Chapter 3: See
Han's apartment was not what Riko expected. He expected it there to be clothes flung around and dirty dishes in the sink, almost like a teenage boy lived there and not a man old enough to drink. However, Riko was pleasdntky surprised by the clean, cozy apartment. It was only a two bedroom apartment with a living room and a kichen, not a giant apartment. It felt very comfortable, not cramped.
Han led Riko to his bedroom, where there was a rack lined up on the far wall filled with clothes and accessories sorted by color.
The bed was pushed to the opposite corner against the wall by the door, a desk and chair taking up the space between the bed and the clothing rack.
Han walked up to the actual closet door and pulled out a neatly folded towel, a plain white t-shirt, black boxers, and black basketball shorts. Handing them to Riko, he said, "If you'd like to shower, the bathroom is at the end of the hall. Any toiletries you'll need are in there. Feel free to make yourself at home. Also, if you'd like to wash your uniform, leave it on the bed, and I'll start the wash."
Riko smiled at Han before making his way to the bathroom.
Like the rest of the small apartment, the bathroom was neat and clean and smelled of citrus and mint.
Letting the warm water ease his aching body, Riko took a quick shower before drying off and dressing in the clothes Han gave him.
Riko made his way back to Han's room after placing the damp towel in the laundry basket. Han was holding up various items of clothing, seemingly comparing them and either putting it back or adding to another smaller clothing rack.
"You done?" Han asked without turning to face Riko.
"Yep!" Riko chirped happily, and Han turned to face him.
"What style do you want to go with tonight? Punky? Neon? Sexy?" Han suggested as he looked through the clothes.
"Uh, I'm not sure. I usually wear my work outfit to these things." Riko admitted shyly.
"You're fucking kidding me?" Han asked with wide eyes and Riko just shook his head.
"Wow. Well, I'm feeling leather, so this is going to be fun."
Time flew by as the pair giggled at some ridiculous outfits but eventually decided on two outfits.
Riko wore a silky, white, long sleeved shirt with flared sleeves and a low v neck. It reminded him of what cosplayers wore when acting as a Renaissance poet. The shirt was tucked into black leather pants. Han insisted Riko wear the strappy leather harness that clipped to a black leather choker around Riko's neck. Riko also had the matching leather garter around his legs and thin waist.
Riko's hair was styled out of his face in a sexy but mesy way. Black eyeliner was tastefully smudged around Riko's doe eyes.
Han was matching Riko in every way, except his shirt was black. In his left ear piercing was a black dangling cross and in the right was a black stud. His long, slender fingers adorned with silver rings.
Han looked stunning, sexy even. He was not the tallest, barely an inch taller than Riko, but he was toned, and his slim waist made his body naturally amazing.
"Damn, i did a great job, you look hot." Han shamlessly complimented as he came into the bedroom after changing in the bathroom.
Riko stuttered out his appreciation and complimented Han. The pair giggled like children as they made sure they had everything they needed and took many pictures.
"Crystal's is about a ten minute walk from here, or we could take my car and be there in less than two. Up to you, it's almost time to go." Han reminded Riko.
"We can walk. It's a nice night out tonight." Riko said, and Han agreed.
"Did you tell your family that you'll be staying at my place tonight? I don't want you walking home by yourself, God only knows what the fuck is out there."
"I did. They say hi, by the way."
Han smiled at Riko, "and before I forget to tell you, your work uniform is ironed and hung up in the closet."
"Thank you!" Riko chirped.
"No problem, let's get going before Jiaung blows our phones up."
The walk to Crystal's was filled with laughter, the pair was lost within the world they created between each other.
If one was to think of the most generic club, Crystal's would be the place that comes to mind. Loud bass shaking the building, women on poles, flashing lights, the whole ordeal.
Just as Riko and Han stepped through the door, Jiaung met them with a wicked grin.
"You guys look good!"
"Thank you. What's the party for anyways?" Han shouted over the music.
"It's my friend's birthday!" Jiaung swayed, clearly drunk.
"Who?" Han questioned.
"His name is Jackson! He's probably at the bar. Maybe?" Jiaung giggled before skipping off.
Han took Riko's hand and made his way through the crowd to the busy bar.
At the bar there was a tall guy who clearly worked out more than he did sleep. He wore black jeans and a tank top that said 'birthday boy' in crude writing. He was tan with dark hair and eyes, a very sculpted face was laughing at a joke the girl on his left made.
