I gotta be honest. I’m pro-Wolfstar, but I’m also pro-Remadora (to some extent). I’m pro-Jegulus, but I’m also pro-Jily. Let’s not call the people who ship the het (canon, mind you) ships “homophobic.” That doesn’t make sense. at all.

I hate to be all whingy like this again and I swear I'll try to stop sharing my thoughts on this soon but PLEASE tell me I'm not the only one who's noticed that quite often, a pretty big number of (NOT ALL) jily fans get really angry about Lily being hated and shat on by Jegulus fans but I NEVER see Jegulus fans hating on Lily/jily?? I mean I'm constantly hit with jily fans yelling about how we all hate women and hate that they're canon and erase Lily but I can name probably 1 time I've seen a Jegulus fan hate on Lily and they were an awful person outside of that too. I think they probably haven't actually seen any Jegulus content (especially past the first little layer of it) and just assume that we all hate Lily and jily but we DON'T. And it's really annoying be she obviously people see that and go 'oh my god this is awful' and spread it and then everyone thinks we're horrible and then they spread it and suddenly it's this big epidemic of 'oh my god Jegulus haters all hate Lily and think she's an incubator' when I've never seen any examples of that past like those few weirdos in 2022.

Like I used to love both ships but jily fans have just been getting more and more angry and toxic and saying that I must hate Lily and it's totally pushing me away from liking them anymore bc I don't get why we're being called misogynists and toxic when they're yelling about things almost all of us haven't done? I'm sure there are some but it's really such a minority (and I'm pretty sure most of them are 12 year olds anyway).

Also a little off topic but the 'the series wouldn't exist without jily' is such a weird argument to me too bc I literally never denied that? I never denied that they're canon and I never said that the fandom would exist without them, I just don't care about what's canon. Like I know that if I make Lily a lesbian and decide that she doesn't marry James, Harry wouldn't exist, but I don't really care about the lightning era anyway so I don't get why it's such a common argument.

Sometimes it IS misogyny and we should call that out, but not ALWAYS.

Anyway that's all, it's just getting on my nerves so much lately.

How James Potter's character discourse could have been easily solved by JKR

Now, I love redemption arcs. While I would probably never get with a guy in real life who hurt me in the past, I love seeing how a guy can atone and build a loving relationship with a girl who was hurt by him in the past and how the girl came to forgive him. I love seeing male characters become better men. Bonus if the men had to grovel to prove themselves hah.

So in theory, I should like James Potter and Jily. However, I don't. I used to like James when I first got into HP but the fan discourse really soured me on him, especially the victim blaming and glorification of bullying. I also did not like how James' bad side was usually swept under the rug in the fics I read.

The main problem with James Potter is the show vs tell with his redemption. On screen/on page, we see his awful moments first-hand or see his problematic behaviour justified or downplayed by the narrative. However, we only hear about his good moments second-hand. That's why James discourse is circular and tiring.

To make it worse, we hear about his good moments in arguably not objective contexts. Of course, Remus and Sirius will big up their mate to his son when he expresses doubt. Of course, Minerva and Dumbledore will speak highly of someone from their own house who was a good athlete and headboy. Of course, people usually don't speak ill of the dead - especially loving parents who died as martyrs protecting their son. Of course Snape can't be trusted because he is a mean, nasty teacher. So when we hear these things about James, there's always that lingering doubt about whether the claims are completely true.

Moreover, Sirius and Remus never tell us how James redeemed himself. Just that he deflated his head...what the hell does that mean?? Did James apologize or express regret about hurting people? I need more details.

Another problem is that James died young so we never got to really see him as a mature adult. So to estimate his behaviour, we have to look at his friends (birds of a feather flock together) but Sirius and Remus are...questionable. Still love you Sirius! Best marauder hands down buddy! I love your family :)

So! How could JKR fix this if she wanted to? Simple. Have Sirius or Remus show Harry a pensive memory of James post SWM.

It always bothered me how little Harry seemed to care about his parents. Remus and Sirius were right there - why not ask about all the marauder adventures? Hagrid composed that album for him in book 1 from people who were supposedly friends with the Potters - why not reach out to them? Harry comes to you accusing James of tricking Lily into being with him...why not help him out by showing James as a good boyfriend and person? Why not show him a pensieve memory of how he proved himself to Lily? Or a memory of James being a just headboy? I would have loved to see some heartwarming James moments. It would not erase what he did to Snape but at least James would be better portrayed as a good person who just hated that nobody Slytherin out of immaturity.

Anyway, I think how James was written makes for a richer narrative but a lot could have been solved in fandom if JKR showed us some good James moments free of bias. James Potter is a character I am partially primed to like! I just needed to see how he changed. Being a good parent and husband is not enough. Evil characters can be good family men too so that means nothing. Jily is not good enough evidence that James was a changed man.

