✣ Blake Wrapped: KDrama Edition 📹
Almost exactly a year ago, I watched Goblin for the first time and loved it, as I knew I would (I am so very much the target audience for that show it’s not even funny). And when I started retagging the gifs and stuff I had reposted from that time, I saw that I tagged something with “I’m not in a kdrama phase per se, but…” Reader, I lied. The kdrama phase was just waiting dormant for its moment to overtake my life. Here’s my rough ranking of what I saw this year.
#1: Coffee Prince (2007)
Tumblr media
It’s a little dated, but it also has worn tremendously well considering its contemporaries, and the bones are flawless: great writing with well-rounded characters, a gorgeously evocative soundtrack, a lovable cast. It has recognizable tropes (rich boy/poor girl, second leads, deceptions, etc) but never feels cliche. Also, it’s incredibly queer. Yes, the endgame of the main pair is happily heterosexual but the male lead works through a gay awakening and the female lead is basically non-binary. Even the second couple challenge gender roles in a refreshing way. I’ve only seen it twice because of platform difficulties, but it has compelling rewatch value.
#1’ : Goblin/Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016)
Tumblr media
This show is a masterpiece. It has its weak moments here and there (one dreepy song in the OST, the female leads could be fleshed out more, some of the mythology is spit and string), but it’s such a stunning production in the whole that you don’t really get stuck on that. The cinematography is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in any piece of film ever, the instrumental music is unmatched, it engages with deep themes, and the interpersonal dynamics are gorgeous (I love the three-of-us-in-this-marriage feel among the mains). It’s also incredibly moving, especially in parts that you don’t expect. I’ve seen this five times and I’m still not bored of it.
#1.5: Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020)
Tumblr media
Considering how much I’ve yelled about this, you’d think it would be higher, and I think my overall complaint about it is that, on a craft level, it’s telling two stories: the overt story is an immortal romance, but the underneath story is about family and redemption, and that’s the story that’s the compelling one. Unfortunately, unlike the first two I listed, the theme and plot don’t always cohere as well as they could. That being said, the characters are top-notch, the cinematography and effects are great, and the atmosphere always feels just a little bit off to be properly otherworldly. It gave me my OTP and set off an obsession. I need to rewatch it and suffer all over again.
#2: Hidden Identity (2015)
Tumblr media
Of course, this drama is flawed, as viewers always seem to like pointing out, but I also did watch all sixteen episodes in less than 48 hours during a school week, which tells you something about its gripping pacing and structure. The episodes are, well, episodic, but the cliffhangers are fantastic, the various threads build well to the final boss, and It was also just a really well-produced show? The cinematography and fight choreography were masterfully executed, the cast really made the most of their roles, and the theme music was addictive. I was also, of course, watching it for the Plot (Kim Beom).
#2.5: Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (2023)
Tumblr media
It’s hard for me to evaluate this objectively because so much of it was fan-service, but since I was the fan being serviced, how could I not like it? It lacked the chic sexiness of the first season, but it was full of sincerity and incredible characters making heart-breaking and meaningful connections with each other—the writing improved, thank goodness—and the mix of fantasy, historical drama, and western made for a really fun setting. I enjoyed the shortened structure of having only 12 episodes instead of the standard 16 since it seemed to hold the pacing to a tighter rhythm.
#3: Special Labor Inspector Mr. Jo (2019)
Tumblr media
Would I rewatch this? Probably not. Did I enjoy the heck out of it the first time? Absolutely. It’s a sharp, smart satire whose virtue lies in its breezy ability to entertain as a tall tale while keeping the themes and social commentary incredibly grounded. It’s amazing how a show with such cynicism could also be such fun. The cast was excellent and the plot deliberately uses familiar tropes of rich families, hired gangs, and love struggles to push through its message: Power destroys. Heroism is kindness. Sometimes all you need is one very angry and very tired gym teacher turned bureaucrat to make life better.
#4: Boys Over Flowers (2008)
Tumblr media
This should not be as high as it is, but there were moments I still haven’t stopped thinking about and want to see again, which means it must have had something going on, even though I’m not sure what it was. I could never tell whether it was being ridiculous and outlandish on purpose or the show runners really thought they were making serious television. Exactly two songs in the soundtrack were good, and you also had that theme song as proper paratextual warning, and the outfits were what conservative people probably thing Queer Eye is. I do see why people like it. It’s just the kind of liking you have to do while mildly intoxicated.
