Resources and tips for GN!Reader writing ✨

Nobody asked this, but I wanted to offer in case anyone else wanted to write some GN!Tav / GN!Reader fanfic and wanted some tips!

My own tips:

Read other gender-neutral fics! Get a vibe for what you like, what you don't like in terms of how the reader is described, how smut is written, etc. I read GN fics for other fandoms before even starting mine (shoutout to the JJK & AOT GN!Reader fics I read)

Remove gender from any place it's not needed! For example, you don't need to say 'heroine' at all, 'hero' is gender neutral-- same with 'actress' and 'actor'. You can find some great examples of little, every day ways you can remove gender in your language in this UNC writing guide.

Trust your readers! I think a lot of GN writing is leaving the blanks to be filled by your readers. As the writer, I'm not telling you what any particular body part looks like, how tall the character is, what color their hair is, etc.-- I just need to provide the framework for the reader to fill in the rest.

Try not to overthink it. I'll confess I think I did this a lot at first (I hope I've gotten better), but I was totally overthinking every single word and how it could be interpreted. Like with the last point, less is sometimes more, so try not to overwork a piece of writing to account for every reader possibility.

Is it weird how I'm suddenly inspired to learn a new language? Are there any resources you would recommend for learning Mandarin and Latin American Spanish?

I don't think that's weird at all, it's always cool to learn a new language and if you ever feel inspired to do it, I'd say do it!

As far as resources I recommend...

I tend to get basic 101 style books on the language's alphabet/writing system, basic grammar rules and phrases and from there I pretty much solo it by listening to music, watching movies, watching anime subbed in a target language, etc. etc. I do this with pretty much every language I've learned up until this pointー Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Mandarin. Then every once in a while I take occasional notes on things like grammar. The more adept I get with the language, the less I start relying on the book.

For Spanish the book I got was Spanish Demystified. For Mandarin I used the textbooks I needed to purchase for the class, Integrated Chinese (Simplified Characters), and watched Chinese dramas and movies. I really like the Mexican novelas Soy Tu Dueña, Mi Corazón es Tuyo, María la del Barrio. I've been into Reina del Flow on Netflix lately (Colombian). La Primera Dama, both Colombian and Chilean versions, are good. You can find plenty of novelas on Netflix and Youtube.

I'm more into Chinese films than C-dramas personally, I LOVE the movie Suddenly Seventeen (it's on youtube too), Big Fish & Begonia and Hear Me (Taiwanese Film) are my personal favorites. I'll recommend those any day of the week.

I also recommend watching youtubers that speak your target language. Especially if you're trying to learn a Latin American variety of Spanish since across Latin America there are plenty of dialects and accents. I'd check out as many as possible because if you're trying to learn a specific dialect, you'll want to know which one you like the most. I went with Mexican since my at the time GF was Mexican and I worked in her city for a while back in 2018.

Youtubers I like are Missasinfonia (Mexican), Piyoasdf (Chilean), Danna Alquati (Venezuelan). I'd say just learn how to say certain things you're interested in Spanish or Mandarin and look them up in youtube. Like... 'viendo JJK por primera vez' to find JJK reactions in Spanish and so on and so forth.

I rec watching youtubers and movies and listening to music since native speakers naturally speak faster than the way they do in videos/resources meant for teaching. So it's best to get used to how native speakers speak quickly, at least for me. But I'd adapt your studying and things like that to personally how you best learn, what your goals are for the language and things like that.

okay, first off with genshin: there’s a shit ton of content going on (plus a shit ton of events that you missed), so it’ll be easier for you to reach the average adventure rank at the moment, which is AR55. also, the new update is coming soon in 9 days! in terms of updates, there is one every month. near the end of the current update, make sure you’re being honest in the surveys they send you in the game because the company takes feedback into heart, and it’s amazing.

the good thing about the game is that it doesn’t matter who you put in your team and what artifacts you put them as; it’s all about the experience (honestly fuck the try-hards, don’t listen to them). one tip of how you want to go about this is never level up every character because you need to save up for resources for the characters you want to use.

for builds, you should use these websites: https://genshin.gg and https://game8.co/games/Genshin-Impact. however, like i said, it doesn’t really matter. but it helps if you’re not familiar with the gacha system. speaking of the gacha system, rates fucking suck, but don’t let that bring you down.

for anime, ouran high school host club is a great starter in my opinion. it’s one of my favorite anime of all time -- very fun and lighthearted. other anime i recommend are haikyuu (hq), boku no hero academia (bnha), jujustsu kaisen (jjk), angel beats!, fairy tail, and soul eater. there are other ones that i may have forgotten, but just let me know in discord if you want any specific recs :000.

As a grown man that cries, you're incredibly valid. Also remind me not to do recorded chapter reactions ever.

First recommendation is Son Wu reading through chapters 109 - 120. His reaction to chapter 120 (including Nanami's death (1:32:00)) starts @ 1:27:00 and ends at 1:38:18. I highly recommend watching him react to chapters 124 & 125 (Nobara) in the next video as well. -- He also has some good insights and thoughts about the chapters, so maybe give the whole arc a watch, if you enjoy seeing people's reactions. Second recommendation is ED Anime reading through chapters 99-122 (chapter 120 reaction starts at 2:26:50) but he also reads the entire arc and it's very entertaining, even if he tends to ramble about random stuff in chat more than Son Wu. He's funny and goofy, which is always fun for videos like this. [video]

Third recommendation is the channel Project: Manga, who do weekly Shonen Jump discussions, including Jujutsu Kaisen. No tears from these guys, but they have a lot of good theories and ideas about the chapters they cover. (Fair warning, they can get really caught up on small details, which can be annoying, but whatever) [channel]

Last but not least, I highly recommend checking out Broken Ronin's channel, cause he has some great analysis videos of JJK, among other anime/manga series. [channel]

Side Note: None of these videos are gonna show the chapters on-screen because of copyright --Viz will take down their videos pretty much instantly-- so if you have access to the chapters, I suggest reading along with them as they react or else you'll probably get lost.
