What about the kids (CBBH) seeing the ‘mudblood’ scar on Vix arm for the first time, and then the kids, specially Draco, trying to comfort her.
James and Sirius feeling guilty again because (James) “abandoned” her (no he didn’t) and (Sirius) cause he couldn’t protect her
Thank you so much, feel free to ignore it if you want to, but thank you anyway

The Mind Forgets but the Heart Doesn't
It had been a really trying week.
Percy and the Twins had gotten into it during class one day this week at Potter Manor, and though James and Molly did what they could to placate the situation when it happened, it seemed to bleed out into the other kids as well.
Harry and Draco didn’t seem to be able to agree on anything at all anymore, Jasmine felt the need to play mediator to their squabbles which just aggravated everyone further, and Aurora was far too sensitive for her own good and took everything anyone said personally.
The adults didn’t seem to be fairing much better either.
You and Lily were expecting at the same time. It was very funny when Lily & James went to announce that they were expecting only to have Y/N & Sirius laugh and say ‘same’. Remus never stopped joking that the family would finally have a ‘set of twins’.
Lily stopped taking the jokes so well as her pregnancy progressed, however.
“This is absolutely, without a doubt, the last one Potter!” She screeched as she excused herself from the dinner table for the sixth time to pee.
You were such a trooper, but Sirius knew that this pregnancy was taking far more out of you both emotionally and physically than your last one had.
The part that hurt (everyone) the most, was that your brain still associated pain and discomfort with your trauma from the war, and the wounds felt far more fresh lately than they had in a long time.
This left both James and Sirius feeling horribly guilty – James for having left you on the battlefield, and Sirius both for being the cause of your current discomfort and for the months during the war that he spent wallowing when he should have been fighting for you.
Sirius would wake up in the middle of the night and reach for you to find the bed empty. He’d go to check both Aurora and Draco’s room’s first before moving on to the rest of the house.
One particularly upsetting night he found you hiding in the shower after you had a distressing and disturbingly realistic nightmare.
But usually, he found you in the kitchens.
“What are you doing up, my love?” He spoke quietly into the room.
You must have heard him coming because you never even turned your head from where you were sitting; you just offered him a quiet hum in response as he wrapped his arms around your shoulders and nuzzled his face into your neck.
His hands would migrate lower to what was usually the reason for your midnight wanders.
“Little one hungry?”
You were quiet for a moment, clearly far away from Potter Manor, before you responded.
“There were times I was only ever able to eat at night... when someone could sneak something to me or I could sneak to the kitchens. But sometimes, now, I wake up a little hungry – and my heart tells me that this is going to be my only chance, and I have to make it count. I tell myself it’s not true but... the anxiety doesn’t go away until I do something about it.”
Sure enough, in front of you on the table was a half-eaten granola bar; evidence of your late-night forage for food.
“What was it that Lily said about those muggle dementia patients?” Sirius asked you as he rubbed up and down your arms.
“The mind forgets but the heart doesn’t.” You responded quietly.
Sirius hummed into your hair as he pressed his lips to the top of your head.
“You’ve done so much work, love. But I don’t think you’ll ever be able to convince your heart to let it go – not fully.”
You sighed miserably, suddenly sounding very close to tears.
“Please be patient with yourself.” He pleaded.
“I’m trying.” You whispered wetly.
“I know, baby. I know.”
Tumblr media
This was why the following morning at the breakfast table when Harry – seemingly out of nowhere – asked what a “mudblood” was, the room fell painfully silent.
The adults all seemed to share horrified glances before Regulus spoke up.
“Where did you hear that word, Harry?”
Harry, slightly ashamed now that he seemed to have sucked the air out of the room, looked at you and motioned towards your arm.
Sure enough, as you had reached across the table to pass Remus the plate of bacon, your sleeve had ridden up and your scar was on full display.
Why’d we teach these ankle biters to read? Sirius wondered to himself.
To Sirius’ absolute horror, you seemed to completely shut down. You hastily pulled your sleeve down and moved your arms into your lap, and your eyes turned foggy.
“Please don’t occlude baby, stay with us.” Sirius begged quietly as he began to rub your arm.
“Haz, when you and Draco were very little, there was a war – do you remember me and daddy telling you about it?” Lily started cautiously.
“Uh huh, when the bad guy hated people who were different and stole Auntie Vix?”
James grimaced before confirming. “Yes, and how Uncle Reggie and Draco’s mummy Narcissa helped her escape and then defeat the bad guy.”
“Well, the bad guy and his friends did hate people who were different than them. Mostly, they hated non-magical people,” Lily continued.
“Called muggles.” Harry interjected proudly.
“Right, he hated muggles. And he hated muggle-born witches and wizards as well.” James finished.
“But...mummy and Aunt Lily are muggle-born...” Draco added quietly from his place.
James nodded. “That’s right. And because they hated them, they made up a bad word to call muggle-born’s.”
“That’s what mudblood is, Harry. It’s a bad word to call a muggle-born witch or wizard.” Regulus spoke softly.
Jasmine gasped. “Mum! Did Harry say a bad word!?”
“I was only asking a question!” Harry screeched in his own defence.
“But... why is the bad word on your arm?” Draco asked quietly, looking at you.