#5: That Winter, the Wind Blows (2013)
Tumblr media
This one was melodramatic to the hilt, but somehow weirdly compelling, both through the elaborate ruse that sets up the plot and through the outrageous beauty of the two leads. This is the kind of overdramatic and indulgent nonsense you sometimes want in fiction, especially when its gorgeous to look at. The male lead goes around in suspenders and nice pants looking like a 1930s gangster. His sidekick’s hair and outfit anticipates David Tennant’s Crowley by six years. The female lead’s disability was pretty sensitively portrayed. Sometimes that’s all you can ask for.
Bonus (movies): You all know my thoughts about Flight. Also going to mention Hellcats, which was absurd but also deserves full points for having a main character come out as gay for her best friend).

Now that we are discussing the whole situation about Tiff...it's incredible how bad they handled it. At the end of s6 Lola was even sweet with her telling her she's sorry that tiff had to go to therapy and the "reason" they gave behind her actions was social media addiction?? Ok..so you have a whole season from her pov to show more about her struggles and to have her redemption with Lola but what happened in the first episode the only one that ask Lola if it was ok with her that she was there was Bilal and she didn't have a choice bc Jo and Max welcome her and that was enough. And then episode 3 Lola was clearly still uncomfortable with her being there, they even made a tost in her honor and when Lola expressed her feelings about that Max's response was "so you've never made a mistake?" Really? You'll say that to Lola, who apologized to everyone she hurt back then and was so in pain about hurting others that she consider leaving this world bc of it...so you are blaming the bullied, made her feel guilty for not trusting the person that made her life at school a living hell and that's it?
You lose all credibility when you have the chance to make things right when you have a whole season and you can't add a minute for an apology. Like you've said multiple times she's been great this season and we know she can be a great friend but we can't forget how everything was handled in s7 and I agree with you thay was probably applying for a lot of people that likes that season and still hate Lola. The only time my girl was out of character was that time that accepted everything that quick after her friends made her feel the toxic one for "ruining" the moment. Friends that knew about the situation but that weren't at school with them when it happened.
And don't get me started about how Max behaved like that bc he had a crush on her c'mom and now they are the stable couple and we are suffering hoping we can get our mayla endgame at the end of the season
#bestie noonie 🇫🇷
LITERALLY!!! bestie nonnie you’ve read my mind skdkdk
like i’ve talked about all of before in small bits, but everytime i think about it, it pisses me off. the way they had to assassinate both max and jo’s characters (and maya’s too a little bit!!) from the way they were established in s6… just to give tiff a new bff and a boyfriend like?? and it has NEVER sat right with me that redou and bilal, the two who weren’t even THERE for the bullying, were the ones that spoke out. like NONE of you have a problem with the way she treated lola?? after the way you were all so excited for sekou to make memes about her bc she made a hate account for lola?? like it makes no sense! and it was such bullshit!!
and then don’t even get me started on the scene where lola voiced her feelings. like the way she pointed out that “hey she was shitty to me and hasn’t apologized, she has a track record of this, maybe we shouldn’t trust her” AND THEY ALL GOT MAD AT HER?? like maya saying “don’t ruin the moment, love” still fucking makes my blood boil when i think about it
and the worst part is that after my s6 rewatch, i saw SO. MANY. WAYS. they hinted at giving tiff redemption that actually could have worked!! and instead they chose no accountability and lola having to just accept that tiff had now invaded her friendgroup like 🙃

Hearing that podcast that Misha did where he talks about the horrible treatment he got from b*onlies/w*ncest shippers makes me so sad. It also makes me at least somewhat grateful in a way that they killed off Anna* and had Cas take on the role she was intended to serve because if Misha as a white guy is treated this bad, I couldn't imagine the vile treatment Julie would get from those fans as a woman
*Though tbh I'm a little upset they killed off Anna so soon. Julie didn't have much chemistry with Jensen but imo she was a good actress and she did have chemistry with Misha and I think exploring the whole backstory of Anna and Cas would be really cool. Alas though, TPTB (with a few exceptions) don't have an ounce of creativity and hate making stories that can't be tied to the brothers in some way so of course we had to be robbed of a potentially good story
Oh like let’s be real the idea that they had planned an OTP endgame love interest for Dean that wouldn’t get killed off (for what? twelve seasons?) is laughable. I mean CASTIEL got killed off multiple times he just got brought back because his love for Dean was that powerful in the meta text wow! I agree that Anna is interesting but rewatching bits of that season a couple of days ago her backstory makes NO sense with the angel lore we get later on lol. I was just thinking about Anna with respect to the thing I was saying about Anael the other day with writers not exploring interesting ideas, they’re sort of parallels to each other (although I’m still mad they appropriated Anael’s angel name because in order to have ‘Sister Jo’ named after two of Jensen’s love interests on the show*). I am inherently more interested in Anael’s story but that’s also because Castiel ended up getting a way more interesting version of Anna’s. And there were plenty of other interesting stories they could have told with angel characters (Lily Sunder an excellent example of this).