Hi, I know I'm over a week late and all, but I couldn't leave it be cause this subject is really a sensitive matter to me for tragic personal reasons. I want to say that the reason you don't remember James ever "continuously asking Lily out; sexually harassing Lily; always asking her out and not taking no for an answer" is not because it's been a while since you read the books and forgot, no, it's simply because is DOESN'T HAPPEN IN THE BOOKS! PERIOD! It's not CANON and it boils my blood to no end when people make shit like this up and make such grave accusations when anyone owns the books and can check on their own that this did NOT happen in them! I dare anyone to bring forth any passage from the books that says any of that! The more they insist that this is canon, the angrier and more offended and hurt I get! I'm endlessly sorry about anyone's personal experience with such crimes (if I wasn't clear enough, I'm unfortunately familiar with them, too) but that does not change simple facts of what happened in the books, what IS and what is NOT canon and it's not an excuse to spread lies so insistently and passionately. Either this is willfully spreading lies or, and I will give benefit of the doubt, it's just people confusing canon with fanon after being in fandom and reading fanfics too much, in which case I would suggest rereading the books and brushing up with the canon knowledge, before spreading such harmful and hurtful rhetoric :/

hi, thank you for this ask and i’m sorry for what you’ve had to go through as well. yeah, i haven’t heard anyone contradict what i said in that post so i assume it was just something the fandom made up. i’m sure ace just confused fanon with canon— no victim would purposefully be spreading lies like that even if they did hate james because they would know how serious sexual abuse is having gone through it themselves. plus i’ve seen them complain about the same things with what some marauders fans say about snape, so i’m sure they didn’t do it on purpose and their intentions were good. but i won’t put it past other people in the hp fandom/snapedom to use it as a bandwagon to continue shitting on james without doing their due diligence and checking if something as serious as that is true or not.

i do agree that people need to be more focused on what is canon and what isn’t, especially with the harry potter fandom since its so large and very removed from a lot of its content, and especially if they are in the snapedom and the marauders fandom, because both fandoms seem to get the most carried away with their characters in my personal experience. i’ve seen people throw around creepy allegations at many characters and it really hurts and annoys me too, even if those characters are considered nasty. it’s one thing to say something like “[x] canonly likes porridge” (who cares in this instance) or “[x] is canonly gay” (annoying and probably ignorant but also whatever), and then say “[x] canonly sexually harrassed [y]” (….helllo??? cant speak for everyone but its definitely offensive to me lol). sometimes concentrated sub-fandoms may be a little like echo chambers so its good to brush up then and again on certain things. its good to interrogate people’s opinions and challenge them. you dont have to comment or reblog (i know i don’t…. usually 🧍‍♀️) but it can keep you from falling into repeating things that just confuse (or worse, hurt) people more.

I think it's funny how they don't realize that talking about Regulus as part of the Jily dynamic or story or family in every single post is ALREADY the definition of invading the Jily tag lol, even if those posts also mention Jily romance. Because wth is Regulus???? He's a stranger and a random dude for both James and Lily who they never even talked to, why is he supposed to be pushed into their relationship or posts? He's completely irrelevant and unrelated to them (and to the era at that, tbh, why is he suddenly the main character of the Marauders? I must have missed the part when he became a Marauder..). Why should Jily shippers put up with this absolutely out of nowhere random dude mentioned in every single post in their tag, and romantically at that? What's not clicking for these people?

Imagine being a Lizzie and Darcy fan and going to their tag to enjoy with fellow enjoyers and suddenly 4 out of every 5 posts includes Mr Collins and how they're in a poly relationship or how Darcy loves them both or how he's part of their family or raises their kids and many more. And if you're bewildered and bring this up they attack you cause it's all fictional and they can do what they want!! WHAT IS THIS INSANITY? It can drive anyone mad lmao

Of course it is fictional. But even fiction is categorised in bookshops and libraries. Imagine going to the scifi-thriller section and it is all Kardashian books. To one person that could be thriller. But it is not the general definition and it is unhelpful to categorise it so.

When you have a shared space you need to play nice. Most people learned that when they were five years old. These fans forgot or never learnt.

honestly i agree with you. people who have nothing to contribute to fandom but negativity and criticism of fan-made content are a drain on fandoms: they scare, intimidate or simply tire out creators (who are the ones keeping fandoms running!) and contribute nothing of value. my motto has always been "if it doesn't exist, i'll make it myself" and i've learned to do and appreciate all types of things because of it (photography! video and photo edits! drawing and painting! writing! making comics and pins! embroidery!). i love fandoms with creative forces and imaginative people, because they inspire and teach me so much (there are so many things i dont know and every person is so unique in how they think, i love being shown new things!). i dont like fandoms chock-full of police who'll tell me i'm wrong for, idk, shipping remus and lily. that stifles creativity and joy.

the great thing about fandom & fics & ao3 is that we’re making material we want !!! not trying to force others to make material we want - because that’s going against the whole fandom is a free space thing !!!!!

