The Interview [K. Hammett]
Tumblr media
pairings: kirk hammett/female! reader
warning/s: smut, inappropriate language. MINORS DNI
-request via message of the reader interviewing kirk! (REQUESTS OPEN)
5:00 AM
That’s what the clock read as I blinked my eyes groggily. My body was still numb from sleep. The hours rushed by so fast it was as if I never slept.
“God, I have an interview.”  I thought as I rose from the soft duvet and headed toward the kitchen to make myself some coffee. I glanced at my apartment windows noticing the still dark sky. As the coffee maker softly hummed in the background, I pulled out my papers to look back into the history of the band I would interview later on.
METALLICA
That’s what was written as the headliner of the article I was reading in huge bold text.
Hopping into the shower I was rehearsing my questions, I had none prepared. That was the point of our brand. We intend to make things come up naturally and we invest on making sure we knew who we were talking to flat out.
“Should I look up a photo of them?” ... Shaking my head, I thought an element of surprise would be good.
After the shower I hurriedly rushed to my closet. “Should I dress in black? I mean- they’re a metal band. Am I supposed to look the part?” All these questions rushed in. I really should have prepared more the day before. I pulled out some black button long sleeves and some denim shorts with a black studded belt.
Downing the coffee in one go, I grabbed the keys of my car and rushed to the venue. It was in some room of the arena they were performing in. Call time was at 7:00 and it’s already 6:48.
Parking was easy, the lot was huge. I found myself running to the arena and into a hallway. Stopping at a door with 1507 written at the front.
I took a deep breath in and entered. The crew was in already. 2 guys named Michael and Jim.
As soon as I walked in Jim (the cameraman) hit record.
Only one guy was sitting on the chair, I looked back at Michael in confusion as he just nodded at me to go on.
“Oh, um hi-” I extended my hand over the table as I took a seat down in front of him.
“Kirk. Kirk Hammett. Yeah, it’s just me, the guys are still sleeping.” He laughed softly as he shook my hand.
“Yeah sure, that’ll be fine. We could start the one-on-one interview now if you’d like?”
“Oh for sure yeah, you guys are the Ride or Die people, right? How does this work?” He looked at me with intent as I waved off Jim to stop filming.
“Yup that’s us. Basically, we ask general questions. Some fan questions that could get a liiitle too personal can come up and you have to answer honestly. That’s our whole gig.” He nodded, his mouth making a small “o”.
“This’ll be interesting for sure. Never expected a cute girl from a name like Ride or Die actually.” His comment made me heat up; I mean. This man was gorgeous, he had such nice curls and an adorable smile. There was so much I wanted to-
“Hey. Are we starting?” Jim interrupted my thoughts as Kirk looked back at me, amused.
“Ah yeah- sorry. Start rolling.” He hit the record button as I once again extended my hand to the guitarist.
“(Y/N)”
“Pretty name, I’m uh. Kirk.” He grinned at the camera almost awkwardly.
“Renowned guitarist of Metallica. Wow it truly is an honor. How are you doing today, Kirk?”
“Haven’t had breakfast, the boys are sleeping, it’s 7:00 AM. I’m pretty good.” We both shared a laugh as we finished up some questions on the album, the band’s touring and his thoughts on the city.
“Now for the fun part. Fan questions. I’ve gathered some questions they are dying to know.” I enunciated the ‘dying’, watching him suddenly turn to stifle a small laugh.
“I’m kinda scared to be honest. They could get a little crazy.”
“You’ll be fine! This one is from Kacey, and she wants to know what your type in groupies are.” I cocked a brow at his furrowed ones.
“Wow. This one’ll need some deep thought.” He looked up as if he was reflecting.
“Probably someone like her.” He nodded at me as I held my chest in pretend shock.
“I look like a groupie?”
“You’d look good as one.” It was Michael's turn to chuckle as the camera whipped to him and I shot him a look.
“Who was the last person you had in bed?” I continued.
“Jesus. At least get me some breakfast first, wow.” He rubbed his face in embarrassment as he went on “Come with me and it could be you.”
“God I would.”
“What was that?” He shot me a look as if in shock.
“Huh?”
“You said you would. You’ve got some honesty there Ms. Interviewer.” He leaned in my direction as I mouthed a “cut that out” to Michael, who just rolled his eyes at me.
“This is the last question.” I stated as he clasped his hands together, awaiting.
“What place do you want to visit most?”
“Back to serious ones huh. Hawaii. It just looks so relaxing y’know.”