Your son addressing you directly seemed to pull you out of yourself a little as you offered him a sad smile. “Well, when the bad guy stole me, I wouldn’t tell him what they wanted to know.”
“What did the bad guy want to know?” Jasmine asked curiously.
Harry elbowed his sister for interrupting, which earned him a whack on the head in return, which caused Remus to switch seats with his niece in an effort to keep the peace.
“They wanted to know where your mummy and daddy and Harry were. They also wanted to know where Pads and Moony and everyone else in the Order were.”
“Like the Weasley’s!?” Harry asked in horror, as news of your best friend potentially being on some maniac’s hitlist would do to an almost nine-year-old, even though said maniac was already after him and his entire family.
“But you wouldn’t tell them.” Jasmine stated solemnly.
You nodded at your niece. “That’s right.”
“But why was my mum and Uncle Reggie there?” Draco asked.
You and Sirius both grimaced as you looked to Regulus, whose jaw seemed more tense than usual.
“Our family comes from a long line of very bad people, Draco. The Black’s...mine and your dad’s family, as well as your mums, were not kind to people who were different from them. They supported the bad guy during the war, I-”
“But dad didn’t support the bad guy...and he’s a Black.” Draco interrupted as he turned to look at his father pleadingly.
Sirius smiled softly at the boy. “Yes, but you see, Draco, I had friends like Uncle Prongs and Uncle Moony, and your mum here, who taught me that it was okay to be different. And Uncle Prongs’ family also gave me a place to go when I no longer agreed or felt safe with my family. Uncle Reggie didn’t have the same kind of friends.”
“Your friends were bad guys?” Harry asked plainly.
“Yes.” Regulus answered just as plainly.
“So...my family was...bad?” Draco asked quietly, looking between you, Sirius, and Regulus.
“Not all of them baby, not Uncle Reggie, and not your mum.” You tried to placate, but Draco didn’t bite.
“But they were there! Supporting the bad guy! That makes them bad!” He insisted.
“No, it made us cowards.” Regulus corrected the boy. “I was too afraid to ask your dad or his friends for help, even though I knew that Sirius would take me in if I asked him to. And your mum did what was expected of her, Draco. Your mum believed marrying your dad and having you was the right thing to do.”
“Draco,” you said quietly as the boy tried to fight back tears. “If your mum and Uncle Reggie hadn’t been there, I would not be alive today. And quite frankly, I think that could be the same for a lot of us in this room. They saved us, baby. Your mummy saved you. There’s nothing bad about that.”
Draco still seemed perturbed by this but looked back down to your now hidden scar.
“But someone...hurt you? With that word? Was it my family?”
You shared a look with Sirius who offered you a small nod before you answered. “It was. It was your aunt...your mum’s sister.”
Draco seemed distraught at the news; his mouth turned down miserably and his eyes filled with tears. “My family was bad.”
“Dad, was my family bad!?” Harry asked severely.
“Haz, hang on, okay bubs?” James asked quietly.
“That’s right Draco, your family was bad.” You said.
Every head – child and adult alike – whipped to face you.
“They were bad people...but they’re not anymore. Your family is the people in this room, and your mum who died protecting you. You have Uncle Reggie, who was so brave to save me and to turn against the bad guy he was supposed to be loyal to. You have Uncle Moony, who despite doing very hard things every month, doesn’t ask anything of anyone and gives so much of himself to the people he loves. And you have Uncle Prongs and Aunt Lily, who helped us raise you when daddy and I had no idea what we were doing. And you have Haz, and Jazzy, and Rory and two new siblings coming soon. That’s your family, Draco, and they’re not bad at all.”
Draco scanned the room of all the people he loved the most as a few tears fell, and Sirius was quick to catch them with his finger from his place beside him.
“I’m sorry the bad guys hurt you, mummy. I wish they hadn’t.” He offered finally.
“Oh! I know!” Aurora piped up out of nowhere (Sirius actually sort of forgot his own daughter was present at the breakfast table) and quickly stood from her seat to hurry away.
Before the adults had time to ponder where the child had gone, she reappeared beside her mum with the first aid kit from one of the loos and her toy Mediwitch Kit.
“Okay, mummy. Show Healer Ro where it hurts.” She demanded you in her most authoritative tone, which still sounded far too much like Alvin the Chipmunk to be taken at all seriously.
Sirius grinned down at his girl and pulled her up into his lap (for better access, of course) as you pulled your sleeve up on your arm to expose your scar.
Aurora tapped a fake wand to the injury and held a stethoscope to her ear. “It sounds good mummy; means you’ll be fine.”
“Oh, good.” You sighed in faux relief, failing to bite back the proud smile adorning your face.
“Yup, now just needs plasters. I have some golden snitches, unicorns, or bowtruckles, mummy. Which would you like?”
“I think she ought to have some of each, Ro.” Harry interjected from across the room.
“Quite right, Haz. Healer Ro, could you use some assistance with the plasters?” Sirius asked like a spokesman on a game show.
“Yes sir!” She answered, and each kid took turns applying plasters to your scar and kissing it better.
“Looks better already!” Jasmine cheered after their work was complete.
“Hmmmm...I don’t know...” Sirius said skeptically. “Could use a few more kisses I think.” Before he attacked you with kisses, and the kids followed in suit shortly after.

The books warn: excessive intake can cause giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence. But good luck is addictive.
They must stop.
