54. “I don’t hate you. I could never hate you. That’s the problem.” that's a jily quote if i've ever seen one
"I'm taking away house points for that."
James gasped, "What? Betray your own brethren? Would you truly stoop so low, Evans?"
Lily glared at him, "Yes. It's literally my duty as a prefect."
"Remus never takes away house points or reports me."
Lily folded her arms, "Well then maybe you should choose him to fall in love with."
"That would be easier."
"Yes, it would."
James backed away from the statue of armour that now had his initials painted onto its chest.
He bit his bottom lip in thought before turning back to Lily, "Why do you hate me?"
Lily stared at him for a moment, not replying.
He nodded with resignation and slowly walked back down the hall, slightly downtrodden.
Lily fell to the floor immediately after he had turned the corner, and glanced up to his initials on the armour. She now noticed her own initials next to it and couldn't help a smile making its way to her face.
Lily stared at the statue as she spoke, "I don't hate you. I could never hate you, that's the problem."
"What was that, Red?" Sirius grinned, rushing down the stairs.
"Nothing!"

Sirius: I dare you to kiss the prettiest person in the room
Lily: Severus?
Snape: y-yes?
Lily: can you please move out of the way?
Snape: *heart sinking* sure
James: *realises he’s now facing Lily directly and starts smirking* finally fell for me, Evans?
Lily: get out of the way, Potter!
James: what?
Lily: I’m over this stupid game and you’re blocking the door
Remus: *laughs from the couch*

Jily Microfic March 1: Troubled
Tumblr media
@jilymicrofics, 300 words. On AO3. 🦡💛
Sirius sidles up next to her on the sofa, invading her personal space. Lily ignores him.
“Trouble in paradise already?”
Lily stays buried in her book and pretending to read.
“James is up in the dorm moping around and you’re here all —” he waves a careless hand in front of her face, “— concentrated essence of fuming rage.”
Lily snaps her book shut and glares at Sirius. “Did he tell you what happened?”
Sirius shrugs. “He said you got into a fight, and you gave him detention.”
“Exactly!” Lily jabs Sirius’ chest with a vicious finger. “We’re seventh years. He’s a Head Boy! He can’t go around hexing Slytherins for the hell of it. I thought he’d grown out of it, but I don’t know. Maybe I was too hasty. Maybe I need to rethink this whole relationship.”
“Maybe. But before you rethink anything, you should hear the whole story.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Sirius gives her a look, his grey eyes alarmingly cynical in a face so young. “The Slytherins were saying he was finally fully embracing his Blood Traitor status, going out with a Mudblood.”
“Oh.” Lily’s anger ebbs, her heart softens, her shoulders slump. She blows out a frustrated sigh. “I don’t need him defending my honour. It’s not 1877!”
“Sure, you can fight your own battles, but with James, you’ll have to pick them, too. He’s a Gryffindor through and through, love. His chivalrous streak is a mile wide.”
Her lips twitch. Sirius is not wrong.
“I guess I brought this on myself.”
“It’s still new. You guys will figure it out.” Sirius pats her shoulder and slips out.
Lily stays on the sofa, deep in thought. She’ll let James brood, for now. They can make up later.
They have all the time in the world.

Lily had to have shown James muggle music right, so, in 1980, they’re at the height of the war, John Lennon drops ‘Double Fantasy’, Lily’s always been a fan of the Beatles, so, James gets it.
One night after that the couple get awoken by Harry’s crying, James yawns, “I got him,” he had said. After a few too many long minutes, Lily got up and sluggishly made her way to the baby room.
James swayed as he rocked Harry back and forth, as Lily tiredly strained to hear, catching the end of James’ soft voice,
“—beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy.”

