If the face fits
Jily meet cute! ....well, this might be a meet ugly, but it's all I can think of. Based on a video I saw a while back, and I'll try to post it if I find it again. NSFW below the cut.
Lily hates the first day at a new gym.
Trying out a new gym is always a bit uncomfortable. There are rules and expectations that are common across every gym, of course, but each one has its own culture that you really can’t know until you walk in the door. What is the flow around the equipment? What is the acceptable time on a machine? Where is the best vantage point to check out the gym hotties?
Lily despises walking in without knowing what to expect, but she and Mary moved to this city a month ago, and running outside is only going to get her by for so long. She needs some actual gym equipment. So, she’s braving gym visits.
This one, Marauders Fitness (“We solemnly swear to get you swole!”) caught her eye. It’s run by four guys, each of whom are sexy in that sweaty-abs-on-display sort of way, if you’re someone who is into that sort of thing. (Lily… Lily was into that sort of thing). They offered a three-day visit pass, and this is Lily’s first day.
She is already feeling the distinct exhaustion in her underused muscle, knowing that she’ll be deliciously sore tomorrow. All she needs is to lift some weights, and she’ll be done.
She pulls out her phone to text Mary, who is stuck at work, as she sits down on the weight bench. Only, she doesn’t actually sit on the bench.
Lily turns to look and jumps up again, just in time to see a guy with messy hair sit up from where he had laid down on the bench. “Oh, oh my god. I’m so–”
She turns and runs. There’s really no other solution now, right? As much as she liked this gym, she can never, ever return. She honestly debates leaving her bag in the locker room, until she realizes her keys are in there, and she doubles back for it.
“Hey, wait a minute!”
She turns to see Mr. Messy Hair coming after her, jogging to catch up. “Nope, sorry. I have, um, an urgent appointment somewhere else. Across town. I have to go.”
“You can’t go yet,” he says, walking beside her as she continues toward the locker room.
“Yes, I can. Can’t be helped, must go.” She tries to walk a little faster, but this guy is tall and his long legs take big strides.
“Well, before you run out, at least give me your name and number.” He looks down at her with a smirk, and she pretends it doesn’t make her stomach swoop. “You wouldn’t just sit on my face and run, would you?”
Lily groans. “You did not just use that line.”
He laughs, and it’s such a full, happy sound. “It’s terrible, I know, but you can’t blame me. It’s like a once in a lifetime kind of a line.”
“Listen, about that, I’m really sorry–”
“NOPE!” He smiles as he cuts her off. “You don’t get to apologize for that. I think we were both a little at fault for that one, so if you apologize, I’m going to have to apologize, then you’ll think you have to apologize, and we’ll be stuck in a playback loop.”
Lily scoffs. “Maybe, but only one of us sat on the other’s face.”
“You’re really going to make me say it, aren’t you?” He crosses his arms over his chest, a playful tug to his lips.
“Say what?”
He leans in, like he’s sharing a secret. “I really didn’t mind it that much.”
Lily feels herself flush. “I really have to go.”
“No, come on. You didn’t even finish your workout!” He gestures back at the gym. “Why don’t you finish? I can help if you want.”
She narrows her eyes at him. “Was that another double entendre?”
His eyes go wide. “No. I mean, not intentionally. I just meant–” He sighs. “At least tell me you’ll come back?”
Lily laughs, and there’s a hysterical note to it. “No, absolutely not.”
“What if I throw in free personal trainer services?”
She glares at him. “Do these services involve you laying on my weight bench?”
“No, I promise.” He waves over her shoulder. “I’ll even set it up with Sirius so you don’t have to deal with me.”
She looks over her shoulder at three guys who are still standing by The Weight Bench (an incident like that deserves a Proper Title), grinning like they enjoy watching this train wreck. One of them–Sirius, presumably–waves back.
It’s only then that the realization lands hard in her stomach. She’s seen this guy before. All of them. “Oh my god. You’re the owner?” She walks past him, a bit in a daze. “I just sat on the gym owner’s face.”
“It was a new experience for me, too.” He follows her as she walks back toward the locker room. “I’m James, by the way.”
“Lily,” she says, but she’s hardly paying attention.
“Are you still going to leave, Lily?”
A hysterical bubble of laughter pops out. “I should. I should move all the way back to my parents’ house and climb under my Barbie blanket and just give up.”
“You could,” James says. “Or there’s another option and–I might be a bit biased, but I think it’s a better option.”
“What’s that?” she asks, turning to face him.
“Go on a date with me?” He’s really very cute when he smiles, glasses a little lopsided (that might be her fault) and a crooked grin. He holds his hands up in surrender. “Face sitting optional.”
Lily laughs. She can’t help it; it’s just the most ridiculous thing to ever happen in her life. She holds up a finger. “One condition.”
“Anything,” he says.
“Please stop mentioning face sitting.”

JILY WEEK DAY 5: MEET CUTE
As you can see, I'm really trying to post something once a day for @thegobletofweasleys' Jily Week. I whipped this one up whilst on a plane today. And yes, there's some thematic similarities to london is lonely...
Here I present... Presumptuous.
"This time around, it made me unexpectedly sad and then…"
Lily flipped the page of her recently checked out library book only to discover a in-flight drink napkin.
Weird, how’d that gotten in there?
Lily pulled the napkin from between the seams and set it down on her tray table, where it ought to have remained.  Except, it wasn’t an in-flight drink napkin for American Airlines (the airline she was currently flying), but rather an in-flight drink napkin for United Airlines (an airline Lily actively avoided flying).  And on said in-flight drink napkin, in much nicer writing than Lily could ever hope to produce herself, was a brief note.