Lily knows it as certainly as she knows her name; this had been a bad idea from the beginning.
“Just one drop,” James had said. “To take the edge off.”
One drop, dancing on her tongue before sliding down her throat; and then a boost of confidence, a clarity of mind. A little fix of luck for their first Order mission. Just so everything would go according to plan.

I’m a jegulus shipper, and I do not hate (or even dislike) Lily or jily. What I cannot stand is how Rowling decided to write jily in the books. James spending years “valiantly” trying to win Lily over, with her saying no every time, but secretly falling for him is just pushing the unhealthy message that girls don’t really mean it when they say no. Meanwhile in the Marauders fandom, Lily adamantly says ‘no’ to James every time, and he ends up falling in love with Reggie instead, leaving Lily to be able to become his friend, and making the eventual jily romance a lot healthier. The two had time apart, where James was in an entirely separate relationship, and Lily came to the conclusion that James wasn’t as pompous as she’d originally thought, and fell for him in a normal manner, where she really meant it when she’d said ‘no’, then decided way later that she did in fact feel that way for James, and was ready to date him if he wanted that.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

31 October 1981
It's been a while since I last posted....whoops. Anyway, written for @wolfstarmicrofic - 1981 (872 words)
Something was wrong. Sirius didn't know what, or where to start looking, but he knew something was off.
It was almost noon. He was waiting for Remus to arrive back from his latest mission so they could go to the Potters' house to surprise Harry for a Halloween dinner. But something was wrong and plans needed to change.
His first instinct was Remus. He had found out a month before that he had been spending time in werewolf packs, trying to convince them to switch sides. It was the most obvious place for disaster to strike. It didn't feel right, though. Remus was due back that afternoon. He hadn't sent anything to indicate that anything had gone awry, and the full had already come and gone. If anything had happened, Sirius would have heard about it already.
His gut was telling him it was something else. Someone else.
Peter. He needed to check on Peter.
Only himself, James and Remus knew where Peter was. The Order had trusted the marauders to keep the Potters' safe, and hadn't asked for information regarding the identity or location of the secret keeper. The less who knew, the better. They weren't supposed to seek him out either. The odds of leading the Death Eaters right to him were too high.
But something was wrong and Sirius needed to make sure he was safe.
He was gone within minutes, stopping only to leave a note for Remus and put on his jacket. He apparated, knowing the bike would draw too much attention and cost him too much time.
Peter's safe house was empty when he got there. There were no wards up, no charms to deter intruders. The door wasn't even locked. There were notes scattered over the kitchen counters, details of Order missions going back six months in Peter's messy handwriting. Missions he hadn't been on and shouldn't have known about. Missions that had been compromised.
His Patronus to Remus had barely left his wand when he disapparated, landing in Godric's Hollow with his wand drawn. He was hours early. The sun hadn't even set, the trick-or-treaters weren't in the street, but he didn't have time to waste.
James and Harry were in the front garden when he arrived, invisible to everyone except Sirius. Harry was laughing wildly, chasing his dad on his tiny broomstick, James jogging ahead and pretending to narrowly escape the toddler. He stopped and looked up as the gate creaked open.
"Pads, you're early!" he exclaimed, picking up Harry and pulling Sirius into a quick hug. "What's up? Is Remus not with you?"
"Where's Lily?" Sirius asked, ignoring James and heading straight to the front door.
"She's inside, doing some research for Moody. Why?" James matched his pace, following him into the house with Harry in his arms.
"Peter's gone. His house wasn't warded and there was no sign of a struggle. I think he's the spy," Sirius answered quickly. "We need to go. Now. Lily!"
She appeared from the study as he called her, taking Harry into her arms with raised eyebrows.
"What's going on, love?"
"Peter's the spy, Pads says. We're leaving," James answered immediately.
Lily nodded and handed Harry back with a quick kiss to his head. "I'll get our bags packed. Where are we going?"
"My place," Sirius responded. "It was Alphard's before he died. It's warded against Dark magic, unplottable, the works. Even my parents couldn't find him there. I told Remus to meet us there and to add whatever protections he could think of in the meantime. No one will be able to leave, but we'll be safe."
Lily nodded again and ran upstairs to pack bags. James passed Harry on to Sirius and headed to the kitchen, grabbing various baby bottles and groceries, and shoving them into a grocery bag.
"Hey, Prongslet," Sirius cooed. "You wanna come stay with me for a bit?"
"Padda!" Harry shrieked in response, reaching out and pulling his godfather's hair.
Sirius conjured bubbles to entertain him while they waited, his heartrate slowing as he watched the boy giggle and play.
Lily appeared from the upper floor with a backpack, grabbing a few last minute things - including James's wand - as she came to stand next to Sirius.
As soon as James was ready, they stepped through the Floo one at a time; first James, then Lily with Harry, and finally Sirius, sealing the fireplace behind him.
The flat was warm as the stepped into he living room. The lamps lit and curtains closed, making it feel much later than it was. Remus was standing by the coffee table, having already directed James and Lily to the second bedroom to get set up.
His arms were warm when Sirius fell into them. He locked his arms around Remus's neck and breathed in the smell of him, freshly showered and safely home.
"You got my message?" Sirius whispered.