With respect to the bibros/wincest shippers it’s funny because their inability to accept other characters genuinely would have driven the show into the ground I cannot express how boring the show was when it was only about the brothers in later seasons rehashing the same angst. I actually think Misha was treated pretty as badly or worse than a female star would have been (or like, in a different way and acceptable target rationale in here), and Cas threatened the Wincest base even more than a female love interest - he fractured the fandom in a huge way and spawned a more popular ship. He also became a third lead which I’m not sure Anna would ever have been. Imagine being in fandom from season 1-3 and then the ENTIRE fandom dynamic changes because of Castiel. I can see why they resent him tbh even if it’s vile what they did with that resentment.
*really highlights how Dean has had no love interests** since season 5 HUH **no we won’t talk about Amara, and canonically not the case anyway

Ship game
Movie/TV ship questions; answer with a GIF; no repeats
I was tagged by @bathroombreaks (thank youuu, I was really wanting to do this lmao)
Under readmore because I went on some tangents
1. First Ship:
Okay, so technically it was probably some Disney ship because child but in reality it was most definitely these two---
Tumblr media
I was like REALLY little when I started watching this (like four I think) and the show ended a couple years before I actually started watching it but I Loved Fran Fine and I loved this ship. Fran and Maxwell were and are just a fun ship  Random extra tidbit but when we got to the series ending during our watch through (ya know how channels do the re-runs and then repeat it all over again thing) I cried my eyes out for two hours because it was over much to my mother’s confusion lmao.
2. First OTP:
Tumblr media
This was definitely the first ship that I became absolutely obsessed with since it was also the first fandom I actively started participating in back in the day. I just felt like they were the perfect pair and to this day they remain a favorite ship of mine (they’re not canon but like naruto’s canon ending sucked so bad that I can say Screw Canon and 85% of the people would probably agree even if they don’t ship my ship pfft)
3. Favorite Current Ship:
Tumblr media
It’ll probably be back to brio in a couple weeks but  due to my rewatch of chuck I’m going to say that these two have my heART. They’re absolutely precious in every way. I have also realized that I probably should have read that other categories before deciding because I will probably want to put some of these ships in other spots.
4. Shipped from the first minute:
Tumblr media
Rapunzel and Eugene are absolutely perfect in every way and I feel like everyone can agree with that.
5. Wish they had been endgame:
Tumblr media
THIS SHOW DID THIS SHIP SO DIRTY. THESE TWO COMPLIMENTED EACH OTHER SO WELL AND THEY JUST RUINED IT FOR NO REASON. Midge could’ve just told him that they were moving too fast for her and that she wasn’t ready and that maybe they should break until she was but noPE just had to have her treat him so callously for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I didn’t watch the following season but I absolutely watched the scene where she chewed her out for what she did.
6. Wish they had been canon:
Tumblr media
This ship 100% was beautiful and perfect and I’ll always wish they had become canon. Jo and Laurie were so good together.
7. Ship everyone else hates:
Tumblr media
Back when I did give lok a watch, this was absolutely the ship I was going for. I watched it when it first aired and I really wanted this to be a thing. Got that enemies to lovers energy. Granted, I had no idea they were just going to completely throw Tahno to the side like they did. They showed potential in him growing after he lost his bending and I thought they were going to give his bending back and have him join team avatar but nope. They tossed a perfectly interesting character to the side. Plus, I just really, really, really like Rami Malek’s voice. Anyways, I stand by Tahnorra and my imagined growth for them.
8. Don’t even watch the show but still ship:
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched this show but a few people I follow do and so I’m shipping it from afar just because of the gifsets i’ve seen go on my dash.
9. Wish they had a different storyline:
Tumblr media
I DO NOT CARE HOW BEAUTIFULLY DONE THIS EPISODE WAS. THEY DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. THEY DESERVED TO HAVE MUCH MORE TIME TOGETHER.
Also, any ship that didn’t end up canon or that ended up canon but were butchered by canon.