“Well. Thanks Kirk. That’s all.” I glanced back at the 2 men who hurriedly sorted their gear back into place.
“Yeah, the rest of the band probably isn’t going to wake up any sooner.” Kirk called out to me as I rose from my seat to leave.
“Ah yeah that’s fine. I could come back some other time.” I put the notes I had back in my bag.
“I was serious by the way. I think you’re gorgeous.” My heart was suddenly pounding, I looked back to see both Jim and Michael gone.
“Thanks, Kirk. You look goo..d” I mentally face palmed. I was dead nervous, and it was more than obvious.
“I don’t bite (Y/N). Come here.” He rose from the seat and approached me. He was taller, by some inches. He smelled like tobacco and a few hints of spearmint.
“I’m sure you don’t.” I backed up toward a couch just at the end of the room.
“Relax. I’ll take care of you. Sit down.” He motioned toward the couch as he knelt on the ground.
“Tell me. Do you want this?”
Only a sicko wouldn’t want this. He was knelt before me and I just wanted to scream. “Yes please.” He grabbed my calves from the bottom as he softly trailed them on top of my knees. “Remove your shorts.” Quickly removing my belt, I looked away in embarrassment, I was still wearing my underwear and I was already flustered. Christ. “Pink panties? Thanks for dressing up for the interview I guess.” Kirk grinned, his fingers clasping at both sides and dragging the underwear down.
“Hey. I could stop anytime.” His brown eyes bore into mine as I shook my head with a clear no.
His rough hands caressed my thighs, opening my legs further. “You’re so wet already.” He dragged a finger down my slit and back up. Resting a hand on my stomach he licked a stripe and gave a coy smile at my flustered face. “Do you want me to stop?” His voice was almost a whisper as the pounding in my ears increased.
He stood up and leaned toward me to give a kiss, his lips were soft and wet and strangely tasted like mint. Grabbing my waist, he sat next to me and pulled me up to his lap as he continued to feather my neck with small kisses.
I lifted my hips as he unzipped his pants and pulled out his cock, he raised his hand to gather the slick from my cunt and pumped himself, his breath hitching.
“Are you ready?”
“Yes, please.” I breathed out as he gently placed both his hands on my hips and lowered my body to his tip. “Fuck.” He moaned out, stretching me as I whined at the foreign feeling. My eyes squeezed shut while he whispered reassuring words, dragging his other hand on the back of my head and pulling me closer.
“It’s alright sweet girl, move when you’re ready.”
I rested my head on his shoulder as I raised my hips up slightly and started moving at a slow pace. Gaining the courage as I got used to the pressure, he met my bounces with a hard thrust each time. I moved my head up to look at him. His hair stuck at the sweat of his forehead and his blown eyes focused on his cock pounding my cunt.
He flipped me over and was now on top, still pounding, chasing his high. My legs were over his arms now as I gasped at the new position. Placing his thumb on my clit, he rubbed small circles, his jaw slack. My eyebrows furrow as I feel my orgasm rushing. “C’mon, baby.” He leaned to kiss me again, suppressing my soft moans.
“Fuck, Kirk. I’m close.” My eyes started to tear up as his pace quickened. He’s hitting my sweet spot over and over as I choked a moan and felt my body tense and slacken at my release.
“Your pussy feels so fucking good. I’m close, baby.” He rambled as he rammed into me, and I felt him fill me up after his thrusts.
He pulled out as I swallowed at the feeling of loss. He knelt in front of me between my legs and laid his head on my stomach, breathless.
“Wanna interview me again sometime?” He looked up with the same cheeky grin.
“I’ll think about it.”

Top 5 color?
Ooo interesting question, and I have such different answers to this:
It's funny cause lighting design is one of my favorite things and yet I never talk about it. For uses of lighting, I have two favorites for the year:
Moonlight Chicken
Tumblr media
gif from @wanderlust-in-my-soul
The warmth of Jim and Li Ming's home, the cold of Heart and Wen's home, the way the light slowly dims throughout the entirety of Wen and Alan's break up? Moonlight Chicken has some of the best, most thoughtful, and incredibly interesting uses of lighting of the BLs I've seen from 2023. (Fun fact! Orange and blue lighting color combination is probably my favorite lighting combo because it's so gorgeous).
Playboyy
Tumblr media
Playboyy is certainly a messy messy show, and I don't think it is using it's lighting intentionally like Aof was in Moonlight Chicken, but it is getting fucking creative and artistic with some of it's lighting and I love that shit. They've been going hard on the reds and the purples in this show and I support it.