this might get me sent to the trenches but i have to say it….. i miss good old Jily. i miss the unintentional academic rivals of Lily wanting to excel and James being naturally good at everything, and it’s an un going battle between them as they grow up.
I miss James with a huge crush who would stare at Lily completely awestruck and make a fool out of himself trying to get her attention because he is just a thirteen year old boy with a crush on the smart, radiant, beautiful Lily Evans. I miss Lily perhaps drying James even has a crush and not fathoming the idea because why would someone like JAMES POTTER like her??
I miss reading about their nights in the library and during Head Boy and Girl patrol through the hallways, and how James would probably show Lily the secret passages him and the Marauders (Mostly Remus) Have discovered during their years at Howarts.
I miss Lily in her dorm admitting to Marlene, Mary and Alice that she has it bad, REAL BAD, for James Potter.
I miss their dates, double dates with Remus and Sirius, triple dates with Dorcas and Marlene, quadruple dates with Frank and Alice, and the nights they would spend listening to each others favorite music and talking about their families, and their worries, and their shared insecurities over having to be perfect in order to be accepted and wanting so so so bad to be truly and deeply loved but also so so so very scared of doing so.
I miss their huge wedding with everyone there and Sirius as the best man, James tearing up at the aisle as he watched Lily walk towards him, and Flaremont and Euphemia are there, smiling, watching their beautiful boy glow with happiness. And the War has been horrible, taken so much from everyone, but they have each other, and they love so so so so much.
And i Miss the tragedy of it all. James dying first, and Lily dying second. How after all those years of rivalry, pining, confessions, dates, laughter, love love love, they didn’t have much time at all
But i miss the love they did have when they were alive, and how it literally and ultimately was the reason the War ended and Voldemort was finally defeated.
I’m just going to leave that there ….

Summary: Something's not so heavenly about Lily's potion. A 100-word drabble @jilymicrofics
Read on AO3 or under the cut!
Lily stands in front of her cauldron, studying her potion. The smell that reaches her nostrils brings a frown to her face.
That can’t be right.
She opens a jar she hadn’t used until now and –
“No! What are you doing!” Mary slaps her hand away from the cauldron. “You don’t put dung beetle juice in Amortentia!”
“It needs something,” Lily protests. “It’s wrong.”
“It’s not wrong! It’s got the perfect sheen and it smells divine.”
Lily mumbles something unintelligible.
“What?”
Her words come out again just a tad clearer, in a really small, tiny voice.
“It smells like Potter.”
Thanks to @annasghosts for the inspiration and @athenasparrow for the beta!

@jilymicrofics | April Prompts: No. 30 Grass | Words: 221
Spring was in full swing and flowers had started popping up along the edge of the forbidden forest amongst the tall grass, transforming it from a sea of green to a carpet of bluebells. They acted as the perfect backdrop for a lazy afternoon. James leant against a broad oak tree, Lily laying with her head in his lap reading some muggle novel she’d been gifted at Christmas. He ran his fingers through her long hair and she hummed appreciatively, closing the book on her lap and looking up at him.
“What?” He smiled down at her, trying to read her expression.
“This is nice. I love these quiet moments with you,” she answered softly.
“And I love you.” The words left him quicker than he could process them.
For a heartbeat he panicked as she shifted out of his lap and turned to face him properly. Discarding her book in the grass to pay him her undivided attention. They’d only been dating a few months, it was far too soon for him to be letting declarations of love fly free so easily.
“You don’t have to say it back.” James said hurriedly. “I just-”
“What if I want to?” She teased, leaning in and pressing a gentle kiss to his lips before pulling away. “I love you too, you twit.”

I think this is the last of them for now! Five minute fics are fun, and I forgot how much I like my little jily prompt generator!
wc: 500
"Lily." James said, unbuttoning the top button of his shirt. "Oh! You're awfully close- are we, are we going to kiss now?"
"You wish." Lily said, as she brushed her hair back behind her ear.
Things had not really gone according to any of the plans Lily had come up with before they set out to do rounds tonight. Of course, most of her plans had included rounds being particularly dull, nothing exciting happening, no one throwing any kind of potions at them.
“It’s really starting to burn now.” James said, his fingers trembling a bit as he continued to work at the buttons of his shirt.
Her plans especially didn’t involve hiding in a broom cupboard with James Potter while they both stripped out of their clothes to avoid getting burned by the potion.
“Hurry up and get your shirt off!” She said, ripping her own cloak off and throwing it to the floor. She started running her hands up and down her sides, checking for any more of the potion. The poor sixth year Ravenclaw hadn’t expected to see anyone on her walk from the extra potions room to the classroom where she was going to store her end of term project.
“I can’t even see the buttons.” James cursed under his breath and Lily continued patting down her clothes.
“We should have ran to the loo. Why did we get in the cupboard?”
“It was what was closest and the girl looked like she was going to start crying.”
Lily watched as James’ hands continued to tremble and then she swatted them away and started undoing the buttons for him. “You not moving fast enough.” She said when she felt his eyes on her. “You’re going to get burned.”
“Right.” His voice is lower.
“Don’t do that. You got a caldron of potion dumped on you. I’m helping.”
“I know.”
“Good.” She finished with the buttons and James stepped back as much as he could to pull the shirt off. It joins her cloak on the floor. His undershirt has a significant blotch of the potion on it too, and he’s quick to add that to the pile. Lily has to turn away from him to hide her blush.
“Alright, now we should find you something to transform into a shirt.” She looked on the wall behind him when the door to the cupboard is opened.
A completely flabbergasted Professor McGonagall stood in the opening and the three of them just stared at one another for a long time.
“It’s not what it looks like.” Lily blurted out.
“I already ran into Priyanka.” Their professor stepped back. “Are the two of you alright?”
“Yes, professor.” James crossed his arms over his chest and tried to turn so his shoulder was facing the older woman.
“James took the brunt of it. He probably needs to go to the hospital wing.”
“Alright. And why a broom cupboard?”
“Yes, we were asking ourselves that question too.”