Emma,
This might be incredibly presumptuous, but I thought we had some great conversation earlier and would love to continue it when we’re both back in LA.  Here’s my number 310-555-7845.
-James
Lily quietly gasped.  She didn’t think this sort of thing happened anymore.  Obviously, the note wasn’t for her, but all the same it was rather exciting.  She wondered what had happened.  Had Emma ever contacted James?  Or had James misinterpreted the whole thing and Emma simply shoved it into her library book never to be seen again (well, until Lily checked out the same book)?  The possibilities were endless and Lily so desperately wanted to know.  Maybe she knew this James.  Or maybe she knew Emma.  Or had a friend of a friend.  Was it worth buying the in-flight wifi just to check social media?  James had left his phone number, there were probably ways to track him down, right?
As it turns out, it is actually very difficult to find someone online with just their phone number.  Googling was absolutely no help, nor was Instagram.  Lily didn’t even bother with Facebook.  She did, however, send a few texts to her LA born-and-raised friends to see if they recognized the number (perhaps they had gone to elementary school with this James fellow).
No one had.
Any normal person at this point would have appreciated the surreal connection that library books can bring to strangers and move on.
Not Lily.
As the plane bumped along the runway, Lily began to compose a text.
Lily Evans: This text is incredibly presumptuous, seeing as I am not Emma, but I just found this in my library book and just wanted to say how incredibly romantic I thought it was.  Wishing you and Emma all the best ! xx Lily
Lily Evans: *Photo of James’ in-flight napkin note*
James Potter: hello library book comrade lily!  how are you enjoying romantic comedy by curtis sittenfeld, by the way?  were you as annoyed as I was that she thought danny was gen-z, when he is clearly a millenial??? just me??? I am however sorry to report that not only are emma and I not living happily ever after, but I actually never plucked up the courage to pass the note.
Lily Evans: Oh noooooo !  I guess romance is really and truly dead then.  No, that thing about Danny annoyed me too, I’m still only half-way through, so no spoilers yet!
James Potter: wow, if i’d known the stakes I would have passed the napkin.  as for spoilers, my lips are sealed. but please let me know when you’ve finished, would love to hear your thoughts :)

For @thegobletofweasleys Jily week!! August 4th - meet cute AU
Tumblr media
Lily Evans’ plan was to survive her sister’s destination wedding and rush back to her busy life in London, but a slight lapse in judgement and a chance encounter with a bloke who planned to escape his own London life might change everything.
Lily stared at the large expanse of water in despair. The waves were lightly tickling her ankles and under other circumstances she would have enjoyed the peaceful silence of the early morning, but now she was too busy scanning the crystalline waters for a glimpse of dark velvet to appreciate it. But she thought it was understandable when her life depended on it, because if her sister ever found out that she’d lost her wedding rings she would kill her.

Tears burned in Lily’s eyes and choked sobs rattled in her throat. She paced the narrow shoulder of the four-lane motorway and kicked at the innocent grass. Her mind was whirling with stinging swearwords while in her heart the gut-twisting anger warred with the stranglehold of loss and grief. Her suitcase sat neatly near her feet while Lily walked a tight circle, stuck in the torrent of emotion.
Stuck here, on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, with nothing in sight but trees, grass, and the cars and lorries hurrying past. With nothing but her dark thoughts and hurt feelings to keep her company.
Lily’s breath stuttered in her throat as the enormity of her predicament crashed down on her and the tears finally tore free, rolling down her cheeks.
*
It hadn’t even been two hours and James was already bored. Even the guitar riffs of the classic rock playlist blasting in his car didn’t quite pump him up anymore. His restless fingers drummed at the steering wheel and he shifted in his seat. Maybe he should have stopped in Glasgow, after all. Taken a break. Stretched his legs. Got himself a big cup of coffee.
There was nothing in front of him now but hours and hours of driving south along the motorway stretching before him. There wouldn’t even be any big cities on the way for the next hundred miles or two. The mere thought of all the miles still ahead of him was enough to make him lose his bloody mind. How was he going to be able to keep himself occupied for so many hours on end?
He’d ring Sirius but that blighter was probably already on his way to Greece right now. Off to his stupid romantic holiday with his stupid boyfriend. Blowing off a road trip with his best mate like the right sod he was.
The long trip back home from uni was a complete snooze fest now that he was forced to drive through the day alone.
Although it took the whole day to drive to James’ parents’ place, back in June when they had gone back for the summer holidays the miles had flown by. They’d taken turns driving. Taken breaks in some of the towns and rest stops along the way. And all the while, the car had been filled with talk and laughter. Not James’ lonely playlist and frustrated sighs.
Maybe it was time to play a game. It wouldn’t be much fun by himself, but if it was a choice between a boring road trip game and the general boring everything, he’d rather pick the option that wouldn’t slowly turn his brain into mush.
“I spy with my little eye…” James muttered under his breath.
His gaze swept the scenery before him. There was the grey, endless road. Grass. The railing between the lanes. Trees lining the road. Cars of all makes, models and colours, interspersed with lorries.
Ah! Now there was something to break the monotony. An overhead bridge. That perked James up briefly, but as soon as he drove under it, the boredom started to creep back in.
More of the stretching road, more cars, more trees, and more inertia eating his brain until all that would remain was mush.
Hold on, what was that?
James switched lanes.
A person standing by the side of the road? In the middle of nowhere?
That was unboring. James started to slow down.
Their arm was outstretched. His parents had always warned him against hitchhikers — though James wasn’t sure why since he couldn’t even remember the last time he’d seen one — but any company would do right now.
Slowly, James pulled to a stop by the side of the road.
As he turned to look at the red-haired woman through the passenger-side window, a jolt of recognition jittered down his spine.