10. Actually endgame:
Tumblr media
Absolutely golden ship and we deserved to see them be in love BUT CBC AND NETFLIX ARE ABSOLUTE TRASH AND RUINED EVERYTHING FOR US.
tagging: anyone who wants to do it that hasn’t!

I bought the series boxed set of Rookie Blue with graduation money last year, & I’m finally rewatching it to get through this Missy Peregrym drought caused by the awful combination of her going undercover, & halted production because of this stupid virus. Having just finished 1.07 Hot and Bothered, I find myself asking, not for the first time, how did Andy know where Sam lived? We’ve seen no indication that he ever had her over. Also, I find myself thinking about her almost affair, in relation to Luke’s cheating in season 2. Obviously, we come to learn that Luke never actually got over Jo, as evidenced by the fact that he still has the fucking ring, & obviously Andy comes to her senses before it goes beyond a lot of making out, plus you could argue the stress of the day got to her & obviously we know, McSwarek is endgame. But cheating is still cheating, right? Idk, man… I love McSwarek, I do, but the complicated morals. Damn…

¡Schitts Creek spoilers!
Miss jo karev i just finished SC and you were right, it absolutely got better from S3. Here are some thoughts:
- Ted and Alexis shouldve been endgame 😔 Alexis deserved a better ending imo
- Absolutely obsessed with the way Moira pronounces bebe and champagne (the correct way btw) actually obsessed with moira in general
- i died when i found out Moira was the mom in Home Alone ?!!!? I didnt even recognize her omg. The duality of a woman 😍
- also found out very very late that David and Johnny are father and son in real life too, so cute!!
- i still despise Roland, HIMYM really traumatized me 😔 I did like how he told those business men off after their meeting and stood up for Johnny (when he said he’d go back for his briefcase I figured it was the kind of plot where they got the deal but Johnny would mess it up when going back and screw up their deal but im so happy that wasnt the case)
- Twyla is my fave character after the Roses
- Alexis is soooo stunning and elegant, imagine having her face omg
Im not sure what to watch next so if you have tips (netflix only) lmk!!!!
🥰🥰
omg i love that you love alexis so much bc she’s my favorite fictional character of all time ever 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 and you’re making me wanna do a rewatch now!!!!
idk what to recommend bc netflix is like my least used streaming service these days but if you haven’t seen them i always recommend parks, great news, arrested development, community etc

why do i keep shipping characters who aren't canon or weren't endgame? why do i keep hurting myself?
i realized this when i rewatched atla bc zutara broke me.
and i fully realized it when i lowkey shipped lucaya in girl meets world and saw a fanmade video on youtube
I mean!!
laurie and jo from little women? catch me crying for days.
tahani and jason from the good place? why don't you smash my feelings until they disappear!
violet and leon from violet evergarden? just go dribble my heart til it breaks.
and yeah i know that nalu's pretty canon/THIS close to being canon but im still gonna add this ship to my list of otps that drive me insane like JUST BE CANON ALREADY

Anne With An E Season Finale: Thoughts
Warning: here there be spoilers. Also, long.
Tumblr media
Just adding that gif because it is sheer poetry.
Winnifred Rose
I felt absolutely awful for her. Obviously Shirbert was endgame but Winnifred has never been shown to be anything but lovely and clever and supportive (and also funny!), and she absolutely did not deserve that.
I’m actually glad that Moira and co didn’t let Gilbert off the hook re: his entanglement with Winnie. He did lead her on, he did give her every reason to think he was going to propose. I’ve read some (perfectly lovely) fanfics where Winnie turns out to be a closeted lesbian and/or she’s the one who tells Gilbert to pursue Anne- while the lesbian angle would have been interesting (although only if they were going to keep Winnie’s character around), Gilbert deserved to be confronted with the knowledge that in his ignorance and haste, he ended up hurting someone who’d done nothing to deserve it. Winnie’s grief and humiliation are so very real issues that a woman of that time would have had to deal with, especially after having been so publicly courted by a suitor- her family was ready to pay for his education, for god’s sake!
I’m not thrilled that Anne’s knowledge of Gilbert’s un-engaged status came from Winnie- it should’ve come from him. But that was clearly a ‘parallels’ writing choice, and we got to see Amybeth in that stunning disheveled hairstyle, so I won’t complain too much.