_
For my absolute favorite color moment of the year, I have to give that to:
What Did You Eat Yesterday?
Tumblr media
gif by @my-rose-tinted-glasses
Shiro getting him and Kenji matching aprons for Kenji's birthday. The colors may not match, there may not be a color exchange, but holy mother of god this scene absolutely destroyed me. Shiro has grown so much throughout the course of this show and it makes me so fucking emotional.
-
My singular favorite use of color in a show this year:
Last Twilight
Tumblr media
gif by @tomystars
Once again Aof is taking the crown for such intentional uses of color. I don't care here if the pink has an actual meaning to the color, what I care about is what this shirt does to show Mhok's character, grant some autonomy to Day, and give you a sense of how Day's vision works. Which, I know the show has been doing pretty consistently throughout, but you can really see here why bright neon colors work really well for Day, and why Mhok 100% puts those bright neon yellow laces on Day's old shoes.
and finally...
Net's skin
Tumblr media
gif by @ueasking
Net has such a gorgeous skin tone, and @neuroticbookworm and I weep every time some magazine, show, or other promo photo lightens his skin. Honestly I am personally not vibing with Middleman's Love but both Net and James look so good in it.
ASK ME MY TOP 5 OF ANYTHING BL 2023

[ID: an uncoloured drawing for a panel next to the publicized version. They're both from the comic Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #194. In them, Batman is shown from the waist up. He's looking at Jim Gordon, who's off panel, with a penitent expression after being accused of something he secretly did do. He has his palm pressed against his chest and is blocking the bat emblem as his other hand is clasped ontop of it. In the initial drawing, there's a halo floating above his head as well as several tiny hearts mixed in with the lights that surround him. In the publicized panel, the hearts and halo has been removed and two speech bubbles have been added. He's in front of a terra rose background and is starting to say, “Jim, I don't even know what you're...” But Jim cuts him off, saying, “Stop it. I'm tired of this.”
The third photo is a description of the drawing from the artist's (Seth Fisher) website. It reads: This is another page that the DC editors changed: no halos or hearts around Batman, no matter how (disingenuously) contrite he is. In the final edition, the halo and heart in the center bottom frame have been excised.]

Janis Joplin and Peter Tork in the audience at Monterey Pop Festival, June 1967. Photos by Jim Marshall (?).
“On my birthday we were in L.A. playing a club & everyone was so nice! The owners of the club sent me 3 dozen red roses — all over the stage when I came in, the band gave me 2 doz. […] Peter Tork sent me 1 doz. red roses. And after the show we had lots of champagne & a birthday cake. Really nice.” - From a 1968 letter sent by Janis Joplin to her family, via Genesis Publications
“‘My favorite guest star [on The Monkees TV show] was the one that was never on the show,’ Tork said. ‘I always wanted Janis Joplin,’ [Tork] said.” - The Defender, February 21, 1996 (x)
“At a gig in Los Angeles Janis picked up a busboy, a young Peter Tork, at the Golden Bear club, and it took a bit of convincing, but Tork, who later became one of the Monkees, told me about their off-and-on relationship. ‘Janis made no particular point of displaying her intelligence,’ he said, ‘but this came up and she couldn’t help setting me straight. She had her bottle of Southern Comfort right there, and I told her she would get “sclerosis” of the liver. She corrected me on my usage of the word, “No, it’s cirrhosis of the liver.”’ Peter laughed. ‘In those days acts were booked for a week, and there we were! For a while every time I saw Janis, she was happy to see me, hugged me, gave me that great big old laugh, and the next thing I knew we were rolling in the hay together. Then one day I caught up with her at a Who concert and she wasn’t friendly to me at all, and I said, “Okay, I get it, she’s after one of these other guys!” That was that.’” - Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon by Pamela Des Barres (1996)
“She was wonderful to know and to hang out with, and of course it was wonderful to enjoy her fabulous talent.” - Peter Tork, askpetertork dot com, July 2010
“Janis should have been knocking ‘em down into her sixties.” - Peter Tork, Headquarters radio, September 1989
Peter Tork: “Actually, Janis and I knew each other before we both broke, before either of us broke. I was a bar — I was a busboy and a beer jerk at a pub called the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, California. I had just gone to California. And Janis was in Big Brother and the Holding Company, and they were a pretty well-known San Francisco band, but Janis hadn’t broken as big as she became later. And they came through, and Janis and I just fell to talking. We had a lot in common, I mean, there was something in common, I — spoke to her about her drinking, I said, ‘You might get sclerosis,’ she said, ‘Cirrhocis!’ I got corrected. I didn’t mind being corrected. and, you know... And, and we just became —” Q: “You bonded. You had a connection there.” PT: “Pretty close. [...] We lost contact. Then, a couple of years later, The Monkees were already rolling, I’m watching 2001: Space Odyssey [released on April 2, 1968]. And Janis is in the audience, too, and she, ‘Hey! How ya doing?’ She’s so raucous, you know, ‘Hey, how ya doing, honey?’ She was fabulous. And so we hung —
”
Q: “And that was the night?
