btw this post kinda made me think about how, as both a JGY and SJ fan, i see both of them get similar yet opposite treatment from certain parts of their fanbases.
like JGY consistently gets interpreted to be much more of a prickly asshole and a ruthless murderer than he actually is, while SJ is often toned down into a Tough (but secretly caring) Teacher archetype with full disregard for his canonical blatant and cruel abuse of children (well, one specific child as far as we know, but he's a quality over quantity man for sure).
like maybe some JGY stans would benefit from switching to full-time SJ apologism instead of trying to mold their polite little customer service smile blorbo into an angry feral kitten with abandonment issues. and vice versa.

i'm never around on this hellsite anymore but i just read the xueyao extra and i have an important take:
xue yang and jiggy are friends in the similar, very important manner wen qing and wwx are friends, which is "you're my best friend, i would take a bullet for you, but also what the fuck is wrong with you"
unhinged besties have my heart, thank you, good day

Sometimes, I remember how fucking iconic it was of Nie Huaisang to destroy everything Jin Guangyao had suffered to build in his life, and then watch as it all came crumbling down around him, with absolutely no remorse at all.
And the fact that he got Lan Xichen to kill Jin Guangyao like that, on the spot, unplanned, improvising???
Truly an inspiration. No one does revenge like Nie Huaisang. Wish to never get on his bad side.

The Evidence:
Jin Guangyao is referred to as looking so much like his mother that people mistake the statue of her as being of him.
JGY's mother was widely known as an incredibly beautiful woman.
JGY wears an iconic and silly looking hat (to draw attention to his attained station, even though no one else of the same station in any adaption is wearing that hat style)
My (Totally Correct) Conclusion:
JGY was tired of people looking at him and thinking "what a beautiful woman" so he started wearing a gender affirming hat. Now people look at him and instead think "what a silly hat"
And it's better

[mdzs] In depth analysis of Lan Xichen’s name
It’s been 2.5 years since my last MDZS name analysis(!!), and since then I’ve gotten so many requests from the fandom wanting to see more. So here’s to everyone who have enjoyed reading my posts so far - today I’ll be diving into Lan Xichen’s name. Sit back as this is an interesting one!
Tumblr media
Lan Xichen is his zi ,or courtesy name, which means ‘chancellor of the morning sunlight’ (Xi 曦 - morning sunlight; Chen 臣- chancellor, minister).
It derives from the poem ‘Xian Qing Fu’ 《闲情赋》 (Ode to a Quiet Life) by Eastern Jin dynasty recluse poet Tao Yuan Ming 陶渊明. Tao is remembered for his appreciation of beauty and serenity of the natural world around him, often admiring the good of others and documenting his wishes for a peaceful and fair society. (NB: The majority of Chinese people would know of the phrase ‘世外桃源’ - Xanadu / fantastical place of great idyllic magnificence and beauty, which originated from him.) This particular poem is a long study on the beauty and virtues of an idealised woman, and is known today as one of the most iconic bodies of work celebrating a woman’s true inner qualities. “悲晨曦之易夕,感人生之长勤” (bēi chén xī zhī yì xī, gǎn rén shēng zhī cháng qín), translates figuratively to ‘it is regrettable that the light of this morning will soon be replaced by the dark night, reminding people that life is filled with endless fatigue.’
One can’t help but draw parallels to Xichen’s life - he was always a noble figure, approached people with sincerity, treated everyone with an equal level of respect and believed deeply in those he stayed close to. But life could not always pay back what he gave to others, as he learnt of his trusted friend Jin Guangyao’s corrupt ways and betrayal - the light that was replaced by darkness.
I find it fascinating how poet Tao’s perspective of the world is so similar to Xichen’s. Tao is known for spending much of his life in reclusion, living in the countryside, receiving only a few guests he had a strong bond with, reading and indulging in his love for poetry. As a talented and knowledgeable man, he spent a decade of his life as a politician - but soon lost faith in a system that was characterised by nepotism, violence, corruption and civil disorder. Torn between ambition and the desire to retreat into solitude, he chose the latter. I wonder if MXTX drew inspiration from this, as Xichen also began as a leader in the cultivators’ world, is a huge lover and collector of literature, and after all the turmoil also decided to withdraw into reclusion.
Xichen’s birth name is 涣 (Huàn), which has two main meanings: 1) ‘melting of snow’; 2) ‘water dispersing in all directions’. His title is 泽芜君 (zé wú jūn), which literally means ‘nourisher of barren lands’ (泽润 - to nourish, bestow; 平芜 - land overgrown with weeds). Combining the two, we can understand his name to mean ‘water disperses in all directions, nourishing everything it touches’. 泽 in Chinese is used specifically to describe bestowing something deep, long-lasting and meaningful (as supposed a one time gift/favour - which would be 惠). In the book, MXTX also describes him as “清煦温雅,款款温柔” (meaning ‘warm, gracious and elegant, gentle in all aspects’). Clearly, his name highlights the grace and kindness he radiates and bestows on everyone around him. He is the keeper of peace and righteousness.
Bonus:
Note that the word Huan 涣 has a water particle, similar to his brother Lan Wangji’s birth name Zhan 湛 - it brings to mind the ‘Twin Jades of Lan’ title for the brothers, with a water element - like Pisces.
Interestingly, in ‘I Ching’ or ‘Book of Changes’, the ancient Chinese divination text which contains of 64 hexagrams, there is a 涣 hexagram:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, it represents how gentleness can summon greatness. I copy the below from iching-online.com:
Tumblr media
In simple terms, it symbolises water that washes away dirt and baptises new life within oneself. And the aftermath is precisely Zhan 湛 in his brother’s name, meaning crystal clear water.
Other name analyses:
Wei Wuxian
Lan Wangji
Jiang Wanyin
Lan Sizhui