"As soon as I got home," Remus responded. "I contacted Dumbledore, let him know what happened and to expect an attack on Godric's Hollow. We'll be safe here, love. You kept us all safe."
Sirius relaxed into his arms as Remus gently ran his hands up his back. He tilted his head up slightly, Remus immediately obliging by leaning down for a chaste kiss.
"Welcome home, Moons. You okay to be stuck here with me for a while?"
Remus pulled him closer, hugging him tightly and speaking into his hair as Sirius buried his face in his neck.
"I'd stay here with you forever."

aka good crimes part two: plague edition
//
“Coffee?” Sirius to Lily, who looked barely human on the living room floor.
“Absolutely.”
“Decaf?”
“Shit-head.”
“How was the break through?” Sirius, putting the jug on, leaning against the kitchen cabinets.
“It wasn’t one. I just had to write a thousand words to figure that out.”
“Grim.” Sirius said, half listening.
“Undeniably. Good sleep?”
“Spent most of the night trying to find a weed dealer who delivers.”
“On Incognito I hope?”
“Obviously. MI-6 isn’t catching me.”
“Find anyone?”
“A few. Also an acid guy.”
“No acid.”
“Well, we’ll obviously do coffee first–“
“We are not dropping acid locked inside during a pandemic. We’ll kill each other.”
“I’m telling you,” Sirius, pulling out two cups, half clean, “maybe acid will give you the thesis break through–“
“Christ–“
“For your studies, Evans–“
“Stop trying to pitch me on acid before coffee.”
“After coffee?”
Lily groaned. Sirius stirred the coffees with a fork, looking at her expectantly.
She considered. “How good is the pitch?”
“There’s a Powerpoint.”
She sat up, “Really?”
“Okay, no, but listen,” Sirius, walking over with the overfull coffees, liquid slopping out, “Just drink this first.”
//
They both set lockdown goals. Lily wanted to write ten thousand words before it was over. Sirius wanted to learn to light a cigarette off their electric stove. When asked to pick another goal, Sirius said his second goal was to complete his first goal.

I've Just Seen A Face
Word Count: 1,469
James Potter is on his way to the Quidditch pitch, but when a gorgeous redhead decides to derail his path, he quickly realises he doesn't mind missing practice that much.
Just this once.
“Hey Evans! Is that a‒hey what are you doing?”
A warning flashed in Lily’s eyes, but James had no time to respond because he was suddenly dragged into a broom cupboard.
She closed the door and cast a silencing charm, and James didn’t waste another minute before speaking. “Who are we hiding from, hmm?”
Lily didn’t answer. She was determinedly not looking at him, head cocked as she tried to focus on the sounds on the other side.
James played along, peeping through the crack of the door, and after a long moment, he heard Lily sigh and looked to his right to see her lean on the wall. The room was tiny and there wasn't much distance between them, and her perfume was making him positively dizzy.
“So, are you going to introduce us or not?” he asked.
Lily looked between James and the toad she was holding. “This is Alistair,” she replied as she tried to suppress a smile, “Alistair, I don’t believe you’ve met James, have you?”

Tomorrow (marauders fic)
I had an urge to write an angsty marauders fic, so here it is.
Summary: Sirius visits the Potters while they're hiding from Voldemort and makes a promise to see them again tomorrow
Word count: 895
Not proof read, I literally started writing it before midnight
James Potter x Lily Potter, Sirius Black, Harry Potter, Remus Lupin (mentioned), Lord Voldemort (mentioned)
“He’s getting bigger every time I see him. It’s kinda scary. You won’t even have time to blink and he’ll be reaching his thirties and getting drunk on the weekends.”
Lily and James laughed, their eyes trained on the little boy in between them. Harry, because the attention was on him, was currently playing with his toys, paying no mind to Sirius’ burst of melancholy. He babbled something unintelligible that made the trio’s hearts swoon even more.
“How did we deserve you?” said James, nuzzling his nose into Harry’s puffy cheek. The boy giggled under the affection of his father, and his mother hugged him from his other side.
“You guys are the best people I know. You sure as hell deserved this.”
“Thank you, Sirius,” Lily smiled at him, squeezing Harry’s palm. James grinned in appreciation for his friend’s words. He was still very insecure in his new role as a father, still making mistakes, still not being the perfect dad he wanted to be, still haunted by his teenage years and some things he did that definitely didn’t make him look like a good person. He had changed since he was fifteen years old, he matured and put all grudges behind him, but it still tormented him, knowing what he was capable of even as a kid. Any word of comfort, any reassurance that he wasn’t that person, that he was in fact good, meant the world to him. He wanted nothing more than to create the best life for Lily and Harry.
“You seem really happy,” Sirius noted, looking at the Potters engaging in Harry’s play. “Even with all this shit happening outside.”
“Language, Sirius,” Lily scolded him, but her lips curled slightly, making her less threatening than she wished to appear. “Well, it’s not the perfect scenario, but we’re trying. We want Harry to have the best childhood, and how much better can it be than having both parents at home all the time.”
Sirius’s eyes bored into his hands, not being able to hold Lily’s gaze. It hurt him that he couldn’t do anything to relieve their pain, their fear, anything to change the prophecy or to keep Voldemort away. He did everything in his power, with other members of the Order, but it wasn’t enough. Becoming their Secret Keeper and hiding wasn’t enough. And he couldn’t stand it. He couldn’t stand being so helpless.
