Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!

This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!

NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.

If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!

I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!

Summary

Jin Xun An, a promising achiever, is already the chief dentist at his dental clinic at a young age. Although cold-hearted and distant by appearance, Jin Xun An has nevertheless earned himself the coveted title of being the "Master Prince of Dentistry". One day, he is entrusted by Bai Qing, one of his seniors, to treat her precious little brother, Bai Lang.

As Bai Lang seats himself in front of Jin Xun An, he looks at the man with a cold and ruthless look. And while a mask covers most of Jin Xuan An's face, it only helps highlight his deep, electric eyes. Bai Lang then hears his gentle and soothing voice telling him not to be afraid. But almost instantaneously, he finds himself stunned, his heart palpitating and finding a desperate excuse to run away. As it turns out that Bai Lang is not the first dental patient to try to run away from Jin Xun An, but definitely the most troublesome since Jin Xuan An started his career.

Hello 👋🏼 May I ask what does it mean that Wei Wuxian was the first disciple of Yunmeng Jiang? Doesn’t their sect have senior disciples older than Wei Wuxian?

Also, there’s been something that’s been bothering me for a while after rereading the novel. I’m sorry— I don’t know how to put this in words so I’ll try my best to explain it 😭

Does the Lan Sect practice generation names(??) like the Jin Sect? What are generation names and how are they given?

Jin Zixun and Jin Zixuan were close in age and were cousins, and Meng Yao was supposed to have the Zi— in his name too but his father changed it into Guangyao instead. Jin Guangyao and Jin Guangshan are of the same generation name

Jin Rusong and Jin Rulan were also cousins and were close in age.

Does Lan Jingyi and Lan Sizhui have the same generation name in chinese? Are Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji supposed to have the same generation name since their brothers that’s only a few years apart?

Hello, I’ll start with your question on generation names. In some families, people from the same generation share a common character in their name, either the first or the second character of their personal name (a two-character personal name is required for obvious reasons). The chosen character is commonly taken from a generation poem that is unique to each lineage and inscribed in their genealogical record. Each successive generation is named after a successive character in the poem. The poem length varies, it may have a dozen or several dozens of characters. Like the family name, generation names follow the patrilineal line. I’ll take my own case as an example, I have the same first character in my name as my cousins on my father’s side, regardless of gender. In my mother’s side of the family, generation names are gender-dependent, male members of one generation use one character while the female ones use another. In some families, only males have a generation name. Generation names strengthen one’s affiliation to one’s clan that traditionally used to be extensive. When you meet members of your extended family, you know instantly from their name your relative degrees of seniority. However, the trend to pass on generation names is on the decline and has become less common in these last decades.

In mdzs, it’s as you said, Jin Guangyao was supposed to have the ‘zi’ (子) character of his generation but received instead ‘guang’ (光), the same character as his own father. It was most likely a deliberate snub to exclude him from the line of succession.

In the Lan Sect, there is no obvious marker of generation names. The courtesy names Xichen/Wangji or Sizhui/Jingyi clearly do not share a common character. However, I encountered an interesting headcanon in the Chinese fandom that the birth names from the main bloodline (the Sect Leader’s) follow the naming practice of having a common radical. Lan Huan and Lan Zhan are written 蓝涣 and 蓝湛, they both have 氵, the radical for ‘water’, on the left-hand side. Back when the novel was still in its unedited state, Lan Xichen’s birth name was not revealed, the author only said in an interview that it would also have the same 氵 radical. When the novel was revises, it was Lan Huan was added. If the custom continues, another radical would then be picked for the next generation, it’s a subtle but nice touch.

Hi. Do you know how it works in cql (and maybe mdzs?) that jin zi xun is not the jin heir, but he calls jgs shushu, not bobo? Did jgs become clan and sect leader even though he was a younger brother, and an elder brother's son didn't? That's as if lqr were clan leader rather than lxc, but they can have different succession rules in different clans?