And when people say there’s a lack of wlw fics they meab that the ‘big writers’ aren’t writing wlw focused fics. there are so many on ao3 already - admittedly not as many as wolfstar because s & r have much more background than marlene and dorcas , for example. And fanfic is supposed to be chill. people don’t have to develop characters and flesh them out if that’s not their thing.

and your motto & the way you’re going about it is so right. LIKE YES !!! DO THESE THINGS !!! I’M SO HAPPY YOU DO DO THEM !!! and if you or someone who does things like you ever feel obliged to share your art form , we should be GRATEFUL not saying ‘oh my remus isn’t like that’ (this doesn’t apply to things like dark-skin dorcas & plus-size peter - if you don’t do these things then it gets into a whole different issue)

& yes !!! I love seeing the diff interpretations of characters - that’s what makes each story so fun and unique . Like (for example) I like Draco in Dramione Fics and I like Draco in Drarry fics , but ( at least in the ones I’ve read) they’re VASTLY different . And honestly, that’s one of the reasons why I love them.

ship whoever you want!!! no one has a canon sexuality!!! (except dumbledore but who’s shipping that crusty old bellend with anyone anyways - though i’ve read a couple of grindelore oneshots myself) . do whatever makes you happy !!! I don’t ship remus and lily and a bunch of other ships (some in my head are so so disgusting and gross but i won’t say their names) , never have , never will - so I don’t read their fics - and especially don’t tell someone what they can and can’t do. like use the goddamn tag system . it’s there for a reason , you twats.

tl:dr - stop policing what people can and cannot do. stop demanding things. stop putting fanfic under the perspective you’d put a traditional author. as anon rightly said , it stifles creativity & joy.

Look, I'm not one of those people who needs my ship to be canon to be happy, but the number of people who are like "yeah, shipping wolfstar is fine and all but it's not reaaallly canon." And they say it with their whole chest.

But it could be.

Like, Dumbledore's relationship with Grindelwald was never mentioned in canon (retcon or not). No one had ever mentioned to Harry that his mother was friends with Snape. He was given basically no information about his parents other than ~his mother's green eyes and father's messy hair~. I really don't think it's too wild to infer that there was a shitload that went on that we're not aware of.

Therefore, Wolfstar is just as likely of a ship as pairing them with someone else.

I was trying to illustrate the difference between Disney adults and Harry Potter adults to a friend, and remembered that I had gotten the most unhinged ask from a Snapewife/ snily shipper and because Tumblr continues to be Tumblr, I can’t find it. do we or do we not deserve a marauders series??? i mean, harry potter is dead now, i mean like there's nothing more you can do about harry's story, the fandom lives ofc, but like i feel marauders have better shenanigans.......like it'd be so good, plus we get an insight of the characters which simplifies stuff (like the never ending war whether snape was redeemed at the end or not)......the marauders were in hogwarts around the same time voldemort was recruiting death eaters so wouldn't it be like interesting to see what people thought and stuff? like, it'd be so much fun.......

btw, i simply adore your fanfics, they are one of the best ones i've ever read......i was wondering if you have any jily fanfics too? please guide me since i was unable to find any.....

Honestly, I don't want a Marauders Series unless it's one of the fanmade ones. I think anything made by JKR or a major company would ruin it for me, you know? Partially because JKR is shit and partially because any answers just...wouldn't live up to my own imagination. The draw of the fandom is that it's fandom. Part of the fun is discourse about characters and different POVs on what we think is most likely to occur. But that's just my opinion <3

I don't have any Jily fanfics right now! I'm too obsessed with Jegulus, but I've been considering writing Jegulily!

I love these two as Jily fancasts when I see them in edits so much but let me just say, Oscar Isaac is Cuban and Guatemalan, so he doesn’t fit under the ‘Desi/South Asian James potter’ that he’s categorized with.

This happens with Nick Greene too, who also is not Desi.

HOWEVER

I think this opens up space for more discussion and headcanon! I, as a cuban (I don’t know how better to state that sorry), think that this is very cute and I like it because I think seeing that representation, even if it’s just in edits, is so freaking cool!

Oscar Isaac has one of those faces that could potentially be from anywhere but I thought I should bring this up after seeing the nick green discourse in the marauders fandom a few months back.

I think the beautiful thing about this fandom is that it’s so open to new ways of characterization for these beloved characters because we were the ones that characterized them and in the first place.

So yes, I like Oscar Isaac as a James Fancast a lot, and this is a small, probably insignificant thing to prod at. But, I think it’s important that if we’re so focused on representation, we should do it faithfully and respectfully.

(Latino!James potter deserves some love and headcanon too)

incoherent rant about ship discourse under the cut

I strongly dislike the argument against jegulus "but jily is the only canon ship in the marauders fandom and jegulus ruins it!" So??!??! A huge part of this fandom is that we simply do not care about canon most of the time!!! There is an abundance of canon non-compliant fanfiction out there, probably more than canon compliant. There are far better arguments out there. That being said though, many of the ones I have heard fall flat if you think about them more, and many of them apply only to specific headcanons and don't work at all for specifc people's perception of the ship. And, most people in the fandom think about the characters in fanon, and anti-jegulus arguments which rely on canon aren't going to make any impact on those people. Sorry for spewing all this randomly, this is just something that bugs me quite a lot.

if my one mutual I know irl sees this im going to be dead but fuck it???

(To clarify, I am NOT against jily, I will willingly consume content about it, I have just been preferring jegulus recently due to the fact that it is all over my dash and I barely see and jily-centric content. This is in no way anti-Jily, I just wanted to state how I feel on this matter.)