“Sirius, it’s okay, really,” Lily chimed in, seeing Sirius’s change in demeanor, “It’s not your fault. We’re scared, of course, but we won’t let it rule our lives. We’re still here, right? That has to mean something.”
Sirius met her eyes, only then noticing how teary his own became, “I’m just so scared for you guys. I wish I could do something.”
“You can’t, Pads,” James smiled sadly, “And that’s okay. You’re doing more than we could’ve asked for, risking your life for us.”
“Are you kidding me? I would jump into the fire for you all.”
“It’s a kind gesture, but I don’t think it will be necessary,” James chuckled, “Seriously, it’s okay. We won’t let him win, right? Our guys are succeeding with each day, it will be over soon. And until then, we’ll stay here. We’ll be alright.”
Sirius nodded, although he wasn’t really convinced. He wouldn’t admit it, though, so he forced a smile, and centered his attention back on Harry, who was now trying to match shapes into their cut-outs.
“You’re doing so well, little guy,” he ruffled his curly, unruly hair, something he was still doing with James. He stayed at the Potters playing with Harry, drinking tea, and reminiscing about the past with his best friends until the evening when he had to go back into his hiding place.
“Remember about tomorrow!” James shouted over Harry’s small head leaning on his shoulder, while Sirius was putting on his coat.
“How could I forget Halloween at the Potters?” he responded teasingly, “It’s like a national holiday.”
“I’m so ready to see your costume,” Lily added, leaning on James’s other shoulder, “Just please, don’t dress up as David Bowie again.”
“No, that’ll be Moony,” Sirius smiled, one of his hands on the doorknob. He looked at his friends, so young, yet so tired with everything that dawned on them. And they were still so happy, like there wasn’t a war happening outside their doorstep. They were in their little bubble of happiness, and Sirius felt as if he might cry. They deserved that kind of love they had for each other and their son the most. Sirius really meant it: he had never met people with kindest hearts that their own. They deserved the world, and yet they had almost everything taken away from them. And they were still happy.
Sirius took a mental picture of this moment, of Lily and James holding their son, smothering him with their love, a perfect image of a perfect family. He wanted it to last forever, because he didn’t know how many forevers they had left.
“Okay, I have to go now. Bye, little menace,” Sirius said, waving at Harry.
“Bye, uncle Pads,” James responded, waving back to Sirius with Harry’s little hand, “See you tomorrow.”
“Yeah… tomorrow.”
He stepped outside and apparated to his hideout, glancing at the Potters’ house one last time.
It is safe to say that tomorrow never came.

I'm so sorry

James couldn’t read very well, he never could. The letters always shifted around, jumbling up and proving it very difficult to read. The only person he had ever confided this information in had been Sirius, but Sirius had been no help, seeing as Sirius also was severely dyslexic, but Sirius had Remus to read to him. That felt almost too far from platonic for the two for James to ask Remus to do the same for him, and it outright embarrassed him too much to ask Peter.
When him and Lily began talking without the two of them butting heads (more so Lily doing the ‘butting heads’ than James, for James was always so openly head over heels for the woman), he made a very strict attempt at hiding his disadvantage, and this secrecy only worsened when the two began talking to Regulus, ever the bookish one. James hated the idea of the two discovering he couldn’t read, afraid either of them would think of him as stupid. Lily was so smart, and practically a goddess at potions. Regulus had read almost every book imaginable, each page filled to the brim with scribbled ink annotations, handwriting neat but also too sloppy for James to read whenever he caught a glance of the books Regulus would read (Sirius’ hand writing was completely illegible to James. Sirius’ handwriting appeared like a four year old had taken a writing etiquette class, and missed half of the lectures. Remus and Peter both had rather neat hand writing, and it was easier to discern. Usually, Regulus wrote in cursive, and it was practically impossible for James to understand, and Lily’s handwriting was neat and precise; James could read hers better than any of his friends’).
James was pretty good at hiding this, up until James made the foolish agreement to study with Regulus and Lily. They hid away in the Room of Requirement for privacy and to avoid annoying interruption, curling up together on a large sofa as each one studied their own things.
James, on the other hand, just kind of sat there awkwardly. James was more of a hands on kind of person, studying by replicating and practicing rather than reading and memorizing. He definitely wouldn’t sacrifice being sandwiched between the loves of his life just to stand and practice some nonverbal spell work though, so he pretended to be interested in his copy of his Charms book.
“James you haven’t flipped the page in fifteen minutes,” Regulus suddenly said, and both Lily and Regulus’ eyes locked onto James. James blinked a couple times, trying to make an excuse. “We didn’t have to study if you didn’t want to,” Regulus said, closing the book that he previously held.
“Well you need to study, James, you’re taking N.E.W.T. courses,” Lily said with a certain accusatory tone, and Regulus glanced at the book. Now that he focused on it for long enough, book itself seemed entirely untouched, even by others’ standards of untouched. The pages looked completely unbent and clean, and after a moment, Regulus realized that James had his book open to about six units behind what Lily had hers open to.
“You’re not even on the right unit,” Regulus added, and James stared down at his book before glancing at Regulus.
“Review,” James managed, severely unable to lie to the younger. Regulus saw through it instantly, raising his brows.