 Diana at Queen’s
I thoroughly enjoyed her parents’ rant- very typical of the time and the characters- but Diana’s passionate eloquence seems to desert her when faced with standing up for herself. She made the beginnings of a case for her higher education- I think it was in the first episode?- but her recent coping/argument strategy seems to be getting angry and running away to cry. It’s not really the kind of development I saw coming for her.
Dalila’s had some wonderful breakout moments this season- the argument with Anne being the highlight- and I’d have liked to see her take everything she’s learned from Anne, Aunt Jo, Cole, and even her mis-handling of Jerry’s feelings, in order to argue as eloquently for herself as she does for Anne.
I also really wanted her to flat-out tell her parents that she’ll ask Aunt Jo to pay for it if they won’t. And Aunt Jo backing her up because of course she would.
Post-Marilla and Mrs Barry’s ‘let them go’ talk, I’d have liked to see the Barrys come around, rather than just have Diana just show up at the boarding house with her dad as jocular as ever. I mean, like ten minutes ago, he was yelling that he wouldn’t let her go to college! Not a great choice there by the writers.
Elijah
It felt a little out of the blue, to be honest, but with so many storylines and such a large cast, that’s to be expected. I really liked the way this one was handled, though, especially the way Gilbert mostly stayed out of it. And that line from Hazel was beautiful. Isn’t Anne’s entire world about the importance of change, and learning?
Tumblr media
Couldn’t find that adorable moment where Delly smiles at Elijah, but this is just as good <3 Cutest baby to ever grace our screens.
Matthew and Anne
Hooo boy was this a doozy. I have to say I didn’t see this coming, but I guess we’re way overdue for a Matthew screw-up vis-a-vis Anne’s feelings- Marilla’s had ‘learning moments’ enough!
I literally cried. RH Thompson is just the most perfect Matthew, and he just bleeds love for Anne in every shot. His attempts to be ‘practical’ so as not to give Anne reasons to miss them are so ham-handed, only a sixteen year old girl with serious abandonment issues and a penchant for drama could misunderstand. And she did! The look on her face when she said ‘So you’ll be getting a boy after all’ is everything awful in the world.
As with every Anne/Matthew emotional scene, their make-up was perfect. Honestly, every man should take lessons on how to apologise from Matthew Cuthbert, First ‘I think you’ve heard enough from men on this topic’, and now a proper apology? Perfect man.
Diana Takes No Prisoners, Mr Blythe
The fury of the kindred spirit! Gilbert Blythe had nowhere to hide (or look, or a chance to get a word in edgewise) as Diana Barry gave him the Rant that every one of us has wanted to all season!
Tumblr media
Look at the way her face twists. Rewatch, and luxuriate in the way she tears into this clown who has hurt her best friend. I s2g most people might want a Gilbert but I want a Diana. Further proof that you don’t need a horse, a sword, or even goddamn pants to be a knight.
I’m not even going to talk about the ‘note’ reveal. For me, that wasn’t the point.
Lineage
I did wonder what had become of Anne’s quest to know more about her beginnings and her parents- I really hoped it hadn’t just gotten ‘fridged’ amid all the other storylines- and now i see why they’d left it alone. It belongs in this episode- this is the one about the future and family. Be it Elijah’s resolution, or ‘spread our wings and soar’, Diana’s choices for her future, Matthew/Anne/Marilla’s love, and the choice to have her found family with her as she opened the letter (which I adored), family and the future are the two overarching themes of this episode, so Anne’s quest belongs here.
Mrs Thomas was hilarious, particularly because of Marilla’s reactions to her. The reference to ‘Katie’ led them to the book! One of the saddest manifestations of Anne’s orphanhood, leading them to her birth family. Beautiful parallel there.
My mother was a teacher. Juniper. Red hair. I don’t have anything to say. All of that was... sublime. Especially Anne discovering all these things with Matthew and Marilla on either side. So, so, so worth every tear.
All in all, the most heartwarming resolution to the overarching ‘family’ theme.
And now...
.

SHIRBERT!!!!!
We got the kiss! Oh no, two! Wait, three! Oh man, I don’t normally analyse onscreen kisses, but this one. Gilbert kisses like a boy who knows, he kisses her like he’s saying the word finally. He kisses her like every moment since they met has been leading up to this one, even if at the time, he thought it was leading away. And Anne kisses him like can’t I just... kiss him, like when someone loves you, you’ll be kissed. Like finally.
Started from the bottom...

Now we here

I can’t believe I waited for this, I prepared, I steeled myself...
And I wasn’t ready!!