He knew that face. It was red and splotchy right now, but he knew he’d seen it, more than once. He just couldn’t place it, didn’t know who she was.
The woman hesitated for a moment longer. Then, she reached out and opened the door.
"Hi," she said and sniffed.
"Hi," James replied, offering her a smile he hoped was reassuring. "Need a lift?"
"Yes, please."
"Hop on in."
The woman picked up her suitcase and hoisted it into the backseat before climbing into the passenger seat next to James.
"Where are you headed?" James asked as he steered back into the traffic.
"Just drop me off at the nearest town with a train station."
James slanted her a quick glance. She was looking out of the window, turned away from him. Disappointment pressed tight around his throat.
"Ok, just tell me where. Don't have the railway map in my head."
"I'll have to look that up, too," she admitted. "Give me a moment."
While she fumbled with her phone, James turned down his music. Drummed his fingers against the steering wheel. Second-guessed himself at least four times.
Then, finally, he couldn't hold back the words anymore.
"It's too bad, though. I really could have used the company."
She looked up from her phone and frowned at him.
Great, now he'd probably come across as some kind of a creep.
"Just, it's a long drive home for me and in the previous years we've made a whole road trip out of it with my friend but this time it's just me and at this rate, I'm pretty sure the boredom will rot my brain before I reach Manchester."
"You're driving all the way to Manchester?" she asked, sounding surprised.
"No, I'm driving all the way to Devon."
She blinked. Stared at him. Slowly tilted her head.
"Are you crazy?"
"Yes," James readily replied. "But not the homicidal kind. I promise."
That startled a laugh out of her.
And that piece that had been puzzling and nagging at him at the back of his mind clicked into place. The red hair. The bright eyes. That easily recognisable voice. The laugh.
“You’re Lily, right? Remus Lupin’s friend?”
Her eyebrows rose sharply in surprise.
"Yeah. We have a lot of classes together. Are you a friend of Remus, too?"
"Yeah. I'm best mates with Remus' boyfriend. He also happens to be my flatmate so I see Remus around. A lot."
A smile tugged at Lily’s lips. "I can only imagine."
"I'm James, by the way. James Potter. I don’t think we've ever officially met though I've seen you around the campus."
"Nice to meet you, James. Officially." Her voice was warm and light with her smile.
Hearing it lifted his heart and made him smile at the road in front of them.
"Likewise. And it's nice to have someone to talk with. The time's already flying by," James told her.
"Well, I guess keeping your brain rot away is the least I can do," Lily quipped.
"That would be much appreciated," he said. "I also really appreciate this opportunity of playing a knight in shining armour. It’s doing good things for my ego."
"Nurturing male egos is the primary focus of any woman’s life," Lily spoke in a wry tone.
James burst into laughter.
"I can see why you're friends with Remus," he said
"Yeah, we have a similar sense of humour." Lily shrugged.
"You have a brilliant sense of humour," James replied.
"Thanks."
For a moment, a silence settled over them. Then, Lily asked: "So what's in Devon?"
And so the conversation took root again. They talked about their plans for the autumn break, about their studies, about university life. They complained about their assignments and exams. They shared anecdotes of their professors and classes and the antics of their friends. They confessed where all their favourite spots on the campus were.
They chatted so easily with one another that before either of them realised it, more than an hour had passed.
It wasn’t until James saw the signpost of Gretna Green that he jolted back to reality.
“Should we stop at Gretna Green?” he asked Lily, his genial mood starting to deflate.
He could feel the weight of Lily’s long stare.
“What for, an obliging blacksmith? You seem like a nice enough guy, James, but I’d like to get to know you a bit better before we put marriage on the table.”
James’ surprise burst out in a wild guffaw.
“You’re getting ahead of yourself, Lily,” he told her, trying to match her joking tone. “I’m the grand gestures type. When the marriage is on the table, you’ll know.”
He shot her a glance and winked, before turning his attention back to the road. “What I was actually after was, I’m pretty sure Gretna fits your definition of the nearest town with a train station. If I drop you off there, I’m sure you can get a train or a coach to take you home.”
While Lily stayed silent, James held his breath.
“I don’t want to be a bother,” she said slowly, after a long moment, “but if you’re really driving all the way to Devon, it wouldn’t be a huge detour to swing by Derby, would it?”
“Not at all, it’s practically on the way,” James said, perking up and breathing easy once again.
“I’m just concerned about the state of your brain,” she continued, deadpan. “We should keep it as rot-free as possible.”
“Definitely.” James nodded. “And seriously, I would appreciate the company.”
“Well then, looks like you’re stuck with me for a while longer.”
James grinned. And though he’d only just met her, he was starting to think that he wouldn’t mind being stuck with her for the rest of his life.
*
Lily was laughing so hard her cheeks were hurting. She wasn’t sure she’d stopped laughing since they’d crossed over to Lancashire. How strange it was that in the span of only two odd hours, her mood had taken such a complete and abrupt turn, from the bleakest, darkest pit into bright, boundless joy.
Really, it was all thanks to James. James, who was funny and nice and sweet and friendly and more than easy on the eyes.
And maybe a little crazy, yes, but definitely in a good way.
It was weird that their paths hadn’t crossed much on campus before. Sure, the campus was big and they studied in different faculties and had no classes in common. But Lily didn’t shy away from parties or pub quizzes or any of the varied events peppering the social calendar of student life. So they well could have—should have—met before today. Especially given the Remus-Sirius connection. James probably spent more time in the social scene of the campus than in class, too, Lily mused. Judging by their short acquaintance, James seemed even more outgoing than she was. After all, he’d been starved enough for company to pick up a stranger from the side of the road.
Which had been fortunate for her and very decent of him. A smile playing on her lips, Lily slanted a glance at James, wondering. Really, he was a decent bloke.
