Meet Georgie

April, 1940. Leonie Georgiana Becker, better known as Georgie, has lived in London most of her life because her parents work for the government. Now Georgie, her little sister Hannelore, and their Nan are being evacuated and are going to be living with a cousin in the US. 

Georgie wishes they could stay at Oma’s and Opa’s farm, like they used to do every summer, but the threat of war with Germany cancelled their plans last year and she doesn’t know when she’ll see them again. 

Georgie is a Gotz Little Sisters Lily doll who needed some serious TLC. She had a bad case of silver eye and one of the weights had fallen off, giving her a lazy eye. She also was balding in the front. 

She has the same body as the original Pleasant Company dolls, but her head is  bigger. I had to order an 11-12 wig because none of the wigs I had (size 10-11) would fit. In fact, one of the reasons I dressed her in Kit’s outfit was because the knit cloche was the only I could get on her noggin.

I’ll have to make her some clothes because there is no way she will fit in the newer AG stuff. She’s wearing the old version and it barely fits. I had to squish her body a bit to secure the hook and eye on the skirt. 

I hope to be able to take some more pictures with her new clothes and add to her story.

I love her softer vinyl and huggable body. She definitely feels more like a companion than the newer AG dolls.

Merry Christmas! Part 1:

Not all of my dolls celebrate Christmas, but here’s how they’re enjoying winter.

Ruthie and Kit are dressed up for their after Christmas outing on the 26th, a tradition they still keep up.

Nanea is excited to show off her new engraved barrette and the Pearl Harbor pin she got for Christmas.

Molly is dressed up for Christmas with her pilot teddy bear she shares with Kit.

Rebecca, Samantha and Nellie are all bundled up for the New York winter.

Tenney is excited to perform in a Christmas concert.

Cecile and Marie-Grace will also be performing in a Christmas concert.

Amelia was chosen to be one of the Clara’s for her dance school’s performance with the company they partner with, which has been a great fit for her!

Angie is excited to not just see Amelia perform, but also to see Rosa (her older siblings new fiancé) perform as the sugar plum fairy! She’s glad they’re on the same schedule so she can see both of them shine in the same show.

Nicki is dressed nice and warm for the cold Colorado winter, and is hoping to go skiing soon.

And Elizabeth is looking forward to wearing her new gown to the governor’s ball.

#queue. anon #not a stupid question at all. and actually something I've been wondering myself #for this tour #since my experience has been with Louis in a festival context. taking place in an arena or outside - I'm expecting tour to be... intense #if you want to be close. the earlier you get there. the better. that's for sure. I think I did around three hours ahead of doors opening #once got super lucky and made it to second row. and another time was maybe around row 12 or 15. which wasn't too bad - #it depends a lot on how tall you are. and how tall the people in front of you too #it was nice to be able to see him up close because he's beautiful. and mesmerising on stage. but it's not the end of the world if you're far #either. you will still hear him sing. which is everything - first time I heard him live. literally got goosebumps when he started with JLY #and I had a not so great seat. also not everyone can be at the venue hours and hours before. or wait in line for so long #hoping beyond hope everything goes according to plan for Louis. he deserves his moment and his dream. so much :( #and we all get to enjoy his talent and his happiness being on stage where he belongs 🙏 - hope you have a great time at your concert(s)!

Hello! I’m wondering if you could help me date (doesn’t need to be exact just like whether she’s an early addition) the kit doll i got for my birthday? I don’t know if this is true but I heard (on Reddit I think it was a while ago) that really early kit dolls have no Velcro on their meet outfits. Is that true? Because my kit has snaps, buttons, zippers, and real working buckles for everything! I just found this interesting and wanted to know if you knew anything about it!

You're exactly right. The earliest Kit dolls were made with a zipper on the skirt, buckles on the shoes, and snaps on the sweater. So I'd guess your Kit doll is before 2002 or so. My grandma's Kit doll is from autumn of 2000 and she has the same meet outfit yours does which has no Velcro anywhere.

But if you want to be sure of the exact date your doll was produced, you should be able to find a date tag on the inside seam of her shoulder. I'll show you how to find that and interpret it.

The tag will be on the inside seam of your doll's right shoulder, on your left.

Take a bit of the stuffing out and use your fingers to feel around for the tag. Then tug it gently to unfurl it.