“Sure. Whats wrong?” Regulus asked, picking up on the almost frightened expression plaguing James’ face currently. James swallowed.
“I can’t read very well,” James said quickly, as if trying to say it so fast neither of them would catch it; they both did.
“It can’t be as bad as Sirius,” Regulus said complacently, waving his hand dismissively. “He always said the letters were moving and dumb stuff like that.” James was going to cry.
“They do.” Regulus paused as he realized his lapse in judgement, glancing at James. Okay, so James and Sirius both had the same issue. Regulus could save this.
“Our cousin Andromeda, before she decided to go off with a Muggleborn, helped Sirius fashion a reading spell that would read to him. I’m sure Sirius would tell you if you asked,” Regulus insisted, not fully understanding that his attempt wasn’t helping at all. James wanted to merge and become one with the sofa below them, solely so he wouldn’t have to see the look of uncertainty in his lovers’ eyes as they stared at him.
“Or,” Lily began, letting her fingers card into James’ hair, “we could read to you whenever it was needed? Would that help?” James flushed a slight pink, relaxing into Lily’s touch anyways.
“That’s embarrassing…”
“I don’t find it embarrassing,” Regulus said, inching closer to James to supply the latter with more comfort. “And neither of us would mind.” James swallowed slightly.
“That…that’d be nice, then,” James mumbled. Lily gave a smile, continuing to play her hand through James’ hair. “You guys…don’t think I’m dumb?”
“Of course not,” Lily said as if it was obvious, almost sounding offended at the prospect. “You can’t control being dyslexic, Jamie, it certainly doesn’t make you stupid.”
“But Reg said-”
“I think Sirius is the epitome of idiotic to begin with, so anything that he does is stupid. Your guys’ issue isn’t stupid, Sirius just is.” Despite Regulus just insulting one of James’ best friends, James laughed at it anyway.
“Okay then.”
“I’ve got a genuine question. If you can’t read, and I’m assuming you just don’t read for class, how the fuck have you been passing everything?” Regulus suddenly asked after a moment, blinking at James. James gave a smile.
“Remus, we copy off him all the time,” James confessed, and Lily scoffed a laugh.
“Of course you do.”
“He lets us!” James defended. “We let him copy us in potions, so it’s even.”
“Mhm,” Lily hummed teasingly, still playing with James’ hair. James couldn’t think of another comeback, so he just simply relaxed into Lily again, closing his eyes.
“We still have to study.”
“For Merlin’s sake, Reg.”

OMG I HAVE AN IDEA
What about the kids (mid Hogwarts) in like 3rd or younger (2nd?) Year and they invite hermione and ron and the Weasley family for Christmas and it's amazing and we see draco getting along w them 😭😭😭 and Hermione is the 'mom' friend so she loves hanging out w the other blacks and potters? and we see how nice harry and draco's friends are and it's just a heartfelt moment 😭😭😭
I'm a whore for Christmas and also fluff so YES HERE YOU GO I don’t even know if this is any good so I apologize if this isn’t really what you were looking for. I realize now there isn’t much interaction between the golden trio + Draco but this is my take on it 🫶 CBBH Holiday Special - Weasley, Potter, Black families
CW: mentions of past (parental) abuse
What's One More?
You and Sirius were pretty chill parents – at least you liked to think so. You never really spoke to your children like they were children, but rather like little people who had important thoughts and ideas. You let them express themselves creatively, which sometimes led to paint and marker prints lining the walls, or photo albums being plundered and cut up to create scrap books, or even the odd redesign of an old family heirloom portrait in the hall.
None of that wasn’t anything that couldn’t be fixed with a little magic.
What you guys could not budge on?
Christmas at home with the family.
This was why when Draco sent a letter home during his 3rd year suggesting he may stay at Hogwarts for the holidays, Sirius thought your head might actually combust.
“What on earth is he thinking? He’s never spent a holiday away from us – why wouldn’t he want to come home?” You were yelling at Sirius as if it was him who suggested Draco stay at Hogwarts this Christmas.
“I’m not sure love, maybe there’s a reason.” He tried to reason with you. He should have tried to keep his mouth shut.
“There is no reason good enough to break his mother’s heart.” You pouted, sounding disturbingly close to tears.
And you all called Sirius the dramatic one.
“I’ll talk to him.” Sirius promised with a placating kiss to your temple.
So, Sirius sent him an owl basically along the lines of “hey mate, you’re tearing your mother apart here. It’d be sort of shady of me to let another guy break my girl’s heart so what the hell?”, to which Draco replied, basically speaking straight to Sirius’ soul.
“I’m sorry, dad, it’s just that Theo doesn’t really want to go home this winter, and I don’t want him to be alone for the holidays.”
My stupid lovely caring son, who raised him? Sirius wondered to himself. The answer was obvious. It was you.
Theodore Nott, son of Thoros Nott and the late Camelia Nott nee Rosier. His mother died under suspicious circumstances (which Sirius felt translated directly to “shitty ass husband”) when the boy was four, and Thoros Nott was able to avoid prosecution for his roles in the Wizarding War by offering intel on other prominent Death Eaters.
Azkaban or not, the man was an ass. Rumoured to have killed his own wife, Sirius couldn’t imagine he was much nicer to his only son.
The heir.
Sirius felt sick...it was nearly painful how much he could relate to poor Theodore Nott.