Han confidently waltzed up to the guy with a bright, "Hey man, you Jackson?"
"That would be me, who're you?" Jackson said.
Han pulled Riko to his side before answering.
"I'm Han and this is Riko," Han held out his hand in greeting.
With a blinding smile, Jackson firmly grasped and shook Han's hand.
"Happy birthday," Riko said with a smile.
"Thanks, you guys are Jiaung's friends, right? Let me buy you guys a drink, what do you want?" Jackson said as he turned to the bartender, the woman on his left pouting at the loss of attention.
"I don't drink, but a water would be nice," Riko admitted shyly.
"A whiskey sour for me," Han chimed in.
Jackson ordered the drinks and paid before motioning for the two to follow him.
Jackson led the small group to a hallway of many doors, opening the third one on the left, he led the group into a private room.
In the center was a black round table and a pack of cards. On various seats there was someone's personal belongings.
Jackson took a seat at the satin couch on the far end of the room and motioned for Han and Riko to sit, to which they did.
"Sorry, I could barely hear you guys out there and that chick was annoying me." Jackson explained.
"I understand, I'm not the biggest fan of clubs. It's hard to actually talk." Han spoke first, "How old are you turning?"
"Twenty-four. How do you know Jiaung?"
"Went to school together, how about you?"
Riko was happily sipping his water, listening to other two talk.
"She's been my neighbor since I was two. A big pain in my ass though."
Riko couldn't help but laugh, "Sorry! i shouldn't have laughed but I am glad that I'm not the only one who thinks so."
Han and Jackson burst out laughing at Riko's statement.
"Yeah, I just can't seem to shake her. What about you guys?" Jackson asked.
"Don't want to be alone and making friends alone is hard," Han shrugged, "I don't agree with most of her views but she hosts shit like this where it is easier to forget how much of a bitch she is." Han took a drink. "Also forces me to get out and about to meet new people."
"I see, so you're not a giant homophobe that thinks the world revolves around her and her alone."
"Nope, opposite actually." Han laughed.
"What about you, Riko?" Jackson prompted.
"Same with Han, Jiaung and her friends keep me from being a hermit. Also someone has to apologize for her actions," Riko explained.
"Cheers to that!" Jackson raised his glass and Riko mimicked the toast.
"I'm a bisexual, by the way, so I hope you don't mind it." Jackson warned.
"Bitch, I'm gay as fuck. Are you blind? Can you not see the leather?" Han joked.
"I didn't want to assume!" Jackson defended as the door opened.
"Speak of the devil, she shall appear." Han mumbled into his drink and Riko suppressed a giggle.
"Guys!" Jiaung squealed, launching herself over Jackson. "Why're you in 'ere? It's more fun out 'ere!" Jiaung slurred.
"Wanted a break from the bass." Jackson answered for the trio.
"Riko you look so handsome! I love the new look! I'd totally fuck you tonight, but first, a kiss!" Jiaung said and leaned closer to Riko, lips puckered.
"How about no," Han came in between Jiaung and Riko, "You're drunk and Riko is your friend."
"Fine," Jiaung huffed, "You guys got'a go out there! Or I'll drag you." Jiaung threatened before leaving.
"Fuck. Time to look at boobs and pretend I find them hot," Han joked before downing the rest of his drink.
"Let's exchange numbers before we go." Jackson suggested and Han took out his phone and handed it to the older male.
Jackson input his contact information and handed Han back the phone.
"I'll text you Riko's number," Han turned to Riko, "If that's okay?"
Riko gave a huge grin and nodded his head, Han nodded and sent Jackson a text.
"Got it. Text me any time, let's hang out without alcohol and Jiaung." Jackson said before leaving the room.
Han turned to Riko, "Kiss before we go?" Han asked playfully.
Riko rolled his eyes with a smile before shaking his head, to which Han faked being hurt.
"Let's get going before Jiaung or someone else comes back," Riko said before leading Han out the door and into the crowded dance floor.
Time flew by, and so did drinks.
Riko stuck to water while Han started to take shots, accepting anyone who offered to buy him a drink. However, Han was never far from Riko, sticking to his side like glue. Han playfully flirted with Riko, who pretended to be annoyed. When people would ask if Han was gay, Han would lie straight through his teeth and deny it. He was just comfortable, drunk, and trying to have fun. People bought the lie, Jiaung even believed Han's drunk words. it was probably because she was black out drunk.