Here's what you'll be looking at:

The tag will have two rows of figures. The top row will be numbers from 0 to 9. This corresponds to the year of manufacture, 2000 through 2009. The number will be punched out and leave a little hole. This tag has the 1 punched out, meaning that Antonia was made in 2001. The second row is 12 letters A through L, and those correspond to the month of the year, so A is January and L is December. Antonia's tag has the J punched out, which is the tenth letter, meaning the tenth month, October. Her date of manufacture was October 2001.

If your doll doesn't have a tag, I think that means that she was made after 2009, since I haven't found these shoulder tags on newer dolls, so I think they were discontinued.

My 2022 doll wishlist/to-do list

1. More clothes for Marie-Grace, ideally her blue skirt set if I can find it, and either hers or Cecile’s nightgown. Potentially also homemade 1850s-style doll dresses on Etsy because I’ve seen some cute dresses on there.

2. Some of the original AG cookbooks or craft books, or the newer Cooking Studio books for historical characters.

3. More of the “Just for Fun” books! I have Kit’s but I also want Cecile and Marie-Grace’s (especially since there’s not much merch for them)!

4. Paint the wooden box I got for Kirsten to replicate the design of her chest (but on a smaller scale).

5. Start hand-sewing doll clothes, maybe starting with an apron for Kirsten or a skirt based on Josefina’s skirt pattern.

6. Another 18” doll! So far my most wanted are Josefina, Addy, or one of the JLYs to convert into one of my historical OCs (probably Karine, Honoka, or Francesca, or Héloise if I can find a Tenney).

7. One of the Girls of Many Lands- my favorites are Neela, Cecile, and Minuk.

8. More of the Dear America/My Name is America books, and Dear Canada if I can find them in the United States.

9. Finish playlists/moodboards for historical OCs.

10. Any of the “Welcome to __’s World” books.

11. One of the Hearts for Hearts girls if I can find one for a good price.

12. Find a better storage system for my dolls’ clothes.

AG Lines For Dummies

Your Truly Me is not a Create Your Own.

AG has made many character lines when it comes to their 18 inch dolls. Here’s a breakdown of the various lines, and which dolls are included.

Historical Line

AG started as solely a company that sold dolls with historical narratives, and the original dolls include Samantha, Molly, and Kirsten. Felicity, Addy and Josefina soon followed. The best friend characters are best known from this line, although they have also appeared in the GOTY line. The best friend dolls were often released in order to hype customers up for upcoming movies, Logan Everett of the contemporary line being the exception. The only best friend doll who is movie-less is Ivy Ling, as Julie Albright’s movie was scraped after the mass retirement of all the friend dolls, in favor of an Amazon special.

The Historical line was originally intended as a way for feminine children to see themselves in history, which is often a male dominated scene. At the time of creation, dolls like Barbie that depicted older role models were popular, and marketing dolls meant to be the same age as little girls was unheard of. The line was originally strictly for ages 8-12, however in recent years has been marketed more towards nostalgic adults and collectors.

The Historical line still exists, but is constantly fluctuating, often falling to the wayside. It is no longer the main interest of American Girl’s buyer base.

Subsections of the Historical Line include Beforever, and the 35th anniversary collection.

Truly Me Line

Known as also (but not limited to) “Just Like You,” “American Girl of Today,” “My American Girl,” and “Innerstar U,” the (currently known as) Truly Me line is a collection of blank slate dolls who are bland enough in their features to resemble many different kids.

Until recently, these dolls were marketed as being the doll version of you. However, with American Girl’s newfound commitment to diversity, they have tried to stray away from that notation, emphasizing that the doll is your best friend, rather than literally being “you.”

Truly Mes come in meet outfits that represent the children’s fashion of the times. Until the release of the “Trendy Girls,” also known as the “Street Chic Girls,” all Truly Mes came wearing the same meet outfit, however boy Truly Mes and girl Truly Mes have differing meets from one another.

Boy Truly Mes were introduced to the line in 2017 with the contemporary character release of Logan Everett. This was met with a lot of Evangelical pushback. No new masculine Truly Mes have been released since 2017, however the original masculine Truly Mes are still available to purchase.

The “Trendy Girls,” formally known as the “Street Chic Girls” were released in 2021 as part of American Girl’s diversity plan. While much of the reception was positive, the line had issues such as including a white character in a line heavily influenced by Black culture, and not researching well enough in certain areas to properly represent things such as hip-hop. Because of this, AG has dialed back their original campaign plan for these dolls, and now simply refers to them as “The Trendy Girls.”