Web Novel Weapon Tournament
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Please be courteous in the notes.]
Bichen - Lan Wangji’s sword (MDZS)
Submission:
this sword has been through a lot...
Cursed Knowledge Link
Mod Propaganda
Yes, this is the sword Wei Wuxian stuck up his ass in the Incense Burner Extra. It’s also Lan Wangji’s main weapon that was included in the iconic “Lan Wangji calling Wei Wuxian his scene” where Wei Wuxian believes he’s pointing toward Bichen (Chapter 31). It’s a legend, and I would be doing a disservice to Jin Guangyao (who Bichen defeated in the first round of the Danmei Character Tournament) if I did not include it.
Xin Mo - Luo Binghe’s sword (Ver. 2: Electric Boogaloo - SVSSS)
Submission:
it is literally The web novel weapon??? like it’s the demon emperor’s golden finger that he found in the eternal abyss? it has fanon continuity points as well if you believe that the metal rod wei wuxian (MDZS) touches in the mouth of the turtle is either a previous or later form of xin mo. Xin Mo is soooooooo good that it had to fight itself at one point! XIN MO SUPREMACY !!!!!!!

top 5 fictional villains
oh man how am I supposed to choose from my entire villain warehouse. let's see.
1. Xue Yang. I mean, if this wasn't obvious from my [gestures] whole blog. But boy did I fall hard from pretty much scene one of my first watch of The Untamed, and then never looked back from there. He's just! What a guy. An icon. I love him so much. Fucks up his own life irreversibly and doesn't even realize he's doing it until too late. Whoops.
2. Maeglin. #my trash son. I waffled between putting him and Celegorm on this list (I could've done both, but, well, I felt like I should pick one per canon) and decided to go with Maeglin because he's arguably worse? Though I guess it probably depends on your metric. (I'm not really interested in arguing on that one, I don't particularly care, they're both my beloveds and there's no changing that at this point.) Seriously fucked up childhood that's got to fuck some things up in one's head to begin with, and then making some terrible choices later on that just go rapidly downhill, and again, tragedy of condemning oneself but also how doomed was he from the beginning (pretty doomed).
3. Vegas Theerapanyakul. I kind of hesitated about putting him on here because it feels sort of weird to call him a "villain" but like. He did sexually assault the protagonist in an early episode and threaten to kill him later on, so, like. Even if the story turns around and gives him a happy ending (iconic) I feel like he counts. Disaster of a man, kind of an awful person ("kind of?", you say, and okay, that might be so), and it's very sexy of him. Pete thinks so too, apparently.
4. Shen Jiu. Yest all right I know he's technically Sir Not Appearing In This Book but he is technically the titular scum villain so I'm counting him. Awful man. Miserable history, miserable story. I'm irresistibly drawn to tragedies created by characters themselves and that's what this guy's got going on.
5. Moridin/Ishamael/Elan Morin Tedronai. We! Love! A nihilistic villain just craving the end of everything! Of tenuous sanity and an abiding obsession with the protagonist! Anyway I didn't have a lot of feelings about this guy the first couple times I read Wheel of Time but then on my second to latest reread he came roaring out in front and plop, in the villain warehouse he goes.
thought about including He Xuan but he only sort of feels like he counts as a villain somehow; honorable mentions here go to Celegorm (disney prince murderer), Jun Wu (king of creating a toxic work environment), Clytemnestra (queen of my heart), Azula (since I just mentioned her), Jin Guangyao (generator of infinite discourse) and Jinx. I feel like I'm forgetting folks here. but that happens, I suppose.
and this is not including villains who are just so much fun for me to watch, who live in a slightly separate corner of my brain but are beloved of me nonetheless.