“ PT: “No, it was back and forth, because then we would… What happened was, Big Brother was playing New York, and I was in New York, as I recall, and so, you know, I called her up and said, ‘I’m around.’ So she came up and hung out. And I knew, of course, the band and I are pretty good friends, David Getz the drummer’s a good friend of mind to this day, and Sam Andrew, and James —” Q: “So you’re in New York, Big Brother’s playing, and you see Joplin —” PT: “And we go there, and, yeah, I… Janis, you know, retires, ‘I’ll be there in a minute,’ and I walked in, we had some conversation and…” Q: “You laid the lumber. Lucky you. You’re something special.” PT: “I am.” Q: “Only one time?” PT: “Twice.”
Q: “Twice?” PT: “Yeah.” Q: “She came back for more.” PT: “Or I did!” (laughter) Q: “Yeah, she was bored, second time she… I think it would be very tough to please a Janis Joplin sexually.” PT: “Uh, well, I couldn’t tell you. She was — hey, a second time is a testimonial, right?” - WFAN-FM, November 24, 2009

Behind the scenes of The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (Part 10)
From a June 2006 SFX article from the set:
We break for lunch (on a bus - it’s just like being in Extras!).  “Steve!!!” Tennant squeals, sitting down for a flick through the new ish of your favorite mag and a gossip about the Star Wars TV series.  After a photo shoot of the entire production team for Radio Times (we considered sneaking in at the back but, erm, bottled it), it’s back to... standing around.  We sneak a peek at Billie’s continuity sheet. It has a photo of her outfit and a breakdown, right down to “pink Calvin Klein bikini bottoms over a black g-string”.  Hmmm... do you think Rose changes both pairs every day, or just the inside pair?  Sadly, we’re unable to establish what keeps David Tennant’s tackle snug, but our money’s on a vintage pair of Doctor Who underpants with Tom Baker’s grinning fizzog on the groin.
On spotting a copy of SFX, Billie “ooh”s at our Doctor Who cover, “ew!”s at our Slither feature, and giggles at a shot of Tennant standing with thighs manfully thrust apart:  “Check it out!” she purrs, “Sexual!”
“I know what I want to ask you!” David says, rattling off a question for Ask the SFXperts.  This prompts Billie to declare her love for the Jim Henson series The Storyteller.  “My friend bought me the DVD box set!  It’s brilliant!”

Review 527: My Mama And The Full-Scale Invasion
Written By: Sasha Denisova
Directed By: Yury Urnov
Simulcast By: League of Livestream Theater
@wilmatheater tinyurl.com/Mama-Invasion-Tix
While sitting in The Wilma Theater to watch this beautiful play we got friendly with a wonderful couple sitting in the seats next to us. They talked about seeing a show in-person and then watching it on demand later. We told them that we had seen both an on-demand show at the Wilma and plenty in-person yet we had never gotten to see the same show done both ways. Then we saw our friends at the League Of Livestream Theater (LOLST) were going to be running a Simulcast of this show that very weekend. We decided that now was a great time to cross that item off of our critic bucket list.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is worth mentioning that The Wilma Theater is dedicated to offering all of the shows in their season as a VOD option after the in-person shows have closed. This is how we found their particular brand of staging and fell in love with their art. We just knew that we had to see the kind of art that uses projections, and video, sound, and movement in-person. On-Demand video is not just about accessibility it’s a way to introduce broader audiences to Philadelphia style theatre.
The League of Livestream Theater shares the same mission except expanded to theater companies across the whole country and live as it’s happening. At the beginning of every live stream executive director Jim Augustine tells the audience about how the live performance will be “beamed” directly into your home as it is happening. We’ve said this in another review but they create streams so well done that they feel like they were “digitally native”like they were always meant to be seen on a screen. Yet now that they are streaming a show that we’ve seen in-person is our opinion any different?