Currently there are three Trendy Girls, each with colourful hair and a meet outfit unique to them.

Girl Of The Year

The Girl of The Year line began in 2001, and continues to be added to each year, with tradition being that the new girl is announced on Good Morning America. Girl of The Years are typically developed two years in advance, with the exception being the Gabriela McBride fiasco, in which Oprah called American Girl out for lack of diversity within the line, and AG responded by (poorly) producing a Black character in less than six months.

The Girl Of The Year line became popular during the year of Marisol, the third doll to be released in the line, and continued this popularity through the 2000s and 2010s. In the 2010s, Girl of The Years were often accompanied with movies and apps.

Until the latter 2010s, with the exception of the early girls (who had a weird release/retirement schedule), Girl of The Years retired at the end of each year. Currently, GOTYs are available for multiple years, and are available in stores such as Costco even after retirement.

GOTYs often have a color theme associated with them, as well as a main interest their collection is based around. Popular interests amoung the girls include dance, water sports, and environmentalism.

Now a days, the Girl of The Year line fluctuates in popularity. GOTYs often don’t resonate with adult collectors due to lack of diversity in doll design. Parents are also beginning to notice the lack of diversity and repetitiveness, with recent dolls like Luciana and Joss selling out again and again, while dolls like Kira fall to the wayside.

2017 Contemporary Line

The 2017 contemporary line was a line of three dolls released along side the ill fated Gabriela McBride. Gabriela was a rushed Black character who was not the original intended GOTY, and was made as a response to the anger about the lack of diversity within the GOTY line.

American Girl still wanted a way to release their originally intended Girl Of The Year; Tenney Grant with her “best friend” doll, Logan Everett, and so they created a contemporary line consisting of Tenney, Logan and Z Yang. Z Yang was an Asian character with a very similar appearance to JLY 30, and was based off an American Girl web series. Logan was the first (and only) boy character released, and faced controversy due to being a white character with the culturally significant Kaya mold.

This contemporary line released alongside Gabriela, and Tenney Grant was heavily marketed, with Z and Gabriela being mainly side pieces.

With the exception of Tenney and her collection, Gabriela and Z experienced many quality issues, and much of their collections were rereleases of previous products.

This contemporary line quickly retired, with no additions or mentions of it since.

Gabriela and Tenney Grant are still available at Costco, however Z has not had a rerelease, and goes for $200+ second hand despite quality issues.

World, By Us

World By Us is an upcoming line with three confirmed characters of colour, and was created in response to the growing criticism of their clear favoritism of white dolls with light features. This line is aimed towards older children, with the characters having light makeup, and attending middle school. The line seeks to talk about real world events/issues, particularly racism, in a kid friendly way. There is speculation this line will expand to talk about more marginalized identities in the future, with AG dabbling into “controversial” territory with Kira and Courtney exploring the LGBT community, and Joss being the first visibly disabled character (something they’ve seemed reluctant to do since the public reception of Gwen- a houseless character). This line is also rumored to be collaborating with the high end children’s clothing brand, Janie and Jack.

Create Your Own//CYO

American Girl: Create Your Own is an official GUI that lets you design your own doll with the various options given to you for $200. These options include 6 different skin tones, the Classic, Josefina, Sonali, Jess, and Addy molds, as well as exclusive outfits and accessories, and more. The CYO GUI officially released in 2017, and has expanded since then. The “CYO experience” is available in flagship stores, but is also available online. Dolls typically take 6+ weeks to arrive, and the CYO line also has a clothing design section where you can design various pieces of clothing with official prints.

The CYO line has been both praised and criticized for having exclusive features such as a light toned Addy mold, and a dark toned Jess mold. The CYO line also has an exclusive pink hair colour, and you are able to give your doll mismatching eye colors.

Freddie is hanging out with louis and Oli, do you find that strange

I find it strange that Louis spent 12 months and a lot of money setting up a festival, inviting other artists, and then weirdly not rehearsing, promoting, or making sure details are all in place. The festival probably cost a lot of money to set up and execute - £400-600k at least?

Hanging out together is cute and all, but the timing! Like all the Dad + Lad articles coming out with JLY recharting last year, just as he was planning for the livestream.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose… alas.