"Riks! I have to pee!" Han sung out, "I'll be back~ Don't go too far~" Han said as he slipped away into the crowd.
Riko chuckled to himself at Han's antics as he took a drink of water at the bar.
"Riks?" A flirty voice sung out.
"Han, that was quick- wait, you're not Han." Riko said as he turned to face a woman who was wearing a tight, black dress that left nothing much to the imagination.
"Definitely not," She chuckled, "My name is Rebeca."
Riko introduced himself.
"That's a cute name. You're cute. Can I buy you a drink?" She purred in Riko's ear.
"I'm good, I have my water." Riko gestured with his half empty glass.
"Awe, c'mon that's no fun. You are dressed so nicely, I just want to ruin you, except I'd keep the leather on." She winked and Riko had to force himself to not cringe.
"I'd rather you not," Riko leaned away from her, silently wishing to be saved.
Rebeca pouted and started to lean forward when a arm cut in between Riko and her.
Riko's eyes traveled up the arm to see Han standing there, face serious.
"He's been trying to nicely reject you. It seems you need a more direct approach, fuck off." Han cursed.
"Fine, but you'll regret it~" Rebeca sung as she walked away.
Han immediately checked Riko over, hands coming up to rest of Riko's cheeks.
"She didn't touch you, did she?" Han's eyes shone with concern.
"No, I'm fine. Don't worry!" Riko chirped, hands coming up to rest on Han's.
"Good," as if a switch was pulled Han deflated, "I don't know how long I could've done the act for, my visions a little tilt-y." Han said as he leaned on Riko.
"Let's go back to your place, yeah?" Riko suggested as he stood up and took Han's arm around his shoulder to steady the drunk man.
Han just silently agreed and the pair made their way to the exit, passing Jackson in the process. Jackson just waved the two goodbye as he danced.
The walk to the apartment was a struggle. Han tripping over himself and giggling. At one point, Riko and Han had fallen to the concrete laughing.
After successfully getting into the apartment, Riko set Han on the bed. Han's hair a stark contrast to the black sheets.
"We have to get ready for bed, you can't sleep in that." Riko scolded.
"Fine," Han huffed and spread himself out so Riko could start undoing the harness.
Struggling slightly, Han took off the leather harness and garter. Looking in to the closet, Han found two pairs of basketball shorts, boxers, towels, and white shirts.
"Can you shower on your own?" Riko asked.
"Yeah," Han slurred and took one pair of the clothes and a towel. He clumsily made his way down the hall and into the bathroom.
Left alone, Riko grabbed some makeup wipes and took off the makeup Han had carefully applied before beginning to take off the leather.
Riko made his way to the kitchen and searched for pain killers and water bottles. When he found them, he took them back to the bedroom and placed them on the bedside table.
Han had left his phone, wallet, and jewelry haphazardly on the same bedside table. Riko cleaned up the items and put Han's phone on the charging cable, noting a text from a 'Lil Sunshine Bro' being the only notification at two in the morning.
Riko found a place to charge his phone and wait for Han to finish in the shower.
When Han arrived back to the bedroom, he looked hot. It was frustrating how effortlessly Han made it seem to be hot.
"Showers yours," Han mumbled as he laid down on the bed.
Riko made his way to the bathroom and took a quick shower, silently complaining about the lack of skincare products. Taking a mental note to teach Han about taking care of his skin, Riko changed into the comfy clothes and made his way to Han's bedroom.
"Hey, got any extra blankets? I'll take the couch." Riko asked.
Han turned to face Riko, looking obviously offended, and opened his arms. He was inviting Riko to his bed.
"Cuddles. I will not be taking no for an answer," Han said with a tone of finality,
Riko awkwardly made his way to the bed and laid down, unsure. As if Han could sense his lack of confidence, Han pulled Riko to lay on his chest and cuddle.
Han quickly fell asleep, and not long after, so did Riko.
it was around mid-day when Riko woke to his phone incessantly buzzing.
Han groaned before turning around in the bed and burying his head in a pillow.
Chuckling at Han's behavior, Riko grabbed his phone and checked who was calling him.
Tyler.
Picking up the call, Riko greeted the other man.
"Hey, are you available to come in to work? Sara called out and it's Sunday, I can't work this alone."
Riko groaned but agreed, hanging up. Grabbing the painkillers and water, Riko gently pulled Han from the pillow and made Han take the medicine.