Red
@jilymicrofics
Red was always a color that mattered to Lily and James.
It was the color of her hair. The scarlet of the house that brought them together. The color of their cheeks after their first kiss. Of gifted roses and the brick of their first flat. Their whole lives were painted in shades of red.
Here and now, sinking into the scarlet sofa in their living room, Lily thought of red, the passion, love, and depth of the color and that's why Lily, with out a doubt, simply had to paint their nursery room red.
Now this is an impulse decision, and very out of character for my dear Mrs. Potter but she was extremely pregnant and just wanted a red house. So with nothing more than that she went to her nearest Wilkes and bought a can of bright red paint. In a few hours she was done and just as she was pulling the tape off the walls she heard the arrival of her husband. She scrubbed wildly as the bit of red paint on her cheek as she waddled down the stairs to greet James.
He swooped in with kisses without even noticing the red paint still covering her overalls. As he pulled away he looked at her skeptically. "May I ask why you're covered in paint?"
She smiled sheepishly as she slowly took his hand and led him upstairs. "I just didn't think grey was the right color for the nursery?"

A drabble for Day One of jilytober! @jilytoberfest
A Picture and A Smile
“Smile!”
Her voice is bright, carefree, and utterly at ease.  Before James knows what is happening the young woman next to him slings an arm around his neck and draws him in close to her side.
Immediately, he’s enveloped by the warm scents of vanilla and honeycomb and Lily Evans is there.  She’s leaning into him with a smile and a laugh as one hand extends out holding a polaroid camera.  The picture snaps before James knows what’s happening.
They’re in the shadows of the ice cream parlor, one of the tables nestled close to the wall and away from any prying eyes.  It doesn’t stop the heat of the late summer day though.  The sun is high in a startling blue sky and makes for a
When Lily pulls away she narrows her eyes at him. “You did smile, didn’t you?”
“Warn a guy next time, yeah?” James tries to scowl, but it’s Lily and she’s the sun incarnate that he can only grin cheekily at her.
“That’s why I yelled smile, Potter,” she says.  She takes the picture as it’s ejected from the camera.
It takes him a moment to realize that the camera is muggle, not wizard.  He can tell by the winding noises it makes, the worn edges, and the flash was just a little too dull to be from a wizard's contraption.
They’re in Diagon Alley just days away from the start of seventh year.  Barely two months ago they’d been saying good-bye, hesitantly exchanging hugs.  But there had been a change in their friendship.  Something new and tentative.  And now that they’re friends.
Lily sighs and looks over the picture as it slowly takes form.  “Well, I guess this is acceptable.”
“Of course it’s acceptable, it’s a picture of me,” James says.  He snatches the photo, ignoring her gasp of protest.
“James!” she reaches across him and tries to snag the photo back.
He easily keeps her at bay.  She’s smaller than him and his long arms put plenty of distance between Lily and the photo.
James takes a look at the photo.  It still has a pale white sheen to it, but the vibrant red to Lily’s hair is hard to miss.  And the grin on her lovely face oozes joy as she leans into James.  He’s blurry as he’s trying to look between her and the camera with hardly any time to prepare.  But it’s him.  His wild hair and askew glasses.
Just the two of them.
“I’m smudged!” he says.
“Because you moved.”  She manages to pluck the picture from him and sets it before her on the table.
They’re just outside Fortesques, ice cream long since eaten.  They’re supposed to be discussing how they’ll approach being Head Boy and Girl together.  They’re supposed to be preparing patrols and speeches and ground rules.  They’re supposed to be making this year easier for professors and students alike.
Instead, they’re eating ice cream.  They’re laughing.  They’re talking.  They’re--
“One more,” Lily says.  She leans into James again and holds the camera aloft. “And try to behave.”
“I always behave,” he replies.  Her narrowed eyes and slight tilt of her head tell him that she doesn’t believe him.  James can only laugh as he slings an arm around her shoulder to pull her close.  So close that it’s distracting.  That maybe this could be more than just a picture, that this could be a new normal for them.
Hell.  There’s just something about her he can’t get over.  And if he were the same person he was even two years ago he would have tried to steal a kiss.
He grins as the camera flashes.  Maybe one day he’ll get that kiss.  For now, he laughs as Lily scowls and waits for that little polaroid to develop.  He already tried convincing her to get a spelled camera, but she refuses.  Some things are meant to be mundane.
James thinks he’s beginning to understand what she means by that and is more than willing to accept it for himself too.
...
i hope to share more throughout the month, but for now, here’s this!