“Did you find out why your son hates us?” You asked Sirius a few days later. You were obviously teasing, but Sirius didn’t miss the genuine concern in your voice.
“Yes, and actually, the reasoning for his absence this holiday is a direct result of him being your child.”
You placed the mug you’d been holding a little too roughly onto the table as you leveled a look at Sirius. “What are you on about?”
“He doesn’t want to leave his friend behind.” Sirius smiled kindly at you. He watched the contempt drain from your face.
“The sod!”
Sirius barked a surprised laugh. “What!?”
“That’s such an easy fix!” you exclaimed like everyone around you was sort of stupid (they kind of were). “His friend can come here! We’re already hosting the Weasley’s; Lily told Harry to invite Hermione too. What’s one more?”
What’s one more, indeed.
So that’s how Sirius, James, Lily, you, Arthur & Molly Weasley ended up on platform 9 ¾ to retrieve exactly eleven (11) children while Bill and Charlie waited back at the house with Remus, Regulus and the youngest four of the Potter/Black children.
“Hermione, I hope your parents weren’t too disappointed we stole you away for the holidays. They already have to part with you for ten months of the year.” You said as you served Lyra a portion of roast potato’s before passing the dish to your left.
“They were a little sad, but they said they understood my excitement at getting the chance to spend more time with wizarding families.” The fourteen-year-old stated matter-of-factly.
“Well, perhaps the next time they’d like to join you. The more the merrier.” James interjected.
“You sure about that Prongsie? This table can’t take much more transfiguring to make it any longer!” Remus called dramatically from the opposite end of the table, as if they were in completely different rooms.
“Bugger the table!” James called back just as dramatically, “we’ll just get a new one!”
Sirius didn’t miss the nervous glance Theo shot towards Draco. Sirius remembered how nervous James’ boisterous behaviour with his parents made him – concerned that a lashing or crucio was just around the corner.
“Don’t mind them, Theo,” you offered quietly to the boy. Sirius took a moment to marvel the fact that you’d noticed too, and your mama-bear protection came out at the perfect time. “They’re idiots with zero volume control.”
“I HAVE PERFECT VOLUME CONTROL, VIX.” James screamed, causing the younger kids to squeal in laughter and bring their hands up to cover their ears. Hermione, Ron, and the rest of the Weasley’s all chuckled at the outburst as well – accustomed to James’ brand of goofiness.
“You get used to it, trust me.” Sirius offered quietly with a wink. Theo smiled gratefully at the two of you and seemed to relax somewhat in his chair.
“I agree that the production needs to be tightly structured and coordinated Percy, but it also has to be fun or you’re going to lose your actors.” Hermione could be heard arguing with the older boy from down the hall.
"I cannot work under these conditions." Percy could be heard responding.
“You’d think this was a Broadway production of Sweeny Todd.” Lily muttered quietly to Sirius sat beside her.
“What’s a Sweeny Todd?” Sirius muttered back.
“What’s a Broadway?” James muttered from her other side.
“Purebloods.” Remus muttered from across the room with an eyeroll.
The kids wanted to make their own play for the adults - it was mostly the youngest ones, though Fred & George never could help themselves but partake in any potential mischief, Hermione was very excited to help direct the production, and Percy never could leave very much alone. The second Hermione was involved, Harry and Ron shoved their noses into it too, while Draco and Theo sat in the audience with the adults and far too many stuffed animals.
“I mean, were the teddy bears really necessary? There’s already a theatre worth of people here.” Theo commented what he thought was quietly to Draco, but he had one werewolf and four animagi with animal-like hearing, as well as Molly & Lily with tried and true mother-hearing in the room, so his comment was met with a round of laughter.
“Oh my gods, Draco, can we keep him?” Remus commented as he pretended to wipe a tear from under his eye.
Pink dusted the tops of Theo’s cheek bones, but he offered the room a shy smile.
Sirius thought it was like looking in a mirror: he imagined this is what Effie and Fleamont saw when Sirius spent holidays in this very home some nearly twenty years ago. A boy who was likely fun and eccentric around his friends where he felt safe, but reverting to the proper pureblood heir you were beaten into becoming around adults.
Sirius sort of hated it.
As the little kids and the rest of the production made their way to the room, Sirius noticed James’ eyes on him. James offered him a kind smile that brought tears to his eyes, almost as if he was saying ‘I know, right?’
By the end of the holiday, the adults had almost managed to get Theo to shed his aristocratic persona with them.
“And how’s Minnie? Are you guys being nice to her? Make sure to set up some good pranks this year; gotta keep the old gal on her toes, it’s good for her health.” James said to the Hogwarts students solemnly at breakfast.
“You did not just call Minnie an ‘old gal’, Prongs.” Remus chided from his place at the table.
“You both did not just refer to Professor McGonagall as Minnie.” Regulus added incredulously.
“That’s her name, Reggie.” James answered no nonsense. “We earned that right when we graduated.”
“No, we earned that right when we graduated.” Lily corrected as she motioned to herself, you, and Regulus. “You lot should still be in detention for the crap you pulled.”
Remus, James, and Sirius all adorned their faces with a blissful sort of reverence as they thought back to their school days.
“We were awesome.” James said dreamily.
“You were awful.” You corrected.
“You’re our hero’s.” The Twins added in unison.