So, in conclusion:
It was a really good episode, could’ve been great if Diana’s Anne-centric backbone had extended to herself. Shirbert is real, Amybeth can really rock the 1900s fashions, Moira handled the ‘family’ theme exactly as well as we’ve come to expect her to, and now we understand, viscerally, how these two had seven kids.
Seriously, with a first kiss like that, we get it.
I hoped we get a season 4- Ka’kwet’s storyline needs to be properly wrapped up (hasn’t it been two weeks), I want to see Josie Pye and Prissy Andrews’ friendship blossom over beaux and business studies, I want Jane to grow the hell up, I want to know which Paul Tillie’s going to choose, I want to see Ruby and Moody- the loveable idiots. I want Cole to get a boyfriend, to see Delly grow up black in a white village.... I want Anne and Gilbert to navigate the pitfalls of being childhood sweethearts as well as ambitious, clever people (especially an ambitious, clever woman of the time). I want them to have everything (including those seven kids. Lol).
What do you think, kindred spirits?

I haven’t seen seasons 12-present of Grey’s (actually stopped halfway through s11 in a rewatch--Derek’s last ep cause I couldn’t handle it lol) including this episode so I don’t know everything that has happened since then, but I had seen a couple seasons of Alex/Jo and I actually was willing to accept it even though I loved Alex/Izzie...
And now I’m presented with the worst endgame ever lol. He literally did the same thing to Jo that Izzie did to him I--

Most Picture 2020.
In which we award the Most Picture Oscar to the most-rewatched of the 2020 Best Picture nominees, and track down the Letterboxd member who most obsessively rewatched the Most Obsessively Rewatched Film in our 2019 Year in Review—Avengers: Endgame—to ask “Why?”.
Once again, we dive into the data on the Oscar Best Picture nominees to name not the Best Picture (respect to Parasite!), but what is the Most Picture, as in, which of the nine 2020 finalists was rewatched the most by Letterboxd members?
And the 2020 “Most” Picture Award goes to… Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Letterboxd member Movie15 has the distinction of having logged Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood the most—a whopping 26 times since its August release, and though he hasn’t reviewed it on Letterboxd, we’ve enjoyed his quest to see Tarantino’s latest in as many Los Angeles movie theaters as possible, on 35mm as often as he can.
Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Academy-Award-winning masterpiece, Parasite, comes next, just 859 views behind—Khoi is the Letterboxd member who has most obsessively rewatched the film to date, with eleven recorded watches. Third place (and almost 14,000 views behind the two leaders) goes to Joker, watched the most (seventeen times) by Kenai Fleck, a hard-core Batman fan.
In fourth place, Little Women. Micah Simmons has logged the film fourteen times (but may in fact be pushing 20 views). On the thirteenth view, “I have nothing to add, except for mentioning a shot right before the scene where Amy does *the thing* to Jo, and there’s a crazy shot that foreshadows *the thing* so well and fuck this movie is smart.” Then come Marriage Story, The Irishman, 1917, Jojo Rabbit and Ford v. Ferrari in that order.
The official Letterboxd Most Picture list reveals the combined number of watches for all members with two or more entries for these films.

The Rewatches We Logged Along the Way
Avengers: Endgame was the Most Obsessively Rewatched Film of 2019 in our Year in Review, which means it had the highest number of Letterboxd members logging it five or more times in their diaries.
Member Max Joseph has the distinction of having logged Avengers: Endgame more times than any other. When we told him we needed to know why, he replied: “I’d be honored to talk about my love for Avengers Endgame!” Spoilers follow in this Q&A with Max (though at this point if you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame it’s probably only because Max has watched it for you). This interview was conducted prior to the 2020 Academy Awards.
How many times do you think you have seen Avengers: Endgame? Max Joseph: Well, I’ve logged it 26 times as of today. But I also think there are a good three or four watches I didn’t log because I occasionally put it on before bed, and just never logged it. So I’d say my final answer is 29, but that honestly may be lowballing it. I have a feeling that by the time the Oscars roll around, it’ll probably be at 30. I always watch every single film, documentary and short nominated for the Oscars, and thankfully, Endgame was nominated!
What’s your reaction to the news that you are the member who has logged it the most? Kind of shocked! I really didn’t even realize how many times I watched it until you told me! I watch Avengers: Endgame because it brings me happiness, and I love the adventure! When it finally came out on Blu-ray and digital, there were a few times I would watch it multiple times in one day. Then I’d throw something else on, then get upset that I wasn’t watching Avengers. So maybe it isn’t as shocking as I had thought!