That thought combined with her returned good humour and the congenial mood in the car—as well as all the many miles still ahead of them—spurred her to speak before her brain had fully caught up with her tongue.
“Aren’t you going to ask?”
His eyebrows shot up. “Ask what?”
“How I ended up hitchhiking by the side of the road.”
James kept his eyes on the road and his voice even. “I figured you’d have a good reason for that and I didn’t want to pry. Felt like there was a story there and you seemed upset enough so I decided you needed space, not questions.”
Warmth bloomed in Lily’s chest even as a mirthless chuckle left her lips. “Oh, there’s a story all right. A long one.”
“You don’t have to tell me.”
“I know. But I think I want to.”
He gave her a slow nod, still looking at the road ahead, and muted the rock music that had been faintly playing in the background.
Lily glanced out of the window and took a deep, fortifying breath. “I was heading back home with a friend. He’s from my hometown; we’ve actually been friends since primary school.”
“Wow, that’s a long time,” James said.
“Yeah, it is. Which makes it all the more wretched.” She sighed. “We wanted to go to the same uni, though we have different majors. We haven’t actually seen each other much in the past year or two, which is why I hadn’t realised how much he’s changed.”
“People grow apart,” James murmured.
“We did. Since I started uni, I’ve been so busy trying to figure out who I am and who I want to be.”
“I know what you mean. It’s been the same for me. Living across the entire country from my parents has made me glad to at least have Sirius. I like my major and I feel like I’m on the right path but it definitely has me thinking about myself as a person in a way I haven’t needed to before.”
Lily nodded. His words resonated a lot with her, reassuring her once again that James, unlike Severus, understood. “I feel so, too. Except that for me, I’ve been exploring this side of myself more that I haven’t fully even realised was there before.” Lily had to pause then because her breath painfully caught in her throat. “I suppose I’m the one who’s changed. Or maybe just becoming more of myself, if that makes sense?”
“Makes perfect sense to me,” James replied.
“So maybe that’s true for him, too,” Lily mused, more to herself than to James. Her stomach churned as she finally fully faced the possibility she’d been shying away from since this morning. “Maybe he hasn’t actually changed for the worse. Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention and this is who he’s always been.”
As the awful certainty pummeled her heart, James’ fingers tapped against the steering wheel in a lulling pattern as he waited, silent and patient, for Lily to continue. She took a deep breath and steeled her mind. She’d be going over her and Severus’ fight several times in the near future, but right now she didn’t want to dwell on it. He’d ruined enough of her day and she wasn’t going to let him get the best of her. So she took back control of the narrative. Literally.
“Last November,” Lily said, her heartbeat kicking up as her nerves made their appearance, “I was at this party. Dancing with this girl. A few drinks in. She kissed me.”
Lily paused, but James’ fingers still kept tapping. His face showed nothing but curiosity.
“Did you kiss her back?” he asked.
That was it. A simple question, lacking any kind of judgement. Lily felt like crying and beaming at the same time but chose to go on with her story instead.
“I did,” she replied. “And it was like I was seeing in colour for the first time in my life.”
“I felt that way, too, when I had my first kiss,” James said. “Though I haven’t tried kissing blokes. I’ll leave them to Sirius.”
Lily laughed. “Well, long story short, I’ve been pretty openly bisexual since then. To the point that I forgot I hadn’t actually told my childhood friend about it. And today, we were driving back home together, as we’ve done a few times before. I don’t even remember what we were initially talking about but he made a really homophobic comment which I of course immediately called him out on but the whole thing escalated and I couldn’t deal with it, couldn’t deal with him anymore. So I had him drop me off by the side of the road.”
Lily had to swallow against the knot of bitter fury in her throat. It was too soon for recollections. She needed distance right now, both from Severus and her own emotions. With a grimace, she shoved Severus into a box and slammed the lid shut. It was time to wrap this story up and move on.
“I was pretty much a mess at that point,” Lily said, her voice neutral now. “His comments and beliefs hurt, the argument had been super draining. I was riding on the anger. It was easier being angry than admitting that I’d just lost a friend.”
“I’m sorry,” James murmured in a soft voice. “Sounds like you’ve had a really shitty day.”
“I have,” she answered, “but thankfully it’s looking up now. At this rate, I might be able to end this day on a good note.”
“I hope you will.” James spared her a quick glance. “And if I can help with that, let me know.”
She managed a small smile. “Oh, you already have. You picked me up from the side of the road. Offered to drive me all the way home. You made me laugh when I wasn’t sure I had any laughter left in me. And now you’re just sitting there, listening and letting me dump this whole sordid story of my life on you like some absolute madwoman.”
“Well, we’ve already established that I’m crazy, so you’re in good company,” James joked.
“I really am,” Lily agreed wholeheartedly. “Thank you, James. For everything.”
“You’re welcome. And honestly, I’m glad you felt comfortable enough to confide in me. I mean,” James fumbled. “I, at least, think better out loud. Helps me process. And when you keep something like this in for too long, it starts to fester. So I think it’s better for you to let it out.”
“You’re right.” Lily wasn’t all right yet. She probably wouldn’t be all right for a while yet. But she was in a much better place than she had been just a few short hours ago, and she couldn’t have got here without James.
“Also, the way I see it…” James paused, his ears growing a little pink. “You’ve also gained a new friend today. If you want one.”
“The way I see it,” Lily said, “I could really use a friend like you right now. Thanks, James.”
He grinned.
She smiled back and let her head fall to rest against the window. For the next mile or two, they sat in companionable silence.
*
The clock was slowly nearing six in the evening and they were getting closer to Derby. They’d taken a few breaks on the way, for food and coffee as well as rest. And while James was getting tired, it hadn’t really felt like a 350-mile drive. All thanks to Lily, who’d turned out to be the best company. She’d really saved the whole trip and he was already growing a bit gloomy and fidgety at the prospect of parting ways.