“What in Godric’s name are you doing to them, Hermione?” Ron asked through a large serving of sausage in his mouth.
Hermione, who was replacing small pompom’s into two kitchen whisks to hand back to three-year-old Stella and Leo, didn’t even spare Ron a glance as she answered sharply, “It’s good for their fine motor skills, Ronald.”
“Wha’s a fine motor skill?” He asked incredulously, somehow still with food in his mouth.
“Oh, read a book, Ronald.” Hermione huffed before her face turned sickly sweet as she cooed at Stella. “Good job, Stell!”
“Blimey.” Ron muttered as he turned to Harry.
“I can’t believe you’re all going to be leaving us again so soon!” Molly said tearfully as she looked around the room. “I like our having our table so full- FRED WEASLEY YOU GET THAT FURNITURE OFF THE CEILING THIS ISNTANT.”
“I’m George, mum.” The twin said from his chair suspended on the ceiling. Sirius had to give him credit for looking as casual as he did whilst all the blood in his body was no doubt making its way to his head.
“I DON’T CARE WHO YOU ARE, YOU’LL BE GROUNDED IF YOU’RE NOT DOWN IN THE NEXT 30 SECONDS.”
At the beginning of the week – the shouting, the threats, the energy, and the talking back that George (or Fred, Sirius still wasn’t entirely sure) just displayed would have had Theo pale in the face. Today, he just looked around the room quickly to ensure everyone else was in good spirits before joining in on the laughter.
Back on platform 9 ¾, you and Sirius decided to pull Draco aside.
“Hey love, listen. I don’t want to embarrass Theo, but would you let him know we really enjoyed his company over the holiday, and he is welcome at the Manor anytime.” You spoke softly to your son.
“We mean it, Draco. The Potter Manor has, and always will be, a safe place for people to run to. If he needs somewhere better, somewhere safer to go, he’s more than welcome to come live with us.” Sirius added earnestly.
Draco looked like he might cry before he threw himself into his parents’ arms, causing each of them to let out a surprised ‘oof’.
“I love you guys. I’m so lucky to have you – we all are.” Draco said, though his words were muffled from his place in the crook of Sirius’ arm.
“We’re the lucky ones, Draco.” You insisted as you stamped a kiss to his head.
The parents and youngest kids stood on the platform and waved as they watched the train disappear.
“It’s so odd.” James commented quietly.
“What is?” Sirius asked.
“How life works.”
Sirius looked at his mate who was still watching after the long-gone train hoping he would clarify. When it became obvious that he wouldn’t, Sirius elbowed him.
“How’s that?”
James finally turned to Sirius and offered him a smile that seemed to portray a mixture of grief, pride, and love.
“Draco is Theo’s James.”
Sirius watched as you dried your face and went about applying your skincare.
“I can hear your mind turning from here, babe. What’re you thinking about?” You finally said, causing Sirius to look at your reflection only to find your eyes already on him.
“You’re sure you are okay? If Theo needs to move in with us, I mean.” Sirius asks.
Your movements paused as your eyebrows migrated to meet in the middle – bemusement painting your features.
“Why wouldn’t I be okay?”
“We sort of decided we weren’t going to have any more kids.” Sirius explained. You snorted in response as your turned to face him, leaning back against the bathroom counter.
“Sirius, as long as I don’t have to push anymore out, you can have as many kids as you want.”
Sirius smiled immediately at you. “You sure we don’t already have enough?” He asked
Your smile grew to match his. “What’s one more?”

Trust
Written for @jilymicrofics prompt April 17th/19th - Order + Fix
One of James's best qualities was his loyalty, Lily thought. He was endlessly trusting, loyal to each of his friends, regardless of their past actions or current faults. It was beautiful, the way he saw nothing but the best in them and trusted them with his life.
It was also dangerous. They were caught up in a war, surrounded by betrayal and darkness. No one was perfect, and trusting too much was a mistake.
For this reason, she asked him if she could pick the secret keeper. He trusted her easily and agreed. He would have picked Sirius, his best friend and brother, but Sirius wouldn't be able to handle the pressure. He was already losing trust in Remus, growing more paranoid by the hour, and the Order needed him to stay on his reckless missions. He wasn't a good choice.
Ordinarily, her first choice would be Remus himself, but he was planning on leaving the Order soon, tired of lying to Sirius and being used as Dumbledore's pet werewolf. He was planning to stay at home with their cat doing research and hoping to convince Sirius to be there with him.
Peter would then be James's go to, but Lily had never liked him. There was something about him, something twitchy and easily swayed that she didn't like. She couldn't go into hiding knowing the only thing protecting her family was a man who jumped at every shadow and whispered his doubts after meetings.
All of this brought her back to where it all started: Hogwarts. There was a single person she knew she could trust to not only protect her family, but to protect her friends.
Minerva McGonagall wasn't surprised to see her, nor was she phased by the request. She agreed to be their secret keeper over ginger biscuits and tea, and further agreed to look out for Sirius and Remus while James and Lily couldn't.
They cast the spell the next day, sending letters of farewell to their closest friends with wishes that they would be reunited soon. The Potter house went into total lockdown. James spent his days with Harry, teaching him everything he could about anything he could think of, and Lily spent her days studying potions and healing spells. At night, they slept easily, knowing they were safe from harm until the war was over.