the last mdzs battle is so dramatic. jin ling is losing his uncle, jiang cheng is recovering from the entire “wei wuxian gave you his golden core” reveal, lan xichen is losing his other sworn brother, wen ning is battling nie mingjue’s dead body, nie huaisang is an icon and also getting stabbed in the leg, su she is dying, jin guangyao commits suicide and got poisoned, his hand cut off, etc etc, … wangxian is just being a pair of disgusting newlyweds,

very much enjoying seeing your further descent into mxtx fandom :3 do you have a fav mdzs character/ship?
thank you for having such a long archive that i could binge xD i'm really feeling that one post i reblogged about hostages trapped in a grain silo - that's how i feel every time i queue out another 50 mxtx posts
i really came around to jin guangyao by the end of the novel. i liked how he was a foil to wei wuxian re. public opinion turning against them as soon as it's convenient for everyone, how they were both in a way forced into doing bad things (for wildly varying degrees of "bad" of course). i also like jin ling a lot, he really epitomises "lonely because he's a brat, but a brat because he's lonely" someone get that kid proper friends and family.
there hasn't really been any ship that's jumped out at me (unlike with svsss and tgcf, bingqiu and quanyin my beloveds.) but that just means i'm open to pretty much anything!
(also when i watched ep 30 of the untamed and the scene where your icon came from i was like 'ohh!! that shot of wen ning!!' he's such a good lad i like him a lot too.)

bearing in mind that this is absolutely 1) a thc-induced fever dream of a project that 2) will likely never see the light of day and 3) will date me like i'm an ancient drilled sample of ice from the greenland ice sheet
is there any chance. literally any chance in hell. that i could convince someone (or several someones) in this fandom to help me recreate at least a few panels of brad neely's iconic george washington song/comic as a dumb comic. but make it about jin guangyao.