MDZS; what’s in a name?

One of my favorite things about the Chinese language is how much meaning can be in a name. Broadly speaking, Chinese names are usually two or three characters, the first being the family name (e.g. Wei, Lan) and the latter being the given names (e.g. Ying, Zhan). Of course, back in the day, people also had courtesy names (e.g. Wu Xian, Wang Ji).

Even though it may only be one or two characters, the characters are often chosen for their symbolism. Authors often choose names to convey some key character trait or deeper fate of their character through their name. I wanted to write a little more about the actual meaning of their names. Not only what the characters themselves mean, but also how it ties into their character’s hopes and dreams.

Caution: These meanings are not OFFICIALLY translated, authors very rarely provide explicit explanations for how/why they name their characters the way they did, but it can often be deduced by the reader based on what happens in the story + knowledge of Chinese. So, these are only my thoughts and feel free to disagree. Also these are based on the novel. ALSO SPOILERS.

Wei Ying 羡婴: The character used for Ying ( 婴 ) here typically refers to an infant. This represents his parents’ hopes that he maintains a childlike outlook – to not be bogged down by the worries of the world, and live carefree without becoming too calculating or hard-hearted.

Wei Wu Xian 魏无羡: Wu Xian ( 无羡 ) comes up in certain poems and typically represents ‘to harbor no envy’. WWX’s given name represents his nature to always maintain his true self, to walk his own path and to not be envious of others despite all the difficulties he encounters.

Lan Zhan 蓝湛: The character used for Zhan ( 湛 ) is often used to describe something untainted, pure, crystal and at the same time, deep…yeah I know – sounds like the Er Ge Ge we all love and know.

Lan Wang Ji 蓝忘机: The second word, Ji ( 机 ), is actually part of the word ‘机心’, which means to harbor deception and trickery. And Wang means to forget. Wang Ji actually stems from a Taoist saying that means to abstain from ulterior motives and keep your heart free of too many devious thoughts, to remain ‘pure’ from this world’s machinations.

Lan Si Zhui 蓝思追: This was the only name (IIRC) that was explained by MXTX in the original text, and it was given by LWJ. It means, “思君不可追，念君何时回”. In phonetics: Si Jun Bu Ke Zhui, Nian Jun He Shi Hui

The first part of the phrase literally means “Thinking of a lover I can’t pursue” (bc he’s dead and also because LWJ is under house arrest) and the second part of the phrase means, “Awaiting someday when he might return”. LITERALLY GOOSEBUMPS SOMEONE HELP THIS MAN

Lan Huan 蓝涣: Huan ( 涣 ) means to disappear, to separate – likely a hint as to his fate of eventual self-isolation and also the departure of his two closest sworn brothers.

Lan Xi Chen 蓝曦臣: 晨曦(Chen Xi) means dawn, light. It’s a different character for Chen used in his name but the phonetic sound is the same. Instead, his name is flipped to Xi Chen, and the character used for Chen here is more or less used in several different ways to all essentially refer to a subject (a court minister, a vassal, a lord – idk can someone else come up with a better translation for this) so in a way, he serves the light/he brings hope.

Jin Guang Yao 金光瑶: GY was born Meng Yao and presumably given his name as JGY while under his father, JGS. Jin Guang is a derivative of his father’s name, it’s common to share the first character of your given name with another family member.

However, this goes against the naming convention of heirs born in his same generation. All his half-sibs follow the naming convention of ‘Jin Zi ___’ (e.g. Jin Zi Xuan, Jin Zi Xun) because his father never considered him as a real son or wanted to recognize him as a son in any way. Naming him in this way makes him (and his associated background as the child of a ho and an outsider) stand out starkly whenever he introduces himself to others. People will know exactly who he is and what his place in the family is. It’s really not a very nice thing to do to your son. :( As for Yao as a character, it essentially means beautiful, precious – he retained the given birth name from his mother so it’s not surprising she would name him this based on all the hopes she had for him.