MAKE A WISH, HARRY A @jilymicrofics. Prompt: birthday. Words: 106.
"Make a wish, Harry!" Lily grinned at her blubbering, gurgling, one-year-old son sitting atop James's lap.
Harry looked slightly alarmed by the small flame. He leant back into his father's chest.
"It's alright, bubba," James soothed. "Look at Mumma, Harry, look." He pointed to the redhead smiling widely on the other side of the small birthday cake.
She mocked blowing out the colourful candles and Harry responded by blowing a loud raspberry. James swiftly blew on the candles from behind his son, extinguishing them instantly.
Across the thin lines of smoke Lily laughed and applauded. Harry copied.
James smirked. “I think he wished for a broomstick.”

NEWTs and Lily
Out of all the ways, James thought that he might come to know about Evans' "feelings" for him, a certain brown-haired crotchety friend wasn't one of them.
Read it on ao3 or ff.net or read below under the cut (insp.)
James was currently lounging in his favorite armchair in the Gryffindor common room, by the fire, with million textbooks open on the coffee table in front of him. NEWTs were approaching fast and that was pretty much what all the seventh-year students could talk about, after all, it was the most important exam of their lives, and the marks obtained in it could determine one’s whole future. So, that’s why James found himself studying at 3 a.m. alongside Remus in the common room. The whole common room was empty which was… weird, but then again why would one study in the common room when you can do the exact same in the comfort of your own dormitory? Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case with Remus and James, because apparently, their friends decided that their sleep was more important than their entire future.
“Moony do you think that—” James started absentmindedly, turning to Remus.
“YES! LILY LIKES YOU JAMES! SHE TOLD ME THAT! STOP TALKING NOW AND STUDY!” Remus bellowed at him; this wasn’t all that shocking to James as Remus usually got quite….grumpy when he did not have enough sleep.
“oh—that’s okay,” James said nodding, still enough sleep deprived that Remus’ words didn’t sink in on him, “I just wanted to ask if there was homework,” James mumbled.
There was silence after that broken only by the scribbling of quills as the two boys wrote on a sheet of parchment. After what could have been 2 minutes or 2 hours, James looked up at Remus, shocked, and yelled, “LILY—WHAT?!” but Remus just shook his head and went back to work, leaving James to wonder about what his friend said all night long.

Jily Microfic March 14: Enthralled
Tumblr media
@jilymicrofics, 100 words. On AO3. 🦡💛
He was fast asleep. Lips parted; tiny fist curled against his cheek. Every now and then he would make a small noise, or a limb might twitch, but he slumbered on, deep in dreams.
James stood by the bassinet, his hands stuffed in his pockets to keep from reaching out. He was so small and delicate, a miracle that stopped his breath and slammed him with love. James had always been one to love freely and deeply, but it had never overtaken him with such an all-encompassing force, than now when he stared at his son and guarded his sleep.