"Who was it?" Han asked with a groan.
"Tyler. He asked me to come in to work because it's Sunday and the busiest day for the cafe." Riko explained as he got out of bed.
"I see. I'll make something for you to take, go shower." Han shooed Riko away and got out of bed himself.
Riko took a shower and got ready for work. He walked into the kitchen to find Han, dressed in a simple hoodie and sweatpants, finishing two chicken sandwiches.
"I made these for you to take. it's not much, since we don't have time to make anything more." Han said as he packed the sandwiches in a paper bag and neatly folded it.
"You're being a housewife right now," Riko joked.
"Oh, I must cook and clean for my husband as he works at the coffee shop." Han dramatically pitched his voice up.
"C'mon you know I was joking." Riko laughed.
"I know, but maybe one day it won't be a joke." Han suggested, to which Riko laughed him off.
Han went and put his shoes on, gesturing for Riko to do the same.
"Why're you putting your shoes on?" Riko questioned.
"I'm walking you to work, duh," Han said as if it was obvious, "I must make sure my husband is safe on the five minute walk into the wild."
"Okay, okay." Riko surrendered and put on his shoes.
The pair walked to the cafe in peace, just enjoying the summer midday sun.
When they arrived to the cafe, Han bid Riko goodbye and Riko walked in to the crazy store,
There was a lot of people talking and Tyler was frantically trying to keep up.
Riko quickly clocked in and freshened up, jumping behind the counter and working in tandem with Tyler to get through the rush.
After what felt like forever, the crowd thinned and the store was quiet. There was only a few people left, each keeping to themselves and sipping on their drinks.
"Thank you for showing up, i don't know what i would've done without you." Tyler spoke.
"I would have loved to stay in bed and sleep, but I couldn't leave you to die. I'm not that cruel." Riko joked as he cleaned the counter and righted all the ingredients that got knocked over in the rush.
Tyler laughed as the door opened and a figure walked up to the counter.
"Hey Reyes! What brings you back here?" Riko greeted the taller man.
"Thank you for the chocolate muffin." Reyes' monotone voice was quiet.
"Oh, you're welcome! I didn't know what you'd like, so I went with a popular choice around here." Riko explained.
"I like chocolate," Reyes confirmed.
"That's good, what drink do you like?" Riko asked.
"I typically like a mocha latte, why?" Reyes' asked with a head tilt.
Riko just hummed and made a mocha latte, sliding towards Reyes with a smile.
"I like to treat people." Riko said simply.
"Thank you." Reyes said and he made his way out of the cafe.
"I don't trust that guy." Tyler finally spoke up.
"I've known him since middle school. He's mostly harmless, just shy." Riko shrugged.
The next few months flew by. Every Monday and Wednesday, Reyes would come to the cafe and order a mocha latte. He would sit at the two person table by the window and work on his black laptop for a few hours. Sometimes, Riko would sit with them and they would talk. Or more like Riko would talk and Reyes would chime in every so often, invested in whatever Riko is rambling about. Reyes would always pay, if Riko didn't let him then he would silently slip a five in Riko's pocket without him noticing.
Every Thursday, Han would drag Riko to one place or another to hang out. Stores, restaurants, parks, arcades, museums, or they would hang out at one of their houses. Han would show Riko the music he was working on and talk Riko through the producing process, or they would watch a movie and make diner together. Han liked to cook and make music a lot. Han made a career from producing songs for artists and labels, often held up in his bedroom on the computer working.
Saturdays were when Riko could rest at home and catch up on social media. Sundays and Fridays were never a guaranteed schedule, sometimes Riko would work or hang out with friends. Often sitting and buying drinks for his friends.
This routine went on until the leaves turned all shades and fell off the trees in the early fall mornings.
it was a Friday when Han had dragged Riko to the back of a bar, to an underground concert. The kind of concert where new and old artists come to show off their talent for a small fee. Many of them hide their faces so they can vent out their frustrations in their music without being recognized.
Han had invited Riko to see the new artists, but it just to happened that Jiaung and Jennifer were there and made the boys sit with them.
The night went on and many different kinds of musicians had come and gone. Riko had zoned out about two people in, watching how the crowd would react to the genre of song that was being preformed and barely listening to Han ramble about the rhythms and melodies.
It wasn't until a man clad in all black, face hidden by a mask, came up on the stage with a acoustic guitar. Riko came back to Earth when the smooth bass tone of the man's voice captured everyone in the room.