Even though you lose the broadness of seeing the entire stage at one time the what you gaijn in exchange is a focus on more intimate moments giving us close ups of faces, and spotlighting the performers in new ways. Through the framing of the camera we are zeroed in on the performers. When you are forced to focus on what’s happening in the moment and not looking around at every part of the stage scenes start to resonate in a different way. You might hear all this and think that corners were cut, projections were lost, or that all the wonderful set and lighting design was sacrificed to put the performers front and center. That’s not the case. This is one of those times where “different but just as good” actually makes complete sense.
Yes it is true that we couldn’t see some of the projections because of the camera angles. Yet whenever that happened the titles would come up on the screen. If you had never seen the show in-person you wouldn’t even know what you were “missing”. In effect you’re not missing anything. The folks at LOLST are artists. Yet instead of making their own art their job is understanding the show, understanding artists that made it, and transposing that onto the screen live in front of an audience from all over the map.In fact, in the final scene where we meet the real Mama her face filled the entire screen and it was like we were talking to her ourselves.
It is very fitting that we had this experience watching a show created by a Ukrainian artist that found a theatrical tribe that rose to the occasion to translate her work and bring it to an audience in Washington DC and Philly and then talk about an organization that is in the same business. You can call them artistic translators. Very few of the creative teams of the shows that will make up the LOLST season are considering how their work will look on an LCD screen or through a camera lens. When they enter the rehearsal room they are thinking in terms of the theater seats and making sure all of the lines and actions will read all the way to the back row. This is where LOLST comes in. They share the same mission with everyone, this work should be seen all over the world. The folks behind the camera are just another set of artists on the team making sure that a new contingent of audiences fall in love with The Wilma Theatre just like we did.

The Breeders – The Wiltern – Los Angeles, CA – October 19, 2023
Alternative rock band The Breeders exemplified their timeless appeal as they took the stage in front of a roaring sold out crowd at The Wiltern.
It’s a special privilege to experience the band on tour, currently for the 30th anniversary of their hit album Last Splash and witness the show’s love letter to fans as the band played the album in its entirety — and in sequential order.
Tumblr media
The tour also stays true to Last Splash with its lineup of band members who recorded the album, including lead vocalist and guitarist Kim Deal, lead guitarist Kelley Deal, drummer Jim Macpherson, and bassist Josephine Wiggs.
The Breeders were initially formed in 1989 by Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly as a side project, branching out from their bands Pixies and Throwing Muses, respectively. Over the next few years, Josephine Wiggs was recruited as a bassist and Kim’s twin sister Kelley Deal joined on lead guitar. It was when Pixies broke up in 1993 that The Breeders turned into a full-time pursuit with drummer Jim Macpherson on board to cement the well-known lineup as it stands today.
Tumblr media
The commercially and critically acclaimed album Last Splash was released in 1993 and the single “Cannonball” rose to prominence on numerous Billboard charts, including peaking at #2 for US Alternative Airplay and appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
As the renowned distortion blasted through the venue to commence their biggest hit, “Cannonball,” the energetic crowd’s cheers increasingly grew as they heard the iconic bass line and sang along to the catchy “oohs.”
Tumblr media
Each song continued to be met with buzzing excitement as the band performed with the same grungy passion and musicianship that made everyone fall in love with them 30 years ago, including the famous slide guitar in “No Aloha,” the pristine guitar beat in “Do You Love Me Now?” and the beautiful harmonies from the Deal sisters during “Saint.”
The Breeders have released the 30th Anniversary Edition album of Last Splash with a newly unearthed B-Side called “Go Man Go.” They can be seen delivering exhilarating performances next year in Australia as well as supporting the Foo Fighters and Olivia Rodrigo on tour.

Halo there! Hope youre doing good wherever you are right now. I absolutely ADORE your work, cant wait for the next Guns n Roses fic!!
So, i've been having a multiverse kick rn, and i already read all of your aus (except for trauma au, i already know the basic things that happened through your tumblr posts and i dont want to further break my heart reading your trauma fic🥲)
NOW, imagine like a some sort of monthly multiversal meetings, where all of your aus (fantasy, ego manor, etc ,including evil au) kinda get together and discuss some stuff. Like, a character meet up with themselves and kinda do bonding/talk about all kinds of things
IMAGINE HOW FUCKING CHAOTIC IT WOULD BE!!
