feels reaches through the screen to my as a viewer. I like to think I'd get along with lwj but he likes maybe three people so probably not
The character I think I won’t hit off with: jiang cheng because I'd judge him and I'm not good at hiding how I feel and he'd hate that probably. also nhs because I can't lie and I wouldn't be able to keep up with whatever he's up to and also I'd be a stickler for the rules
My favourite episode/scene: uuooohhhhh how to choose. god damn. I'm going to say the 43 snow scene tied with the gc reveal scene tied with jyl defending wwx tied with "I still am' tied with yiling laozu reveal tied with the very last scene tied with the wuji reunion in ep2 OKAY I'll stop
Whose clothing style I like best: jiang yanli!! I have a fondness for the light and airy clothing she wears - it looks so ethereal and beautiful. shoutout to wwx though our wuxia goth icon
Times I watched it (and if I would again): goodness, maybe four or five times? I'm not itching for a rewatch soon but I will rewatch again at some point in all likelihood
thank you!!!

character: the guy in your icon
favorite thing about them
i mean, how do i pick? he's just the Most character
it's a tie between his ruthless single-minded focus to ruining every aspect of jin guangyao's life, and the way he leans on the social perception of himself as the useless child he once was to accomplish his goals <3
least favorite thing about them
i legitimately can't think of anything that isn't an "i love this about him but recognise that it's objectively terrible in-universe". i do think i'd never want to know him IRL, not even young and silly NHS
favorite line
i love the CQL-only line of... what is it, something like "the things that aren't my business, i won't meddle with"? i really feel like it sums up his laser-focus on what he cares about, and frankly apathy towards basically everything else
brOTP
i'm coming up blank, but probably because i don't tend to draw lines between platonic and romantic ships i enjoy. i just love throwing characters together and seeing what happens
OTP
i like my nie huaisang ships Messy and Fraught, so it's got to be either nie huaisang/jin guangyao or nie huaisang/mo xuanyu
(i'd also like to shout out to my rarepair of jiang yanli/nie huaisang. ie: neediest man alive/woman who stakes her self-worth on being able to take care of people. and also my other rarepair of qin su/nie huaisang)
nOTP
i'm not the nOTP sort, but i confess that even though one of my favourite nie huaisang fics (and fics for the untamed in general) is sangcheng, it's one of those ships i'm not interested in in its own right - every author needs to sell it to me fresh
random headcanon
CQL-verse, obviously, but i generally think of him as having had a crush on meng yao Back In The Day - usually not more than an idle fancy, but just enough to add yet another layer of Fraught to it all
unpopular opinion
i don't see him as the type to matchmake WWX and LWJ.
both because i can't see him as interested in doing that in general, and in an AU where there was never a situation that led to him honing his natural cleverness, i can't see him having the social confidence to be the "wise" matchmaker type
song i associate with them
metaphor, by the crane wives. probably not a coincidence that i also associate it with one of my most beloved OCs tbh
favorite picture of them
Tumblr media
i nearly posted one of the exquisitely hollowed-out expressions on his face post-JGY's death, but honestly, how can i turn down a nie huaisang who is just so incredibly baby

Apologies in advance for the theorising, but I have a question about Wei Wuxian/Ying. Before he defects from the Jiang sect, why do they allow him to wear red and black robes if he's been inducted into the main family and the other male disciples wear purple? (I noticed that Jiang Yanli doesn't wear purple very often. Doesn't she have a golden core? (And therefore cannot be part of the work the sect does, so they do not give her the robes?))
I understand, from a writer's point of view, this is done to single him out as the anti-hero protagonist, but wasn't he the head disciple one point? Surely, they would make him represent the sect by wearing purple? Or was it simply because when they picked WWX up from the streets, they tried to give them to Him and he refused? Or did Yu-furen (Madam Yu) refuse to give him the robes because WWX was just a street rat, and he didn't deserve them?
Design questions depend on specific adaptations. I'll assume you mean CQL, but let me know if I got it wrong.
I usually prefer to try and answer questions from Watsonian points of view, but I have yet to think of something that would make sense in-universe?
What I think happened with CQL is that most of the show takes place when WWX is on good(-ish) terms with Yunmeng Jiang, but the showrunners also wanted to have the iconic white!LWJ/black!WWX look, so it was easier to just... Have WWX wear black and red most of the time. But that's just a guess.
If I were coming up with designs, I'd do one of the following
Only the sect leader's family wears the colors of the sect. This would allow WWX to dress in other colors, but then so would background characters, so it's a moot point in terms of making the protagonist stand out
WWX wears the colors of Yunmeng Jiang, and changes to red and black when he breaks with the sect. I would even take it a step further and dress him as a head disciple, more like a background character than like a sect leader's son
As for JYL, the drama seems to imply she doesn't really cultivate due to vague health issues. But she does wear the colors of the sect! She just does it in pastel shades. That pink/lilac stands for purple probably isn't lost on you, but she also likes aquamarine, which stands for the teal we see JC and Yu furen wear. I'm not sure if the teal is supposed to bring to mind water or lotus leaves, but it's definitely meant to be part of the Yunmeng Jiang palette in CQL.
On that note, I know there's a Great post somewhere about the best designs for each part of the story (@layzeal it was by you, wasn't it?) but I can't seem to find it 😭