When he finished, he gave a bow and the bar erupted in cheers. The man had given his name as Seyer, pronounced as sayer, before he disappeared into the back of the bar.
"Wow, he was amazing." Riko spoke and Han eagerly agreed.
"If I ever get a chance, I'd love to talk music with him." Han spoke before tuning into the next person.
The next hour flew by, Riko excused himself to the bathroom. He finished his business quickly and washed up.
In the corridor back to the main bar area stood a tall figure, typing casually on his phone.
Riko recognized the figure.
"Hey Reyes! What are you doing here?" Riko asked.
Reyes jumped slightly before turning to face Riko, pocketing his phone.
"Would you believe me if I said I was here for the music?"
"Absolutely, that's what I'm here for. My friend dragged me out. Are you here to preform or just watch?" Riko happily explained.
"I like to compose music in my spare time and decided to see how the people liked it. I'm happy they did, I was just on my way out though." Reyes spoke and Riko was surprised by the length of the sentence.
"I'm glad. Is music what you're usually working on when you're at the cafe?"
"Yep, or trying to but instead I'm listening to you."
"Oh, sorry if I bothered you," Riko apologized while looking away.
"Did I say you bothered me? If anything I enjoy your company, I miss it when I am working in my room."
Riko looked up at Reyes, surprised. "Then maybe I can come over and hear more of what you create sometimes," Riko hopefully suggested.
"Sure, lemme see your phone. I'll put my number in."
Riko hurriedly took his phone out, almost dropping it in the process, and handed it to Reyes. Reyes added himself as a contact and texted himself so Reyes would have Riko's number.
"I'll text you soon! I got to get back to Han! I'll see you!" Riko cheered as he made his way back to Han.
It took at least forty-eight hours to get enough courage to text Reyes and make plans for the next Saturday, the only day that week that their schedules lined up long enough to hang out.
The week simultaneously flew and crawled by. Riko still saw Reyes on Mondays and Wednesday, spent the night at Han's apartment as they talked. When Saturday finally arrived, Riko was a nervous wreck. He had no idea what to wear.
The feelings Riko had for Reyes in high school never went away, which made the situation so much worse.
It took almost four hours to decide on a cute, oversized sunset colored sweater with embroidered clouds and skinny jeans as his outfit.
Riko pocketed his phone and wallet before walking the twenty minutes to the car shop. He could have driven, but he was too nervous to get behind the wheel.
Reina had not made the situation any easier with her lack of enthusiasm, and help, with choosing and outfit. Instead she teased him for acting like he was a fifteen year old girl going on her first date instead of a twenty-one year old man. At some point Riko had to kick her from his room or else he'd cancel the hang out.
The twenty minutes felt more like twenty seconds and Riko found himself on the lot of the car shop, looking for Reyes.
Just as Riko was about to text that he has arrived, Mon came barreling over.
Nearly knocking Riko to the ground, Mon playfully barked and begged for attention, which Riko gave happily.
"Hello." Reyes greeted, wearing a white t-shirt and black jeans.
Riko greeted Reyes in return and allowed Reyes to lead him through the shop's office and into a backroom that mostly held what looked to be a kitchen and a small dining table. In the backroom, a latter was pulled from an attic space to the ground.
The space was not huge but it also was not small either. A navy blue, full-sized bed was pushed up against the far corner, under a skylight. Three guitars were hung on the wall, an acoustic, an electric, and a bass guitar. Miscellaneous speakers and sound equipment were neatly placed on a desk with a computer and multiple notebooks under a mounted TV, directly across from the bed. A set of drawers lined the opposite wall of the guitars, along with a mini-fridge. It smelt of a nice cologne, not overbearing but nice. it was plain and simple, but nice and air-conditioned.
"Make yourself at home, drinks and some snacks are in the fridge." Reyes said as he took his shoes off by the ladder, Riko following suit.
"Reyes, this is so nice!" Riko said, in awe of the place.
"Lucian."
"What?" Riko asked, confused as he watched Reyes look at him.
"My name," He paused, "Is Lucian."
"What?!"

He is adorable but yeah I feel like he would make lots of height jokes and they definitely get old after like the second time

Now CRISPR Being Used To Modify Deafness Gene
Recently, Dr. He Jiaung revealed that he has produced gene-edited babies, claiming it would prevent babies from inheriting their father’s HIV. The Chinese scientist has opened the doors for other scientists who were keen on doing similar experiments.