For more reasons than one, if he was honest with himself. But no matter how he felt about her, he was not gonna make it weird and be the creep making moves on a woman while he had her entrapped in a vehicle with him and while she was probably still in a vulnerable place emotionally speaking.
“Oh, I love this song,” Lily breathed out suddenly. “Turn it up.”
James did, and to his delight, Lily started singing along. He grinned at the road ahead, absolutely delighted with her and hoping he could imprint this moment on himself so he could always return to it. Speeding down the motorway, her presence beside him warm and bright like the sun, the song intertwining with her lovely voice swelling in the car and filling his heart.
“You sing really well,” he told her as the song came to an end.
“Thanks.”
A while later, they turned off the motorway. Lily started to give James instructions and to point out familiar places and while it was fascinating to get these additional glimpses into her life, the bottom of James’ stomach was sinking.
The end was getting near.
And then they were driving along a quiet residential street and Lily spoke up, her voice subdued, “It’s the third house on the right.”
A minute later, James pulled the car to a stop. They both stared at the ordinary-looking house in silence.
Lily turned to him. “Well, here we are.”
“Here we are,” James echoed.
“Thank you again for everything, James. You’ve been great.”
“So have you. My brain has remained fully rot-free thanks to you.”
Lily smiled. “I’m glad. Are you gonna be fine for the rest of the trip?”
James shrugged a shoulder. “I’ll manage, it’s only a couple more hours.”
Lily glanced back at the house. “Yeah… I’d invite you in, for tea or coffee or a bathroom break or whatever but it’s my parents’ house and I just don’t want to deal with all the questions they’d have.”
“I get it. It’s fine. I should get going anyway so it won’t be too late when I get home.”
“Right. This is a goodbye then.” Lily’s lips twitched into a small smile.
“For now.” James winked. “You agreed to be my friend so you’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
Lily laughed. If James could bottle the sound he’d always carry it around in his pocket.
“Fine with me.”
She opened the car door and James got out to help her with her luggage.
They stood by the side of the street, staring at one another, each of them seemingly unwilling to move. Finally, James held out his hand.
“Can I get your phone?”
Lily raised her eyebrow. “Why?”
He opted for humour. It was always so easy to hide behind. “If you get too concerned about the status of my poor brain which will surely start to rot in your absence, you could ring me. Or text me. If you had my number.”
Lily’s green eyes sparked. She unlocked her phone and handed it over to James. “I guess it would be good to have your number. I might stay up all night worrying about your rotting brain otherwise.”
James beamed like an idiot as he put in his number, then handed Lily’s phone back.
“There you go.”
“Thanks.” Lily tapped at the number and after a brief moment, James’ phone started to ring in the car. “Just checking that it works.”
“Never hurts to check,” James said, both comforted and giddy about the fact that he now had Lily’s number, too.
“Goodbye, James. For now. Drive safe.”
“Thanks. Take care, Lily.”
She nodded, smiled, and turned to leave. But after just a few steps, she was back, abruptly pulling James into a hug.
He held her close, barely having time to register the warm weight of her body against his and the softness of her hair under his hand and just the utter perfection of her before she had backed away again.
“Sorry. I guess I needed to get that out of my system.”
“No need to apologise. For the record, I love hugs.”
“Good to know. Ok. Bye. For real now.”
“Bye.”
He stood by the car, hands stuffed in his pockets. When Lily reached the door, she turned back to wave. And before James could help himself, he called out to her: “You know, after the break, I’m gonna drive back to Scotland to uni. If you need a ride, I could use the company.”
Lily’s smile was so wide it lit up her face. She tucked a strand of her red hair behind her ear.
“Sure,” she replied. “It’s a date.”

A Sweet Meet Cute
because I'm a sucker for these two flirting, this was dreamt up.
“Please tell me you have one left.” Lily’s bag hits the counter with a loud, unceremonious thud. “I’m in desperate need for a caramel doughnut, preferably one with those caramelised pecans on top.”
Her friend Mary looks over from across the counter of the Cafe. “Early morning meeting again?”
“We’re still working on that project with Australia, which means one of us has to deal with the short stick. It was a 5am start today.” The stool squeaks as Lily sits down, the sound ripping at her temple, adding to the heavy fatigue of the start of her day.
“I don’t envy you.”
keep reading below or read on A03
Lily shrugs, “If I actually want to do some good in the world, working with the Australian researchers is the way to go. I’m going to need the biggest cup of coffee you can find too.”
“The coffee I can do. The doughnut, though. That’s going to be a problem.”
“Come on, Mary,” Lily says, sniffing the air. “You have one, I smell it.”
“You can’t smell it.”
“You underestimate my senses.”
Mary glances under the counter. Her attention settles on a spot near the end of the bar, where the doughnuts are kept beneath a heavy glass dome. They’re a speciality at Casseopia Cafe - handmade pieces of pure joy created by the owner's wife.
The look in Mary’s eye tells Lily that one of her favourites is left. The problem is, they’re her favourite too.
“I’ll jump the bar and get it myself,” Lily warns. Mary laughs, filling the mostly vacant front of house. “There’s one left, but-”
“No buts- None,” Lily says, talking fast so her friend can’t interrupt her. “I. Need. That. Doughnut. This morning’s meeting has already fried my brain and I just need something to make me feel alive again, ok?”
“You need to get laid. That would help you feel alive.” Mary grins.
Lily frowns, “Doughnuts are enough for me. At least, at the moment.”
Lily holds her hand out, palm up, and looks Mary in the eye. She waits for Lily to crack. When a few long seconds pass and Mary still hasn’t even blinked, Lily sighs.