What keeps you coming back to it? I love all genres of film. Take this season for example. I love the more meaty and dramatic films like Parasite, 1917, Waves, Queen & Slim. I love comedies like Jojo Rabbit and Booksmart. Animation like Toy Story 4, Frozen II and Klaus.
But, you give me someone flying, turning invisible, super speed… that’s where I live. Superhero movies are just my favorites, and I think the reason I keep coming back to Avengers: Endgame is because besides being a superhero movie—which I just naturally gravitate towards—in Endgame, I get a little bit of every genre and mood. I also like that it’s split up into three acts, and each act gives me what I want in a superhero movie:
Tumblr media
Act one is the slow burn, which we never really got in the MCU up to this point. It’s the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War, and them dealing with the implications and the new normal of the universe. And this gives a chance for the story to build, and our actors to show off, especially Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. It gives something new to the fans of the franchise and is one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back for more.
Act two is the “time heist” and it is a pure love letter to the fans of the franchise. They revisit some of the best parts of our MCU journey over the last eleven years and mess with it. Is it fan service? Absolutely! But I think they did it right.
Act three is the final battle at the now-destroyed Avengers headquarters. And this was where the slow burn pays off. It is what we’ve all been waiting for since 2008. The grand finale. The culmination of eleven years and 22 films. We are gifted my favorite battle I’ve ever seen, bone-chilling and heartbreaking moments, as well as the most cathartic endings to the most epic story I’ve ever had the privilege to watch, nearly 30 times over.
What have you noticed with each rewatch? Two things: firstly, how unbelievable the visual effects are. I may be alone in this, but I think Marvel has the best visual effects on the planet. By miles. And rewatching this makes me appreciate how much time and dedication was put into making this. So much happened behind the scenes, that I personally don’t really think about while watching it. But after 26 views, I start to think about green screens, the motion capturing, all of those elements, it’s insane! Go on YouTube and just check out all of that work they did visually. It’s beautiful.
Tumblr media
Secondly, how brilliant Robert Downey Jr. is. I’ve been saying it for years, but RDJ was born to play Tony Stark. Has he had many other brilliant performances throughout his career? Absolutely. But I think that if he was not cast as Iron Man, this franchise wouldn’t have turned out the way it did. He is the heart of the MCU. And he has so many brilliant moments throughout the film, meets his dad during the “time heist”, the realization of “the one”, even the way he interacts with his daughter, Morgan. It’s truly exceptional work. I think it’s his best performance as Stark.
What is the single greatest scene in the film? Oy, well that’s near impossible. A few standouts are Cap wielding Mjölnir, the scene with Tony and his dad, the reveal of Professor Hulk, thicc Thor, Cap vs. Cap, “the snap”. There are so many! But I think the popular answer is also the greatest, and that is when our Avengers return.
As soon as I heard Sam Wilson’s (Falcon) voice, I lost my mind. And they brilliantly added “On your left” right before all the portals open up. “On your left” is a callback to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That’s the first line of the movie, and is repeated again at the end. Both times are between Sam and Steve, and it was the same in Endgame. And then you add Alan Silvestri’s score (the song is titled ‘Portals’) which is building and building with emotion, which leads into Cap finally saying…
“Avengers (music cuts) Assemble”… (enter Avengers theme song)
It. Is. Perfection. I have chills as I type this. It was probably the greatest theater experience I’ve had in my life. I was sobbing. Imagine how I was by the end…
What has the overall Avengers cinematic adventure meant to you? I remember seeing the first Iron Man in theaters with some friends in 2008. We all dressed up in suits, because we were at a high school awards show kind of thing, and just went straight to the theater, and we had the best time. From the first moment ’til the end, when Tony says, “I am Iron Man”, then Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’ starts playing, my jaw was on the floor. I gave a standing ovation. In a suit. From that moment on, I knew that this was made for me.
Tumblr media
It has given me the greatest moments in a movie theater, incredible discussions with friends and strangers, and although it may seem cheesy, some much-needed happiness in some of the most difficult times in my life. I watch these stories because I love them. They mean something to me. They are an important part of who I am.
What would you say to people who say that blockbusters like these aren't ‘real’ cinema? Hahaha! This is a hilarious question, and I’m thrilled that you asked it. I’ve actually had a good 20 people ask me this, and I always said that I’d write something or make a video about it, so here we go…
Let me start off by saying that Martin Scorsese is arguably one of the greatest directors of all time. I love his work, I respect it, and I encourage everyone to watch his full repertoire, ’cause it’s beautiful.