One of them is Denis Rebrikov, a Russian biologist who told Nature in June that he also intends to gene edit human embryos and bring them to term.
He told New Scientist magazine that five Russian couples who are deaf, have approached him to experiment with the CRISPR gene-editing technique so they can have a biological child who can hear. He plans to apply to the Russian authorities for permission in “a couple of weeks”.
In this case, the use of CRISPR, seems stronger than for trying to make children HIV resistant, as done previously, but the risks still dwarf the benefits, say, other scientists.
“Rebrikov is determined to do some germline gene editing, and I think we should take him very seriously,” says CRISPR expert Dr. Gaetan Burgio at the Australian National University. “But it is too early, it’s too risky.”
Each parent eager for his study is deaf due to mutations in their GJB2 gene. This means both the expected parents in each couple have a recessive form of deafness. Thus, all their children could normally inherit the same condition. While the majority of genetic diseases can be prevented by screening IVF embryos ahead implantation, with no need for gene-editing. However, this is not an option for these couples.
Many reports have advised that if it can be done safely then editing the genes of small babies might be justified in this kind of situation.
Is it a dangerous process?
Rebrikov, at one of Russia’s largest fertility clinic, the Kulakov National Medical Research Center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology ( Moscow), has sought out these unusual couples.
“It is understandable and clear to ordinary people,” he says. “Each new baby for this pair would be deaf without gene mutation editing.”
Previously, He Jiankui’s work was severely criticized due to many reasons. One of the major criticism was that there was no need to conduct such uncertain experiments to prevent these men from infecting their children with HIV. More on, Jiankui worked on gene editing without the approval of the Chinese government. It was a secret affair.
On the other hand, Nature reported that Rebrikov is openly discussing his plan to use CRISPR to create HIV-resistant babies – this time for couples where the mother is HIV-positive.
Still, many experts believe that there there is no need for risky gene editing in this case.
Rebrikov also plans to discuss and seek permission from the Russian government in a few weeks before heading with the controversial CRISPR use in deafness gene editing.
How will this work?
In west Siberia, many people have a missing DNA letter in the position 35 of the GJB2 gene. Having one copy does not affect, but those who inherit this mutation from both parents never develop the ability to hear.
Thus Rebrikov wants to stop children from inheriting a form of deafness as a result of mutations in the GJB2 gene.
The five couples who are eager to go through the process, do not want their children to be deaf too due to this mutation. Rebrikov will use the CRISPR to modify this mutation in IVF embryos from these couples.
Homology direct repair will be applied to prevent deafness. In this method, one copy out of two copies of the GJB2 gene will be corrected in the IVF embryos.
“Technically, it is achievable,” said Burgio.
In November of last year, scientists in the field released a statement saying that this kind of germline genome editing could be unobjectionable if the risks were fully addressed and if certain criteria are met. Those criteria include a very “compelling medical need” and “an absence of reasonable alternatives”.
Preserving deaf culture
But it is not a win-win situation for Rebrikov. Many people think that deafness is not a disability- at least not life threatening- but culture and want their children to inherit the deafness condition to sustain unique deaf cultures (ed note: seriously!). However, the five couples don’t have any choice if they want to have their biological children who can hear.
There are doubts about CRISPR that have not been addressed. No method was found to ensure that gene edited children won’t have unwanted mutations, or guarantee that every cell in the children’s body will have the modified DNA.
“We continue to believe that proceeding with any clinical use of germline editing is irresponsible at this time,” the November statement says.
“The 1st human trials should start with infants or embryos with nothing to lose, with fatal conditions,” says bioethicist Julian Savulescu of the University of Oxford. “One should not be starting with an embryo which stands to lead a pretty normal life.”
How about working on more serious genetic disorders? Well, people with serious recessive disorders rarely find themselves in the same condition as the 5 couples. For instance, people with cystic fibrosis usually die very young and are actively discouraged from meeting other people to avoid swapping the bacteria that infect their lungs.
According to Savulescu, the first gene editing trial should engage couples whose children could inherit fatal conditions such as Tay-Sachs, but who deny opting for screening IVF embryos because they are against destroying embryos on a religious basis.
If germline gene-editing is some day shown to be safe, Savulescu thinks there would then be a moral imperative to use it to prevent conditions such as deafness.