“Someone bought it,” Mary says.
Brushing a strand of her long red hair out of her face as if preparing for battle, she narrows her gaze, “No.”
“No?”
“You aren’t allowed to keep the doughnuts for yourself if a paying customer wants them.” Lily chides.
“Lily-”
“And not more than doughnuts on a day like today.”
“It’s sold,” Mary states, a little more seriously this time.
Lily shoo’s her away. Like a child, Lily climbs onto the stool, knees on the seat, and peers over the bar. Just as Lily suspected, perched on a baby blue ceramic plate, sits a glorious pecan-topped caramel doughnut.
The sight alone makes Lily’s mouth water. Stress slipping from her shoulders already. Staring at the pecans, Lily almost forgets about the missed calls from her sister this morning and how much work she still needs to do from a deadline that week.
“Want me to go ahead and grab it?” Lily asks. The words come out strangled because of her inverted position. When Mary doesn’t answer, she looks up.
She’s looking behind Lily, smoothing out her pink apron. The flirty smile on Mary’s lips clearly isn't for her.
“Hey,” Lily says in an attempt to draw her attention back, “Give it to me.”
“If you insist.”
Lily freezes.
The voice, all gravelly and deep, isn't Mary’s. And unless Mary has become a ventriloquist with a penchant for a leather-scented cologne that sends chills racing down her spine to her gym leggings behind - a behind that’s currently up in the air...
Oh, shit.
Lily’s body tilts over the bar as she tries to find the internal switch from awe to action.
She swallows as she surveys the situation from her precarious position. Mary’s cheeks are tinted pink as she drops her gaze to Lily’s. The giggle hidden by a twist of her lips tells Lily one thing that she knows to be true: whoever is behind Lily is seriously good-looking to warrant the sparkle lighting up her friend's face.
Lowering herself to the stool slowly, she keeps her gaze focused on the blackboard of menu items adorning the wall behind Mary’s head.
“I’ll take the doughnut to go, please,” Lily says with a gulp.
“And I’ll have mine here.”
His voice must be inches behind her, and the proximity makes Lily jump. He chuckles before sitting down.
The richness of his scent blends with the honeyness of his voice - she can hear a slight plummy accent, and she considers what will happen if she dissolves into the barstool right then and there. It’s too early in the day to be humiliating herself in front of cute strangers.
She grabs her bag and digs deep. Sorting through receipts and sweet wrappers (particularly fruit salad sweets) only reminds her how much life is a jumbled mess right now, but it's better than looking at the guy who just saw her arse up in the air. In the thinnest pair of leggings she owns, and with the brightest pair of pink knickers she owns.
A muscled forearm extends across the counter, taking a cup of coffee from Mary. “Thank you,” he says.
Hands still stuck in her bag, wrapped around her purse, she looks at Mary.
Mary grins, “Did you say you wanted coffee?”
Lily clears her throat, trying to ignore the pull of energy from the man beside her. “Yes, please. I'll take it with me.”
Mary scoops up the doughnut. As soon as she’s gone, focusing on the coffee machine at the front of the store, the room seems to shrink around her. Fidgeting in her seat, knowing the guy just saw her in a very unflattering position, she starts to stand.
“You aren’t from around here either. I take it,” he says, before I can execute my plan to flee. “I mean with your accent and all.”
She considers pretending he isn’t talking to her and ignoring him altogether, but that would be rude. And as things are going, his voice might be the highlight of her day, so she sits again.
“You mean, I don’t sound like I’m from Manchester or from Bollington?”  She asks, still not looking at him. “I’m shocked, I thought I had my northern accent spot on.”
He chuckles. “Sorry. You sound very Southern, or even just from London.”
“I’m from Brighton actually, but I’ve lived here a long time...” The words drift away along with all coherent thought, as her gaze is snagged. Despite ascertaining from Mary’s reaction that he’s cute. She’s wholly unprepared for the delicious package in front of her.
Staring back at her are the prettiest eyes she’s ever seen. A gorgeous mix of green and brown. His brows are heavy, his lashes thick and if she could find her voice, she would compliment them. Smooth, tanned skin is highlighted by a brilliant white smile. A sturdy jaw is softened by laugh lines at the corner of his full lips and his dark curls leave even her smuttiest dreams lacking.
She untangles her gaze from his just in time to see Mary coming around the corner with her doughnut on a plate. Just like that, everything comes rushing back.
She doesn’t realise her shoulders had relaxed or the throb in her temple has eased, but she’s well aware when they slam back into her again.
“Did I forget to tell you that I wanted that to go?” She asks, rubbing the side of her head.
“You told me.” She says, and sets the plate down in front of him.
“Hey,” Lily says pointing at the plate, “That’s mine.”
He looks at the doughnut and then at her. Lily fully expects him to slide the plate her way. There’s not part of her, not a piece the size of those caramelised pecans, that thinks he won't.
But he doesn’t.
Instead, he smirks.
“At the risk of you stabbing me with a fork. I beg to differ.” He then tells Mary, “This looks delicious, thank you.”
“You are so welcome.” Mary chirps back.
Lily glares at her friend. “You can’t give that to him because he’s cute, Mary.”
“Hey now,” he interrupts with a furrowed brow. “I’m not sure I like ‘cute’. Ruggedly handsome? Roguishly attractive, maybe?”
“Thief?” Lily offers.
He lifts his fork like he’s taunting her, but doesn’t touch the doughnut.
“Um, maybe I gave it to him because he ordered it first,” Mary offers.
Mary's snip cracks open the dam holding the trickle of her last patience. Lily half stands and half sits on the stool, “Do you even know what happened to me this morning, Mary?”