That being said… ‘real cinema’ is a matter of opinions. To me, Avengers: Endgame is just as much real cinema, as The Irishman, Goodfellas, The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, anything. I don’t care who you are, you can be Martin Scorsese, Kevin Feige, one of my friends, a stranger, I don’t think you have the right to tell me what is ‘real cinema’. You can say something isn’t good, or only being made to earn a profit, but you don’t get to say that movies like this aren’t worthy of being ‘real cinema’. To me, they are. You’re more than entitled to that opinion! I just happen to disagree with you, but you’re not wrong by any means. I’m entitled to my opinion, you’re entitled to yours. And that’s what it comes down to. Opinions.
Thicc Thor—keep or send back to the gym? I totally don’t care. Taika Waititi figured out how to write that character in Thor: Ragnarok, and thankfully they continued writing him this way in Endgame. So as long as the writers continue on the path that Waititi sent him on, I’m good. Make him thicc, give him an eight-pack, as long as the character has purpose and the lines flow naturally, I’m more than satisfied with whatever he looks like.
How amped are you to learn more about Natasha’s background in this year’s Black Widow? Finally! We’ve been waiting since Iron Man 2, and it is finally time for the Black Widow movie she deserves! I’m fascinated by the Red Room, which was where she started her training as a Russian spy. They showed us glimpses of her beginnings in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, and I’ve always been hungry for more information because it looked really interesting.
Tumblr media
I also think that we may finally find out what happened in Budapest. It was first mentioned in The Avengers back in 2012, as a bit of banter between Black Widow and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and has kind of been a mystery ever since. It was actually mentioned again in Endgame. I’m basing this on the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel. There was a title card that said “Budapest”, so it would make sense that we’re gonna get what we’ve been asking for!
I’m also thrilled because the cast is awesome. Obviously double Oscar-nominated actor this season, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, David Harbour and one of my favorite actors, Florence Pugh, who had an unbelievable 2019, with Fighting With My Family, Midsommar (one of my favorite performances of the decade), and she topped it off with an Oscar-nominated performance in Little Women!
What do you think should win best picture at this year’s Oscars? Parasite. And it’s not even close. I think Parasite is one of the greatest films I’ve seen in my life. I think it deserves that number one slot on your Top 250 Narrative Features list.
It features the best performance from an ensemble, Song Kang-ho should have been nominated for supporting actor (he should be winning). The production design is fabulous. They literally built the Park family’s house for the film! Hong Kyung-pyo’s photography is worthy of being framed. He created a few shots that are permanently engraved in my head (in a good way). And of course, Bong Joon-ho’s direction flows with emotion and his script is original, gripping and electric. He is the definition of a visionary, at the top of his game.
Parasite is the crowning achievement of the decade and should be awarded as such. It would be the perfect way to end the decade with the first foreign-language film (now titled “International Feature Film”) winning Best Picture at the Oscars. #BONGHIVE all the way!
Tumblr media
What do you think will win? My heart says Parasite, but I think it may end up going to something like Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, The Irishman or 1917 (which is in my top ten this year). The easy answer is probably Hollywood because it won the Globe, but that doesn’t always translate into an Oscar.
But if it’s not Parasite, I think it should be 1917. It is a technical work of art from Oscar, Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning director Sam Mendes. Roger Deakins outdid himself and is pretty much guaranteed to earn his second Oscar [update: he did!]. Thomas Newman’s score is probably my favorite of the year (possibly of his career), followed closely by Emile Mosseri’s for The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Hildur Guðnadóttir’s for Joker. And George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman should be on everyone’s radar. They’re phenomenal. It’s shaping up to be quite a race this year!
What’s your favorite thing about Letterboxd? I think the reason I love it so much is because it feels like a family. I’ve had such a passion for the cinema for my whole life, and I like to share it wherever I can. But other social platforms (as wonderful as they are), aren’t always the best place to post about every single movie I’ve watched, or a top ten that I make. Letterboxd is the only place where I can let out all of my opinions, all of my thoughts, without feeling embarrassed or like I’m bothering anyone when I say how perfect Avengers: Endgame is. Or if I watch it and spot something new, I can post about it, and have great conversations about what I’ve discovered. It is the place for movie lovers, and it actually helped me love movies more, and to learn more about the crews, studios, and everything behind the film.
