If we're still doing the Great Hate then honestly I don't like a lot of the early books - this series has a lot of Early Installment Weirdness (such as FC1's characterisation, the engines not having IRL bases yet, the railway only having a handful of locomotives) which then had to get retconned later, and to me Sodor doesn't start feeling like a real place until around Edward the Blue Engine - I might be in the minority, but I've always preferred Wilbert's narrow gauge books because those felt more grounded (probably because he was writing from direct experience). I think once the series picks up, it genuinely is good, but it takes a while to get to that point, and the existence of the weird early stuff still leads to problems - a lot of the character backstories in IOS are outlandish for a reason XD

It doesn't help that I can't stand Johnny Morris' narration, but that might just be me XD