“No.”
“Let me fill you in,” Lily says through clenched teeth. “Not only did I have a very important meeting at 5 in the morning, but my smoke detector started chirping at 3 in the morning, because the battery went flat, despite me changing them last week. Ok? And I was too short to reach it without climbing on a chair, but because it was 3 in the morning, I fell. Hit my knee, bumped my elbow and cried. Like a baby.”
Mary bites her bottom lip to keep from laughing.
“Then-”
“Hold up,” he says.
“Shush, doughnut thief,” Lily says, waving her hand at him. “Then, I couldn’t make my coffee because SOMEONE used my last Nespresso pod yesterday - which I like to add you work at a cafe so you can afford not to use MY coffee when you decide to visit in the mornings. AND, because my 5am meeting wasn’t hard enough, my deadline got pushed forward to the end of this week.” Lily takes a lungful of air. “I’m over today, and it’s not even really started yet.”
“Ouch,” the man says, taking Lily’s need for oxygen as a cue to add his opinion, “That is a rough morning.”
“Oh, it gets better,” she insists, feeling her blood shoot through her veins. “Then Ben messages me.”
“Sticky notes Ben?”
“Stop calling him that.”
“That’s what Marlene called him the entire time you were dating him.”
“Sticky notes?” the man asks.
“I didn’t date him.” Lily glares at her friend.
“Want to know what's the most surprising about this entire morning? I’ve managed to act like a lady and haven’t taken that doughnut right off your plate.”
He chuckles.
“This isn’t funny.” Lily bounces in her seat, trying not to beg while also trying not to snatch the doughnut off his plate. It’s not so much that she needs the doughnut itself, it’s the comfort of the sweet carbs that will remind her of her Mum’s homemade caramel pecan tarts that can give her the illusion that everything is going to be ok.
Ignoring Lily’s puppy dog eyes, he digs his phone out of the pocket of his trousers. His fingers flying across the screen.
Lily takes the moment to study him from the side. The light catches the lighter strands of brown in his hair. His face is freshly shaved, and she wonders vaguely what he would look like with a good three-day stubble.
For a moment, the doughnut is forgotten. In its place is a thought as delicious as the caramel icing - of the taste of the theifs lips on hers. Her little daydream is halted when he slips his phone back into his pocket.
“How much do I owe you?” He asks Mary.
“6 quid.”
He fishes the change out of his wallet and passes it over to her. “Pay for her coffee too. Can I get a coffee to go though?”
“Sure,” Mary says, taking the money and strolling to the register, leaving the thief and Lily alone.
“Did you just buy my coffee?” She asks.
“Yes.”
“You know what goes good with coffee...” She looks at his plate and then back at him. All he does is laugh.
He gets to his feet, unfolding a body that’s taller and harder than she expected. His trousers are coupled with a smart linen shirt, tight enough against his body that she can see the curve of his biceps and the dip of his waist.
“Are you finished?” He asks.
Lily zips a line from his polished shoes to his face. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t want to walk out of here until you’ve finished appreciating me.” He grins, “If you’re done, I need to go.”
A very hot blush covers her body, and when he laughs, she wonders if he's thinking it's the same colour as her knickers. That makes her blush more.
“You are not the gentlemen I hoped you were.”
He smiles devilishly, assessing her as he shoves his wallet back into his pocket. Then, with a pained expression and a dose of hesitation for her benefit, he slides his plate in front of her. “Here. You can have my doughnut. I know it's not all you wanted but it will have to do.” He takes the coffee cup from Mary for the road.
“I didn’t hear anything you said after, “You can have my doughnut,” Lily says, sticking her finger through the thick icing on top. “But thanks.”
“They have forks you know.”
“I know, but I wanted to make sure you didn’t ask for it back.” A warmth spreads through her tummy as he smiles. “Thanks for this.”
“You’re welcome, Brighton.” He heads to the door but stops before exiting. Looking at Lily over his shoulder, he narrows his eyes. The feel of his attention on her changes. It’s thicker. Not uncomfortable, but it makes her squirm nonetheless. “I’m James Potter, by the way. What’s your name?”
“I’m Lily.” Her voice is breathier than usual, and if she wasn’t still flushed from getting caught staring at him, she might blush again, “Lily Evans.”
“It was nice to meet you.” His features soften as he steps into the sunlight. “Oh, If I didn’t mention it, you owe me for the doughnut.”
And with a final grin that makes Lily sink into her seat, he’s gone.

100 word drabble for @thegobletofweasleys jily week ✨ day five: meet cute
What I've felt, what I've known
James skids to a stop outside a gated garden.
Looking around to find he hasn't been followed, he approaches a stone statue shaking his head and muttering under his breath.
“Everything all right over there?”
He jumps back, holding a hand to his pounding chest as he watches someone rises from a nearby flowerbed, trowel in hand.
“Sorry, didn’t see you there”.
“You ok?”
He smiles, god she’s beautiful, that makes this so much worse.
“I need to take a picture of boo—reasts for a treasure hunt, I thought maybe the statue...”
Lily splutters a laugh, “By all means”.

Going Dutch @jilymicrofics Prompt: sour, words: 188
Lily preferred fruit to a large cooked breakfast; small and fresh and just enough to power her through to lunch.
James was a beans on toast person, and an apple for the road—a green one. Green and sour and crisp; perfect for a keen spring morning such as this.
Two oceans, one of red and one of green, swarmed strict sides of the Great Hall. A commingling of ill-bred chants, whispers of good luck, and illegal banner waving.
A singular green apple sat idle on a platter. Two hands reached for it at once. Fingers brushed. Green eyes locked with hazel ones shrouded by horn-rimmed glasses.
“Whoops. You have it,” said Lily.