The Dark Meeting would probably be the most proffesional out of all meetings, EM!Dark's the one who leads/arrange it(i know hes dead in the canon ego manor, just imagine its before he died or an alternate timeline where he lived)
Trauma!Dark Sitting the farthest from Evil!Dark (poor T!dark gets reminded of the actor after feeling his aura)
Dad!Dark bringing leftover cookies and Photo albums so he can show the other darks what his version of his kids looked like as children :D
Fantasy!Dark chilling in a fuckin inflatable pool while petting Lion!Dark in his animal form. Winged!dark probably joined him on petting too
Evil!Dark probably doesnt even want to be there (the only reason hes there is probably gathering info so he can like, kill them or smth)
Mob!Damien/Dark being Confused/Shook after he found out that these versions of himself is married?? To Detective Barnum especially???
Imagine the darks that can change into their female form, and Mob, fantasy and dad Dark just stared at each other like "How the FUCK did they do that???"
Other that that, im having brainrot when it comes to this au, i think thinking what there dynamics would be like will be very interesting ;)
That sounds like nothing but pure unadulterated chaos, imagining like half a dozen Wils, a bunch of pairs of Jims, and more than one Bim all in a room just on their own sounds like too much, never mind all of them XD rest in pieces Dark's fragile, fragile sanity

What are the stories about Freddie and Jim that warm your heart the most?
hmmm
the clover story
Jim sending Freddie a letter with a picture of a cat he used to own back when they were first dating
Jim hiding Lily in his jacket when he brought her to Garden Lodge to surprise Freddie
Jim buying a red rose for Freddie in front of everyone and him getting very embarrassed and thanking Jim later in private
Jim buying flowers for Freddie with a note that said, "from the wife!", only for it to be misspelled and Freddie bursting into laughter when Jim told him what happened
Freddie keeping a photo of Jim's family on the bedside table, so he'd see it when he woke up in the morning
The two of them watching a romantic movie and Freddie asking if they'd spend the rest of their lives together like the people in the movie

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Ohio, July 26, 2023
It was 90 degrees at 7:45 in the evening of July 26 when Lyle Lovett and His Large Band took the stage dressed in black-tie formal wear and turned up the heat further as they declared, “It’s a Naked Party.”
“We’re happy for this cool weather” Lovett said later in the evening without irony, noting he lives in Texas, where a crushing heat wave has lingered for weeks.
Acclamation notwithstanding, clothing-optional might have been the way to go. But Lovett - who also performed “Pants is Overrated,” inspired by his kids’ refusal to get dressed - and his band were hosting a soiree.
After the aural nudity, Lovett and his three singers exited the stage to leave the remaining 11 members - four pieces of brass; acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitars; Jim Cox’s piano; Stuart Duncan’s violin; and the rhythm section of Leland Sklar and Russ Kunkel, who employed sticks, brushes, mallets and his hands during the show - to strut their big-band stuff on “The Blues Walk,” the only instrumental of the evening.
The band was back at full strength as Lovett threw his head back and held notes for inhuman lengths on a purely country-and-western reading of “Stand by Your Man.”
And so it went for two-and-three-quarters hours at Rose Music Center in suburban Dayton, Ohio, as Lovett and his multi-genre band played comedic soul on “She’s No Lady,” ballroom balladry on “Are We Dancing,” blues on “Pig Meat Man,” gospel on the hand-clapping, choir-singing “Church” and virtually every other style of American music as ragtime, Dixieland, bluegrass and more popped up across the band’s many improvisational interludes.
Less witty than usual, Lovett instead dedicated his between-song banter to speaking with his onstage compatriots and detailing their musical backgrounds. He repeatedly remarked on how lucky is is to play with them. And he is correct.
With 15 players and singers on stage at any given time, train wrecks might be expected. But these are big-shot studio and touring musicians - and in the case of the horn section, college professors of music - and their execution was flawless. This is how steel-guitar comes to sound right at home inside big-band jazz. It’s the reason six-string, fiddle, steel and vocal showcases can fit inside a song like the swaggering “My Baby Don’t Tolerate” and not come off as self-indulgent. And it’s why the seven piece that performed the Chieftains’ arrangement of “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down” packed every bit of power as did the full ensemble that had the audience shaking it in the proverbial steam bath on “That’s Right (You’re Not from Texas).”
Lovett is a musical chameleon and a craftsman committed to quality. So, despite often playing small houses, selling fewer than half of the Rose’s 4,200 seats and proving on such tender ballads as “12th of June” and “The Queen of Know,” that the core band is capable of breathtakingly gorgeous three- and four-part harmony, he spends heavily on salaries so fans may delight in his choir’s bass-to-gospel, doo-wop-to-barbershop stylings.