Shits Jiggy has done in order of iconicness & badassery (or the top 13, at least. 'Cause, everything he does is iconic & badass. Yes, that includes saying "Xue Yang did it" with a fucking bloodied Wen sword in his hands that he had just pulled out of the intestines of the fallen captain right in front of NMJ. Respect!):
His death! This fucking part!
Jin GuangYao coughed up quite some blood, his voice hoarse, "Lan XiChen!"
He forcefully broke through the spell of silence.
At the moment, Jin GuangYao was injured from top to bottom. His left hand was burned by the poisonous smoke, his right hand was severed, and his stomach was missing a chunk of flesh. Covered in blood, he couldn't even manage to sit upright, yet right now he stood on his own without any help, like one last streak of light from a setting sun. He called again in a voice filled with hatred, "Lan XiChen!"
And then! He pulled the sword out himself! And then! He spilled his own blood over NMJ's coffin to envoke him! And his last words were "fuck you Nie MingJue! Do you think I'm scared of you?" While NMJ lifted him by his throat with one hand and choked him to death! He took control even in his murder! In the middle of being killed! He took control! He died on his own term! Badass!
His mother was bullied & ridiculed & humiliated in a brothel, so he burnt that brothel to the ground and made a temple for his mother in its place. I'm sorry about the casualties but it ain't about them.
Was thrown down the stairs of Jinlintai, was not accepted into the Jin Family or even acknowledged as a person that exists when he was working for them, when finally accepted only after becoming a war hero was given a wrong generational name and treated as a glorified servant, but eventually manipulated, mansplained, manslaughtered, manwhored (& did a lot, lot of hard, competent work) his way to the top & became the Sect Leader of the Lanling Jin Clan. Was considered the lowest of lows in his society and eventually became the Chief Cultivator! (& a VERY GOOD Chief Cultivator at that! He helped the weak & fought against systematic corruption and ruled through a decade of peace and prosperity) ICONIC! BADASS! TALENTED! INCREDIBLE! AMAZING! SPECTACULAR! SHOW-STOPPING! NEVER THE SAME! TOTALLY UNIQUE!
The way he kills Wen Ruohan in the books! "Do what you want" "yes." *kills him*
Meng Yao, "Now, that's not the way to go about this. With Sect Leader Nie's sturdy body, he might become all great and mighty again after just a few days of rest."
Wen RuoHan, "Do as you please."
Meng Yao, "Yes."
Yet, as he responded, a cold light, thinner than thin, slashed out and across. Wen RuoHan suddenly turned quiet. Warm droplets of blood splashed onto Nie MingJue's face.
The thematically appropriate way in which he killed his father. I mean just killing JGS was a service to society, but to kill him like that? 10/10. Inspired. (I guess it was actually kinda inspired by what Sect Leader He said, wasn't it?)
The things he does every time he's thrown down the stairs? When he gets up with difficulty and straightens his clothes & his hair & wipes the dust off them and bows with that "consider your ass kicked<3" smile in a low angle shot as the sun shines above him/ smiles the "you're so fucked, bestie. You just have to catch up to the fact that you're fucked, bestie.<3" smile as he goes up those long-ass stairs with difficulty as he bleeds from the head? And that straightening his clothes he does, in general, every time he's humiliated? I mean badass in general but when you consider that he was told by his mother that he shouldn't let his hat be slanted, 'cause clothes maketh men it takes more meaning. It means "I'm still a gentleman. you cannot touch me. I'm still in power, & I'm coming for you." I mean, It's very sad. as is everything else about him. especially JGS throwing him down the stairs scene. but the thing is that every time something sad happens to him, he has the coolest reaction to it that anyone could possibly have.
This is more obvious in the show. The way he kills the big baddie of the Jianghu, the most powerful man alive, the main villain of the past timeline (by backstabbing him, after being a spy in his realm without anyone noticing anything, doing tortures for him & becoming so close to him in such a short period.) and immediately convinced EVERYONE to go "oh this poor innocent paragon of virtue, this noble lord, had to kill a bitch.😔 he must be so hurt and traumatized and scarred for life.😔 I'll pay for your therapy.😔" And he was like: "do not flatter me so, my lords. You are the true heroes. Please pardon me for not killing him sooner. I shall live with these scars and trauma.😔"*off to the next murder*How can you not stan!❤️ (like...he's named Lianfang-Zun! The master of hidden fragrance! And nobody suspects that he might be hiding something!)
the Guanyin temple is the first scene in which we see him fight. And boy does he fight! He hands Sandu Shengshou's ass to him! And remember that Jiggy has a very weak golden core. And JC has WWX's golden core that is even stronger than his own & his own was pretty freaking strong. I mean did he cheat a little? Maybe. But he had enough presence of mind to think of aiming for WWX in the middle of a fight with a pretty pissed-off JC that was going after his life with both Sandu & Zidian. And he was so good at knowing people & had such a high emotional intelligence to know that JC would fall for the trick!
Interrupting his big villain moment to ask WWX how comes he & LWJ are not sleeping in the same room (and they did, actually. Before that thing happened. He was right.) And politely and respectfilly put a pause on his plan to help let his and his boyfriend's ship sail.
The way he creates unnecessary homoerotic tension in every interaction and flirts with anyone & everyone even Baxia when he's in his openly villainous mode. (Openly villainous Jiggy is my favorite Jiggy)
Divorcing Jiang cheng without being married
Divorcing Nie Mingjue without being married
"I think it's best if Young Master Wei stops right there. It's nothing if your flute's broken, but if your tongue or your fingers went missing, it'd be such a shame."
Wei WuXian immediately put his hand away, agreeing, "You make so much sense.
The person, "May I request your company?"
Wei WuXian nodded, "You're too polite,Sect Leader Jin."
Jin GuangYao smiled, "It's my pleasure."
Wei WuXian, "LianFang-Zun, you hid quite a big land deed in the secret chamber of Fragrant Palace, right beside my manuscripts. Don't you remember?"
Jin GuangYao, "Oh, that would be my fault. I should've put them separately."
Wei WuXian, "Right now, we won't be able to run from your grasp no matter what, so could you perhaps tell me just what a creature is being suppressed in this Guanyin Temple, LianFang-Zun, and quench my curiosity a bit?"
Jin GuangYao smiled, "Quenching your curiosity doesn't come at a low price. Young Master Wei, are you sure you'd like to try?"
Wei WuXian, "Oh. On second thought, then, nevermind."
Meng Yao's voice was approaching, "Your subordinate is useless to have needed your presence, Sect Leader"
Wen RuoHan laughed, "You good-for-nothing."
Meng Yao laughed as well. Wen RuoHan asked, "He's the one who killed Wen Xu?"
He's like if I'm ending their whole career I might as well give them a "this better not awaken anything in me" crisis, too. Just as a little treat. Very bad bitch of him!
English title drop in the show
Was just dropping off the kid he was babysitting at school, walked up to the first Jade of Lan, the most eligible bachelor in the Jianghu, gave him one look, and the man was GONE! Meng Yao bagged him just like that on one of his usual working days.
Last but not least, "Xue Yang did it." (As promised)
