Jiara parallel time

Jiara reunion in Barbados. JJ sees Kie, Kie sees JJ. He takes off his hat. He smiles, she smiles. They're both just so relieved shes alive. Kie run into his arms.

vs

JJ almost gets himself killed on the bike. Kie looks like she might cry. Neither of them smile despite the relief that he's alive. Kie walks towards him and warns him never to do that again. JJ puts on his hat.

There is SO MUCH packed in that parallel.

The HAT for one. I feel like JJ uses the hat a lot as a bit of a emotion support object, if you will. He needs that something to hold onto, to hide under. He finds identity, weirdly enough, in the hat.

In Barbados, JJ takes off the hat and yes its because logically he feels safe to not hide his identity anymore. But I feel like it's a symbol of his vulnerability with Kie. He doesn't feel the need to hide away with her. When the hat is off, it's like a symbol of him being open with her. His guard is down. He's okay with being fully seen when she's there. He makes her feel safe.

We see in the reunion at Kitty Hawk, he's wearing the bandana over his mouth, but the moment he's starts talking about Kie, he pulls down the bandana.

We see in both scenes where JJ is being vulnerable with Kie and talking about their relationship (the fight/i love you dude and the almost sorry) he's not wearing the hat. Yes he doesn't always wear the hat but my point is, no hat = vulnerable.

In the fight at JJs house, JJ doesn't wear his hat until he closes off and runs away.

When talking about their fight, JJ is closed off the whole time, and wearing a hat the whole time. When he shows glimpses vulnerability (saying shes right, staring her eyes), he's seen fidgeting with his hat. My point to all of this is his hat seems to often be a symbol for JJs emotional state and vulnerability. Often costume designers and producers will put symbolism in the characters clothing to express the characters inner feelings without having to verbally say it aloud. Kiara is also seen wearing a lot of much cuter, put together outfits, which could be a symbol for her feelings for JJ.

So when Kie is scolding JJ, it's like he's expecting this hug and "thank god you're alright" and instead he gets in trouble, and he puts on the hat. And it's a way of saying he's ashamed, he's guilty in a way. he's hiding. He doesn't want to be seen because she's right, he screwed up.

Not to mention the parallels between both these scenes with the reaction of Kie seeing him. This scene could have been a "You're alive!" kind of scene like their reunion in Barbados but it wasn't because JJ put himself in that situation, and she's furious because he more than anyone should know what it feels like to think you've lost someone you love. He didn't almost die because he got kidnapped or something, he almost died because he was reckless and she wanted to make clear how much he should never put her through that again. JJ understood, because he knew better than anyone what it felt like.

On the docks he's sees the woman he loves alive, glowing under the sun, and he takes off his hat and hugs her and tells her it's all gonna be okay.

Under the bridge she sees the man she loves alive, dark under the night sky, and he puts on his hat and nods, saying nothing because he knows what he did wasn't okay.

I can't guys I just literally cannot handle this.

Mike studies JJ’s face with an expression that’s impossible to read. He nods once. “For now, at least.”

Something tightens around JJ’s throat as he feels his fists clenching at his side, not fully trusting himself to speak yet. Mike is still watching him with those dark, steady eyes. “Did you think we’d take her without saying goodbye?”

The response leaves his mouth before he even has a chance to think. “Yes.”

Mike laughs once, loud and empty. “Same way y’all did, I guess.”

or: When the Maybank kid shows up in the middle of the night, begging for Kiara to stay in the Kildare, all Mike can think about is how much he reminds him of himself.

Not gonna lie, the jiara reunion hug gave me major Bellarke 2x05 hug vibes.

Oh, absolutely same. Regrettably I thought that from the second I saw it in the teaser.

It’s the way she runs to him of course but also the way they just hug each other so tight. It sounds silly but not many ships can pull off that epic type of hug scene and I’ve not seen many ships really do it to this level except for Jiara and Bellarke.

Might be my two favorite ship hugs ever!