James smiled at her. “All yours.”
“Please.” She gestured to the fruit. “Can’t have you falling off your broomstick. McGonagall would throttle me.”
James appeared to consider this for a moment before swiping it up, and snapping it in two.
Lily’s eyes widened as he passed one piece—the larger one—to her.
“Catcha,” he said, then waltzed out of the the great wooden doors.
“Good luck,” Lily called after his billowing maroon flying robes.

22. don’t say yes!!!
@ohmygodshesinsane here you go 😘 This is much more fun than work 🤣
***
"Don't say yes!"
The appalled hiss draws James' attention from the barista-made peacock that adorned the top of his coffee to the table next to him. He's been trying not to stare for the better half of his lunch hour — beautiful as she is — but it's not his fault he's looked away from his third coffee (he can't sit just to stare after all; that would be creepy). Anyone with the least bit of interest in drama — and he is Euphemia Potter's son — would have looked up.
The woman's face is half hidden behind a curtain of dark red curls, but her pink lips are open in incredulity at whatever the speaker is saying. They look rather kissable.
"What do you say instead?" The woman tosses her hair back with a sarcastic scoff, shoving her coffee away from herself so her hands can move freely in indigence. "Say you'd rather have fishhooks in your clitoris than go on —" Her eyes snap to his and it takes James a few dazed seconds to realise it's because he's laughing (rather loudly, in fact). Oops.
"Fishhooks in your clitoris! Isn't that a bit drastic?" He grins as soon as she hangs up.
"A perfectly reasonable response, I assure you." The redhead says seriously. Only the barest twitch of her lips gives the game away.
"Well, if you need someone to be kinder to it, you let me know."

Jily Week: Day 5 - Meet Cute
Written for @thegobletofweasleys’ Jily Week
A small snippet from Chapter 2 of Going Downhill With You
———
Lily feels overwhelmed at the party, it’s a natural tendency for her to feel this way around myriads of people she doesn’t know. It doesn’t help either that she is dressed up modestly as Tigger from Winnie The Pooh, whereas most of people are wearing sexy animal costumes.
She should’ve went costume shopping, but alas, most of her time this week was spent dealing with Petunia, and now, she is clad in a costume she wore three years ago at Aunt Murial’s granddaughter’s animal-themed party. She didn't like the costume then and she doesn't like it now.
Rather than looking for her group of friends, Lily opts to go to the kitchen to indulge in some ice cream cake that Sirius had promised her earlier.
In the kitchen, she finds a tall, broad-shouldered, corporately dressed dude eating a slice of her cake. Who does he think he is, she gasps, eating her Rocky Road Ice Cream cake. Being tipsy doesn’t help quell her aggravation.
“Hey, Mister,” she screams, as she moves towards Corporate Dude, Cake Stealer Extraordinaire, “that’s my cake”, she pokes at his chest. He is clearly startled by her presence but doesn’t make a show.
“Doesn't have your name on it, Miss Tigger”, Corporate Dude says, looking at Lily’s fingers on his chest. "I was promised this small ice cream cake as a bribe to attend this party". That Sirius, what a cunning dog, Lily thinks to herself.
Her aura around him shrinks a little at this newly shared information and she moves slightly away from him, feeling remorseful for the way she shouted at him, “Oh, it seems that I was told the same, we’ve been tricked”.
"Two birds, one stone policy"
"We should do something about it", Lily suggests.
"Seek revenge, pull a prank, maybe?"
"I am in"
A mischievous grin plays on Corporate Dude's face and he reaches out his hand for her to shake; a truce to seek vengeance. Lily shakes his hand happily.
It’s at this moment Lily takes a second to look at him clearly, and she is struck by how handsome Corporate Dude, Cake Stealer Extraordinaire is. Hazel eyes, chiseled jawline, warm smile, a singular dimple on his left cheek; the kind of beauty that is easy to soak in, like sunshine on a breezy day.
“Your glasses are slightly askew, may I ?”, she asks.
He nods simply, gazing at her intently (or her costume).
She moves closer and her breath hitches slightly at their close proximity. She feels as though he does the same. She raises to her tiptoes to fix his frames. “There, looks better now”. There’s inexplicable electricity that flows between them, a kind that Lily wants to explore. The overwhelming sensation that Lily felt mere minutes ago is nowhere in sight.
“Thanks for the help and sorry again for earlier”, he mumbles. He cards his dark unkempt locks with his hand.
“What are you dressed up as? ”, she asks to ease the tension between them.
“James”, he mimics James Bond’s accent.
“James Bond?”, she surmises cheekily.
“James Potter”, he answers, his bashfulness now replaced by a grin.
Shit. He is Sirius’ brother, you idiot.

The soles of his shoes clacked against the damp cobblestone path. Sirius wasn't entirely sure where he was going, but he'd arrived a full 45 minutes early on campus, so he was really just killing time. He'd just begun thinking of heading to the library when he came across a small building, with a sign overhead that read "Coffee on Campus". Sirius had heard of this cafe before- his friend Marlene had preached to him about how "Utterly amazing!" their mochas were. Hell, Sirius thought, why not?
Or, Sirius makes an impulse decision to try out a new cafe. He leaves with a mocha, and a crush.

I just realised I haven’t shared this here yet, so if you’d like to read a relatively short (as in 3k-word-oneshot-short) university AU, coffee shop AU, fluffy Wolfstar meet-cute, consider checking it out!
Alternating POVs between Sirius and Remus (but it’s in 3rd person because I physically can’t write in 1st).

-------- This is an old fic, part of some drafts of a oneshot collection I had on Wattpad that I'm moving here! Writing quality is probably questionable, and I'm still trying to get a hang of using this website, but I hope you enjoy it anyway!
