How to write a desi story? (Part 2)

Check out part 1 for more insights.

Language- Language is a big part of the story, even if the major writing language is English, you need to know that in desi countries there are more languages than you can count. Knowing that two characters that come from different parts of a desi country will have a huge difference, especially in speech will enhance your story.

Food- Food, as culture and language changes along different places. In a desi story, food needs (Yes needs) to have flavor, desi people love experimenting with different spices and having a blend of taste in their culinary. Food also depends on the place it is set in, for example seafood dishes are common near coastal areas. The availability of resources in places matters in the making of dishes.

Clothing and Jewellery- Clothing is very VERY important. Desis love bright colours, intricate embroidery, different dyes, different styles of wearing one piece of clothing (ALSO JEWELLERY). Desi culture tends to also have beautiful carvings of mostly natural factors like peacocks, flowers, leaves etc. And ofc like always remember, IT DIFFERS WITH EVERY REGION as the culture differs.

Some Golden Rules to remember-

CULTURE (may it be any factor) differs with region and not only little differences, HUGE ones. So be very careful of which area you are choosing and research on the culture where your character comes from.

Pintrest can be your jaan jigri dost (it means basically a really good friend) when it comes to visual reference for a character or culture. It's a great way to get an idea for what aesthetic your story has.

Music and books. You can listen to a vast variety of desi music, although it may take you a lot of time figuring out which suits your vibe since there's a huge variety but in the end it might just contribute to your writing. Books written about desi stories or by desi authors are also a great way to enhance your knowledge on writing a story like this.

Just keep researching. Research is a huge factor of any story so even if you're not writing the story at the moment, try to keep researching to know more about it for when you start.