Happy Diwali, Claudia! So sorry you're not able to celebrate with your family 🫂. OK, my prompt is: Three, two, one.
Love Robyn
Hey Robyn 🧡🧡 thank you so much! I loved this prompt, and was able to write the silliest thing ever because of it:
Three Two One
“And we’re sure this is going to work?” Lily whispered harshly, one eye trained on the corridor outside as she watched from within the tiniest crack in the broom cupboard’s doors. “Because if this doesn’t work, I’m going to have to hex you for making me sit on top of a dusty old bucket for thirty minutes.”
“Ye of little faith, Evans. It’s going to work. So well that even he will be impressed.” She allowed herself to look at him for one moment—not that she properly could, given how dark it was inside the tiny space, despite the lumos they'd cast—and watched as his hazel eyes flew across the wrinkled parchment spread open over his lap. “He should be here in another fifteen seconds.”
“How are you estimating that?”
“Based on Padfoot’s average speed of walking.”
She stared at him, mouth ajar. “Can’t tell if you’re joking.”
But James simply grinned, teeth glinting bright in the darkness, and when her pulse fluttered stupidly, she turned back to stare at the corridor, cheeks pink. “You’re absurd.”
“Now, now, Evans, we’re on the same team here.” He scooted forward an inch, knee knocking into hers. Lily refused to entertain her heart’s thumping. “Don’t forget we were locked into cupboards three times this week already. Three. Direct your irritation at the right person.”
“The right person being your best-mate,” she deadpanned. “You need to put him on a leash.”
James snickered under his breath, seemingly more amused by her comment than he had any right to be. “If it helps, I’ve tried getting him to stop, but he thinks pushing us into smelly places together will get us to finally snog or something.”
“It doesn’t help,” she said immediately, face heating up. “And shut up, I can hear footsteps.”
He fell quiet as directed, and when Sirius’s form appeared down the hallway, a jagged piece of mirror in hand and a confused frown on his brows, Lily’s eyes flashed meaningfully at James. He nodded, shifting closer as she pointed the tip of her wand to the figure outside, keeping just barely enough space between the doors for the wood to poke through.
“Three, two, one,” James mouthed, folding fingers in sync.
She flicked her wand, muttering the incantation under her breath, and smirked at the yelp of surprise outside.
“WHAT THE BLOODY FUCK—”
“No need to wake the whole castle, mate,” James laughed, throwing open the doors with full dramatic flair. Lily couldn’t blame him; she was feeling pretty arrogant herself.
The Pumpkin-Head jinx had effectively encased Sirius’s head inside the largest, organge-est pumpkin Lily had ever seen in her life. With a little experimentation, she had been able to leave slits for eyes and a mouth on the fruit, so that Sirius—now sitting on the ground, on account of the sudden appearance of an added weight on his head—could see how fantastically he’d been trounced by them. Plus, she thought it quite suited the Halloween decorations slowly coming alive in the castle.
“PRONGS?! What the fuck?! Did you do this?”
Lily scoffed, walking closer. “Please. It was me.”
“Hey! What’s with the credit hogging? I helped!”
“But why?” Sirius cried. “Is this revenge?”
“Actually, yes, it is.” Lily smiled, saccharine-sweet, watching him struggle to get the pumpkin off his head fruitlessly. “No point trying, you prat. It won’t come off for twelve hours.”
“WHAT?” His grey eyes widened inside the pumpkin slits. “Is this what I get for trying to help?”
“No one asked for your help, mate.” James let out a long-suffering sigh. “Least of all us. Also, broom cupboards? Really?”
The pumpkin thunked back against the wall in defeat. “I just thought—”
“There was no need,” Lily said, and shared a secret grin with James. Now came part two of their revenge. With one smooth tug at his hand, she pulled herself flush against James’s chest, fingers reaching up to tangle in the mess of his hair as he leaned down to capture her lips with his. For a moment—or two—or three—Lily lost herself in the warmth of his mouth and arms, body humming with relief at finally being allowed to do this after they’d been cooped up in that cupboard, diligently waiting to strike.
Eventually, a loud, strangled noise had them breaking apart, faces flushed.
“Are you bloody kidding me?!” Sirius’s voice groaned, but Lily could spy a hint of amusement in there now. “I hate you so much that I’m sort of impressed.”
James laughed, eyes bright, and winked at her. “See? Told you.”
